This new brand, “73 La Croisette”, also offers a chic and elegant line of ties and scarves. 2014 is also an anniversary year. The Zplage is ten years old and to celebrate this event we are offering festive evenings all summer long that are all about joie de vivre. As always, no matter what the season, our executive chef Christian Sinicropi puts his creative mind to preparing a cuisine that combines respect for ingredients with inventive flair.

The Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez is all these things: a legendary place in the Art Deco spirit, men and women who bring the place to life and fly the flag for this hotel, guests from the four corners of the planet who cross its threshold every day. In the coming months a total renovation programme will be under way, spaced out over the next three years. Elle symbolise le Festival de Cannes, attire toutes les convoitises et suscite l’émotion de ceux qui la reçoivent. Pour Chopard, elle est bien plus que cela. La Palme d’Or reste l’emblème d’une relation privilégiée avec le rendez-vous cannois et international du 7e art. En 1998, à la demande de Pierre Viot, Caroline Scheufele lui offre un nouveau visage. Depuis, l’histoire entre la manifestation et Chopard perdure. En 2014, elle prend un nouveau tour et s’auréole d’une image éco-responsable, offrant aux yeux du monde sa volonté d’œuvrer pour un luxe citoyen et respectueux de l’environnement. Pour la première fois, la Palme d’Or est réalisée en or certifié “Fairmined”. Pour Chopard, l’inédit s’inscrit dans une politique volontariste d’engagement. Symbolic of the Cannes Film Festival, it is highly coveted and causes much emotion when received. For Chopard, it is much more than that. The Palme d’Or remains the symbol of a privileged relationship with the international film industry event held in Cannes. In 1998, at the request of Pierre Viot, Caroline Scheufele gave it a new look. Since then, there has been a continuing story between the event and Chopard. In 2014, this has taken a new turn with an ecologically responsible image, presenting to the world a willingness to work for socially aware luxury that respects the environment.

For the first time, the Palme d’Or has been made with gold that is certified as ‘Fairmined’. For Chopard, this innovation is in line with its policy of commitment. e Grisogono, c’est d’abord une boutique à Genève, ouverte en 1993. Depuis, la marque a acquis ses lettres de noblesse et son fondateur, Fawaz Gruosi pare les VIP de la planète de montres et de bijoux semblables à des œuvres d’art.

Il a suffi d’un diamant noir, gemme longtemps délaissée par les joailliers, pour que Fawaz Gruosi - et à travers lui de Grisogono - attire les sunlights. En 1996, l’Italo-libanais lui consacre une collection entière de bijoux, soulevant l’enthousiasme des foules et s’imposant comme celui avec lequel il faudra désormais compter. Entre ouvertures de boutiques et créations, de Grisogono poursuit dans la voie royale tracée par son fondateur. L’année 2000 voit naître sa première collection horlogère (elle sera présentée à Bâle), baptisée “Instrumento N°Uno”. Pour les bracelets de ses montres, Fawaz Gruosi utilisera le galuchat, une première (encore). Puis, de Grisogono invente une nouvelle teinte d’or, le “Browny Brown Gold” ; et ose le mélange des diamants blancs aux diamants lactescents “Icy Diamonds”. De Grisogono vise la perfection pour chacune de ses pièces. Les designs, les matériaux ou les pierres sont ainsi choisis avec le plus grand soin. Les critères de sélection des gemmes sont Fawaz Gruosi particulièrement stricts et combinent deux dimensions principales : la couleur et la pureté. De Grisogono emploie des experts joaillers parmi les plus qualifiés au monde, capables de concrétiser les inspirations de Fawaz Gruosi en formes et en volumes.

Chaque année, la maison genevoise lance de nouveaux produits, s’implante ici et là ; elle compte désormais dix-sept boutiques à travers le monde, quelque 150 points de vente, un show-room à Paris, et a la réputation d’être l’une des forces les plus dynamiques, créatrices et avant-gardistes de la joaillerie contemporaine.

Liens d’or ou de cuir entremêlés, pleins, solides. Colorés comme l’est la vie, vibrants comme l’est l’amour. Bagues, boucles d’oreilles, pendentifs, bracelets et aujourd’hui, une montre. La collection est complète, et j’en suis fier. »

De Grisogono began as a shop, which opened in Geneva in 1993. Since then, the brand has earned its reputation and its founder, Fawaz Gruosi, now adorns VIPs of the world with watches and pieces of jewellery that look like works of art.

A black diamond, a gem jewellers had given up on a long time ago, was enough for Fawaz Gruosi – and through him de Grisogono – to attract media attention. In 1996, this ItalianLebanese devoted an entire jewellery collection to it, which was a huge success with the public and marked him out as someone to be reckoned with. In between shop openings and presentations of creations, de Grisogono follows the golden path charted by its founder. The year 2000 saw the creation of its first collection of watches (presented in Basel), which was entitled Instrumento N°Uno. Fawaz Gruosi was the first to use shagreen for the wristbands of his watches, and then de Grisogono went on to invent a new shade of gold – Browny Brown Gold – and to dare to combine white diamonds with milky Icy Diamonds. De Grisogono aims for perfection with every single piece. The designs, materials and stones therefore have to be chosen with utmost care. The criteria for gem selection are particularly strict and cover two main aspects: colour and purity. De Grisogono employs some of the most highly qualified jewellers in the world, who are able to give concrete expression to Fawaz Gruosi’s inspirations in terms of shape and size.

Every year, the Geneva-based company launches new products and establishes itself in new places; it now has 17 shops throughout the world, some 150 sales outlets and a showroom in Paris, and it has the reputation of being one of the most dynamic, creative and avant-garde forces in the jewellery trade today.

