Guests and strollers on the Croisette would be hard put not to notice it: 73 La Croisette has undergone a genuine metamorphosis!

Even the name has changed: it is no longer the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez, but simply the Hôtel Martinez. A change of name and a change of decor, or better still, a whole new mindset, combining a rebirth of the past – a nod to the Roaring Twenties – and a resolutely modern vision of what a five-star experience should look like in 2018: luxurious, elegant and carefree. The transformations that kicked off in November 2016 have focused on opening up the hotel onto the beautiful town of Cannes, renewing with the charm of Mediterranean lifestyle. Spiced with retro-chic notes, the Mediterranean way of life was also the inspiration behind the new garden design, while Thirties Art Deco has joined hands with the Riviera yachting world to adorn the hotel’s new living areas.

Mediterranean lifestyle is indeed an intrinsic part of our founding philosophy, which we venture to resume in two words: carpe diem.

Difficile à nos hôtes comme aux promeneurs de la Croisette de ne pas le remarquer, c’est une mue qui s’est opérée au 73 La Croisette. D’ailleurs, ne dites plus Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez, mais Hôtel Martinez. Un changement de nom pour un changement de décor, ou mieux : un nouvel esprit. À la lisière entre une renaissance du passé, clin d’œil volontaire aux Années folles, et une vision résolument moderne de ce qu’est, en 2018, une expérience cinq étoiles : luxueuse, élégante, et décomplexée. Pour cela, les transformations qui ont débuté depuis novembre 2016 sont allées dans le sens d’une ouverture de l’hôtel sur cet écrin qu’est la ville de Cannes, pour renouer avec les charmes de l’art de vivre méditerranéen.

C’est ce «Mediterranean way of life » aux accents rétro-chic qui a déterminé la conception du jardin, c’est également lui qui s’est mêlé à l’Art Déco des années 30 et à l’univers du yachting, Riviera oblige, pour habiller nos nouveaux espaces. C’est enfin lui qui sera le fil rouge de notre philosophie, que nous oserions résumer en deux mots : carpe diem. Une expérience unique, à vivre dans un décor historique : nul étonnement donc à ce que notre établissement figure désormais dans la collection des hôtels uniques et indépendants de The Unbound Collection by Hyatt. Plus qu’une destination, l’Hôtel Martinez est désormais une invitation.

APRÈS UNE PHASE PRÉPARATOIRE, L’HÔTEL MARTINEZ A ENTAMÉ EN NOVEMBRE 2017 SA GRANDE CURE DE JOUVENCE. AU TERME DE DEUX ÉTAPES DE RÉNOVATION, L’HÔTEL RÉVÈLE SON NOUVEAU DÉCOR : UNE VERSION RIVIERA CHIC DU STYLE HISTORIQUE ART DÉCO. UNE MÉTAMORPHOSE D’ENVERGURE, ORCHESTRÉE PAR L’ARCHITECTE PIERRE-YVES ROCHON.

After a preparatory phase, the Hôtel Martinez entered its grand makeover in November 2017. After two rounds of renovations, the hotel reveals a brand new décor: a chic Riviera version of the historical Art Deco style. Architect Pierre Yves Rochon orchestrated this massive metamorphosis.

L’un des moments forts de ce vaste relooking, clap de départ de la fermeture totale de l’hôtel, fut la vente aux enchères caritative du mobilier et des objets de l’ancienne décoration (plus de 300 lots) initiée le 31 octobre 2017. Orchestrée par Maître Besch, cette dernière fut un véritable succès : les Cannois étaient très nombreux à ce rendez-vous et près de 79 000 euros ont été collectés au profit de l’association « Le Rayon de Soleil de Cannes », dont la mission est d’accueillir, protéger et accompagner les enfants de familles en difficulté. « Avec cette vente, c’est une page qui se tourne», confiait alors Alessandro Cresta, directeur général. L’univers Art Déco qui a toujours constitué l’ADN de l’hôtel a néanmoins été conservé, dans une version désormais plus contemporaine, inspirée du yachting et de l’art de vivre méditerranéen. Un esprit insufflé tant dans les chambres que dans les espaces communs.

L’ART DÉCO MADE IN RIVIERA Au bord de La Croisette, les visiteurs remarqueront que la transformation a donné lieu à

un magnifique jardin d’essences méridionales , conçu comme une place de village. Les amateurs d’histoire saisiront rapidement la volonté de Pierre-Yves Rochon de faire renaître la terrasse d’origine du Martinez, haut lieu de la Côte d’Azur des Années folles, reconstitué ici presque à l’identique. « Nous avions à cœur de nous ouvrir sur la vie cannoise », précise Alessandro Cresta, avant d’ajouter : « des soirées guinguette y seront organisées dès ce printemps ».

Une fois passée la monumentale porte d’entrée vitrée, place à un bain de lumière : grands volumes et matériaux nobles (marbre, terrazzo) viennent épurer le hall, dans le plus pur esprit Art Déco. Çà et là, des éléments renforcent l’identité du lieu : un magistral lustre Art Déco, une longue cheminée traversant le mur de marbre. Un espace résolument contemporain, assurément élégant.

COCONS EN BORDS DE MER Il faudra ensuite traverser de longs couloirs à la moquette stylisée très Art Déco, puis passer le seuil d’une porte

digne d’un luxueux paquebot, pour pénétrer dans les nouvelles chambres, pensées comme des appartements de bord de mer. Place à l’esprit luxueux de la French Riviera des années 30, avec, toujours, une touche contemporaine.

