« Pour retrouver sa jeunesse, il n’y a qu’à recommencer ses folies », déclarait Oscar Wilde, habitué en son temps du café de la Paix. Une leçon que l’InterContinental Paris Le Grand a décidé de prendre au pied de la lettre en entamant cette année une nouvelle cure de jouvence.

Comme un écho au passé, ces rénovations, qui visent à distiller quelques touches de modernité pour sublimer l’ADN historique des lieux, interviennent au moment où la Ville-Lumière, toujours aussi palpitante, connaît d’importantes transformations.

Un clin d’œil à l’année 1862 qui voyait apparaître ce superbe colosse d’élégance place de l’Opéra, dans un Paris alors en pleine « haussmannisation ». La capitale française et l’emblématique hôtel de la rue Scribe, deux écrins d’histoire, de culture et d’art de vivre à la française, aux destins croisés.

Un vent de fraîcheur soufflera également sur nos cartes sucrées avec l’arrivée de la jeune et talentueuse nouvelle chef pâtissière Sophie de Bernardi, ainsi que sous la verrière où vous pourrez profiter de l’ambiance piano-bar toutes les fins de semaine. Nous vous invitons également à venir profiter, chaque dimanche, de notre grand brunch. Pour le reste, absolument rien ne change : c’est dans une atmosphère chaleureuse.

«To get back one’s youth, one has merely to repeat one’s follies», declared the great Oscar Wilde, once a regular of Café de la Paix: a lesson the InterContinental Paris Le Grand has decided to take at face value by treating our historic hotel to a rejuvenating beauty cure sprinkled with contemporary touches in 2018. And it just so happens that the City of Light, as palpitating as ever, is undergoing some major transformations too...

The InterContinental Paris Le Grand rose out of the ground like a magnificent giant on Place de l’Opéra in 1862, at a time when Haussmannian buildings were springing up everywhere in Paris. And we have been proud to share the French capital’s destiny ever since. So, as a fellow cradle of history, culture and French lifestyle, we are proud to be experiencing a makeover alongside the rest of Paris too.

A wind of change will also be blowing on our dessert menus, with the arrival of the young and talented new Pastry Chef Sophie de Bernardi, while the Verrière will be the venue for cosy piano bar evenings under our stunning glass canopy from Thursday to Saturday ever week. Discrètement, cet emblématique établissement de la place de l’Opéra opère sa mue, comme inexorablement lié, depuis plus de 150 ans, aux mutations de son écrin qu’est la Ville-Lumière. Pour cela, notre hôtel entreprendra donc des rénovations, et ce à partir de la mi-janvier, dans le but de vous accueillir dans des conditions encore plus prestigieuses.

Après l’obtention d’une cinquième étoile, cette transformation viendra améliorer les prestations de notre établissement pour confirmer notre position privilégiée dans l’hôtellerie de luxe. Le projet ? Sublimer nos chambres, ainsi que les parties communes et les restaurants, en conservant l’état d’esprit du Grand Hôtel : un établissement mythique, valorisant l’héritage du passé tout en étant tourné vers l’avenir. Ainsi, le célèbre architecte Pierre-Yves Rochon, chargé d’orchestrer cette opération, conserverat-il le style Second Empire qui fait toute la singularité de ces lieux, tout en ajoutant à ce somptueux décor des notes résolument modernes. Car c’est bien ce qu’est le Grand Hôtel depuis sa création en 1862 dans le nouveau Paris alors dessiné par le baron Haussmann : un colosse de modernité et d’élégance.

Débutant à partir de la mi-janvier, ce projet s’effectuera en deux phases majeures, durant lesquelles l’hôtel restera ouvert. Bien sûr, nous mettrons tout en œuvre pour que votre séjour ne souffre pas de ces rénovations, ceci en nous engageant d’une part à ce que les zones en cours de modification soient inaccessibles depuis l’hôtel, mais également en ne réalisant les travaux qu’en journée et pendant la semaine.

Discretely, this iconic establishment on the Place de l’Opera has been shedding its skin, inexorably linked for more than 150 years to the transformation of its setting, the City of Lights. To this end, beginning in mid-January, our hotel will move forward with a programme of renovations for the purpose of accommodating you in even more prestigious conditions.

After earning a fifth star, this transformation will further improve the services of our establishment and confirm our privileged position in the luxury hotel sector. The project? Further refining our rooms, as well as common areas and restaurants, retaining the Le Grand spirit: a legendary establishment, enhancing its historical legacy while looking to the future. Hence, famous architect PierreYves Rochon, responsible for directing the operation, will retain the Second Empire style that makes all the spaces so unique, while adding some resolutely modern notes to the already sumptuous decor. As that’s what Le Grand Hôtel has been since it was created in 1862 in the new Paris planned by Baron Haussmann: a colossus of modernity and elegance.

Starting in mid-January, this project will be completed in two major phases, during which the hotel will remain open.