In 2011, to pay tribute to that which allowed him to reach the summits, Fawaz Gruosi designed the Black Forever watch collection; in it, the black diamond was celebrated in a big way, proving, if any proof was still required, the mastery of the craftsmen who worked with it and the inventiveness of the brand’s founder. In 2014, the new Allegra collection, dedicated to his daughter, tops the bill in Basel. Fawaz Gruosi describes it as follows: “The Allegra collection is a symbol, my symbol, of life and love, made of links of varying importance, but always united, always tightknit. Full, solid interwoven bands of gold and leather. As colourful as life, as vibrant as love. Rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets and now, a watch. The collection is complete, and I am proud of it.”

ngénieur diplômé du très renommé ISIPCA (Institut Supérieur International du Parfum) à Versailles, Isabelle Burdel a créé la signature olfactive des produits d’accueil du Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez. “Je suis captivée par les odeurs qui m’entourent et passionnée, depuis toujours, par la création sous toutes ses formes” confie-t-elle.

Après plus de vingt ans d’expérience, la création d’un millier de parfums vendus dans le monde - elle a notamment été nez pour la célèbre maison Rochas - Isabelle a décidé, depuis quelques années, de mettre son savoir-faire au profit de particuliers et de proposer du surmesure dans son “Salon Privé” (le nom de sa société) basé à Cannes. “Lorsque Claudio Ceccherelli, le directeur général de l’hôtel, m’a demandé une fragrance, nous avons beaucoup discuté de ses attentes. Puis j’ai passé du temps à l’hôtel pour m’imprégner de son âme. Il s’agit d’un palace mythique !” Ensuite, elle a laissé parler son imagination et le scénario s’est imposé à elle : c’est le début de la soirée, un couple se prépare dans l’une des suites.

L’homme sort sur le balcon, admire la vue (la Méditerranée face à lui, l’Estérel à sa droite), il est rejoint par la femme... Il l’enlace et tous deux laissent leur regard partir loin, très loin...

C’est tout cela, et plus encore, que traduit “73 La Croisette”. L’été, la douceur du sable chaud ont également inspiré Isabelle Burdel pour composer sa formule inédite. Avec en note de tête la fraîcheur de la verveine, en notes de cœur le jasmin, le bois de rose, le vétiver et le cèdre, et en notes de fond le patchouli, l’ambre, le santal, le tabac et le ciste de Méditerranée.

Une senteur unique qui promet un beau moment d’évasion et de rêverie.

It was Isabelle Burdel, a graduate of the very famous ISIPCA (International Institute of Higher Studies in Perfume) in Versailles, who created the distinctive perfume of the hospitality products offered by the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez. “I’m captivated by the odours that surround me and have always been fascinated by creation in all its forms,” she confides.

After more than twenty years of experience, and the creation of a thousand perfumes that sold world-wide - she was the nose for the famous Rochas company, in particular - Isabelle decided, a few years ago, to put her expertise to the service of private individuals and offer made-tomeasure perfumes in her Salon Privé (the name of her company) based in Cannes. “When Claudio Ceccherelli, the hotel’s General Manager, asked me to create a scent, we discussed his expectations at length. Then I spent time in the hotel to capture an idea of the hotel’s soul. It is a legendary luxury hotel.” Next, she left things to her imagination and a scenario came to mind: it’s early evening and a couple are in one of the suites, preparing to go out. The man goes out onto the balcony to admire the view (the Mediterranean in front of him and the Estérel on his right), and is joined by the woman. He puts his arms around her and they both look far into the distance, very far... All that, and more, describes 73 La Croisette. Summer and soft, warm sand were also an inspiration for Isabelle Burdel when she was creating her new formula. The perfume has the freshness of verbena as its top note, middle notes of jasmine, rosewood, the vetiver and cedar, and its base notes are patchouli, amber, sandalwood, tobacco and Mediterranean rockrose. It’s a unique scent that promises the dreamy sensation of getting away from it all.

Marking such a significant event during the Football World Cup means it has every chance of turning into a ‘super fiesta’. In fact, ZPlage will be running on Brazil time and will have plenty of opportunities to score points with its busy programme of festivities. Accompanying it in this marvellous adventure will be the Taittinger Champagne company, which is FIFA’s official sponsor this year.

Football matches will be broadcast on a giant screen and there will also be a group of Brazilian musicians. There’ll be even more fun in store, too, with bottles of the Official World Cup 2014 Champagne to be won thanks to a World Cup prediction game! Finally, to make football and after-work get-togethers more enjoyable, tapas and tropical cocktails will be available between 6 pm and 11 pm. From 1st July to 31st August, Maggy Smiss, who has been our resident DJ for 3 years now, will get busy behind the Zplage turntables with her pop and electro funk repertoire. It’ll be a colourful summer of celebration with Znights dinners every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening and an exceptional programme of Super Shows: a Brazilian one (for the World Cup final) and also Bollywood, Cuban salsa, magic and aerial acrobatic shows, followed by a club atmosphere right up until the early hours. The Festival of Pyrotechnic Art, which lights up the Cannes night sky, has become a tradition, and the private beach of the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez will be joining in the event with its prestigious Firework Display Dinners (on 14th, 21st, and 29th July and 15th and 24th August). All these magical nights by the sea mean it’s sure to be an exciting summer.

