By Sandra Sedgbeer Gabrielle Bernstein is a motivational speaker, a life coach, and a spiritual activist who, in less than a decade, has pretty much cornered the market as the go-to spiritual guru to the next generation.

She is the author of several New York Times best-selling books, including May Cause Miracles, Spirit Junky, The Universe Has Your Back and Judgment Detox, and her latest work, Super Attractor – Methods for Manifesting a Life Beyond Your Wildest Dreams.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Gabrielle, as a child,

you were highly intuitive. You believed in angels and fairies, your Mum was a devotee of Gurumayi [the head of the Siddha Yoga lineage.] You grew up visiting Ashrams and meditating. You read Wayne Dyer in High School. Spirituality has always been a part of your life and, yet, you also say that the first 25 years of your life, you were in a negative mindset, always looking for something outside of yourself to make you happy.

What happened during that period of your life to get you to the point where you battled with addictions from alcohol and drugs to food and

relationships?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Well, I actually

didn’t realize what it was that was the driving force behind that addictive behavior until later in my life. So, in my early 20’s, I was definitely looking to anesthetize some unresolved discomforts, and I was using drugs and alcohol to do that. I got sober when I was 25 because I had a strong spiritual foundation, and I knew that there was more for me. At that point I became a spiritual teacher, and I started writing books and giving talks, and I’ve been doing that now for 14 years. It was only in 2016 when I realized what was the driving force behind my addiction, panic, and in some cases workaholism, or chronic anxiety. That was all based on some memory of childhood trauma that I recalled when I was 36 years old in 2016. The recognition of that gave me understanding of the ways I had been living before that.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Do you think that your paradoxical behavior - that you had this spiritual foundation and, yet, were indulging in behavior which you knew wasn’t really good for you was driven by that unconscious knowledge?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Yes,

absolutely. I think that when you dissociate from a trauma, you can feel very flight or fight and not know why. We all look for

SANDIE SEDGBEER: So, you had this epiphany at the age of 25, and you understood that you didn’t want to live like this anymore, but having an epiphany and turning your life around doesn’t happen overnight. It’s said that the first step is the hardest. What was your first step? And your second and third? What did you actually do to start turning things around?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: When I got sober, the first step was to admit my powerlessness, to see and accept why I was struggling and honor that. Then I allowed myself to be humble, to be guided, and to follow a group program.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: At what point did you realize that you wanted to share your experience and what you learned with other people?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Very quickly into my recovery. I was talking about it publicly, and within six months started putting on talks, sharing my experience and the methods and spiritual lessons that I was learning, but differently, more modern, young way. I was 25, so it was coming out of me in a different lexicon.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: How did your friends respond? Did they think you were evangelizing?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: No. The friends I’d made and the people who came to my talks believed what I was saying because I believed in it.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: In the first chapter of your new book Super Attractor, you tell a story about a coach who told you that she feels like a fraud because she has a lot of fear and still obsesses about the small stuff.

You responded to that by confessing that here you were, writing your seventh spiritual book, and you’re still a head case.

You are open about your failings and the moments when you don’t make it to the level you would like to be at. Are you a natural sharer, or is this something you do because you think that sharing your failings helps others cope better with their own?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Both. I’m naturally a sharer, and it feels more comfortable to me to be authentic. I wouldn’t be able to stand there and say, ‘Well, one day, you’ll get there.”

I wouldn’t be able to pretend that I was anything but the exact woman that I am in the moment, but at the same time I think it is also extremely beneficial for a reader or audience member to see that they’re not alone.

So, I have been very open and vocal about the struggles I’ve had so that people don’t feel that shame. I believe when you see somebody speaking openly about shameful topics when they stand in their recovery from that shame, they give others permission to release their shame too.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: It’s clear from the success of your books that after decades of being dismissed as new-age psychobabble, or just plain old woo-woo, spirituality has finally gone mainstream. Don’t take this the wrong way, but the principles, concepts, and ideas that you teach are not new.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: They’re not new at all.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Consciousness is rising on the planet. People are waking up.

There are many new, young spiritual teachers in the arena,

and I should think a lot of them have had their eye on the vacated crowns of Louise Hay and Wayne Dyer. What do you think it is about your work, your approach, that people resonate with so much?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: I know that it’s

because I’ve been forthcoming, authentic, vulnerable, and I have only taught from the place that I am. I would never teach from a place of full recovery, and then, you know, each stage of my own personal growth and development has been the platform that I would teach from. So, whenever I am teaching, it is coming out of where I am. I’m grounded in what I’m teaching. I’m living what I’m teaching. I’m practicing what I’m teaching and have a lot to stand behind, so I’m not trying to be anything I’m not.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Do you think part of

your success was that you happened to be in the right place at the right time just as the consciousness on the planet was rising and a new generation was ready for something deeper and more meaningful than old-time religion? Or do you see it as more purposeful than that?

That you had some spiritual contract or something?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: This has nothing

to do with the right place or the right time.

This is what my spirit came in this lifetime to do, and everything that has happened in my life was exactly what it was meant to be so that I could do the work that I do and be the person that I am. This had nothing to do with ‘Oh, she was there at the right time,’ you know, and that wouldn’t have

worked anyway.

If I were just like “hit the right moment,” it wouldn’t have been sustainable. I wouldn’t still be talking to you now.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: It’s refreshing to hear someone of your age, who’s talking to a younger audience, that this was purposeful. “This is what I came back to do because there are many people who have been in this arena for a long time who haven’t been able to say those words openly.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Yes. You know, I think that everyone that teaches, teaches from their own beliefs and their own faith, and my faith is that my spiritual commitment in this lifetime is to help people release shame. To help people open to a spiritual connection and to be a guide in a way that will touch people on a heartfelt level so that they can feel inspired and moved to grow. And I don’t have any doubt that that was what I came here to do.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: In Super Attractor, you write that there are five principles to follow when beginning one’s spiritual journey. What are they? The first one is about the Universe, always saying yes.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: The Universe always delivers, and the Universe always says yes for what we desire or what we don’t. What we are attracting is what we’re aligned with. So, whenever we’re in a belief system of lack, fear, or uncertainty, we’re going to attract that into our life. When we’re in a belief system of joy, inspiration, and love, we’re going to magnetize the things that we do want. We’re all Super Attractors; we just forgot, so we’ve been misusing that magnetic energy. When we get into the energy of forcefulness, controlling or manipulating, we lose sight of the powerful magnet that we are to attract what we truly want. This book is not a book about getting the thing and attracting things, but about how to feel good, because when we begin to align with feeling good, we manifest what we want rather than the things we don’t want.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: The words “energetic alignment” seem to be on everyone’s lips these days.