Dans la continuité des rénovations déjà opérées avant l’obtention d’une cinquième étoile, l’InterContinental Paris Le Grand entame une nouvelle métamorphose. Une fois n’est pas coutume, c’est à nouveau l’architecte Pierre-Yves Rochon et son cabinet éponyme qui seront aux commandes.

Following on from its refurbishment prior to obtaining a fifth star, the InterContinental Paris Le Grand is getting ready for a brand new makeover. And architect Pierre-Yves Rochon and his firm of the same name are back to conduct the performance. xxxx / 14

rchitecte français d’envergure internationale, Pierre-Yves Rochon est un faiseur d’étoiles et de palaces : spécialisées dans l’hôtellerie de luxe, ses équipes ont pu accompagner les plus beaux établissements vers l’obtention de prix prestigieux. Figurent notamment parmi ses œuvres la rénovation du Peninsula à Shanghai, du Monte-Carlo Bay Resort SBM ou encore du Grand Hôtel du CapFerrat… C’est donc tout naturellement que l’InterContinental Paris Le Grand a confié à son savoir-faire d’excellence les rénovations entamées depuis 2002. À l’aube d’une nouvelle transformation, Claire Mabon, designer principale au sein de son cabinet de Paris, a accepté de nous en dire un peu plus sur ces futurs travaux.

UNE TRANSFORMATION EN DEUX-TEMPS

Débutant dès janvier 2018, les travaux seront réalisés en deux étapes, et ce afin de rester tout à fait compatibles avec le fonctionnement de l’hôtel et la sérénité de ses hôtes, car l’établissement restera ouvert. Après une première rénovation de 200 chambres, le cabinet de Pierre-Yves Rochon entamera une seconde phase concernant les 200 chambres restantes, mais également le Café de la Paix et la grande Verrière.

International-level French architect Pierre-Yves Rochon is a maker of stars and palaces... A specialist in luxury hotels, his teams have accompanied the finest establishments on the road to obtaining prestigious distinctions. His achievements include the refurbishment of the Peninsula in Shanghai, Monte Carlo Bay Resort SBM and Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat – an expertise and reputation for excellence that naturally led the InterContinental Paris Le Grand to select him for the renovation work launched in 2002. Claire Mabon, head designer at his Paris-based firm, offered us a sneak peek as the hotel gets ready for its new facelift.

A TWO-PHASE PROJECT

Kicking off in January 2018, the work will be done in two stages to ensure the hotel - which will be staying open throughout - remains fully-functional and guests are undisturbed. Pierre-YvesRochon’s firm will revamp an initial 200 rooms before launching the second phase for the remaining 200 rooms, plus the Café de la Paix and Verrière (the vast glass canopy).

ÉTAT D’ESPRIT GÉNÉRAL

L’établissement, qui fut depuis ses débuts un exemple de modernité, connaîtra ici un vent de fraîcheur afin de suivre l’air du temps. Le cabinet de Pierre-Yves Rochon mettra cependant un point d’honneur à respecter l’ADN historique des espaces, qui fait toute l’âme de cet hôtel emblématique. L’idée ne sera pas de dénaturer, l’important est que le visiteur qui connaît déjà l’établissement retrouve tous ses repères qui auront été sublimés. Un état d’esprit qu’illustrent parfaitement les tableaux d’époque ornant les chambres en guise de clin d’œil à l’opéra : conservés, ces derniers seront néanmoins accompagnés de nouvelles œuvres, telles que des photos, réinterprétant la thématique de l’opéra de manière plus actuelle. Même chose concernant les rideaux des chambres qui reproduiront ici le motif damas ton sur ton dans le style historique revisité ou encore les moquettes des corridors, repensées dans des tons gris et bleus.

DES CHAMBRES MODERNISÉES

Les chambres standards connaîtront une petite cure de jouvence, avec notamment l’utilisation de matériaux plus actuels, et de nouveaux coloris plus clairs, des tons froids qui contrasteront avec le mobilier actuel en acajou et loupe. L’idée est ici de conserver les volumes d’époque tout en apportant une petite touche d’intemporalité, terme qui conviendra bien mieux que la notion d’ultramoderne. Les Junior Suites connaîtront

quant à elles une rénovation plus conséquente : si en 1862 le Grand Hôtel était à la pointe de la modernité en dotant ses chambres de salles de bains, l’actualisation se fera cette fois par une restructuration totale des volumes de cette pièce, ici agrandis pour accueillir, par exemple, de belles douches et de grandes vasques.

Dans la chambre même, la façade centrale sera entièrement repensée : la télé sera désormais intégrée au sein d’un mur bibliothèque accessoirisé avec des objets, des tableaux et des livres. L’idée sera ici de donner un côté résidentiel pour que chacun puisse se sentir chez soi au sein de ce prestigieux établissement. Pour cette même raison, ces suites juniors accueilleront une « expérience bar », comportant une machine à café, un frigo et un service bar.