Tradition oblige, le Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique embrase le ciel cannois et la plage privée du Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez s’associe à l’événement avec de prestigieux Dîners Feux d’Artifice (les 14, 21 et 29 juillet et les 15 et 24 août). Personne, parmi les privilégiés présents ce jour-là, n’a oublié le moment. Juchée sur des talons à la hauteur vertigineuse, glissée dans une robe noire dos nu, Julianne Moore hypnotise. Avec un naturel désarmant, elle avoue être nerveuse à l’idée d’être là pour L’Oréal Paris. Paradoxal pour celle qui, après plus de 50 longs métrages, n’est toujours pas blasée et rêve encore de rôles à explorer, de personnages auxquels donner vie, de risques à prendre en toute conscience. Lorsqu’on l’interroge justement sur le film qui lui a demandé la plus grande métamorphose beauté (coupe de cheveux, maquillage et look), elle répond sans hésiter : « “A single Man”, de Tom Ford. La métamorphose était stupéfiante tout au long du film. »

Havana, c’est elle

“Maps to the Stars”, le dernier Cronenberg, pointe du doigt - et sans concession - le système hollywoodien. Drame intense où cohabitent la corruption, la manipulation et la destruction (voire l’autodestruction), il réunit John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska et Julianne Moore. “Maps to the Stars”, the latest Cronenberg film, points an uncompromising finger at the Hollywood system. A dark drama on the world of corruption, manipulation and destruction (even self-destruction) starring John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska and Julianne Moore. She is Havana, the client of a psychotherapist and an actress who dreams of shooting a remake of the film that made her mother, who has been dead for some time now, famous. Torn between the mother figure that haunts her and her unhealthy desire, Havana ends up losing herself.

Julianne Moore demonstrates, once again, the sheer breadth of her talent. She does not play a role, she becomes it. Daughter of a military judge and a social worker, she discovered her passion for drama at an early age. She enrolled in the Boston School of the Performing Arts, but was slow to gain recognition and struggled at in the beginning. Her first roles were in soap operas, which she in no way regrets, to the point of explaining that they taught her how to work, to show up on the set each day and learn responsibility.

She finally got her first film break through Robert Altman, who saw her on stage in Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” and gave her a role in “Short Cuts”. The roles kept coming: “Vanya on 42nd Street” by Louis Malle, “Safe” and “Far from Heaven” by Todd Haynes, “The Big Lebowski” by the Coen Brothers, “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia” by Paul Thomas Anderson, “A Single Man”

by Tom Ford. She gave a stunning, true-to-life portrayal of Sarah Palin in “Game Change”, a film that the American female politician refused to watch... Riding the wave of her success, she alternates between art house films and blockbusters, bringing her rather mysterious aura to each of her roles. As she explains in a few words: «What I enjoy is simply being an actress.»

And she acts. Same goes for L’Oréal Paris: «I know that L’Oréal likes interesting women, who are appreciated for what they radiate, a kind of authenticity and truth, and not just for their perfect looks. So many values I recognize in myself.» Elementary, my dear Julianne!

omment l’histoire a-t-elle commencé ?

how did the story begin?

At the beginning of the 1970s, a 23-year-old copy writer at a New York advertising agency, Ilon Specht, was assigned the mission nobody wanted: Create THE campaign to establish Préférence by L’Oreal as the new benchmark haircolor on the American market, which was then dominated by Clairol with its iconic tagline, “Does She or Doesn’t She?” (See Malcolm Gladwell’s well-known article, True Colors, in the March 22, 1999 issue of The New Yorker.)

Mission impossible. The planned comparative ad based on scientific studies showing the technological superiority of L’Oreal’s Préférence over Clairol’s Nice ‘n Easy was banned because the research in question had not been conducted in the United States. Panic ensued. What were they going to do? The idea: break sharply with the existing codes portraying women as silent objects. At best, as subjects that could barely think for themselves, subjugated by esthetic standards set by men. Be pretty, be good and be quiet. It was the creative anger, the

possible. Près de quarante ans plus tard, la “ligne” rédigée par Ilon Specht pour conclure cette fameuse pub n’a pas pris une ride : “Préférence by L’Oréal is the most expensive, but you can see it’s worth it. So am I.”. “It’s worth it. So am I.”,“Cela le vaut bien. Moi aussi.”

S’agissait-il d’une véritable rupture ?

Le message

Pasal Beucler : La rupture était visionnaire ! Sur le fond tout d’abord, L’Oréal pose une équation inédite : ce n’est pas par convenance ou par conformisme social qu’une femme choisit Préférence, c’est parce que L’Oréal fait la différence, par la performance de sa technologie. Dès lors, ce n’est pas pour plaire aux autres, ni rentrer dans le moule que je choisis le meilleur produit pour mes cheveux, et pour moi. C’est pour me plaire à moi, me sentir bien. L’Oréal, c’est le plus beau des soins pour moi, celui qui me rend plus sûre de moi, donc plus heureuse. Ce n’était pas encore dans l’air du temps, mais on aurait pu dire, déjà, “Mon L’Oréal”.

Vient ensuite la forme. Le message de L’Oréal bouleverse les codes, publicitairement et donc culturellement, dans une Amérique assez conservatrice s’agissant du statut de la femme. En effet, à la femme de Clairol, silencieuse et “parlée” en voix-off masculine (eh oui..), se pose en s’opposant bruyamment la femme de L’Oréal qui prend la parole, donc le de L’Oréal pouvoir.

Was it a true break with the past?

It was a visionary break with the past! First, the deeper meaning. L’Oreal put forward a brand new way of thinking: A woman doesn’t choose Préférence to conform to social conventions and accepted norms (see Clairol…), she chooses Préférence because L’Oreal is truly different, in terms of both performance and technology. It’s no longer to please others or to be like everyone else that I choose the product that’s best for hair. I’m doing it because it makes me happy and makes me feel good about myself.

L’Oreal means the best haircare for me, the products that increase my self-confidence, and therefore make me happier. Although the “my” phraseology used so often today was not yet current, one could have already spoken in terms of “My L’Oreal.”