What does energetic alignment mean to you?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: It means that you have

done whatever it takes to get closer to consciousness. In this book, I mention Abraham Hicks 26 times. This book is very influenced by Abraham, and I love what he says about when you’re feeling good; you reach for more. That’s how we get into a sustainable alignment. By leaning towards what feels good and reaching for more and more.

And what may feel good at the moment may be that we’re in such despair that blaming someone could feel better, but that’s fine, reach for more of that because it’s getting you out of despair? So, there’ are different levels of reaching for feeling good. It doesn’t mean that I’m reaching, and, all of a sudden, I’m perfectly joyful. It’s reaching for the next best emotion, best feeling thoughts, and guiding yourself there.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: You say there is a way that we

can check the energy behind a request. What is it?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: So, when we have a desire

that’s backed with the belief of ‘Oh, when I get this, I’m going to be happy. When I get that I’ll feel good enough. Or, I need that to feel good enough.” That’s a sure sign that your desire is not backed with spiritual alignment. When we set an intention or desire that’s backed with love, service, inspiration, and joy, then we can be sure it is backed with spiritual alignment. So, it’s really about connecting yourself with ‘What is it I’m feeling behind my desire?’ And if it’s not backed with spirit, with joy, love, and inspiration, then do what you’ve got to do to reframe it, reprogram it, or maybe release it for a while until you get cleaner in that area. If you’re just searching, and longing, and pushing, and controlling, you will be like a fish out of water— floundering.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Ever since The Secret, and

long before that, people have been talking about asking the Universe for what they want.

When we pray for this, or whatever is the highest good, that’s how we can believe it, because sometimes our plans are not nearly as good as the plan that the Universe or God has for us. Right? We have to do our part to have the freedom to have a desire – it’s fine to have a great desire – but let it go and trust that this is something better.

It has almost become a cliché, and I can understand that people get very skeptical about it, or they do it as a ‘gimme, gimme, gimme’ kind of approach, but they don’t really believe it. How would you encourage someone to get to that place where they can ask for what they want and believe that they can have it?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: I think there are two things here. One thing is that I’ve started to receive more and more of what I want once I stopped asking the Universe to give me things and started asking the Universe to show me what I needed to do and what was meant for me. So, I think that faith comes when you recognize that the secret to prayer is to forget what you think you need and allow what is in the highest good to be revealed to you.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Your second principle to help people on their spiritual path is that it’s good to feel good. But you also say that most of us resist feeling good. Why do you think that is?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: We resist feeling good because we’ve become so accustomed to feeling bad, and I think, in many ways, we choose fear and discomfort as a way of protecting ourselves from not getting what we want, from disappointment, from being vulnerable, so we don’t give ourselves permission to really let go and feel good because we don’t believe we’re worthy of it.

When we begin a spiritual practice, we start to see the synchronicities and the support that’s around us. That is one big way to begin to establish a sense of worthiness and see how supported you really are.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Interestingly, we default to negative. People always remember the negative experiences in life more than the positive ones. They seem to put more stock into them and credit them for shaping the way they are. Isn’t it sad that we default to feeling bad because it feels comfortable?

And then you get what you want, and you’re hit with postpartum depression. That must have come as a big shock and a disappointment. At a time like that,when the body chemistry is off, it is hard to find feeling good. When your tools don’t work, how do you get out of that?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Yes, it’s a good

question. In the book, I say the secret to feeling good is to decide to stop feeling bad.

That’s all nice and good in the regular scenario, but when you’re in a situation where you have a biochemical issue, and you want

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: It is sad, and it’s

to kill yourself, you could say, well, how could

the focus we’re trying to defy. The focus that you need that thing to be happy, but you actually need to be happy to have all those things in your life. With this book, I’m really encouraging your desire to be happy and free and trusting that the Universe will get you there in weird ways. I’ve been on such a devotional path of committing to being happy and free, and right now in my life, I’ve never felt better than I do right now. I’ve never felt freer, happier more peaceful, but the Universe had a big plan to get me there. Five months ago, I was diagnosed with postpartum anxiety and depression, and I was suicidal. That rock bottom of mental illness was the catalyst for some of the greatest freedom I’ve ever experienced, and that’s where I am now. So, it’s interesting how we get there.

publicly about your fertility struggle. It took you three years to get pregnant, and you so wanted this baby. And despite all the disappointment and the frustration, and I’m sure the sadness, you understood that the Universe has its own timing.

commitment to stop feeling bad that got me out. Every day I would say, ‘Well, I had another hour of sleep tonight, which is better than last night when I didn’t sleep one minute. Right?’ And I would continue to pray for help and say ‘I know that help is on the way.’ Just simply saying that I know help is on the way is a conscious commitment to stop feeling bad. That commitment is what kept me connected to my faith and not give up. When we have that connection to faith, we can trust that we’re being guided.

In my case, I was guided to my therapist who said, ‘Your tools are not working, you have to go further.’ And that is when I sought psychiatric support. We have to understand that when we surrender and trust in God, we will be guided to what we need to heal and that we can’t be the director of our healing

deep healing, karma work, recovery work, and that’s what has given me the freedom that I have right now. I can see how perfect that postpartum experience was because now I can speak authentically and vulnerably about mental illness, and I now no longer will be

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Humanity is going through a huge paradigm shift right now.

We’re watching all the old structures crumble around us. We’re seeing that the Emperors we were taught to worship—the politicians and presidents, world leaders and financial institutions, and the pillars of society—have no clothes on. Organized religion is in decline.