Même objectif affiché par les quatre nouvelles suites duplex qui seront créées en lieu et place du club lounge actuel, dans l’esprit d’un véritable appartement parisien sous les toits et avec une vue incroyable sur l’opéra et le ciel de Paris.

Ce nouveau concept d’« expérience bar » JUNIOR SUITE sera traité de manière encore plus complète dans les grandes suites d’angle (suite Royale, suite Ambassadeur et suite Présidentielle) qui connaîtront également des transformations en suivant les mêmes codes : des volumes plus spacieux, des coloris intemporels et une touche de modernité dans ce somptueux écrin d’histoire

with the current mahogany and burl wood furniture. The idea is to preserve the original volumes while adding a timeless touch – far more fitting than an ultra-modern look. The Junior Suites will also be receiving plenty of attention: although the Grand Hôtel was at the height of fashion when it installed bathrooms in its rooms 1862, they are now set to be completely restructured and extended to accommodate, for example, contemporary showers and large washbasins.

The central wall of the room itself will be entirely redesigned, with the TV built into a wall bookshelf accessorized with various decorative objects, paintings and books, lending the room a lived-in feel so guests feel at home in this prestigious establishment. The Junior suites will also be fitted with a welcoming Experience Bar, with coffee machine, fridge and service bar.

The same goes for the 4 new Duplex suites replacing the current lounge club, comprising genuine Parisian apartments under the roof with stunning views over the Paris Opera and skyline.

The new Experience Bar concept will be further expanded in the large corner suites (Royal Suite, Ambassador Suite and Presidential Suite), which will also be pampered with a similar beauty treatment: larger volumes, a timeless colour scheme and touch of modernity in this sumptuous cradle of history.

Intimately linked to the transformation of the French capital, the InterContinental – Le Grand is proceeding with its own major transformation at the same time as a new Paris is taking shape, a far cry from the one in 1862, shaped by the arrival of the automobile.

aris, ses immenses places et ses larges avenues. Paris et ses perspectives à perte de vue. Qualifiée d’haussmannienne, du nom de celui qui en a dessiné les traits dès 1853, la capitale se métamorphose. Nul doute que la petite révolution qui se joue actuellement en matière de transports y est pour quelque chose, dans une ville largement façonnée pour l’automobile individuelle. Emblématique d’un mouvement affectant l’ensemble des capitales du globe, la Ville-Lumière délaisse le toutvoiture pour réaffecter l’espace jusqu’ici réservé aux autos individuelles à des modes de transport plus doux. Voilà que les célèbres voies sur berges deviennent piétonnes, que les places de stationnement laissent place à des stations Vélib, qu’on multiplie les pontspasserelles sur la Seine et, enfin, que sont créés d’immenses couloirs de bus, accessibles pour les aux vélos de plus en plus nombreux. Avec près de 700 km de pistes cyclables (1 400 km prévus d’ici 2020), ces derniers peuvent en outre traverser la ville d’est en ouest, sur une voie express qui leur est entièrement réservée. Véritable marqueur de modernité, la qualité des transports est désormais un enjeu majeur d’attractivité pour toute métropole.

C’est donc un challenge que se lance Paris depuis près d’une quinzaine d’années, au même moment où le Grand Hôtel entamait sa grande métamorphose.

1862 CRÉATION DU GRAND HÔTEL LE BARON HAUSSMANN

C’est également dans un Paris en pleine mutation que le Grand Hôtel sortira de terre, en 1862. Dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, la ville n’est encore qu’une cité à l’urbanisme médiéval, tortueux, souvent insalubre. Dès 1853, en revenant de Londres dont il fut impressionné par le niveau de modernité, l’empereur Napoléon III missionne le baron Haussmann, qu’il vient de nommer préfet de la Seine, pour mener à bien une grande transformation de la capitale. Suivant son obsession pour les lignes droites, le « culte de l’axe », Haussmann trace de grandes avenues, dessine de vastes perspectives et agrandit les places, repensant des quartiers entiers. Voilà la Ville Lumière façonnée pour le transport automobile, comble de modernité à l’époque.

It was also in a rapidly-changing Paris that the Le Grand Hotel came out of the ground in 1862.

In the first half of the 19th Century, the city was still a medieval town, tortuous, often insalubrious.

Upon returning from London in 1853, where he had been impressed by the level of modernity, the Emperor Napoleon III commissioned Baron Haussmann, who he had recently appointed Prefect of the Seine, to carry out a massive transformation of the capital. There is no doubt that the small transport revolution currently being played out has something to do with it in a city largely shaped by the arrival of the private automobile.

Emblematic of a movement affecting all world capitals, the city is leaving the car behind and reallocating the space hitherto reserved for private vehicles to softer transportation. The famous embankment roads are being pedestrianized, parking spaces making way for Vélib stations, the number of footbridges over the Seine is increasing and, finally, huge bus corridors are being created, open to the increasing numbers of bikes. With nearly 700km of cycle lanes (1400km planned by 2020), cyclists can also cross the city from east to west on an expressway entirely reserved for them. A true marker of modernity, the quality of transport services and their attractiveness is now a major challenge for any metropolis.