Then, the form it took. L’Oreal’s message shattered the codes of advertising, and by extension cultural codes, in an America that held rather conservative views of a

woman’s proper role in society. The silent, voiceless Clairol woman, with only a male voice-over (!) stood in noisy opposition to the L’Oreal woman with a voice of her own, therefore with her own power.

It was a pretty bold move, wasn’t it?

They took a risky bet and they won, spectacularly. So it’s easy to understand why L’Oreal Paris is now celebrating this key moment in its history!

For nearly 40 years, the brand promise has remained on a continuum, always about the added value the product creates for people.

If self-esteem is indeed that very personal, internal attitude that allows a woman to say to herself that she has Freida Pinto value, that she’s “worth it”, that she’s unique and that she’s important, especially in her own eyes, then L’Oreal is indisputably THE brand of self-esteem. With, as a bonus, the worldwide and unparalleled fame, appeal and durability of the words, “Because I’m worth it.”

Comment ne pas comprendre que L’Oréal Paris célèbre aujourd’hui ce moment fondateur ! Depuis bientôt quarante ans, la promesse de la marque est, de fait, un continuum, s’agissant du rapport à la valeur que le produit crée pour la personne.

Si l’estime de soi est bien cette attitude intime, et intérieure, qui consiste à pouvoir se dire qu’on a de la valeur, qu’on est singulier, et important, d’abord à ses propres yeux, alors L’Oréal est sans conteste “LA” marque de l’estime de soi.

Avec, à la clé une notoriété, un agrément et une longévité sans pareils pour “Because I’m worth it”, partout dans le monde.

Is change still the operative word for the brand?

What we might call the grammar of value of L’Oreal’s tagline has evolved over the years, from the “I” of the 70s to the “you” of the 90s to the “we” of the final years of the last decade. The “I” was the “I” spoken by a woman taking full control of her life during the era of the women’s liberation movement. The use of “you” signaled a change toward a context where women were enjoined to act and to identify with certain ideals, a context where the brand’s celebrity spokeswomen began to play a dominant role.

The original, self-proclaimed “me” was replaced by a unifying “me, too”, with, no doubt, an element of greater conformity as well. The more recent and more hesitant “we” would appear to aim at greater inclusiveness, a greater emphasis on community, which clearly speaks to a deep-seated contemporary aspiration.

Pascal Beucler : Ce que l’on pourrait appeler la grammaire de la valeur de la signature de L’Oréal a évolué, au fil des années, du “Je” originel des années 70 au “Vous” de la fin des années 90 puis au “Nous” de la fin des années 2000. Celle qui n’est pas encore Coco déteste cordialement la mode féminine de l’époque, ses corsets, dentelles et autres froufrous. Elle dessine donc une robe d’une simplicité désarmante, avec des manches longues, qui s’arrête au genou et, suprême culot, elle opte pour du noir. La coupe est parfaite, mais pour la société bien-pensante elle va à l’encontre de ce qui se fait alors. Tollé général ! On crie au scandale. Sauf outre-Atlantique, où les critiques du magazine Vogue décèlent dans cet obscur objet féminin l’uniforme de la femme moderne. Ils la baptisent immédiatement “la Ford de Chanel”, en référence au fleuron de l’automobile US dont le slogan était alors : « You can choose the colour of your car if it is black » (Vous pouvez choisir la couleur de votre voiture si c’est noir).

They immediately baptised it the Ford of Chanel, making a reference to that jewel of the US automobile industry, which had as its slogan: “You can choose the colour of your car as long as it’s black.”

Celle de la chanteuse qui se produit plusieurs soirs par semaine dans des restaurants à Cannes et Mougins, et des soirées privées. « J’ai commencé les cours de chant à 10 ans, puis j’ai chanté au Club Med et j’ai participé deux fois à l’émission de Nagui, “N’oubliez pas les paroles”. » Son répertoire très large - variété française et internationale - lui permet de toucher un vaste public. Mélissa chante Piaf, Shakira, Rihanna, Christophe Maé... avec un égal bonheur. Ses heures de bureau terminées, elle quitte son tailleur strict et opère sa transformation : tenue de scène, maquillage étudié... en quelques minutes, elle est la professionnelle qui anime avec talent les soirées de Cannes et de la région. Pro jusqu’au bout des ongles, elle prévoit tout et surtout les incidents techniques qui pourraient gâcher sa prestation (ses meilleurs alliés restant son ordinateur, ses baffles et son micro).

Se lancera-t-elle dans le monde du show-biz ? «Pour le moment non, j’aime mon travail au Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez et j’ai besoin d’avoir une vie stable. Mais on ne sait pas ce que l’avenir me réserve. »

At work, Mélissa is a voice. The voice that the hotel guests hear when they phone to make a reservation. And then out of hours Mélissa is also a voice. The voice of a singer which can be heard several evenings a week in the restaurants of Cannes and Mougins and at private parties. “I started taking singing lessons when I was 10, then I sang at Club Med and I did the Nagui programme “N’oubliez pas les paroles” [Don’t forget the words] twice.” She has a large repertoire of both French and international pop music, which allows her to reach a wide audience. Mélissa sings songs made famous by Piaf, Shakira, Rihanna or Christophe Mahé, with the same enthusiasm for each of them. Once she’s finished at work for the day, she leaves behind her plain suit, slips into her stage costume and carefully puts on her make-up: her transformation is complete. In just a few minutes she is the professional singer who brings parties in and around Cannes to life with her talent.

A pro down to her very fingertips, she plans for every eventuality, to avoid in particular any technical hitches that could spoil her performance (her best allies are her computer, speakers and microphone). So is she going to try and break into showbiz? “No, I like working at the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez and I need to have a stable way of life. Singing is an added bonus, not my goal.”