Cette dernière se glissera d’abord dans l’équipement ultra moderne de ces nouveaux espaces pensés jusqu’au moindre détail. Partout : luxe et pureté. Des meubles laqués blancs aux touches colorées, tantôt bleu clair, tantôt jaune, en passant par un sol de terrazzo, sans oublier l’agréable sensation d’espace créée par un savant jeu de miroirs. Surprise, en découvrant les salles de bains, au look rétro chic, grâce notamment à un mobilier design habillé de laque, ou aux murs de marbre blanc.

Surprise encore, en ouvrant le dressing, véritable malle de voyage de cuir et de bois. Absolument tout, ici, fera de votre séjour à l’Hôtel Martinez une expérience unique.

One of the high points of this vast makeover - kicking off the hotel’s complete closure for refurbishment work - was the charity auction on October 31st, 2017 of its old furniture and decorative objects (over 300 items). Steered by Maitre Besch, the event was a massive success, attracting many buyers and raising nearly €79,000 for the association “Le Rayon de Soleil de Cannes”, whose mission is to welcome, care for and accompany children from families in difficulty. “This auction marks the end of an era”, confided General Manager Alessandro Cresta at the time. Although the hotel has preserved the Art Deco style forming an intrinsic part of its DNA, today’s version is more contemporary, inspired by Yachting and Mediterranean lifestyle. A spirit that reigns in the rooms and communal areas alike.

ART DECO MADE IN RIVIERA Visitors strolling along the Croisette will notice that the

transformation has resulted in a magnificent garden planted with Mediterranean species, designed to resemble a village square. History lovers will appreciate the reappearance of the legendary Martinez terrace, virtually identical to the original, courtesy of Pierre-Yves Rochon. “We wanted to open up onto life in Cannes”, says Alessandro Cresta, before adding: “We’ll be hosting old-fashioned style dance evenings there from Spring onwards”. A pool of light welcomes guests as they step through the monumental glazed entrance door, with spacious volumes and noble materials (marble and terrazzo) adorning the fussfree lines of the foyer in purest Art Deco style. Here and there, statement items reinforce the hotel’s new identity: a majestic Art Deco chandelier and long fireplace crossing the marble wall. A resolutely contemporary and eminently elegant space.

COCOONS BY THE MED After crossing long corridors laid with Art Deco carpet and pushing open a door fit for a world-class liner, guests enter the hotel’s new rooms, designed to resemble seaside apartments. 1930’s French Riviera opulence reigns here, enhanced with contemporary touches such as the ultra-modern amenities adorning these delightful new spaces curated down to the tiniest detail in a spirit of luxury and purity. Lacquered white furniture with colourful touches of pale blue and yellow rubs shoulders with terrazzo flooring, while mirrors create a wonderful sensation of spaciousness. The bathrooms also have plenty of surprises in store with their retro-chic look created with a blend of contemporary, lacquered furniture and white marble walls. More treats await guests in the closet – a genuine travel trunk in leather and wood. The promise of an absolutely unique experience at the Hôtel Martinez.

Hôtel Martinez is unveiling a new restaurant this year - Version Originale – in place of the lobby bar. Welcome to a delightful venue, set facing the beautiful gardens and sea.

Version Originale is an ode to harmony and clever combinations, from the elegant Art Deco decor spiked with candy-colour touches reminiscent of Miami Beach in the Fifties, all the way to the plate, where Chef Christian Sinicropi invites guests on a voyage along the Mediterranean shores and further still. His secret? Cuisine sans frontières, as demonstrated by his Fondue Bouillabaisse, cleverly marrying the ingredients of this Provencal classic with a Chinese fondue. The same goes for the Soupe de la Mama, a revisited minestrone, or the regional specialities cooked in clay pots made by the Chef himself, inspired by the Moroccan Tanjia. The menu features a sumptuous array of dishes the whole table can dip into; a genuine ode to the Martinez passion for sharing.

Voilà un lieu qui sait jouer des harmonies et des mélanges : dans le décor tout d’abord, qui mêle savamment l’élégance de l’Art Déco aux touches acidulées d’un Miami Beach des années 50.

Dans l’assiette ensuite, puisque le Chef Christian Sinicropi propose ici un voyage le long des rives de la Méditerranée… et plus loin encore. Son secret ? S’affranchir des frontières. Il en sera ainsi de sa Fondue Bouillabaisse, qui convoque les produits de la spécialité provençale à une fondue chinoise. Même esprit pour la soupe de la Mama, un minestrone revisité, ou encore des spécialités régionales cuisinées dans des cocottes en terre confectionnées par le Chef lui-même, dans l’inspiration d’une tanjia marocaine. 1929, comme un clin d’œil aux années folles, lorsque belles mondaines et industriels américains fuyant la prohibition, venaient s’encanailler sur la Riviera. Tous les soirs, il est désormais possible de découvrir au Martinez Bar une carte de cocktails faisant la part belle aux grands classiques réédités, ainsi qu’à des créations inédites. Les amoureux de mixologie seront en émoi devant les promesses du chariot à gin : une vingtaine de références, tout autant de choix de tonics, et une dizaine de condiments… Soit une infinité de combinaisons possibles ! Clou du spectacle : l’offre de pintxos gastronomiques, cuisinés sur une « plancha teppan ».

Imaginé par le Chef Christian Sinicropi, ce concept inédit de showcooking mêle l’inspiration japonaise du teppanyaki aux saveurs méditerranéennes. Le show, jusqu’aux papilles !