It’s a challenge that Paris took up almost fifteen years ago, at the same time as the Le Grand began its great transformation.

ne direction de fer dans une baguette de velours… Depuis bientôt dix ans, Philippe Jordan dirige avec passion et précision l’orchestre de l’une des plus grandes maisons internationales de cet art qu’il dit « génial » : l’Opéra de Paris. Passionné absolu, tombé dans la musique étant petit – son père n’est autre que l’illustre chef d’orchestre Armin Jordan –, ce travailleur acharné dit avoir pour rôle de « faire de la musique ». À son image, son parcours est tissé d’excellence et d’humilité.

Loin de jouer au « fils de », le jeune Suisse fait ses classes, par étapes, d’abord comme répétiteur au piano dans un petit opéra, le théâtre d’Ulm. Sa rencontre avec un grand, Daniel Barenboïm, le propulse. En 1998, il devient son assistant à l’Opéra d’État de Berlin avant de prendre le devant de la scène, entre 2001 et 2004, comme directeur musical de l’Opéra de Graz, en Autriche. Repéré, il est appelé, en 2009, à user de sa baguette magique à l’Opéra de Paris. L’envoûtement fonctionne à merveille puisqu’il apprivoise l’un des orchestres et des publics réputés les plus difficiles, grâce à son sens du collectif et à sa virtuosité. Entré en fanfare sous les ors de l’Opéra de Paris pour avoir monté le Ring de Wagner en intégralité – une première depuis 1957 –, il fera ses adieux à la capitale sur le même air lyrique. Un cercle indéfiniment vertueux.

Édifié face au futur Opéra de Paris lors de la modernisation de la ville sous le Second Empire, le Grand Hôtel fut inauguré le 5 mai 1862 lors d’une grande soirée de gala où l’incomparable M. Offenbach officiait en tant que chef d’orchestre. Le grand air d’opéra de La Traviata a alors béni ce lieu d’exception qui, treize ans plus tard, illumina toutes ses fenêtres pour offrir les feux de la rampe au nouveau joyau de la capitale, le palais Garnier, dont nul n’a alors pensé à éclairer la façade.

Comme pour sceller leur destin lié, le Grand Hôtel fait dormir ses clients dans la quiétude inspirée de chambres décorées sur les thèmes de l’opéra, de la musique et de la danse.

An iron baton in a velvet glove... For nearly a decade now, Philippe Jordan has been passionately and rigorously directing the orchestra of one of the world’s most famous hubs of an art he refers to as «amazing»: the Paris Opera.

A total aficionado, who fell into music at an early age – his father is no other than the illustrious director Armin Jordan – this tireless worker describes his job as «making music». And just like him, his track record is a model of excellence and humbleness. Far from playing the «son of» game, the young Swiss man earned his spurs little by little, starting out as a rehearsal pianist for a small opera house, the Théâtre d’Ulm. His encounter with the great Daniel Barenboïm marked the start of his ascension: in 1998, he became Barenboïm’s assistant at the Berlin State Opera before taking centre stage from 2001 to 2004 as musical director of the Graz Opera in Austria. His talent didn’t go unnoticed and in 2009, he waved his magic wand at the Palais Garnier for the first time, weaving a magic spell that tamed one of the world’s most-reputedly difficult orchestras and audiences, thanks to his team spirit and brio. Catapulted into the Paris Opera limelight for his presentation of Wagner’s monumental Ring – 15 hours of epic opera staged for the first time since 1957-, he will be saying goodbye to the capital on the same majestic musical note.

ruit de l’inspiration de Fawaz Gruosi, fondateur de la prestigieuse maison, la New Retro Skeleton Tourbillon allie avec justesse élégance et impertinence. Audace et talent, voilà des qualités qui animent le joaillier-horloger genevois depuis vingt-quatre ans, et qui furent ici convoquées pour revisiter l’une des plus élégantes complications horlogères : le tourbillon.

Pas moins de sept années de développement ont été nécessaires pour mettre au point ce modèle de complexité minutieuse. CÉSAR, UN ÉVÉNEMENT « INCOMPRESSIBLE »

culpteur estampillé « Nouveaux réalistes », mouvement créé en 1960 par Yves Klein et le critique d’art Pierre Restany, César renaît de ses cendres pour trois mois et demi au Centre Pompidou. Une occasion rare de voir « l’autre » César. Pas seulement celui des Compressions, Fers Soudés, Extensions, Empreintes, mais celui d’une sculpture oscillant entre le bestiaire et l’art du portrait.