Politicians are arguing and fighting like children in a playground. Corruption and greed are rampant, and it’s stoking everyone’s fears. What advice would you offer to those who are perceiving nothing but darkness right now?

SANDIE SEDGBEER: You say that we clarify our desires through the power of intention, and being a Super Attractor is not about trying to control every thought that passes through our mind or living in some Utopia without challenges. It’s

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: I would want them to read Super Attractor, or any spiritual book so that they could find light in the midst of that darkness, because if we just succumb to the darkness, then we are contributing to the problem. We have to do our part to find the light, and that doesn’t come from focusing on all the negativity. We have to find the joy, the inspiration because when we start to dwell on those energies, we get inspired ideas. That’s when we do our part to show up. That’s when we decide to run for office. Or that’s when we decide to donate that money. So being in that energy is extremely important.

Through baths, exercise, and conscious contact with my higher power. Through time I spend with my son, cooking for him, playing commitment to others, especially when speaking. I feel most connected to that.

Making people feel good raises my vibration.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: How has having your son

changed you?.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: He has given me a

deeper level of compassion and connection to others. Something about becoming a mother and going through the dark times of postpartum has given me not an unhealthy attachment to people' s pain.

Before, I would hold a strong boundary because I couldn’t get up and write and talk and take on everyone’s pain. I wouldn’t have survived, but I now feel more connected to them. I think it's possibly a Mother, because I went through so much and now on the other side of it, that I can have a deep level of compassion for that kind of pain.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: You talk about the Universe as always guiding us to the highest good for all, and that living with positive expectations clears the path to solutions in all situations, even difficult ones. You’ve talked about the trauma in your life. If you were confronted now with a child or an adolescent who was experiencing trauma and is not in a place to be able to see the gifts in that experience, which comes with hindsight, what would you say to help them through this now moment of trauma?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: I would honor their feelings and their experience and tell them they are safe with me because when you’re in that kind of experience, you feel shamed and unsafe. If ever anyone comes to you, or anyone who’s listening, never deny it, don’t question them, because that’s where the shame comes in. You need to make them feel safe so as not to contribute to the shame.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: What inspired you to write this particular book at this time.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: I wrote this book while I was pregnant. I wanted to focus on feeling good and having fun. So, I wrote it as a reminder of my capacity to live like a Super Attractor.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: Is that the motivation behind all of your books? At that moment in time, you want something, and the book that you’re writing provides that for you?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Yes, I’m writing what I need. I used to think that I wrote my books for my audience. I wrote my books for myself.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: I know that people flock to your events, and your work is helpful to them – but I’m sure that some walk away saying, ‘Yes, I can see how Gabby can manifest all of this, but I’m not sure that I can.” That they see you as somebody, perhaps, that is above them.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: Yes, maybe. But I think that when I’m as open about what I have gone through, they’re reminded that they are no different than me, and they can recognize themselves in me. If they felt that they were less than me in a severe way, it wouldn’t work. I wouldn’t be their teacher.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: You provide a wealth of tools, tips, exercises in Super Attractor.

Two, in particular, are ‘Think to feel it,’ and ‘Choose again.’ could you just run us through them.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: The ‘Choose again’ method is about noticing consciously throughout the day the fear thought process that we have on the loop. Those stories that we replay and reprocess over and over again to ourselves, and to notice how that thought is making you feel. You become conscious, aware, and connected to what’s going on. Then the second step is to forgive yourself for having a thought because when you forgive yourself, you’re dissolving the thought, you’re taking away its power, and you’re disassociating yourself from it. You’re no longer thinking ‘that is who I am,’ but instead, you recognize that it’s just a story that you’ve had on repeat.

The third step is to Choose again’ and this is about reaching for the next best feeling thought, and then going to the next one, but making sure that whatever that next best feeling thought is a thought you believe in.

Then there is ‘Think it to feel it.’ When we start to get ourselves in a thought system that is more positive, and that we believe in, we can meditate on that thought, and repeat that thought as an affirmation. We can allow it to get us into an energy field we’re connected to, and that feeling is what attracts. Often, people think that if they put up vision boards and say affirmations, that’s enough, but it’s really about knowing, feeling a shift, and feeling that energy. When we feel that energy, everything begins to speed up in our lives, and we become Super Attractors.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: There are so many people waking up right now, and a lot of them are turning to your work and discovering who they are through what you’re sharing with them. What are you learning from these young people? What do you think that they want? What do you think that we can do to support them in getting what they want?

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN: I think that this newer generation wants to have an impact.

And the way to support them is to not put down their ideas. To honor their commitment. Encourage them to work hard for sure, but teach them spiritual liveaction, which is what I teach; that when we take action from a place of connection, inspiration, spiritual connection, faith, love, service, and spiritual alignment, that will have a much bigger impact. So, teaching them how to make an impact and giving them the tools is the method.

SANDIE SEDGBEER: We look at what’s

happening in the world – as I said earlier, everything seems to be crumbling, and we seem to be heading back towards dictatorship, authoritarianism, etc., and at the same time we are seeing these incredible young people who are very action-oriented. They know what they want, they know the kind of world they want to live in, and they’re unashamed about rejecting some of what their parents and their grandparents stood for.

How hopeful are you that we are going to get beyond all this chaos and that your son will have a much brighter future?

He’s not wrong, but I can’t wake up every day without having the sense of faith that this is going to get better.

There are many reasons for people to meditate. Some do it for their mental health, some for religious reasons, while others simply do it to stay calm and in touch with their inner selves. However, just like meditation can influence your health, your mental and physical state can also affect your ability to meditate. To be more specific, conditions such as anemia have been known to interfere with your focus and energy levels to such an extent that practicing mindfulness becomes nearly impossible. If you value your mindfulness practice but have reasons to believe you’re anemic, here is some useful information for you.