A nod to 1929 and the Roaring Twenties, when American high society women and industrialists fled the Prohibition to kick up a storm on the Riviera, the Martinez Bar’s cocktail menu features a tempting line-up of revamped classics and original creations served every evening. The new gin trolley promises plenty of good surprises for mixology aficionados too, with around 20 references, just as many tonics and a dozen or so condiments for infinite mixing & matching possibilities. The highlight of the show? The gastronomic Pintxos cooked on a Teppanyaki Griddle. Imagined by Chef Christian Sinicropi, this revolutionary show cooking concept combines Japanese Teppanyaki inspiration with Mediterranean flavours. The show must go on – it’s a question of good taste!

Во время реконструкции отеля Martinez, 31 октября 2017 года, состоялся благотворительный аукцион, который стал одним из самых ярких событий последних лет в Каннах и имел оглушительный успех. Организацию мероприятия взял на себя господин Беш (Maître Besch). Продажа предметов интерьера и декоративных антикварных вещей принесла почти 79 000 евро. Вырученные средства были переданы организации Le Rayon de Soleil de Cannes, которая помогает детям из трудных семей. Обновленный фасад отеля теперь навевает мысли о беззаботном образе жизни средиземноморского побережья, о прогулках на яхтах. Несмотря на добавление современных деталей, стиль арт-деко в целом был сохранен.

Здесь присутствует вкус роскоши времен Французской Ривьеры 30-х годов, каждая деталь интерьера продумана до мелочей. Изящество и безупречная чистота во всем. Лакированная белая мебель с элементами декора небесно-голубого или лимонного цвета, венецианский мозаичный «тераццо» и игра зеркал создают особое волшебное пространство. Ванные комнаты выполнены в ретро-стиле: лакированная мебель и стены из белого мрамора. А в гардеробной сюрприз – великолепный дорожный сундук из кожи и дерева. В отеле Martinez Вас ждет поистине роскошный и неповторимый отдых.

MENTORAT ARTISTIQUE VERSION 2.18 Début février 2018 à Berlin, Rolex a non seulement célébré les 15 ans de son initiative culturelle, mais également dévoilé les quatre nouveaux duos d’artistes choisis pour le mentorat 2018-19.

Une édition qui sera marquée par une augmentation des fonds disponibles : 40 000 francs suisses pour les protégés et 100 000 pour les mentors (ainsi que de quoi couvrir les frais de voyage et autres dépenses majeures), avec la mise à disposition de 30 000 francs suisses supplémentaires pour les protégés, en vue d’une nouvelle création une fois la période de mentorat terminée. Écrivain, essayiste et journaliste basé à New York et originaire d’Irlande, Colm Tóibín a plus d’une corde à son arc et tentera d’en apporter quelques-unes à celui de Colin Barrett, lui aussi irlandais et ayant reçu 3 prix en 2014 pour sa série littéraire Young Skins. Enfin, le musicien indien Zakir Hussain, considéré comme le plus grand joueur de tabla au monde, guidera Marcus Gilmore, un jazzman de New York.

TOUS LES CHEMINS MÈNENT À « ROMA » Roma, c’est le dernier film du réalisateur Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter, Les Fils de l’homme, Gravity, Y tu mamá también…), mentor Rolex de l’édition 2016-17. Ayant eu lui-même de nombreux mentors durant sa carrière, il est devenu celui de Chaitanya Tamhane, après avoir été séduit par l’unique long-métrage de ce dernier, Court. Afin de l’aider à réaliser son prochain film, portant sur la musique classique indienne, Alfonso Cuarón l’a invité sur le tournage de Roma. Investissement quotidien, façon de travailler, de relever tous les défis, de parer à tous les obstacles… Le célèbre réalisateur a transmis à son protégé toutes les clés pour lui permettre d’exprimer pleinement son talent.

MENTOR AND PROTÉGÉ ARTS VERSION 2.18 In February 2018 in Berlin, Rolex not only celebrated the 15th anniversary of its cultural initiative, it also unveiled the four new mentor-protégé pairs selected for the 2018-19 campaign.

The upcoming edition will be marked by increased funding, with 40,000 Swiss Francs for the protégés and 100,000 for the mentors (destined to cover travel and other major expenses), together with an additional 30,000 Swiss Francs to help protégés fund a new creation at the end of the mentoring period. New too: instead of the usual 12-month collaboration, each pair will now benefit from a two-year period, allowing them to spend at least six weeks together.

DYNAMIC DUOS The new mentor-protégé pairs include Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite, who will be guiding Senegalese street dance pioneer Khoudia Touré, while Colm Tóibín – a New York-based author, essayist and journalist originating from Ireland – will be offering some of the many strings from his bow to Colin Barrett, also from Ireland and 3-times prizewinner in 2014 for his literary collection Young Skins. Finally, Indian musician Zakir Hussain, acclaimed as the world’s greatest tabla player, will be guiding New York jazzman Marcus Gilmore.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO “ROMA” Roma is the latest film by director Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter, Children of Men, Gravity, And Your Mother Too), also a Rolex 2016-17 mentor. After benefiting from many mentors during his own career, he paired up with director Chaitanya Tamhane after seeing Court, his only feature film to date. To help Chaitanya make his next film on Indian classic music, Alfonso Cuarón invited him on the set of Roma, where he was able to hand down to his protégé the keys to expressing his talent to the full: daily implication, working methods, meeting challenges and circumventing obstacles....