MOHAMED BOUROUISSA, « URBAN RIDERS »

epéré dans l’exposition Dynasty en 2010 au Palais de Tokyo, Mohamed Bourouissa propose une photographie plasticienne depuis une quinzaine d’années. Depuis ses premières séries de photographies (Temps morts, Périphéries), sa pratique ne cesse d’interroger l’individu en marge dans l’espace social. Urban Riders est le résultat de huit mois de résidence artistique au sein d’un club hippique de Philadelphie fortement empreint de la culture afro-américaine.

uoi de plus évident que la naissance d’un musée pour laisser la trace indélébile d’une œuvre riche en folie, glamour et élégance. D’abord installé rue Spontini en 1961, le célèbre couturier décide en 1974 de déménager au 5 avenue Marceau. Une belle aventure qu’il décidera d’interrompre en 2002. Cet antre incontournable de la haute couture à la française deviendra finalement la Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, dont les trois principales missions se résument à la conservation des collections, l’organisation d’expositions et le soutien à des institutions ou projets culturels.

Le 3 octobre 2017, le fameux logo YSL opère une nouvelle mue pour devenir un musée à part entière. À travers un premier parcours inaugural rendant compte du génie créatif du couturier, le visiteur pourra notamment découvrir le processus de création d’une collection.

Nothing could be more natural than the birth of a museum to leave an indelible trace of work rich in extravagance, glamour and elegance. His first couture house opened in Rue Spontini in 1961 but the famous couturier decided to move from there in 1974 to 5 Avenue Marceau. A great adventure that he decided to cut short in 2002. The unmissable temple to French haute couture will finally become the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation, with 3 principle missions: conserving the collections, organising exhibitions and providing financial support to cultural projects and institutions. Au total, plus de 450 m² dévoilent les croquis, patrons, prototypes, ainsi qu’une cinquantaine de collections accompagnées d’accessoires, de photographies, films et plans de défilés. D’où l’utilité d’instaurer dans un premier temps un parcours rétrospectif, divisé en douze sections bien distinctes. Les points forts étant axés principalement sur l’histoire de la collection, le style Saint Laurent, les techniques employées, les inspirations du maître et sa table de travail, un studio ici composé d’archives personnelles. L’occasion parfaite pour découvrir ou redécouvrir les classiques emblématiques du créateur parmi lesquels la robe Mondrian, le smoking ou le trench-coat… Avant de revenir pour la prochaine exposition thématique, L’Asie rêvée d’Yves Saint Laurent, qui devrait débuter en octobre 2018.

MELANCHOLY WITH A SMILE – «DouceAmère» was Jean Poiret’s first real theatre play. After the performance, the public - who was expecting a cabaret or duo with Michel Serrault – apparently said to him «that’s not your world at all». It’s the story of a couple (Mélanie Doutey-Michel Fau) who separate after 8 years and get caught up by their past. Even thou gh the play is very funny, it’s really about relationships not «gags». Jean Poiret defined it as a «melancholy play with a smile».

MÉLANCOLIE SOURIANTE

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN - My character is a woman in a cage; her past has left her with permanent scars. She says she’s free but she isn’t really. Even so, she lives her life as an independent woman and meets men - that’s how she finally meets herself.

There’s every masculine stereotype: the ardent lover, the perfect husband and the romantic. I’m often offered roles as a woman-child, whereas here I get to play a real woman with a past, who is coming up to 40 years old. And I’ve wanted to work with Michel Fau for many years.

– Douce-Amère est la première vraie pièce de Jean Poiret. À la sortie de la représentation, le public, qui s’attendait plutôt à une pièce de cabaret ou de duo avec Michel Serrault, lui aurait dit « ce n’est pas du tout votre univers ». C’est l’histoire d’un couple (Mélanie Doutey-Michel Fau) qui se sépare au bout de huit ans et qui va subir l’empreinte de ce passé. Même si on se marre beaucoup, c’est vraiment une pièce sur le couple, il n’y a pas de « numéros ». Jean Poiret la définissait comme une « pièce à la mélancolie souriante ».

FEMME AU BORD DE LA CRISE DE NERFS – Mon personnage est une femme

en cage, car les traces du passé lui ont laissé des cicatrices indélébiles. Elle se dit libre, mais elle ne l’est pas vraiment. Elle va tout de même assumer son statut de femme indépendante en rencontrant des hommes, et ainsi se rencontrer elle-même. Il y a tous les stéréotypes masculins, avec l’amant, le parfait gendre, le fougueux, et le romantique. On me propose souvent des rôles de femme-enfant alors que dans cette pièce, je joue une vraie femme, qui a un passé, qui aborde la quarantaine. Et puis, ça faisait très longtemps que j’avais envie de travailler avec Michel Fau.

ÉCLATS DE VIE – La langue de Jean Poiret est absolument incroyable, d’une intelli-

gence folle dans la psychologie humaine. Même dans les scènes de ménage, les phrases sont teintées de feux d’artifice, et ça fait du bien dans cette société si morose et ennuyeuse. On a envie de voir des éclats de vie. La mise en scène de Michel Fau est très fidèle à l’univers de Poiret. J’ai vu bon nombre de ses spectacles, et je l’admire : il aime la langue française, il aime la vie, il y a une véritable audace dans son univers fantasque.