Anemia and its causes Anemia is a condition tightly related to your red blood cell count. In short, the job of your red blood cells is to carry oxygen all through your body, which they can do due to their content of the iron-rich protein called hemoglobin. When there aren’t enough healthy red blood cells in your organism, you become anemic, and the tissues in your body can’t get an adequate amount of oxygen. In order for your body to produce the necessary red blood cells, it needs various nutrients, but

the most essential ones are iron, vitamin B-12, and folate.

There are different types of anemia, the most common one being iron deficiency anemia.

Whichever one of them you may have, you must visit your doctor, since anemia can be a sign of some much more serious illnesses. The symptoms of anemia include fatigue and weakness, lightheadedness and dizziness, but also tiredness, irregular heartbeats, headaches, and shortness of breath.

Prevention and treatment of anemia Although not all types of anemia can really be prevented, you can take some precautions to prevent the most frequent ones, iron deficiency anemia, or various vitamin deficiency anemias. Basically, it comes down to maintaining a healthy diet, which contains all the right nutrients, most importantly, iron and different vitamins and minerals. If you’re looking for iron-rich foods, you should eat more red meat, liver, and kidney.

Anemia and mindfulness practice So, knowing all there is about anemia, in what way can it influence your meditation?

symptoms of anemia are leg cramps, which might make sitting painful. Then you need to breathe deeply and slowly, trying to focus your attention on the depth and the rhythm of your breath. This may also be problematic, since another symptom of anemia is shortness of breath, as is the inability to fully concentrate on anything, both of which can disturb your mindfulness practice. Furthermore, when meditating, you should be present in the moment, which is also hard when you’re fatigued and dizzy, and your heart beats irregularly. And let’s not forget the lack of energy you feel, which can cause you not to have the will or the strength to try meditating in the first place.

Finding out the cause of your anemia and making sure that there isn’t some underlying illness you need to treat is important. So, for the sake of your body and your mind, see your doctor and ask for advice about what you should do about this condition.

We all have a story about who we are and why we experience what we do. What is your story? What roles do you play in the story of your life? Are you the wounded healer? Are you always the bridesmaid, never the bride?

What part of you is making it hard to adopt the new story?

You can learn more about that self that is the overlooked bridesmaid or wounded healer and develop a different relationship to these aspects of who you are. You could learn something about that insecure part of you and discover what you could do to be more confident. Doing this might help you transform your habitual behaviors and attitudes, change your story, and change your roles in the story of your life.

The story you are living according to right now might not be working for you. If you were to write a new story yourself to explain what you have been through and where you are in your life’s journey, you might feel courageous instead of scared…

Valued instead of taken for granted… seen instead of overlooked… competent instead of incompetent…

If you work as a healer—an acupuncturist, a counselor, or a nurse, for example— maybe you can discover new ways in which your own wounds can help you be more understanding of others who are suffering.

To write a better story, you must first acknowledge what your story has been until this point and what roles you have played in it. If you were “always the bridesmaid,” who cast you in that role? In other words, who wrote the story about how your needs and happiness are secondary to someone else’s? And why did you adopt that story? Did you even realize you adopted it?

can help you claim your power to make different choices in the future.

Every role you have played in your life has qualities that you might not want to look at too closely because they make you feel embarrassed or insecure.

If you have always been the bridesmaid, supporting others and not receiving support yourself, maybe you have at times pushed away help that was offered to you.

Maybe you are the wounded healer, able to help others but not fully recovered from your own wounds, wearing yourself out as you care for others but don’t take care of yourself. Perhaps you haven’t acknowledged how much healing you need to keep yourself strong.

As you think about your past, consider whether you could write a new story about your relationship to the bridesmaid, wounded healer, or insecure and doubting self within you.

What would you call this character? What does this “self” look like? Can you find something lovable about it?

How has it helped you? Could it continue to help you in the future without your letting it take over and stop you from stepping out boldly?

As you think about these inner selves that have qualities that embarrass you or make it hard for you to be confident, imagine that they have strengths you have overlooked that have served you. Close your eyes, meditate to reduce the activity of your conscious mind, and let your unconscious mind guide you to receive a message from this character that represents a role you have played.

Maybe your bridesmaid within you, the self that regularly supports others, needs to start helping you more often.

Maybe the wounded healer in you will recognize where you are not setting firm boundaries with others so you can take care of your own needs a little better.

Maybe your doubting self, who is uncertain about whether you can be trusted with decision making, can recognize that you do make good decisions when you give yourself time to examine your doubts. Maybe it can convince you to be honest about whether you’re ready for a particular challenge and get some help from others rather than try to do everything on your own.

Change your relationship with these aspects of yourself that are like selves within, and you will start to change your story about what happened to you and why. That sets you up to fully claim the role of the storyteller of your life and helps you write a new story, one that’s more pleasing to you and Spirit.

The Day I Met My Spirit Guides

Coral Polge was a popular psychic artist who would sit with clients, tune in with those on the Other-Side, and sketch their loved ones who had passed on. Her drawings were amazingly accurate.

I’d always admired Coral’s unique work, but never dreamed I would get to meet with her. One day while visiting London’s Spiritualist Association, I noticed a woman tell the clerk she was ready for her next reading. I looked up, and it was Coral Polge! I couldn’t believe she was there the same time I was.

hesitation, she picked up her pastels and started to sketch.

I watched Coral draw an elderly woman, which I later found out was my Great Grandmother from Italy. As she sketched, Coral talked about my family and where we’d lived. She occasionally looked up and then beyond me as if this woman was posing for her.

I could feel a tug pulling me over to the clerk to ask how long Coral would be there. “She’s only here for the day,” she said, “But I’ve just taken a cancellation.”

My excitement must have lit up the reception area. I couldn’t believe I was about to sit with the most famous psychic artist in the world.

Then Coral adjusted her seat and said, “Did you know you have a Tibetan Monk as one of your guides?” As a child, I’d often dream of praying for men with shaved heads and colorful robes. Now I realize they were Tibetan monks . . . And one of them was actually my guide.

Before I knew it, Coral led me to a cozy meeting room.

She sat at a small table with a drawing pad and pastels of every color, and I sat in front of her. Coral launched straight in, “You know, dear, that you’re psychically gifted, yes?” Then without

I was about to get up, but Coral said she had one more drawing of another guide who really wanted to introduce himself. I didn’t need any persuasion. She went straight to it, pastels to paper, telling me he was an African Shaman.