The new partnerships will be announced in 2020, on the themes of film, dramatic arts, visual arts and a fourth discipline yet to be revealed.

Après Somewhere en 2010, La Proie a été votre second rôle dans un film de Sofia Coppola. Y’a-t-il des différences entre travailler avec une réalisatrice plutôt qu’un réalisateur ? J’ai travaillé avec Sofia pour la première fois alors que je n’avais que 11 ans. Elle m’a initiée à de nombreux aspects du monde de la réalisation. Sur ses plateaux de tournage, les amis sont toujours présents, créant une atmosphère conviviale et propice au jeu, un lieu sûr qui reflète directement la personnalité de la réalisatrice. Je développe un lien unique avec chaque réalisateur, le sexe de la personne importe peu. J’aimerais vivre dans un monde dans lequel on

Quels sont vos derniers projets ? J’ai tourné dans Galveston, un thriller réalisé par Mélanie Laurent qui sortira au cours de l’année. Je viens également de terminer le tournage d’une comédie musicale, Teen Spirit, dans laquelle je réalise mon rêve de devenir une pop star.

L’histoire se passe en Angleterre et suit l’aventure d’une fille qui participe à un concours de chant. Cet été, je reprendrai mon rôle de Princesse Aurore pour le tournage du deuxième Maléfique à Londres !

L’année dernière à Cannes, le fait de passer du temps avec ces femmes remarquables a été une expérience incroyable pour moi. J‘observe et apprends auprès de chaque ambassadrice. On m’a offert l’opportunité de représenter la génération montante et de continuer à promouvoir la beauté intérieure. Savoir s’aimer tout entière c’est essentiel, surtout en valorisant les détails qui nous rendent uniques.

Absolument !

Pourquoi les femmes portent-elles du maquillage selon vous ? Le maquillage est un moyen d’expression à travers lequel chacune peut exprimer son individualité et mettre en valeur les parties d’elle-même qui l’aident à se sentir confiante.

En 2016, The Neon Demon a été présenté à Cannes. Vous y incarnez une mannequin montante dont la beauté éveille une jalousie féroce chez ses amies. Les femmes sont-elles vraiment aussi jalouses entre elles ? The Neon Demon est une sorte de leçon de vie. Ce type d’histoire a déjà été raconté sous de nombreux jours : une jeune fille arrive dans une grande ville, qui la poussera à se corrompre. Nic a choisi de renverser ce scénario classique en me faisant passer pour le démon plutôt que la simple victime. Qui plus est, l’histoire se déroule dans l’univers de la mode, rendant le spectacle encore plus glamour auprès du public. Je pense que chaque scénario a son côté sombre, et ce concernant tous les aspects de la vie. La jalousie est un vilain défaut, mais c’est une émotion que nous avons tous eu l’occasion de ressentir en tant qu’humains. Plutôt que de se laisser emporter par la jalousie, nous devrions partager nos points forts respectifs afin de nous soutenir mutuellement.

Et vous ? Quel est votre rituel beauté ? Mon look de tous les jours est plutôt naturel. Je commence par nettoyer ma peau avant de l’humidifier et de la protéger contre le soleil. J’adore le True Match Crayon Correcteur de L’Oréal, il convient parfaitement au teint clair de ma peau. Je l’utilise le matin pour effacer les cernes et les imperfections. Ensuite je mets un peu de mascara, je noue rapidement mes cheveux en chignon et je suis prête pour attaquer ma journée !

Selon vous, quels sont les produits essentiels à avoir sur soi pour monter les marches ?

Je prends toujours mon Mascara Lash Paradise dans ma pochette pour le tapis rouge. Il rend mes cils légers et volumineux. J’emporte également un rouge à lèvres Color Riche, de préférence la teinte ‘Moka Chic’ matte ; c’est le mélange parfait entre pêche et rose.

You dazzled Cannes with two films last year (The Beguiled by Sofia Coppola and How to Talk to Girls at Parties by John Cameron Mitchell). What are your latest projects?

Mélanie Laurent directed me in a thriller, ‘Galveston,’ which will be out later this year. And I recently finished a film called ‘Teen Spirit’ where I got to live out my dream of becoming a pop star.

It is a musical set in England about a girl who tries out for a singing competition. This summer, I will be working in London, reprising my role as Princess Aurora in the second Maleficent!

After Somewhere in 2010, The Beguiled was the second Sofia Coppola film you starred in. Is it different being directed by a woman?

The first time I worked with Sofia I was 11 years old. In many ways, she was my introduction into moviemaking and film sets. Her sets are filled with her friends. It is such a warm environment to play in and that safe space is a direct product of Sofia’s loving personality. I feel like I create a special bond with each director I work with, regardless of gender. I would like to live in a world where people stop differentiating male and female directors. Progress is being made, but there still is a long way to go, regarding women filmmakers and stories about women for women.

In 2016, you presented The Neon Demon in Cannes, embodying an aspiring model whose beauty sparked ferocious jealousy from her friends. Are women really that jealous of each other in real life? ‘The Neon Demon’ was a cautionary tale of sorts. A story that has been told in many different forms before, a young girl comes to the big city and is corrupted. Nic turned that classic genre on its head and actually made me the demon, instead of just the victim. Also, setting the film in the fashion world made for a more glamorous spectacle to watch.

I do believe there are dark sides to every scenario, in every aspect of life. Jealousy is a nasty quality, but it a human quality we have all felt at one point in time. Instead of being jealous we should draw from each other’s strengths to support one another.