JOUER VRAI – Monter sur scène, c’est toujours une première fois. J’aime l’urgence, ce plaisir du direct, du présent et de la réaction du public. Il faut sauter, il faut y aller. C’est rare aujourd’hui d’avoir cette notion du « vrai » : même si c’est du jeu on ne peut pas se rattraper, on saute sans filet et j’adore ça. Il n’y a que le texte, et le public, pour nous soutenir. J’aime énormément ce temps de travail sur l’œuvre durant les répétitions, cette quête du personnage au travers de cette langue brillante du théâtre.

CONTACT SCÉNIQUE – J’ai follement le trac, mais le seul moyen de le soigner,

c’est d’y aller. Ce sont des angoisses innommables que je n’arrive pas à contrôler, mais quel plaisir que ce trac-là ! Mon rituel avant de jouer est de me masser les pieds. J’ai ainsi l’impression qu’ils sont aptes à attraper le sol, c’est ma façon à moi d’avoir un rapport concret à la scène.

SLICES OF LIFE - Jean Poiret’s dialogues are absolutely incredible; his grasp of human psychology is quite stunning. Even his domestic squabbles are genuine firework displays – it’s so refreshing in today’s morose and boring society. Everyone wants to see slices of life. Michel Fau is very faithful to Poiret’s world. I’ve seen a lot of his shows and I admire him: he loves the French language, he loves life; his burlesque world is truly audacious.

PLAYING REAL – Getting up on stage always feels like the first time. I like the urgency of it, the pleasure of playing live, being present and seeing the audience’s reaction. You just have to dive in. This type of «genuineness» is rare today: even if we’re playing a role there’s no going back, you jump without a net and I love that. There’s only the script and the audience to support you. I love delving into the work during rehearsals: the constant quest to capture a character through the brilliant language of theatre.

TOUCHDOWN - I suffer from terrible stage fright, but the only way onwards is upwards. I get uncontrollably nervous, but it’s the kind of fear that’s also a pleasure! My ritual before I go on stage is to massage my feet. It gives me the impression I’m grounded; it’s my way of creating a rapport with the stage..

CONTE POUR ADULTES – La

pièce se passe dans les années quatrevingt-dix aux États-Unis. Mon personnage est une femme qui vient d’un milieu modeste. Elle vit dans une caravane avec son mari et ils ont quatre enfants. Ils sont très amoureux, mais au moment où un cinquième enfant s’annonce, il paraît impossible de l’assumer. C’est alors qu’elle tombe sur une petite annonce venant d’un couple de riches californiens qui recherchent à adopter un enfant. Ils vont se rencontrer, mais rien ne va se passer comme prévu. C’est Jane Anderson, une dramaturge américaine qui est l’auteure de la pièce, The Baby Dance. L’histoire lui a été inspirée par des amies à elle qui voulaient adopter. Elle s’est alors demandé comment cela se passerait si de mauvais choix étaient faits et que les rapports de classes et l’argent entraient en jeu.

BOULEVERSEMENT – Il y a un vrai

mélange entre des choses très drôles et très décalées jouant sur nos défauts d’êtres humains et un humour assez acéré avec des moments profondément bouleversants. La façon dont l’auteure parle de la maternité, de la question de « normalité », de ce qui se passe si on n’a pas d’enfants, ça m’a retournée. Quand on a fait la première lecture avec l’équipe, il y a quelques mois, tous les acteurs étaient déjà totalement investis dans leur rôle, comme pris par un raz-de-marée d’émotions. C’est très rare.

J’aime jouer des pièces contemporaines, car elles ont des résonances avec les questions que l’on se pose. Le théâtre nous renvoie en direct ce que l’on est, comme dans un miroir.

LA SCÈNE, C’EST LA VIE – Je n’aime pas du tout rester dans ma loge, c’est anxiogène. Je préfère discuter avec mes partenaires, aller voir les techniciens, traîner chez l’habilleuse, entendre les spectateurs ou m’asseoir sur scène pour écouter de la musique. J’arrive très tard au théâtre, généralement vingt minutes avant les trois coups, et je me jette dans le spectacle parce que la scène est une continuité de la vie, avec la même énergie que la vie.

ASSISTANCE – Je n’ai jamais arrêté le théâtre depuis que j’ai 17 ans. C’est mon équilibre d’être sur scène, car on y entend les gens respirer. Peter Brook a un mot très joli pour exprimer ça : « l’assistance ». C’est à la fois « assis-

ADULT FAIRYTALE - The story takes place in America in the Nineties. My character is a woman from a modest family.

She lives in a caravan with her husband and they have four children. They are very much in love, but when she falls pregnant for the 5th time they just don’t feel they can cope.

