Port Angeles Lefties Vs. Wenatchee AppleSox
Series Program June 18 - 20, 2019 Civic Field
Lefties return Home The Lefties face the Wenatchee AppleSox June 18-20 at Civic Field By: Joe Traub
T
hrough 15 games and 12 league contests in 2019, The Port Angeles Lefties have already experienced some of the major highs and lows in the game of baseball. The Lefties return home to Civic Field with an overall record of 8-7 (6-6 in league play) as they welcome the Wenatchee AppleSox for a three-game series. Port Angeles just completed a road trip in which they lost four of six games, two of three to these very same AppleSox in the first leg of the trip. Port Angeles started the season on a tear, splitting a pair of non-league contests at home against the Northwest Honkers before taking a ferry to Victoria and smashing the Union de Reyes Cuban 23 and under national team by a score of 13–5. The Lefties then took two of three games at Portland, winning the final two contests by a combined 17–2 score. They followed suit back at home against the Bellingham Bells. After they lost the first game 11–10, the Lefties won 8–2 on June 8 and then 2–1 on June 9 to secure another series victory. Continued
The Lefties cruised to a 15–9 win to start the six-game road trip in Wenatchee behind Nick DiPonzio, who returned to the starting lineup with four hits, four RBI and two doubles while finishing a home run shy of the cycle. However, the rest of the trip was a tough slog, as Port Angeles was routed in the final two games at Paul Thomas Sr. Field before traveling to Ridgefield.
2019 Lefties Schedule
History was made in the first-ever matchup between the Lefties and Ridgefield Raptors, as Port Angeles came back from a 9–3 deficit to win 12– 10. The six run deficit overcome to win was the largest in Lefties history. DiPonzio had two clutch hits in that rally, Dylan Cyr added a pinch-hit two-run homer and Connor Denning provided the biggest hit of all, a two-run double in the ninth inning to put the visitors on top for good. Port Angeles then experienced heartbreak the next two nights, losing on walk-off hits in both contests. Aaron Zavala had the game-winning hit for Ridgefield on Saturday as they beat the Lefties 4–3 in 11 innings. The Lefties looked to be in solid position to earn the series win, as a six-run eighth inning gave them a 7–1 lead on Sunday. However, the Raptors scored six of their own in the bottom of the frame and then earned the victory when Steve Ramirez singled off the wall in right field. Manager Darren Westergard and his troops will look to get back on the winning track at home after dropping four of the previous five games. The series opener with Wenatchee will be a two-dollar Tuesday featuring hot dogs and Rainier beer. Wednesday is a trivia night sponsored by 1st Security Bank. Thursday’s series finale is Educator Appreciation Night sponsored by Coldwell Bankers.
Dear West Coast League Fans, We’re proud of the reputation our league has developed since a modest beginning in 2005, and this year we’ll continue building upon this reputation. Players quickly discover a challenging level of play, with an atmosphere—demanding schedule, extensive travel, wood bats, and of course top-flight competition—matching the professional conditions that many West Coast League players will soon experience in the Minor Leagues. Meanwhile, college coaches trust that their players will receive strong instruction in our professional atmosphere, and return to their programs as better players. Our coaches and players live with host families, and play in front of large crowds in a range of intimate, fan-friendly ballparks, from old minor league parks to state-of-the-art collegiate stadiums.
West Coast League teams feature players from around the U.S. and Canada, and every team is committed to helping college players develop both their baseball and life skills. Our teams are also dedicated to enriching their communities, and our member communities are devoted to their hometown teams. The environment is nurturing, the atmosphere thrilling, and the Pacific Northwest setting the best anywhere. No other league has more breathtaking geography. No other league features the professionalstyle schedule of the West Coast League, with extended road trips and home stands. No other league can match the dedication and financial strength of our owners. No other league has a brighter future. Thank you for supporting West Coast League baseball!
Rob Neyer, West Coast League Commissioner

Over 1.4 Million in 19 Months
T
he Olympic Medical Center Foundation knows how to put the FUN in fundraising while providing serious money for a serious cause. The Foundation has given 1,400,000 to or on behalf of OMC in the last 19 months. It is also in the midst of raising money for the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center. “Counting pledges from donors, we have now raised over $1,000,000 towards the cancer center expansion,” said OMC Foundation Executive Director Bruce Skinner.
other staff, and other areas. Last year the Foundation donated $150,000 to help OMC purchase a nuclear camera for cardiac stress testing to replace one that has reached its service life. The new camera will reduce radiation exposure to the patient, reduce the amount of time that patients have to be in an uncomfortable position form 30 minutes to 6-10 minutes, and provide improved imaging with enhanced technology.
“Once again we are raising money for something that will save lives” said OMC In addition to direct donations, the Foundation president Bill Littlejohn. Foundation stages six annual fundraising events. They are the Red, Set, Go Heart Luncheon, Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby presented by Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, Sonny Sixkiller Celebrity Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto, Hog Wild presented by Sequim Health & Rehabilitation and Crestwood Health & Rehabilitation (which benefits the OMC Children’s Clinic), Harvest of Hope presented by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (which benefits the OMC Cancer Center) and Festival of Trees.