At just 19 years of age you became part of the family of L’Oréal muses, in the footsteps of actresses such as Helen Mirren and Eva Longoria. What does this ambassadress role mean to you? Being a part of the L’Oréal family is a great responsibility. I look up to each ambassador and learn from them. Spending time with these remarkable ladies in Cannes last year was extremely special.

that beauty comes from within. It is so crucial to love all parts of yourself, especially the ones that make you unique.

It totally !

Why do you think women wear make-up?

Make-up is a creative outlet where people can express their individuality, and enhance the parts of themselves that make them feel confident.

How about you? What’s your beauty routine? My everyday beauty look is pretty natural. I start with cleansing my skin. Then I put on moisturizer and sunscreen. I love the L’Oréal True Match crayon concealer stick. It is a perfect shade for my pale skin and I use it every morning to cover dark circles and blemishes. I swipe on some mascara, throw my hair up into a messy bun, and am good to go!

And what would be your go-to products for the red carpet? Lash Paradise Mascara is always in my red carpet bag. It makes my eyelashes feathery and soft. Also, the Color Riche lipstick in matte, preferably the ‘Moka Chic’ shade! It is a perfect balance between peach and blush.

Ce que le cinéma doit aux femmes WHAT THE MOVIES OWE TO WOMEN They don’t only make their mark as actresses, they also dazzle behind the camera and pioneered the creation of the film industry. But how many people know the real story?

L’an dernier à Cannes, le Prix du scénario (créé en 1949) était décerné à la Britannique Lynne Ramsay pour A Beautiful Day. Une première depuis 2004 et le prix accordé alors à Comme une image, écrit par Agnès Jaoui, devenue ce jourlà, la première femme de l’histoire à l’obtenir. Comptez : cela faisait treize ans de disette. Incroyable ? Attendez la suite.

Car, de la même manière, si durant cette année 2017 le Prix du meilleur réalisateur est allé à une réalisatrice (Sofia Coppola pour Les Proies), cela n’était pas arrivé depuis 56 ans et la récompense accordée, au terme du Festival 1961, à la Soviétique Ioulia Solntseva... Leur domination dura jusqu’en 1929 et la Grande Dépression, laquelle poussa beaucoup d’hommes ruinés à quitter la côte Est pour la Californie où ils commencèrent à occuper le terrain, reléguant les femmes à des postes subalternes et imposant surtout l’idée que les productions du 7ème Art devaient être une distraction : finis les films volontiers engagés ou sociaux. Les comédies s’imposaient. Et le rôle des femmes se trouvait balayé. « À partir des années 40, l’histoire du cinéma a été écrite par les vainqueurs » dit l’historienne Ally Acker. « Et les vainqueurs, ce furent les hommes ». Puisse le prochain palmarès cannois réparer un peu encore cette injustice.

A TRIBUTE TO THE MOVIE INDUSTRY’S WOMEN A magnificent documentary (Women Who Run Hollywood by Julia and Clara Kuperberg) presented at Cannes in 2016 delivered the message with a punch, revealing that women occupied key positions – scriptwriters, directors and producers – as far back as 1910. The very first American studio (Solax) was founded by a French woman, Alice Guy, a contemporary of the Lumière brothers. The first film made in colour? An American woman: Lois Weber, who was also a genuine writing (and directing) machine, turning out 300 films within a decade. Women dominated the industry up to the Great Depression in 1929, which drove many ruined men to leave the East Coast and head to California, where they began to occupy the field, relegating women to underdogs and imposing the idea that movies should above all be entertaining: the days of militant and socially-aware films were over and the role of women was swept away with them. “From the Forties onwards, movie history was written by the winners,” says historian Ally Acker. “And the winners were men”. May the next Cannes awards go a step further in putting things to rights.

Last year in Cannes, British director Lynne Ramsay won the Best Screenplay Award (created in 1949) for A Beautiful Day - a unique event since 2004, when the prize went to the first woman ever, Agnès Jaoui, for Comme Une Image. Just do the maths: that’s a whopping 13-year gap. Unbelievable? Wait until you hear the rest. Because similarly, although the Best Director award was won by Sofia Coppola for The Beguiled in 2017, it was the first time in 56 years that a woman had won the prize, since Russian director Ioulia Solntseva swept it up in 1961...

So, do women really have two left hands when it comes to saying “Action”? Why are they still absent from the podium so often?

WHERE ARE ALL THE WOMEN? First and foremost, it’s a question of statistics: in France, out of the 400 or so films produced every year, 20% are directed by women – a figure on the increase. But only 7% are directed by women in the US. So, it’s not surprising if only one woman has received the Golden Palm in the last 71 years (Jane Campion in 1993 for The Piano). And what about the Academy Awards? To this day, Kathryn Bigelow (in 2010 for The Hurt Locker) remains

The wildest parties were on the Riviera, in the Martinez Bar, to be more precise!

Tendres furent les nuits méditerranéennes pour Francis Scott Fitzgerald et sa pétillante épouse, Zelda, quand, à l’été 1923, ils rejoignirent la Côte auprès de leurs riches amis, le couple Murphy. On raconte même que l’auteur de Gatsby le Magnifique aimait venir sur la Croisette, au Bar du Martinez exactement, pour y goûter ses cocktails préférés à base de Gin. Les futurs héros du roman Tendre est la nuit (1934) incitèrent ensuite artistes et célébrités à passer leurs étés dans l’eau et au soleil de la Méditerranée. À l’aristocratie régnant sur l’hiver azuréen depuis la moitié du XIXe siècle, se conjugua donc, l’été venu, une intelligentsia extravagante et excitante. Coco Chanel choquait déjà son monde en affichant son bronzage après une croisière avec le duc de Westminster.