Sadly, Coral passed away in 2001. She will be missed by the thousands who have witnessed her psychic art and to those like me who she touched personally. I truly believe that synchronicities are clear signs that Spirit is knocking on your door.

“He’s telling me, John, that it’s his job to give you the strength to get through difficult times in your life.” Ten minutes later, she showed me the portrait. I can see why I have so many African masks and art pieces hanging on my walls.

Nothing has changed our suffering more than science.

Nothing. Sorry Buddha, sorry Vedanta, sorry Christianity.

Although you’ve all been a big help, you need to kneel to science (and its stepchild; technology) as the biggest branch of human endeavor to affect our relationship to suffering.

Both ways. Good and bad. More and less.

Until 200 years ago, one of the biggest causes of death was starvation and malnutrition.

Then came internal combustion engines, tractors, harvesters, plant breeding, genetic modification, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and Monsanto. In the mechanized world, starvation was kicked way down on the list. Of course, in the headlong plunge to feed everyone (good), science has all but wiped out biodiversity in food crops and poisoned the ecosystem (bad).

Meanwhile we today live better than the kings and queens of the past. Back in the 15th century, the royalty lived in cold stone castles with a modicum of heat supplied by burning an inordinate amount of wood. They had no running water. A hot bath was a rare undertaking. And let’s hope you didn’t kick over the chamber pot in the middle of the night.

Your dentist would have been a blacksmith, and your dinner was frequently rotten with maggots crawling out of the not-so prime rib. And that was the

situation for royalty! As for the rest of the population, it was considered a luxury if you had a pig to sleep next to at night to keep you warm.

The level of personal comfort, convenience, health care, diet for the average citizen today would make the queens and kings of an old quake in their itchy wool undergarments in wonder and envy. Science has delivered us from the gross levels of suffering, allowing us to ‌ what? Suffer in more creative ways? Like from a Facebook post?

1. The Dark Side of Modern Convenience Modern warfare now mows down people, buildings, cities, forests, and cultures with the touch of a button. Modern travel and communications flatten time-honored societal mores, customs, and conventions with a click of the mouse. The community of old which provided a safety net for members in the community is now shattered by globalization.

Our relationship to ourselves, to others, to groups, to ideologies,

has all shifted in the past 20 years with the Internet explosion.

Eight-year-old kids see things on YouTube that they have neither the mental or emotional maturity to handle.

Of course, we can’t blame science and technology, per se. For there are people behind this who for their own personal gain, create the weapons, the manipulation, the destabilization, and from its profit greatly. But much of the damage done is not due to nefarious goals or greed. It is due to the unintended effects of a complex system gone wild.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” is a poem by Johann von Goethe, popularized by the Disney cartoon in Fantasia. Mickey Mouse is an apprentice to a sorcerer who has a magic wand that makes inanimate objects move (hello robotic AI). The sorcerer leaves and gives Mickey the task of cleaning up. Mickey takes the wand and gets the buckets and brooms to do what he doesn’t want to do. And they do. And do. And do some more and more and ... it’s a runaway disaster with buckets of never-ending water sloshing everywhere until the sorcerer Omtimes.com

comes back and shuts it down.

And that’s where we are with technology. (Except no sorcerer is waiting in the wings to say “Stop!”) We are creating devices, modes of communications, social interactions and artificial intelligence about which we have no idea of the ramifications, thereby creating ever new and odious ways to suffer.

And yet, at the same time, we have an industrialized world largely devoid of those base ills (food, shelter, survival) that caused us to suffer for eons.

2. The Promise [and Worldview] Science & Technology (SciTech) promises to be the answer to our problems. And this is not without reason. The success with which science and technology have come to an understanding of the universe predicted events and delivered amazing solutions for a myriad of problems have led us to think that in time SciTech will solve them all.

For example, when I tell people that I have a bad case of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), they are

dumbfounded when I sadly report that there’s nothing to be done about it. When it first happened to me, I was dumbfounded that there’s nothing to be done to fix it. Like everyone else, I figured that the medical community had done the research, experiments, case studies, and clinical trials and formulated a cure for this maddening condition.

In fact, this belief that science will save us is the predominant religion of today. Saving used to be the realm of the spiritual, but those days are over. Our society believes that if there is a problem, science has, or will, fix it, heal it, or deliver us from it.

This is so prominent it is now the over-riding worldview of our time.

And while we think SciTech is the answer, it clearly is not.

Science and Technology have made our standard of living and ease of living much much better. Yet look at our world.

Wars keep on erupting, cancer is epidemic, mental illness and opioid addiction are rampant, and suicide is at an all-time high and rising. We have

traded the older physical modes of suffering for a new age of emotional, mental and spiritual modes of suffering. How strange.

Eliminate one form of human suffering and suffering just pops up on another level. There must be something more basic going on. Something more basic than the world out there that we manipulate to make life better.

Growing up half Italian and eating my mom’s cooking, I’m always up for a good pizza. One night, I met some friends, and we found the perfect spot for the “best pizza in town.” I think we all drooled with expectations as our lovely waitress came to take our order.

As she came back with a full tray of drinks, she looked directly at me. “Oh, my God! It’s you! I have to tell you what happened when you gave me a message. Would you mind if I talk to you when you’re finished eating?” After my friends and I said our goodbyes, I headed to the kitchen to find my rather nervous waitress Sandy. “Some years ago, I was at the bookstore and heard you were going to speak that evening,” she explained. “I was lucky enough to get one of the few remaining tickets.”

“You pointed straight at me and said, ‘This is for the young woman in the back row. I have your father here, and he’s asking for forgiveness from you. Do you understand that?’”

Then Sandy said I ended with a final message. “I didn’t understand it then, but you said, ‘Your dad wants me to

tell you he just met up with Charlie.’” Sandy understood everything except for that last comment. “I was thankful for the opportunity you’d given me to hear from my dad, but I couldn’t ‘t let go of the last message about Charlie. I went through all the people in his life, but I couldn’t recall that name.”