That’s when she comes across a classified ad by a rich Californian couple who want to adopt a child. They meet, but nothing goes according to plan. The Baby Dance was written by the American playwright Jane Anderson. She was inspired by friends of hers who wanted to adopt and she asked herself what would happen if things went wrong and social class and money entered into the dance.

WAVE OF EMOTION – It’s a fun and zany take on our human downfalls, with razor-sharp humour and deeply moving moments. The way the author speaks about maternity, the question of «normality» and what happens when you don’t have children really overturned me. When we read the play for the first time with the team a few months ago, all the actors were already completely immersed in their role; it was like a tidal wave of emotion. It’s very rare.

HANDBOOK FOR LIFE – I admire - and am touched by - the dignity of my character. I have a lot of empathy for her and the

issues she has to deal with. Both of them are brave women who face up to things and have a way of staying composed even when everything blows up in their face. I love contemporary works because they resonate with the questions we ask ourselves. The theatre reflects us as we really are, just like a mirror.

ATTENDANCE - I’ve been acting ever since I was 17 years old. Being on stage balances me, because you can hear people breathing. Peter Brook has a very pretty word for it: «attendance», meaning both «being present» and «helping».

When you feel the audience living the same things as us, the actors, it’s uplifting. I have played at Théâtre de l’Atelier 5 or 6 times and the stage is in perfect harmony with the room.

STAGE OF LIFE - I don’t like staying in my dressing room, it makes me anxious. I prefer chatting with my partners, going to see the technicians, hanging out with the dresser, hearing the audience or sitting down on stage to listen to music. I get to the theatre very late, generally 20 minutes before the bell rings and I throw myself into the performance, because the stage is a continuity of life: it has the same energy as life.

C’est une pièce très rythmée, trépidante, qui nous entraîne dans une spirale de joie, de bonheur intense, d’euphorie, puis vers une descente vertigineuse.

VOIR LE BEAU – Au travers de la beauté du texte d’Olivier Bour-

deaut, cette famille évoque plein d’images dont cette volonté de ne voir que le beau. La force de ces personnages est qu’ils révèlent les absurdités de la vie et des choses contre lesquelles on se cogne tous.

Avec eux, il devient soudain plus important et plus urgent de voir le cerisier en fleurs que de passer des heures sur un alphabet.

DIZZY EUPHORIA - It’s a bewitching play and it really unites people, because this love story, this old-fashioned madness, has a meaning.

The way the father, mother and son stand together in the face of the inevitable, the way they jump in, even though they know they’re throwing themselves into a void, is truly magnificent. It’s a very exciting, fast-paced play that leads us into a spiral of joy, intense happiness and euphoria, before a dizzy descent.

GLASS HALF FULL – Thanks to the beauty of Olivier Bourdeaut’s text, this family evokes a lot of things, like the desire to only see the glass half full. The characters’ strength lies in the fact that they pinpoint the absurdities of life and things we all come up against; it suddenly becomes more important and more urgent to see a cherry tree in blossom then spend hours learning the alphabet.

et c’est un rôle auquel je rêvais. Cette femme est toutes les femmes à la fois : une mère absolue, une amoureuse absolue. Elle est excentrique, fantasque, libre, et elle lutte contre sa folie sans jamais vouloir la subir. Cette femme est un superhéros. Elle a une volonté de voir le beau.

Pour jouer ce personnage fantaisiste qui part dans des délires, j’ai beaucoup pensé à l’enfance, cette forme de joie, de folie et de liberté dans laquelle on ne connaît pas de limites sociales. Ma maman n’a pas encore vu la pièce, mais, en lisant le livre, elle m’a confié que ce rôle était pour moi.

Je partage avec ce personnage une forme de fantaisie, cette envie de faire la fête et cette soif d’amour.

SUPERHEROINE - I’d read the book and it’s a role I dreamt of.

This woman embodies all women; she is the total mother and the total lover. She’s eccentric, whimsical, liberated and she fights her madness without ever bowing down to it. This woman is a superheroine.

She has a will to see the bright side of life. To interpret this playful and sometimes delusional character I thought a lot about childhood, that kind of joy, madness and freedom that has no social boundaries. My mother hasn’t seen the play yet, but when she read the book she said she thought the role was made for me. I share a kind of whacky nature with this character, her desire for fun and her thirst for love.

FUNAMBULISME – Je me demande toujours la veille pourquoi je me suis mise là-dedans, et après ce sentiment disparaît, mais je ne connais pas de spectacles où je suis rentrée les mains dans les poches. La scène, c’est un exercice de funambule. Une fois que la représentation a commencé, on lui appartient et elle nous appartient, elle est pleine d’aléas. Tout dépend de la synergie avec le public, de l’état dans lequel vous arrivez.

TIGHTROPE WALKING - The day before, I always wonder why I got myself into this; the feeling does go away, but I don’t remember ever strolling into a performance.

The stage is like tightrope walking.

Once the show has started you belong to it and it belongs to you, it’s full of uncertainties. Everything depends on the synergy with the audience and the condition you arrive in.