Entré au Martinez en 2003, il occupe, depuis 2010, le poste de DRH (Directeur des ressources humaines) de l’hôtel et, parallèlement, celui de commissaire de piste à l’Automobile Club de Monaco. Son intérêt pour les bolides ne date pas d’hier. Enfant, il regardait les grands prix de Formule 1 à la télévision avec son père et allait, chaque année, vivre la course en direct à Monaco. C’est un collègue de sa mère, commissaire lui-même, qui l’a parrainé pour réaliser son rêve de gosse. Entré à l’Automobile Club de Monaco en 1999, après avoir suivi les journées de formation et tests d’aptitude, Stéphane franchit un à un tous les échelons et en 2011, il devient chef de poste. Ce qui signifie que, l’espace de 4 jours, il encadre 10 commissaires. Il participe également, chronomètre en main, aux rallyes organisés par l’ACM : le Rallye de Monte-Carlo, le Rallye Historique, celui des Energies Nouvelles (le dernier s’est déroulé en mars 2014)... Il part aussi à l’étranger, comme détaché du club monégasque, toujours vêtu de sa combinaison orange. Et il ne manque pas de faire un parallèle entre son métier et sa passion. « Le Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez et l’Automobile Club de Monaco ont en commun une recherche permanente de l’excellence et une image très haut de gamme, reconnue à l’international. Autre parallèle, intéressant : Le Martinez a été construit en 1929 et le premier Grand Prix de Monaco a eu lieu en... 1929 ! » Depuis peu, Stéphane Carrière a intégré, en tant que stagiaire, le commandement du corps des commissaires. Le voilà donc en course pour de futures responsabilités.

Stéphane Carrière is a trained lawyer and a passionate Formula 1 fan. Having joined the Martinez in 2003, he has been the hotel’s HR Director since 2010, while also being a race marshal at the Automobile Club of Monaco. His interest in racing cars did not just appear overnight. As a child he used to watch the Formula 1 Grands Prix on the television with his father and went every year to watch the race live in Monaco. It was one of his mother’s colleagues, a marshal himself, who supported him in realising his childhood dream. He joined the Automobile Club of Monaco in 1999 and, having completed the training days and aptitude tests, Stéphane gradually rose up through the ranks to become corner captain in 2011. This means that, for four days, he will supervise 10 marshals. With his stopwatch in hand, he is also involved in the rallies organised by the ACM, such as the Monte-Carlo Rally, the Historic Rally, and the New Energies Rally (which last took place in March 2014). He also travels abroad on temporary assignments from the ACM, always wearing his orange overalls. And for him there is a clear similarity between his job and his hobby. “The Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez and the Automobile Club of Monaco share a constant pursuit of excellence and both have a very high-end image which is recognised all around the world. Another parallel between the two is that the Martinez was built in 1929, the very year that the first Monaco Grand Prix was run.” In a short space of time, Stéphane Carrière has also joined the Marshal Corps Executive. So he’s well on track for greater responsibility in the future.

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the United Arab Emirates, taking up about 80% of the country’s total area. So, we won’t be satisfied with simply admiring from our terrace the sleek, audacious lines of the buildings that make up the majestic skyline, or shopping in the dozen or so airconditioned shopping centres that have sprung up like mushrooms after a (rare) shower.

It would be euphemistic to write that tradition and modernity jostle against one another in this small territory that’s gone, in less than fifty years, from a desert populated by nomads to a futuristic city. And not without a certain penchant for excess, just like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which houses, beneath its 80 domes, a thousand columns, 24-carat gold-plated chandeliers, and the biggest hand-woven carpet in the world. It’s an architectural wonder with enough space for a congregation of 40,000.

Abu Dhabi, an open and tolerant city, is a small paradise for children, who’ll love sliding down the toboggans and rapids of Yas Waterworld, learning to wakeboard in complete safety, enjoying high-speed thrills on the Formula Rossa roller coaster and in the (red) cars of Ferrari World, the biggest covered attraction park in the world.

The size and variety of the emirate’s landscapes are an invitation to leave the city and make an incursion further inland. You can head west towards the region of Al Gharbia and Liwa, the historic oasis town that marks the beginning of Rub Al Khali, the biggest sand desert in the world. The dunes that trace an ochre swell far into the horizon culminate at Moreeb Hill, a mass of sand that’s 300 metres high. At the Al Ain oasis, a former stopover for caravans travelling to Oman, you’ll be captivated by

the lively camel and cattle markets, the last of their kind in the Emirates. Before returning to the city, you should make one last stop at the Falcon Hospital. This sacred bird is cared for and pampered in this place, which welcomes visitors and introduces them to falconry, a local passion.

Then back to the city for a trip to the islands. There are about 200, all scattered across the blue waters of the Persian Gulf close to the city. Most are just sand, and are good for picnicking and swimming. You can easily reach them in a few minutes on board shuttles that depart from the Al Bateen marina. Other islands deserve more exploration. This is the case of Al Futaisi. Ten minutes south of Abu Dhabi, this private island belonging to a local millionaire is home to the life-size replica of an authentic desert fort and plant life that invites you to take an enjoyable walk. In the city or in the countryside, Abu Dhabi remains an attractive destination with all the charms of the Middle East – charms of the past and the future.

Sur la Côte d’Azur, plus d’un chemin - de traverse - mène vers les bonheurs de l’art. Echappées belles.

On the French Riviera, there’s more than one shortcut leading to the pleasures of art. Here are a few great escapes.

There are, of course, the big institutions such as the iconic Matisse, Chagall, Picasso and Léger museums.

Places without which the Riviera scenery would not be what it is - a fabulous Eldorado of 20th century art.

