Our view

We’re back…! At the time of writing, “The Batman” is in Week 2 and its three-day weekend has just earned another £7.5m at the Box Office. In fact, the previous weekend has three titles that have achieved more than £20m to date and BTS “Permission to Dance” has just drawn $32.6m globally in one-night. So, it’s now Spring and with Easter half-term just around the corner… it’s great to see Box Office numbers continue to rise. Are we being optimistic? Well why not!? We all learned from the pandemic and “The Guardian” once again tried its

Our customer focus should be on par with your own commitment best to bang the ‘cinema is dead’ drum. Only problem? We’re not… As the UK has continued to beat the £1bn number year-on-year since 2011, we’ve certainly got a target to aim for. We’ve all had time to take stock, to look at costs and to listen to your views and we’ve strengthened our businesses offering. With your customers being such a key part of the cinema-going journey, we propose that Omnex’s own support should be on a par with your own customer-focused commitment. I encourage you to read about our services that help make technology an enabler of a growing cinema sector. Simon Tandy, MD, Omnex

Cinema? We live for it. WE ARE FORTUNATE at Omnex to have all had a background in the cinema. Most of us were, at one point, projectionists and some of us are old-timers who can say they punched tickets before working on ‘sweets’. For us, sharing what we’re doing to support cinemas feels even more timely than before. Here goes: lockdown showed us that whilst the expression ‘cash is king’ is true, it’s cashflow that drives the buoyancy of our businesses. On that, we extended our annual service plans to a lower-cost pay-monthly option. That is now a permanent feature of our business— we’re really pleased to be able to support cinemas from as little as £59 per month. With cost-savings in mind, we recently launched a new Shopping@ portal at omnex.co.uk/shop. It covers a full range of xenon lamps and filters, which can be paid for by credit card or simply added to your account. Either way, customers can purchase items at a better price any time of day or night.

TAKE A SEAT IN 2020, WE STARTED to share news that Omnex was providing test and inspection services for luxury recliners. This is a service we continue to provide across the UK and a number of European countries. It started as a testing and inspection service but has grown to a dedicated team of six seating technicians who also provide sales, installation and repair services. Do bear us in mind if your seating merits attention.

VPF… THERE’S LIFE BEYOND ARE WE STILL talking about it? Quite the opposite; with the VPF now behind us, there are a few things to bear in mind. Clearly the VPF was a real positive in supporting the transition to digital. One of the upsides was the warranties on projectors. We’re highly conscious that warranty programs deliver real peace of mind. We are now able to offer finance packages — where required — so that, when the time comes, you can purchase a projector with five years’ warranty and support. In a nutshell? Piece of mind from as little as £595 per month. CREDIT: NFT1, BFI Southbank www.omnex.co.uk

At Aboyne, a cinema re-fit that serves as a fitting tribute Pete Naples reports on a community cinema that’s a lasting testament to the much-loved cinema enthusiast, David Eastwood.

David expected the local council to go 50/50 on a projector. They paid outright.

fitted because this is a multi-use theatre and they are moved as required. It’s worth mentioning that the QSC DPA 4.2 amplifiers hold a loudspeaker database on board, so it’s vital to configure them appropriately. With that done and the CP950 configured using Dolby Atmos Designer software (so it knows amplifiers, speakers and room dimensions), the EQ required to tune the system was minimal. A Blustream matrix switcher allows easy selection of Blu-ray, satellite and PC sources, with a preview monitor connected so it’s not essential to have the projector on, or the screen down when tuning the satellite receiver. A FEW DAYS BEFORE the re-opening, I received a call from Brian Forbes, with the terrible news that David had passed agreed to pay outright, on the grounds that they bought the original and their own CV19 rules had contributed to the failure through months of neglect. So we supplied a new Christie CP2310 RGBe, with IMB S3 and NAS. I headed to Aboyne and removed the old sound equipment and projector then collected my colleague Geoff from Aberdeen. The next day CineLogistics arrived with the new projector, and we swapped it on the pedestal. The Solaria One + and the CP2310 RGBe share a footprint so this was quite simple. We removed the old KEF surrounds, putting in the new QSC 8200. We added QSC 8200s to the rear wall, doubling the number of rear surrounds, and re-wired

The gain structure is set in a specific way to maximise signal-to-noise ratios and to maximise equipment headroom. Engineers deploy specialist calibrated test tools and audio setup programs. These are used on the latest cinema processors to ensure sound is optimised for your auditorium. A crucial part of the setup, gain structure helps to maximise the perfect sound reproduction. AAM’s Producer

Producer: driving a new era of circuit management By building workflow efficiency, reducing operational costs, and improving customer engagement, Producer is set to revolutionise circuit management. AFTER A TESTING period for the global cinema industry, we have entered a new era of theatre entertainment. An era which demands an unparalleled movie-going experience, where your schedules are maximised and customer service is unforgettable. To help theatres continue their quest to recovery, Arts Alliance Media has introduced its all-new Producer Circuit Management System (CMS). For the tech-sceptics, this isn’t an ordinary

of progressive circuit software — a fundamental requirement for modernday operations. With new-found task automations and circuit-wide visibility, streamlining an entire network’s task load through a single dashboard is now no longer a pipedream, it’s a reality, and for cinemas the timing couldn’t be more welcome. By removing mass task duplication and building workflow efficiency, site-level staff can focus on the priority at hand. The experience of their audiences.

Simplify pre-show scheduling FROM ONE CENTRAL LOCATION, Producer enables users to harness in-depth playlist segments and dynamic targeting tools, known as ‘splits’, to tailor specific pre-show content to features based on expected audience. From location and date, to show time and rating, pre-show marketing can be accurately and intricately distributed.

Control content with ease WITH ENHANCED VISIBILITY over each device, for every screen, at all sites, centrally managing content has never been more flexible. Now, users can search an entire circuit for specific content, identify which devices its stored on, check their usage status, and generate detailed reports for post-playback analysis.

Schedule playlists easily and efficiently USING A TRIED AND TESTED INTERFACE, users can create and schedule new autoplaylists which will automatically assign content based on your pre-defined parameters, before distributing them to your chosen theatres. And, with new macro functionality, you can further simplify playlist creation by allowing Producer to detect and insert specific auditorium commands, such as ‘Show Start’ and ‘House Lights Off’.

Prevent missed shows and lost opportunities WITH THE ALL-NEW, EASY-TO-VIEW TASKS FEED, users can gain real-time visibility over every site to prevent show-stopping issues and maintain smooth day-to-day circuit management. From highlighting missing keys and content, to identifying playlist and site issues, Producer’s advanced search filters and practical timeline view ensures simple, systematic circuit control.
