The future’s bright… …and it’s probably laser-illuminated
As xenon projector pricing reduces, so laser technology continues to improve on-screen quality
THOUGH SCEPTICISM is rife about laser illumination, here at Omnex we only see the opportunities that it presents for cinema. Whilst the retiring VPF model comes ever closer, so too do questions of projector warranties, spare parts and affordability of replacement projectors. On the plus side, cinema technology costs have reduced, and advancement of such technologies has increased. So are you getting cost-effective machines, or, in other words, more bang for your buck?
The xenon versus laser illumination debate will play a key part in this. We’re certainly increasingly optimistic — from a cinema owners’ perspective — about the range of options that are now available.
Laser may be a fairly recent cinema technology, but it is not a new technology — and, significantly, in cinemas the goal is not just improved image quality, but operational, financial and environmental improvement too. Longevity, performance and efficiency are the focus of this new wave of projectors, and that is great news.
We are proud to have played a part in recent RGB laser installations — the results are certainly impressive — and feedback from new-builds and upgrades indicates that “Layzer!” is a technology that we are increasingly asked to quote for, suggesting it’s a realistic option for many. Technologies always present options; we expand further on this with a brief guide and FAQ on p8.