But, precisely because of the multitude of its magnetic fields, you might also want to look at this fertile territory from another angle. Just as the title of a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, A Garden of Forking Paths, suggests. Things open up, then, onto a web of contemporary works of art that are as one with the horizons of cities or set nature ablaze, and with creative explorations far from the main roads of signposted art.

The beginning of our journey bears the name Nomad; this monumental sculpture by Jaume Plensa stands on the terrace of the Saint-Jaume bastion (the name is purely coincidental), in the harbour of Antibes. A fine lace of metallic letters that intermingle with the blue of the sky, it seems to have been put there to keep a dream-like watch.

Since it is hollow, the ripple of its openwork curves can be viewed from inside. A Golgotha of guipure lace, its contemplation is both exhilarating and mystical! The old harbour of Cannes, on quai Saint-Pierre, also has a trophy,

by Steph Cop this time. Imposing in size with a height of five metres and a weight of seven tons, ARO (which can be admired until mid-July) was cut from hundred-year-old oak trees, which had fallen in the forests of the Morvan region.

Land art

Not very far from there, on one of the Lérins islands, Sainte-Marguerite, an exhibition entitled Between Earth and Sea, is based on age-old combinations that bring the world back to its essential dimensions. Organized by the municipality of Cannes within the framework of its Second International Land Art Meeting, the event first invited 15 artists to the island to create works of art exclusively from materials they could find on-site. Works made in this way out of rocks, tree trunks and branches were placed around

De port en port

Le point de départ de notre périple s’appelle “Nomade” ; la monumentale sculpture de Jaume Plensa est installée sur la terrasse du bastion Saint-Jaume (hasard des noms), sur le port d’Antibes. Faite d’une dentelle de lettrages métalliques entrelacés au bleu du ciel, elle semble posée là, en vigie rêveuse. L’œuvre étant creuse, on peut voir ses galbes ajourés onduler de l’intérieur. Un Golgotha de guipures, une contemplation euphorisante et mystique !

Le Vieux-Port de Cannes, sur le quai Saint-Pierre, a aussi son trophée, signé Steph Cop. Avec ses volumes imposants - cinq mètres de hauteur pour sept tonnes à la pesée -, “ARO” (que l’on peut admirer jusqu’à la mi-juillet) a été taillé dans des chênes centenaires, tombés dans les forêts du Morvan.

Côté land art

Pas très loin de là, sur l’une des Îles de Lérins - SainteMarguerite, l’exposition “Entre terre et mer” se module sur ces combinaisons immémoriales où le monde est ramené à ses dimensions essentielles. Organisée par la ville de Cannes dans le cadre de sa Deuxième Rencontre internationale de Land Art, l’événement a invité en amont quinze artistes à faire acte de création, sur l’île, uniquement à partir de matériaux trouvés sur place. Pierres, troncs d’arbres, branches, les œuvres ainsi réalisées ont été

placées autour de l’étang du Batéguier, dans l’écrin de la réserve naturelle de l’île. À découvrir jusqu’au 31 août 2014. Autre fusion art et environnement, cette fois du côté de l’Arboretum Marcel Kroënlein, un site de forêts et de chemins sur quinze hectares autour du village de Roure, dans les Alpes-Maritimes. Labellisé “jardin remarquable”, l’Arboretum ne se contente pas d’être un conservatoire paysager grandeur nature. C’est aussi un espace des quatre saisons, où l’on découvre des pièces tout le long des sentiers. Exposées aux intempéries, vivantes et évolutives, quasi organiques parfois, elles ont chacune une histoire en résonance avec l’arbre, la roche ou le point de vue auprès duquel elles se trouvent. Le collectif de créateurs no-made signe la plupart de ces œuvres et en présente des nouvelles, au fil des mois. La dernière en date, “Dans les arbres”, est à voir jusqu’au 30 septembre.

the Batéguier pond, against the setting of the island’s natural reserve. The exhibition is open until 31st August 2014. Another fusion of art and the environment is the Arboretum Marcel Kroenlein, 15 hectares of forests and paths around the village of Roure in the Alpes-Maritimes.

Listed as a Remarkable Garden, the Arboretum is not content to simply be a life-sized protected landscape. It’s also a place for all seasons, in which works of art are to be found all along its paths. Exposed to the weather, living and evolving, almost organic sometimes, each tells its own story, in resonance with the tree, rock or viewpoint they find themselves next to. The artists’ collective No-made has designed most of these works and continues to present new ones as the months pass by. The latest, In the Trees, can be seen until 30th September.

The highlight of this musical score is to be found on Place Masséna, in the form of seven sculptures levitated on high steel stems: Conversation in Nice, by Jaume Plensa. When darkness comes, each one of them reflects changing colours through a luminous prism. Nice is not about to stop deploying in its public areas a palette of works that are as heart-warming as they are eclectic, from the Arch

Nice, réservoir de formes et de couleurs à ciel ouvert, offre, dans le sillage de son tramway, toute une constellation d’œuvres d’art ; celles-ci accompagnent son tracé à travers les rues et les quartiers de la ville.

Sélectionnés par un jury d’experts, c’est un aréopage d’artistes de premier plan que l’on retrouve dans cette mouvance pour des transports collectifs et esthétiques.

Parmi ceux-ci, Ange Leccia et son Disque solaire à la station comte de Falicon, Jean-Michel Othoniel et son mobilier urbain en perles de verre au square Doyen Lépine... En point d’orgue de cette partition, sur la place Masséna, les sept sculptures en lévitation sur leurs hautes tiges d’acier, “Conversation à Nice”, signées Jaume Plensa. Le soir tombé, chacune d’elles miroite via un prisme lumineux de couleurs changeantes. Nice n’en finit pas de déployer dans son espace public une palette d’œuvres aussi réjouissantes qu’éclectiques, de l’arche de Bernar Venet, dans le jardin Albert 1er, au parvis du MAMAC avec sa rutilante fontaine de Niki de Saint Phalle – placée face à un mobile de Calder - et jusqu’à la « Tête carrée » de Sacha Sosno.