The only way Sandy could solve the mystery was to call her half-brother. But she hadn’t spoken to him in years.

Somehow, she got up the nerve and called. “We had a few awkward moments as we superficially caught up. Then I told him the reason I was calling.” Sandy was happy that her half-brother said he was open to the whole concept of life after death and was not remotely surprised that their dad had mentioned Charlie.

“He told me that our dad and Charlie had worked together for many years. Charlie used to drive him to work every day.

At that moment, I realized this whole experience of Sandy’s dad simply mentioning a dear friend had a more profound affect. He’d wanted to unite his extended family. I think he’d gotten his wish.

Sandy finished up telling me how she’s now closer to her brother and his two daughters, which she adores. She said she’d become their favorite aunt! “I might have never known my brother better or his children if I hadn’t been at that bookstore that evening.”

I made a mental note to myself that as she ended the story, Sandy had dropped the “half” and was referring to him as her brother.

OMTIMES: When and How did you start your life as an Access Consciousness certified facilitator?

Venus Castleberg: Well, I guess I would say that it started 20 years ago. That was about when I discovered massage therapy and alternative health care.

One of the things that I saw early on in massage therapy is that I would see people over and over for the same aches and pains.

Something inside fo me was convinced there had to be an easier way. When I set out on a mission to search for an easier way, studying hypnotherapy, homeopathy, nutrition, Reiki, shamanism, tarot, yoga, etc.

It doesn’t matter the modality, you name it, I’ve probably been exposed to it or studied it in some way.

When I discovered the tools of Access Consciousness, I was thrilled at the ease of them and seeing so many lives get better. Even the mantra of Access Consciousness is “All of life comes to me with ease joy and glory,” matches the energy of what I knew was possible.

This set of practical tools and’ is a way for people to find more ease more joy than they ever imagined possible. It is possible to create the life and living you’ve always desired.

For me, Access Consciousness changed everything in my life.

I have more joy, more ease, and I changed things that I never thought was possible to change. I have a really strong desired to share these tools with the world. To give people a choice and a chance to choose something different. Everyone can have a different reality and a different possibility beyond anything that they imagined possible.

Venus Castleberg: I believe that the best invitation anyone can be is to be unapologetically themselves. There are 8 billion people in the world. And every person has their own way of delivering their message. Even if the message is similar or the same. The way that someone delivers that message in who they are an invitation to different people. I know that people come to me that aren’t attracted to somebody else. And I know people don’t,” who don’t come to me were because they’re pulled to somebody else. The truth is, we’re drawn to whoever will create the greatest change for us.

That could be the one that triggers the most for us so that we can look at it and change it into something different. So if I were to give advice to somebody who wants to break through and reach their desired audience I would say just be you.

5 Positive Things to Say to Someone Who’s Depressed, and 4 Things Never to Say

After years of being a psychiatrist and dealing with depression and other mental health issues, this is what I’ve learned: When someone is depressed, there are things you should say and things you shouldn’t say.

You should say these 5 positive things: 1) “I see that you’re having a hard time.” People feel better when they’re understood and not judged or analyzed.

2) “I’m here for you.” Depression is very isolating and alienating.

Depressed people feel a sense of relief when they don’t feel so alone in their pain.

3) “You don’t have to figure this out on your own.” Depressed people often believe that they have to figure out on their own how to fix themselves. Then they feel guilty when, inevitably, they can’t. They feel a lot less guilty and a lot less overwhelmed

when they’re reassured that they don’t have to fix things all by themselves.

4) “Are you thinking of hurting yourself?” You should always ask a depressed person if they’re having suicidal thoughts or plans because you could prevent a tragedy by getting them immediate help.

5) “Let’s get you some professional help.” Depression is a mental illness, and it needs to be treated by qualified mental health professionals. Just like any illness, it won’t go away by thinking different thoughts or going for a brisk walk.

You should never say the following 4 things: 1) “Snap out of it.” This is an illness. They can’t just snap out of it. They need mental health help in the form of psychotherapy, and often they’ll need medication as well to alleviate their symptoms and their suffering.

2) “You brought this on yourself.”

People don’t make themselves depressed with a bad attitude.

They become depressed because

of a profound loss they’ve experienced and/or because they’re genetically prone to depression. This type of statement only makes them feel bad about themselves and more depressed.

3) “It’s not so bad.” To the depressed person who feels helpless, hopeless, and unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel, it really is that bad. When you minimize their experience you only make them feel worse.

4) “It’s going to be okay.” You have no idea how it’s going to be. Telling a depressed person something like this will only make them lose their trust in you because they’re not sure if it’s going to be okay at all. They don’t need your cheer-leading; they need your empathy right now.

Following these do’s and don’ts for how to talk to someone who’s depressed will make you feel more confident in being able to help the person who’s suffering, and it will help you avoid making them feel worse.

Creating Healthy, Balanced Spaces through Space Clearing Case Study: The Luxury Yacht that Became an Adventure Cruise Ship

Throughout history, we have tried to be comfortable in our spaces at home and at work, using rituals and techniques like space clearing. A new way of space clearing consults with both people and their spaces to mesh the needs and wants of both sides. In Part 1 of this two-part series I discuss Omtimes.com

how space clearing works and why this new way matters. In Part 2 I’ll offer a case study that reveals how a luxury yacht and its new owners used space clearing to create a business that satisfies both parties.

To be our best in mind, body, and spirit, we need to make sure our spaces stay healthy and balanced. As I explained in Part 1 of this two-part series, we do that with space clearing, which uses energy healing to clear stagnant energy from spaces so we, and they, thrive.

To see how space clearing works, here’s a case study of the clearing of a new business—the luxury yacht M/V Sea Star in Seattle.

Space Cooperating: Energy Clearing a Luxury Yacht As they tap their intuition, business owners realize they can use space clearing to help develop and maintain healthy businesses.