La joyeuse bande composée, au fur et à mesure des étés, de Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Fernand Léger, Jean Cocteau, les Murphy et les Fitzgerald, organisait des piqueniques sur la plage ou des compétitions en costumes de bain extravagants, entre deux sherry frappés préparés par Gerald Murphy, comme l’écrivit leur ami John Dos Passos dans La Belle Vie. Man Ray photographiait tout ce beau monde et Picasso dessinait la belle Sara Murphy.

Tender were the Mediterranean nights for Francis Scott Fitzgerald and his bubbly wife Zelda when they descended on the French Riviera with their wealthy friends the Murphys in the summer of 1923. Even the author of The Great Gatsby himself is said to have loved La Croisette, the Martinez Bar to be precise, where he would sit and enjoy his favourite gin cocktails. The future heroes of the novel Tender Is the Night (1934) started attracting artists and celebrities to spend their summers in the Mediterranean sea and sun. An extravagant and exciting intelligentsia crossing over into the preserve of the aristocracy, who had ruled the Riviera in winter since the mid-19th century. Coco Chanel was already shocking fans by flaunting her tan after catching too much sun on a cruise with the Duke of Westminster. Through the summers, the merry band would consist of Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Fernand Léger, Jean Cocteau, the Murphys and the Fitzgeralds. They organised beach picnics and extravagant swimsuit competitions between iced sherries prepared by Gerald Murphy himself, as their friend John Dos Passos later wrote in The Best Times. Man Ray photographed the lot of them and Picasso drew the beautiful Sara Murphy.

EFFERVESCENCE AU 73 LA CROISETTE À cette époque, un somptueux hôtel prenait place en baie de Cannes, un joyau architectural dans le plus pur style Art Déco : l’Hôtel Martinez. Rapidement, le lieu devint le rendezvous prisé du gotha international. Il faut dire que l’ambiance qui y régnait alors illustrait à merveille l’esprit d’insouciance et d’élégance des années folles : sur sa sublime terrasse, les vacanciers se prélassaient, regardant peut-être passer les riches élégantes dans leurs belles automobiles, et les pin-ups s’alignaient pour un concours de beauté, avant de rejoindre la plage pour quelque sport de plein air ! Le soir venu, c’est tout le gotha de l’époque qui s’y pressait, à l’instar de Mistinguett qui s’y produisit d’ailleurs deux fois : la première à l’occasion d’un dîner de gala en 1930, pour y revenir après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le glamour, déjà, sur fond de French Riviera.

An architectural gem in the purest Art Deco style that rapidly became very popular with the international elite. It would have exuded the carefree spirit and elegance of the Roaring Twenties. Holidaymakers lazing in the sun on its magnificent terrace before taking to the beach for some outdoor sport, watching the rich and elegant drive by in their beautiful cars, and the pin-ups line up for a beauty contest! The elite crowded there in the evening. People like Mistinguett who, what’s more, made two appearances on the hotel stage: first at a gala dinner in 1930 and again after the Second World War. French Riviera glamour had arrived.

On l’appelait The King of Fashion. Paul Poiret, apprenti de Doucet et de Worth, chamboule la mode au début du XXe siècle : en libérant les femmes des corsets, il révolutionne la silhouette Belle Époque. Il préfigure le style Art Déco avec des lignes droites, géométriques, et sa fascination pour l’orientalisme entre des robes abatjour et des manteaux-kimonos. L’artiste est aussi un visionnaire qui déjà invente la diversification dans la mode en créant notamment des parfums et des articles de décoration. Après avoir fermé sa maison en 1929, il n’entrera au panthéon des grands de la mode que dans les années 80.

UNE RENAISSANCE ENTRE HÉRITAGE ET CONTEMPORANÉITÉ En 2018, la maison de couture de Paul Poiret revient sur le podium de la Fashion week parisienne sous les doigts de fée de la styliste Yiqing Yin. Résolument modernisés, les codes du vestiaire Poiret sont au rendez-vous : des robes drapées oversize, des doudounes portées façon kimono, des motifs exotiques, et des étoffes somptueuses. Si aucune boutique dédiée n’est encore en projet, la marque renoue avec la vision du fondateur en annonçant déjà une ligne de cosmétiques ainsi que différentes collaborations artistiques.

Paul Poiret, an apprentice of Doucet and Worth, turned the fashion world upside down in the early 20th century, freeing women from their corsets and revolutionizing the Belle Époque silhouette. Poiret heralded Art Deco style with his straight, geometric lines and fascination for Orientalism, reflected in his lampshade dresses and kimono coats. A true visionary, Poiret invented the concept of diversification in the fashion world by creating perfumes, decorative items and other spinoffs. Although his house closed in 1929, he only became part of the fashion Hall of Fame in the Eighties.

A REBIRTH COMBINING HERITAGE AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN Paul Poiret’s fashion house finally stepped back onto the podium in 2018 at the Paris Fashion Week thanks to the nimble fingers of designer Yiqing Yin, who lent Poiret’s classic closet a resolutely-modern twist with her oversized draped dresses, kimono-style puffer jackets, exotic patterns and sumptuous fabrics. Although an official Poiret boutique isn’t on the agenda yet, the brand is continuing to renew ties with its founder’s vision and has already announced a cosmetics range and collaborations with various artists.

