Abstract

TheeffectsoftreatmentmodalityforGraves'disease(GD)werestudiedwithrespecttolong-term qualityoflifeandpresenthealthstatus.Atotalof179patientswithGDwererandomizedduringthe period1983-1990fortreatmentwithantithyroiddrugs,radioiodine,orsurgery.A36-itemShortForm HealthStatusSurveyquestionnaireandspecificquestionsforGDweresenttopatients14-21years afterrandomization.Presentmedicalrecords,andclinicalandlaboratorystatuswererecorded.No majorsignificantdifferencesinqualityoflifeamongthethreetreatmentswereobserved.Compared toalargeSwedishreferencegroup,alltreatmentgroupshadsignificantlylowerscoresforvitality(p< 0.05).TheMentalComponentSummarywaslowerforboththeyoungmedical,youngsurgical,and theoldermedicalgroup(p<0.05).Radioiodine-treatedpatientshadalowerGeneralHealthscore. Youngmedicalpatients(<35years)hadlowerMentalHealthscores(p<0.05).Therewasalsoa strongtrend,whichbarelymetstatisticallysignificance,foroldersurgicalandradioiodinegroupsfor lowerMentalComponentSummary.GDpatientshave,comparedwithalargeSwedishreference population,diminishedvitalandmentalqualityoflifeaspectsevenmanyyearsaftertreatment.The quality-of-lifescoreswerenotdifferentamongthethreetreatmentmodalities.