That’s how I met Aspin and Erik Teevin, owners of North Pacific Expeditions in Seattle. They

had just launched their dream business: a small ship wilderness cruise service in Alaska. They wanted my Cooperating Space service, which clears spaces by consulting with both the owners and space itself to mesh the needs and wants of both sides. Yes, it involves talking with space itself.

Space Cooperating session involves three things: a list of questions from the people involved, one-on-one with me, and the space to explain the situation and ask what it needs, and the clearing session, which brings the people and space together to negotiate change and remove stuck energy.

So, what did the Teevins’ want from their business? A close, cordial partnership with Sea Star that included providing what she wanted and needed from them. With their list of questions and concerns in hand, I talked with Sea Star. The next day I met with the Teevins onboard Sea Star to explain what I learned and to conduct the clearing.

Sea Star Speaks: What Souls Want

“She thinks highly of herself and insists on being well cared for. She was created to be special and has definite ideas about that. The first thing she said to me was, ‘No fish!’ She absolutely does not want what she called ‘stinky, smelly, slimy fish’ rolling around her decks.”

I pointed to the crab boat she was currently rafted to while being refurbished. “She is not a fishing boat.”

The Teevins laughed. Captain Erik asked if it was okay to occasionally fish for crab and shrimp to entertain guests. Sea Star agreed.

she called ‘fuddy-duddies,’” I said. “She’s very serious about this. When she was born as this ship, she expected her owners to put her first and center, to actually use her, which you’d expect for a luxury yacht, right?

Except it didn’t work out that way, so now she’s suspicious.”

The Teevins were somber, as I explained. Souls are eternal; once their bodies die and they are back in the afterlife, souls review their life and choose their next experience. When the soul that became Sea, Star chose to incarnate as a luxury yacht, she thought she would fulfill her dream to be an adventurer, but that didn’t happen. Her disappointment

was a poignant reminder that soul plans can get derailed.

Sea Star told me that when she was built as a luxury yacht in 1965, she thought to have meticulous owners meant she would have great adventures sailing the world. Instead, she was purchased and docked, where her “fuddy-duddy” owners used her as a status symbol that rarely left the harbor. After sitting unused for years, she was depressed and not sure she could trust the Teevins.

The Teevins were astounded by what I told them, saying the only way I could have known those details about Sea Star’s past as if she’d told me. Saddened by her disappointment, they were also enthusiastic, because they had been on the verge of buying another ship when they found her and immediately felt a connection: they wanted to be adventurers, too.

Erik is not only an experienced sea captain; he is keenly intuitive and quick to react. He explained that as they neared Seward, he suddenly felt something was wrong with the engine and raced to the engine room to discover oil spilling out of it.

Trusting his intuition helped them narrowly avert disaster.

That incident convinced Sea Star that Erik cared, and she was now in capable hands.

What about that collaborative relationship?

The Teevins assured Sea Star that she was central to their business and asked what else she needed from them.

She asked for dinnertime conversations, so when their guests were out kayaking or sightseeing, and she couldn’t join in, she could at least hear about the day’s activities. I also suggested that they create rituals for her, a morning one to tell her what was planned for the day and an evening one to summarize it. This would help her be taken seriously as an

evolved soul and partner. The Teevins readily agreed.

A fascinating addition to the clearing was when I said that Sea Star had a strong affinity for all whales and called them to her when she was out on the water.

Astonished, Erik blurted out, “We saw that! Last summer in Alaska, whales were all around us, and not around other ships!”

With that light note, we proceeded to energetically clear the ship.

I removed the dense, possessive energies of a woman who was one of the original owners and of a later owner who quit sailing because of ill and disruptive children. The Teevins identified both people and were relieved to feel that dense energy shift.

I also sat alone in each cabin below deck to clear attachments from employees and guests who had spent time onboard.

In other areas, Erik and Aspin helped by spreading sea salt and noting the suggestions from Sea Star and me. We ended with a healthy, balanced ship and a

delighted team—the Teevins and their little ship that was, at last, going adventuring.

Space Clearing, Partnerships, and Soul Connections The Teevins were delighted to learn that they’d made a wise decision in purchasing and refurbishing Sea Star to pamper guests while giving them the Alaskan adventure of their dreams. They were thrilled that adventure was also Sea Star’s dream—and she was determined to have fun and protect her people and passengers. Together, the Teevins and Sea Star are proving that cooperating with space can create and sustain a successful business and partnership.

What do we learn from this case?

Observe. This savvy, intuitive couple kept looking until they connected with the ship that was looking for the same thing they were. They fine-tuned that connection with a professional space clearing that deepened their collaborative relationship so they could literally sail confidently into the future.

Listen. Everything is alive, has a soul, consciousness, responsibility, free choice—and opinions. Learning to live in a world of equals is challenging, but collaboration helps us build a world where all life thrives.

Another reason a person can lose sight of their intuition is based on their upbringing, and unfortunately, we were most likely taught as a young child to stay away from all energy. In certain instances, we may have had a bad experience causing us to shut down our psychic senses. Does this sound familiar, some of us were taught that God is judgmental and critical instead of the opposite, which is loving and joyful.

But not all energy is dark or evil.

Once we learn to control our energy, there is nothing to fear.

Honestly, there are some humans that we have no control over, including their actions.

and your dying beloved get through it. In this two-part series on preparing for death and grief, we’re covering how to prepare others, and yourself, for a beloved’s death.

Yes, it’s hard to say goodbye, harder yet to live the goodbye, but it’s possible. Be practical, careful, sensible, loving, wildly intuitive, spiritual—and follow these tips.

You’re a Family Remember that you’re a family, even if it’s just you. Yes, the dying person or animal comes first, as any proper hospice model should tell you, but prepare the family by seeing to individual needs. Barring a sudden, unexpected death, they all know it’s coming.

Guilt, worry, concern, fear, and jealousy can all show up—and amazing compassion as well.

Build Community Yes, ask for help, but be clear that anyone can refuse—and some will. It’s interesting, painful, and exhilarating to see who shows up, who doesn’t, and what new connections

you make. People often mean well, but our culture is big on avoiding feelings, and dying well requires feelings. Your community will feel with you. The rest, well, you’ll be surprised by those who don’t, especially when it’s dying animals. Remember: that’s their mindset, not yours.