Arty, glamour, à la lisière entre le charme du passé et une touche résolument contemporaine, le bâtiment inspiré des beach house floridiennes séduit par son architecture Art Déco propre à Miami Beach. Dans ses 363 chambres, dont 16 superbes suites, le charme du mobilier rétro-chic côtoie les indispensables du confort moderne de très haut standing. At No. 73 La Croisette, discover the renovated version of restaurant Le Jardin du Martinez. The hotel’s terrace, a thriving high-class venue during the 30s’, is now reborn. Together, let’s explore the Mediterranean essences that permeate this new luxury cocoon.

Architect and landscaper Philippe Niez was entrusted with redesigning the hotel’s “garden”. His aim was to find balance: to turn the terrace at Hotel Martinez back into a thriving placeto-be, which opens up onto the Croisette whilst remaining protected from surrounding traffic. Here, the Mediterranean is central and is represented through two main concepts. The first is to bring Provence’s natural landscape to the foot of the pine trees that line La Croisette. This was achieved by planting cork oaks, which a certain variety of Tillandsia will eventually use as a base to flourish. The second reference to the Mediterranean is broader in its design: the ground has been paved with a design similar to a Portuguese “calçada”. To the astute observer, the paving is a true reinterpretation of the sea’s blue waves. Orange trees, palm trees and jasmine complete the Riviera’s famous palette of fragrances and colours, permeating the Martinez.

Refaire de la terrasse de l’Hôtel Martinez un lieu de vie, largement ouvert sur la Croisette, mais abrité de la circulation voisine. Tel fut le subtil équilibre recherché par Philippe Niez, architecte paysagiste auquel fut confiée la conception de ce jardin. Ici, place à la Méditerranée, et ce à travers deux idées majeures. La première consista à amener sur La Croisette, au pied des pins parasols, la garrigue si provençale. Ceci grâce à la présence de chênes-lièges, que des tillandsias choisiront comme support pour s’épanouir au fil du temps. Second clin d’œil à la Méditerranée, dans sa conception plus extensive, le sol habillé de pavés à la manière d’une calçada portugaise est, pour qui prendra le temps de l’observer, une véritable réinterprétation de l’onde marine. Orangers, palmiers ou encore jasmins viennent compléter cette superbe palette d’essences et de couleurs propres à la Riviera.

Cycling-connoisseur Renaud Poutot creates products entirely made in France: his bicycles are made by hand at a production site situated in La Roche-de-Glun, in the Drôme region. Christian Sinicropi : Chef à fleur de sens THE CHEF PUTTING OUR SENSES ON THE ALERT

Every day at La Palme d’Or, Christian Sinicropi conclusively demonstrates that ‘gastronomic universe’ is not a contrived expression. More than culinary wizardry, it’s a philosophy he shares with his guests by playing all the artistic influences.

He awakens the senses with his ‘Spirit in Motion’ culinary concept, conceived as an initiatory taste journey, and delivers his message.

de brebis, sachetti et jambon d’agneau, « la genèse donc » précise le chef, qui décline ensuite un second mouvement axé sur le filet de la selle d’agneau, avec sarriette, pâturage et bergerie, « pour reconstituer l’écosystème du produit ». Pour terminer, une saucisse d’agneau, cuite durant 48h pour « cuisiner le terroir sans compromis ». Le concept présente en outre l’avantage de proposer une cuisine responsable.

Le gourmet devra d’abord se nourrir d’un peu de lecture, avec une lettre que lui propose Christian Sinicropi. Tout y est, et surtout cette phrase : « N’est pas gourmand qui veut ». « Tout réside dans ces mots », insiste le Chef. Sa cuisine se mérite : il faut savoir apprécier ses associations de saveurs, conçues à partir d’un orgue, tel un maître parfumeur. Pour celles-ci, Christian Sinicropi n’évoque pas d’inspiration méditerranéenne, « un terme galvaudé », et préfère parler de racines. Les siennes : le sud-est de la France et l’Italie. Il faut aussi saisir la réflexion cachée derrière chaque plat, à l’instar de son concept de l’Esprit en Mouvement.

LE BON SENS CULINAIRE Car Christian Sinicropi jongle au plaisir avec les faces de son cube en fonction des arrivages. L’assiette s’adapte au produit et non l’inverse. Même démarche raisonnée lorsqu’il décide de conserver un vivier de poissons dans la cuisine « pour pratiquer une cuisine sans gâchis ». Enfin, le Chef de la Palme d’Or aime travailler avec les producteurs locaux. « Pas parce que c’est à la mode, simplement parce que nous avons tissé des liens solides ». Celui qui aime tant raconter une histoire à travers ses plats n’a pas envie de raconter des histoires. Il est comme sa cuisine : authentique et sincère.

REPAS EN TROIS DIMENSIONS Car après la lettre du Chef, le visiteur découvrira le menu : un cube dont chaque face explore un produit ou un univers sous toutes ses facettes.

Chacun de ces thèmes se déclinant en trois temps, selon une chronologie bien précise, « un peu comme s’il y avait la chrysalide, le papillon, puis, enfin, l’effet papillon ». Illustration concrète avec l’agneau : un premier mouvement joue des textures, mêlant lait

The first thing gourmets have to digest is Christian Sinicropi’s love letter to food.