Dans le cadre de l’International Luxury Travel Market, le Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez a accueilli, en décembre dernier, un dîner de gala Hyatt réunissant les grands chefs de Paris, Milan et Cannes. Retour sur une partition sans fausse note.

In December, as part of the International Luxury Travel Market event, the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez hosted a Hyatt gala dinner that brought together top chefs from Paris, Milan and Cannes. Let’s look back on a perfect harmony of talents.

They are used to working solo, at the head of their respective teams. But on 4th December last year, they brought their talents together to compose a gala dinner entitled “Les Etoiles” (Stars), the byword of which was excellence. “It’s an interesting initiative because it gives us the chance to meet up and get to know one another better. From that point, we begin to like and respect one another” noted Christian Sinicropi, the chef with two stars from the restaurant of the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez. To make up the trio for this exceptional evening, there was another Frenchman, Jean-François Rouquette (from the Pur restaurant of the Park Hyatt Paris Vendôme, 1 star) and the Italian Andrea Aprea (from the Vun restaurant of the Park Hyatt Milan, 1 star). The

Partant de là, nous pouvons nous apprécier et nous respecter » note Christian Sinicropi, le chef doublement étoilé de la table du Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez. Pour composer le trio de cette soirée exceptionnelle, un autre Français, JeanFrançois Rouquette (restaurant Pur’, Park Hyatt Paris Vendôme, 1*) et l’Italien Andrea Aprea (restaurant Vun, Park Hyatt Milan, 1*). To bring four chefs together is to dare an interface between four cuisines.” His comments were corroborated by his elder: “This evening, it’s the young Hyatt family that’s met up to show its expertise. Andrea and I are playing away but Christian Sinicropi is an excellent host!”

Un chef, un plat

One chef, one dish

Après concertation et réflexion, le chef italien de la formation a réalisé l’entrée (une salade Caprese sucrée et salée), Jean-François Rouquette a proposé des coquilles Saint-Jacques rôties aux fèves de cacao, citrons confits chaux jus moussé, coriandre, feuilles de navet et chou romanesco. Quant au chef de La Palme d’Or, il a séduit les convives avec son figatelli et agneau confit 48h de Monsieur Greffeuille de l’Aveyron. « On ferme les yeux et on se retrouve dans le sud de la France. » Capable d’exprimer leur créativité avec tous les produits, ces chefs ont très logiquement leur préférence. Les Saint-Jacques pour Jean-François Rouquette, « parce qu’elles “collent” bien à ma cuisine. Je prépare des plats de globe-trotter, qui construisent des passerelles vers l’étranger. » Mais il plébiscite également les petits pois, les fèves, le chou rave et le pigeonneau. « En fait, j’aime partager mes émotions. Ma base reste classique, ensuite, je raconte une histoire autour d’un plat. » Pour Christian Sinicropi, le bonheur c’est «travailler les produits de saison et partir sur une recherche autour de cette matière première.

Quand une saison se termine, j’attends avec impatience la suivante. Le renouvellement me motive et m’inspire.»

Andrea Aprea, lui, insiste sur deux points : le goût et l’esthétique. Les produits ne sont que les acteurs qu’il va mettre en scène : « 80% de mes recettes sont basées sur une combinaison de goûts. C’est la philosophie même de ma cuisine. » La note sucrée finale de la soirée a été apportée par Julien Ochando, le chef pâtissier du Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez, avec son Citron de Menton, une déclinaison tout en nuances du fruit symbolique de la ville frontalière.

After consultation and reflection, the group’s Italian chef produced the starter (a sweet and sour mozzarella and tomato salad), and Jean-François Rouquette offered roast scallops with crushed cocoa beans, a foamy preserved lemon sauce, coriander, turnips and Romanesco cauliflower. As for La Palme d’Or’s chef, he charmed guests with his figatelli sausage and lamb from the Greffeuille company in Aveyron, which he’d slow-cooked for 48 hours. “You close your eyes and you’re in the south of France.” Able to express their creativity with any products, these chefs have their preferences, and not without reason. Jean-François Rouquette uses scallops “Because they go well with my cuisine. I prepare globetrotter dishes that build bridges to foreign countries.” But he likes peas, broad beans, kohlrabi and young pigeon equally. “Actually, I like to share my emotions. I start from a classic base, and then I tell a story through a dish.” For Christian Sinicropi, happiness is “Working with seasonal products and going on an exploration around this raw material. When one season comes to an end, I’m impatient for the next one. Renewal motivates and inspires me.” As for Andrea Aprea, he insists on two points: flavour and aesthetics. The products are just actors he stage directs: “80% of my recipes are based on a combination of flavours. That’s the philosophy behind my cuisine.” The sweet note to round off the evening was provided by Julian Ochando, the head pastry cook of the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez, with his Menton Lemons, a nuanced presentation of the border town’s symbolic fruit.

Amateur éclairé et lui-même artiste, le chef étoilé revient sur quelques-unes de ses rencontres majeures, autour… de l’art bien sûr.

An enlightened enthusiast and also an artist himself, this Michelin-starred chef tells us about some of his important encounters, relating to … art, of course.

Together with Patrick Moya, he built the Martinez and its virtual kitchen. As well as a solid friendship, there is enormous complicity between the two men. “We’re on the same wavelength”, confides Christian Sinicropi. “Patrick is a humble, sensitive and extremely kind person. He has unbelievable energy and is always setting himself challenges. He’s all about ‘being’.” The last thing they worked on together was a plate tattooed by Moya, which was a friendly nod to the great Cocteau. And its name?