MOMENT SACRÉ – Dans ma formation théâtrale, j’ai rencontré

beaucoup de gens habités, et depuis, le plateau a pour moi quelque chose de sacré. Il faut se préparer à y entrer. Alors, une heure et demie avant la représentation, j’aime avoir le temps de voir la scène, de retrouver l’équipe, de me maquiller. J’ai souvent des bougies, des photos et de la musique dans ma loge. C’est mon petit moment sacré. Au Festival Off d’Avignon (première de la pièce En attendant Bojangles), avant le lever du rideau, je me chantais la chanson de Romy Schneider dans Les Choses de la vie : « Ce soir, nous sommes septembre… Et j’ai fermé ma chambre… Le soleil n’y entrera plus…

Tu ne m’aimes plus ».

SACRED MOMENT - I met lots of passionate people during my theatre training. Ever since, the stage has been sacred to me. You have to be ready for it. So, an hour and a half before the performance, I like to take time to see the stage, meet with the team and put on my make-up. I often have candles, photos and music in my dressing room. It’s my little sacred moment.

At the Avignon Off Festival (première of the play «Waiting for Bojangles») I sang a song by Romy Schneider in «The Things of Life» to myself before the curtain went up: «Tonight it’s September and I have closed the bedroom... The sun will not enter anymore... You didn’t love me anymore.»

DRUNK ON ART AT LES DEUX MAGOTS:

A novelty shop neighbouring Le Flore was transformed into a café and liquor store in 1885. It attracted the greatest poets of the 19th century; Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud and Stéphane Mallarmé liked to meet there. The literary world continued to swear by this legendary café after the surrealists founded the «Deux Magots Award» in 1933.

Going to Le Flore, the café that made Saint-Germain-Des-Prés famous, has never been a trivial affair since the day it opened in 1885. Guillaume Apollinaire, André Breton and Louis Aragon invented the word «surrealist» there, whereas Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir drew inspiration from Le Flore. Each fragrant cup of coffee and every snatch of conversation since have been stamped with the «artistic» flavour of Paris.

l est des signes qui ne trompent pas : dans les grands magasins comme chez les disquaires, et même chez le très tendance « Colette » du 1er arrondissement, les pochettes grand format des 33 tours se taillent progressivement une place de choix. Nostalgie passagère dans un monde saturé de digital ? L’engouement semble aller bien au-delà du simple effet de mode : en progression de 71% de 2012 à 2016, les ventes de vinyles ne faiblissent pas, et ont même atteint 60% d’augmentation pour la seule année 2017.

Pour ses fans, souvent nostalgiques d’une époque qu’ils n’ont pas connue, le « LP » possèderait un son « chaud » dont les formats numériques seraient dépourvus, une plus grande dynamique – c’est-à-dire un plus grand écart entre les notes les plus faibles et les plus fortes- ainsi qu’enfin, un meilleur rendu des basses.

Des arguments subjectifs laissant perplexes les ingénieurs du son qui se sont évertués depuis trente ans à « purifier » la musique en la digitalisant. D’ailleurs, 95% des disques pressés aujourd’hui le sont justement à partir d’enregistrements numériques. Peu étonnant donc que certains adeptes du digital se montrent quelque peu sceptiques, à l’instar du chanteur Neil Young, qui ne voit là « qu’un effet de mode ». Dès lors, faut-il acquérir des vinyles neufs ? Sans hésiter pour les disques d’occasion, pressés jusqu’aux années 80, analogiques de bout en bout. Pour les disques récents, qui restent formatés pour des supports numériques, mieux vaudra s’abstenir. Enfin, les rééditions d’albums anciens, réalisées à partir d’une copie numérique de l’enregistrement analogique originel, ne devraient pas se distinguer d’un disque totalement analogique, même pour une oreille experte. Les amoureux des beaux objets n’auront quant à eux que faire de ces subtilités acoustiques.

Passing nostalgia in a world saturated with digital technology?

The infatuation seems to be more than a simple trend: with a 71% increase between 2012 and 2016, vinyl sales look set to continue their onward march and actually rose by 60% in 2017 alone.

According to its fans – who regret an era they didn’t get to live – the LP offers a warmer and more dynamic sound than its digital peers, i.e. a greater differentiation between the softest and loudest notes and a more powerful bassline.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

After striving to «purify» music for the last 30 years by digitizing it, sound engineers find these subjective arguments somewhat odd.

What’s more, 95% of the vinyls pressed today are made using digital recordings. So it’s not really surprising if certain digital fans like Neil Young are sceptical, viewing the phenomenon as a fad. Should we continue to buy vinyls? If they’re second-hand, pure analog recordings made up to the Eighties, yes, definitely. But stay away from more recent records, formatted for digital media.

Lastly, old albums reissued using a digital recording of the original analog version should be indistinguishable from their predecessor, even to expert ears. Although it’s safe to say that lovers of beautiful things won’t give a hoot about acoustic subtleties...