Forgive and move on. Or out.

Do Your Homework Help yourself, and your beloveds understand and accept the dying process.

Figure out what it takes to care for your dying and what makes sense, decide what to do, and see that it gets done.

Do whatever you have to do so you, and yours can live with it afterward.

You and your family, human and animal, get to decide what death looks like, from how you meet it to how you carry on afterward. Nobody else. Yes, listen to others, but only hang on to what makes sense to you and to your dying beloveds at the moment. That’s all any of us can do—and all the dying really ask of us.

Having experienced my brother’s death with absolutely no warning, I’m a strong advocate for preparing children for their own and a sibling’s death—for any death, human or animal. It’s gut-wrenching but necessary.

For example, did you know that a common feeling among surviving children is that they were responsible for a sibling’s death, even if it was an illness? Learn from my unnecessary and debilitating angst: I knew better, even at nine, but that peculiar, unearned guilt haunted me for at least fifteen years. You have to choose how you face dying and death, and if you’re a parent, you’re choosing for everyone. So wise up.

With luck, you’ll get to accompany an animal through old age. What can you manage, afford, and stand?

How do you explain it to your animal, the family, and yourself? Before you even get an animal, consider how and why your family will walk that last road together, because it always ends one way—in heartbreak. If that makes

you flinch, excellent: it means you’re thinking. You’ll figure out a way to get through it because that’s what life is all about. Life with an aging animal is magnificent. You will experience mystery, frustration, exhaustion, and grief, but if you’re looking for grace in action, this is it.

Get a Great Team Dying can and should be a community event, starting with your own support team.

That includes your medical and veterinary team, spiritual counselors, social workers, psychotherapists, intuitive, energy healers, hospice and grief support professionals, ministers, family, friends, and sitters—yes, people who can be with your dying so you can get a break (and a nap).

Always remember that the team is your partner, but you and your dying beloved are in charge. If you’re in charge, either as the animal owner or as the medical power of attorney, you make the decisions for and with your dying, if they are lucid. Fire anyone who thinks otherwise.

I believe your team should include an energy healer and a professional intuitive, and not just because I am one.

While there are many energy healing modalities to choose from, you can also put hands on your beloved and yourself and invite healing energy to support the dying and those left behind. There are also many intuitive out there, but not many who are practical, spiritual, and well balanced, which is what you need.

If you are a healer and/or an intuitive, hire someone else: you need a compassionate, objective outsider. I hired an intuitive for the deaths of each of my animals. She gave me an additional perspective on the tough issues and enriched my family’s last days together.

I know that neither I nor my beloveds would have done as well without that loving woman who confirmed my own insights, added others, helped us say goodbye, and was simply there as I howled with grief and loss. You hear the medical from the medical team, what you want (or not) from family and friends, what

you fear from yourself, and what love has to say from your heart—and an intuitive and healer.

These are the basics of helping your living and dying beloveds.

Use your common sense, intuition, and loving heart to add to them, so when the time comes, true grace surrounds all of you. Next month: tips for self-care as a beloved die.

or their, comfort zone we will somehow fail or be rejected.

However, fear is one of our greatest teachers and allies that can guide us to living a more fulfilling and wholehearted life.

We are all afraid of something, from the small and what can seem mundane, to the big and mighty, and when fear creeps upon us, there is no limit to what we will do to avoid it. In fact, we have built up an entire store of coping mechanisms, so we do not have to deal with what makes us afraid.

We will run from it and keep ourselves busy, turn to our unhealthy habits to suppress it, even hide from it by completely ignoring it. However, the more we choose not to engage with it, the bigger the fear gets, and when that happens, there is no escaping.

Fear holds us in lockdown, disconnected from what it is showing us about ourselves,

and keeps us in dissociative behavior. It is extremely disempowering.

As a Shadow Work Coach, fear always presents itself as a psychological block that prevents the client from accessing the deeper lessons about where they need to go to reveal, heal and integrate whatever is coming the surface, and the necessary action they may need to take to find a resolution to internal conflict. They become paralyzed, like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

When we learn to work with fear, it becomes a gateway to a deeper understanding of self, and when engaged and embraced we can open the gate and walk through it. 1) FACING THE FEAR When we face what we are afraid of, we are creating space to actively engage with our unconscious, to shine a light on what is hidden in the darkness of our very being.

Closing the eyes, dropping into the darkness, we give ourselves permission to bring what we are most afraid of into our conscious awareness, allowing it to present itself in words or by visualizing it we begin the process of owning the fear instead of it owning us.

We begin to actively engage with it, allowing ourselves to explore it head-on.

2) EMBODYING THE FEAR We are living, breathing, emotional beings, that have a body through which to

experience life in all of its entirety. However, we have been conditioned not to feel and to deny our emotions, and this is how we have become separated, living in the head and disconnected from the body.

Therefore, if we are to face our fear, we will need to learn to be present in the body to explore deeper.

How does this fear make you feel?

What emotions does it trigger in you?

By asking these questions, we are giving ourselves permission to feel the emotions surrounding it, giving them space to be acknowledged and when we do so, we can simply let them go.

3) MOVING BEYOND THE FEAR Embodying the fear rather than being held hostage by it, helps us to open and release just that little bit more, and

activates our natural capacity to heal and transform by providing ourselves with the opportunity to open that gateway and explore what lies beyond it.

What would happen if you didn’t have that fear?

• What would your life look like?

• What would happen in your life?

• How would this make you feel?

By visualizing what lies beyond, and how that makes us feel we activate our innate ability to feel the possibilities available to us. We engage with a level of consciousness that was not available to us while we were in lockdown.

The more we sit with those possibilities, we come to know them intimately as if we are already living them, and therefore we access the courage and strength needed to take the next step, understanding it was

just a fear, not some big scary monster in the cupboard.

The more we engage with this 3-step process for engaging with fear, the more we take back control from our limited self, ensuring a healthy habitual practice, so nothing stands in our way, and we can truly start living our lives embodied in the present moment and with purpose.