Everything is there including the phrase “It’s not greedy to want more”. The chef insists, ‘these few words are key.’

His cuisine has to be earned: you have to know how to appreciate his flavour associations, compositions created on an organ much like a master perfumer. Christian Sinicropi makes no mention of Mediterranean inspiration, ‘a hackneyed term’ in his view, when he talks about them, preferring to talk about roots instead. His own roots are in the South East of France and Italy. You also need to grasp the thinking behind each dish, his ‘Spirit in Motion’ concept.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL MEALS After the Chef’s letter, guests discover the menu. A cube with each face exploring a product or product group in all of its facets. Each theme comes in three stages that follow a clear chronology, ‘rather like chrysalis, butterfly and finally the butterfly effect’. The lamb is a practical example.

The first movement plays with textures, mixing sheep’s milk, sacchetti and lamb ham, ‘it’s genesis,’ says the chef. The second focuses on saddle fillet of lamb with savory, fold and pasture, ‘piecing together the product’s ecosystem’. And finally, a lamb sausage, cooked for 48 hours, ‘terroir cooking with no ifs or buts’. The concept moreover propounds the added advantage of responsible cooking.

CULINARY COMMON SENSE Christian Sinicropi unrestrainedly juggles the faces of his cube depending on what is available. The dish adapts to the ingredients and not vice versa. The same reasoned approach when he decided to install a fish tank in the kitchen, ‘putting nomess cuisine into practice’.

Finally, the La Palme d’Or Chef likes working with local producers. ‘Not because it’s fashionable, simply because we have forged solid links with them.’ The man who loves to tell a story with his dishes is not one to spin a yarn. He is like his cuisine: authentic and sincere.

Red Carpets, photo calls and the awards ceremony give a certain rhythm to each Cannes Film Festival ... and so does the opening jury dinner at La Palme d’Or, the Michelin-starred Martinez restaurant.

Chaque année, le Chef Christian Sinicropi éblouit les sens des convives du premier dîner officiel du jury du Festival. Servir de succulentes assiettes ? Bien trop simple, pour celui qui adapte son menu au président, ou à la présidente, convaincu que la cuisine et le cinéma ont cela en commun d’être hautement chargés en émotions. Le Chef étoilé se plonge alors dans un nouvel univers cinématographique pour en livrer sa version, adaptant même le contenu au contenant en créant, avec sa femme, les plats de céramique destinés à accueillir ses délices. Ainsi, l’année dernière, à la table de Pedro Almódovar ont défilé des assiettes inspirées des d’azulejos ibériques, suivies d’un magistral taureau sur lequel l’iconique toréador de « Parle avec Elle » côtoyait de près un plat à mi-chemin entre iode et terroir. Pour le dessert, le dîner a mis le cap sur l’Andalousie avec une douce danseuse de flamenco, référence sans équivoque au mythique Talons Aiguilles. Qu’aurat-il imaginé pour le jury 2018 présidé par l’inclassable Cate Blanchett ? On bout déjà d’impatience.

He is convinced that cuisine and cinema have a lot in common given both are highly emotionally charged. The Michelin-starred chef immerses himself in a new cinematic universe with each passing year and presents his own fabulous interpretation on specially adapted ceramics created with his wife. Last year, azulejos-inspired plates paraded to Pedro Almodovar’s table, followed by a magnificent bull upon which the iconic bullfighter from ‘Talk to Her’ got up close to a dish halfway between iodine and terroir. For dessert, the dinner set sail for Andalusia with a sweet flamenco dancer, an unequivocal reference to the legendary film ‘High Heels’. What will he have come up with for the 2018 jury president Cate Blanchett, the actress who can’t be pigeonholed? We can’t wait to find out.

Сначала гурману придется ознакомиться с письмом Кристиана Синикропи. «Не каждый может стать гурманом», — подчёркивает в нём шеф-повар. Его кухню нужно заслужить: вы должны уметь оценить его ассоциации вкусов, кроющиеся в его корнях: это юговосток Франции и Италия. Мы также должны уловить смысл, скрытый в каждом блюде, подобно его концепции Дух в Движении.

ТРЕХМЕРНОЕ БЛЮДО После письма шеф-повара посетитель откроет меню: это куб, на гранях которого каждый продукт рассматривается во всех его аспектах, в три этапа, в соответствии с хронологией, «немного, как: сначала была куколка, потом бабочка, а затем, наконец, эффект, который бабочка производит».

Кристиан Синикропи убежден в том, что общим для кулинарии и кинематографа является то, что они заряжены эмоциями. И звёздный шеф-повар погружается в новый кинематографический мир, аптировав содержимое к посуде, создав совместно с женой керамику для презентации его лакомств. В прошлом году, за столом Педро Альмодовара, угощения подавались в тарелках, вдохновленных иберийскими азулехос, а на десерт гости отправились в Андалусию с нежной танцовщицей фламенко. Что он изобрёл для жюри 2018 года под председательством ни на кого не похожей Кейт Бланшетт? Нам уже не терпится узнать.

КУЛИНАРНЫЙ ЗДРАВЫЙ СМЫСЛ Кристиан Синикропи умело жонглирует гранями своего куба, его блюдо подстраивается под продукт, а не наоборот. Тот же аргументированный подход, когда он решает держать живорыбный садок: «кухня без перерасхода». И шеф-повар La Palme d’Or работает с местными производителями «не потому, что это модно, просто потому, что мы создали прочные отношения». Он похож на свои блюда: подлинный и искренний.