“Moya Sinicropi Version 3.”

More recently, the chef’s artistic passion for Steph Cop dates back to 2011. Steph Cop is the sculptor of the Wooden Aros, these figures carved out of different species

of trees that seem to have escaped from the trees they originated from. “With him, nothing is planned, we work blow by blow, depending on how we feel.” From their intellectual tribulations, a plate was born that’s atypical … as always.

“I met Sylvie Bourgeois during a Film Festival and we immediately hit it off. She’s dynamic and cheerful; I wanted to share her stories.” The novelist, who wrote– amongst others - Sophie à Cannes, in 2011, offers a dynamic, fun version of the human comedy, an approach that Christian Sinicropi found irresistible. “She doesn’t take herself seriously.” That’s one reason that’s big enough for him to start imagining working with her on something that refers to the book.

“Art is all about encounters,” the chef assures us. In his case, wouldn’t the encounters also be all about art? He got to know Annick Delarue, a painter, through some of his friends. There was an exchange of ideas, affinities, and, to cement the good feeling between them, a plate they named Human Wave.

Steph Cop date de 2011. Steph Cop, c’est le sculpteur des Wooden ARO, ces personnages taillés dans différentes essences qui semblent se libérer des arbres dont ils sont issus. « Avec lui, rien n’est planifié, nous travaillons au coup par coup, selon nos envies. » De leurs tribulations intellectuelles est née une assiette, atypique… comme toujours. « Sylvie Bourgeois, je l’ai rencontrée pendant un Festival du Film et le courant est immédiatement passé. Elle est dynamique et joyeuse ; j’ai voulu partager ses anecdotes. » La romancière, auteure – entre autres - de “Sophie à Cannes”, en 2011, donne dans la comédie humaine mais version tonique et ludique, une approche qui a séduit Christian Sinicropi. « Elle ne se prend pas au sérieux. » Une raison majeure et suffisante pour imaginer avec elle un support qui fait référence au livre. « L’art est une histoire de rencontres » assure le chef.

C’est un conseiller relationnel qui offre au décideur l’occasion de rompre avec sa solitude et son isolement. What is a personal advisor? “The vocation of the personal advisor is to allow one’s client to express verbally what worries him. He is a relational advisor who offers the business leader the opportunity to break-out of his loneliness and his isolation. The personal advisor is a professional friend who guarantees absolute confidentiality. The contract defines the whole of the relationship, the limits, the legal framework. All is clearly explained from the beginning.”

Quelle est la formation et le profil d’un conseiller personnel ? “ Il est issu de l’entreprise et a suivi un travail de développement personnel ou une formation en ressources humaines ou en communication relationnelle. Il connaît l’art de la reformulation qui permet au client de verbaliser. Au-delà d’un parcours professionnel réussi, la dimension humaine est toujours privilégiée pour intégrer le cabinet. C’est surtout une question de personnalité.

Actuellement, j’ai 8 conseillers qui interviennent en mission. C’est le client qui choisit son conseiller. C’est pour cela que nous fournissons des fiches avec la biographie détaillée. Ensuite, il y a un entretien avec le conseiller personnel pour valider le choix. Il faut que le courant passe. Le client achète un package d’heures d’accompagnement et les utilise au fur et à mesure de ses besoins. Avec le package d’heures, il peut choisir différents conseillers suivant les situations : négociation d’affaires ou partie de golf ou séance shopping…”

What is the training and the profile of a personal advisor? “He comes from a corporate background, and has taken-up personal development work or training in human resources or relational communication. He knows the art of reformulation which allows the client to express himself verbally. Beyond a successful career path, the human aspect is always favoured when joining the firm. It is above all a question of personality. Currently, I have 8 advisors who are out on assignments. It is the client who chooses his advisor. That is why we provide folders with a detailed biography. Then, there is a meeting with the personal advisor to confirm the choice. It is necessary for both to connect. The client buys a package of hours of support and uses them progressively according to need. With the package of hours, he may choose various advisors according to the situation: business negotiation or game of golf or a shopping session…”

I have a lot of admiration for him and I would have been delighted to meet him.” The same goes for Dali and Jean Marais, for Hopper, Monet, Giacometti and Camille Claudel. “I don’t look for anything in particular but all of them, in one way or another, are part of my world. If they were alive today, I’m sure I could have worked with them.” A fan of music, he also enjoys philosophy, which he calls “The art of analysing your own ideas and those of others” and, of course, films. Among his favourites are Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and Jane Campion.

Il avait plusieurs cordes à son arc, œuvrait dans des domaines très différents, réussissait dans tous et approfondissait tout. It would appear to already be in the air. We’ll keep an eye on that then… Also to be looked out for is a project involving the chef, Jean-Claude Ellena, the well-known perfume creator, and the visual artist, Jean-Claude Meynard. Perfume, perfume bottle and recipe will be the main ingredients of this collaboration between three strong personalities. The artistic future of Christian Sinicropi seems secure!

Impertinent et décalé, Ben personnifie l’artiste qui dit tout haut ce que d’aucun pense tout bas. Un culot qui n’est pas pour déplaire à Christian Sinicropi. Une collaboration entre ces deux artistes ne serait-elle pas à l’ordre du jour ? Il semblerait qu’elle est déjà dans l’air. À suivre donc… À suivre aussi, un projet impliquant le chef, Jean-Claude Ellena - le nez bien connu - ainsi que le peintre et plasticien Jean-Claude Meynard. Parfum, flacon, recette restent les principaux ingrédients de la collaboration entre trois fortes personnalités. L’avenir artistique de Christian Sinicropi semble assuré !
