Port Angeles Lefties Vs. Corvallis Knights
Series Program July 8-10, 2019 Civic Field
Lefties RETURN HOME TO FACE RED Hot Corvallis knights By: Joe Traub
W
ith a six-run lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, it appeared academic that the Port Angeles Lefties would take the opener of a three-game series in Longview. But ten batters, four hits and seven runs later, the Cowlitz Black Bears had completed a stunning comeback and defeated Port Angeles 8–7 on Friday evening at Story Field. Jordan Banholzer took the hill for the Lefties in the eighth inning and struggled to find the strike zone. He allowed two hits and walked three batters, leaving with a 7–3 lead. Zach Tresemer relieved and gave up an RBI single followed by a fielders choice grounder and an RBI groundout. Luke Price stood in and delivered the biggest hit of all, a bloop double just past the reach of third baseman Evan Hurn to give Cowlitz the lead. Port Angeles went down in order on two flyouts and a grounder in the ninth to end the contest. Continued
The Lefties (14-15, 10-14 WCL) broke a 1–1 tie in the fourth inning by erupting for five runs. Charlie Nasuti doubled in two runs and immediately scored on a run-scoring double by Damiano Palmegiani. After a pitching change, two outs and a walk, Matt Christian roped another double into the left-field corner to plate Palmegiani and Gavin Rork for a 6–1 lead. Port Angeles added another tally in the fifth on Trevor Rosenberg’s RBI single. Nasuti, Palmegiani and Rosenberg (7-8-9 in the lineup) combined to go 6 for 12 with 4 RBI. The Lefties surrendered two runs before recording an out in the first inning Saturday, an inning that foreshadowed how much of their evening would end up. The Black Bears used a balanced attack to beat the Lefties 8–4 at Story Field in Cowlitz. Dwayne Angebrandt suffered through a rare poor outing on the mound, giving up four runs in 3.2 innings. After Ryan Kim singled home two runs in the first inning, he hit a solo homer in the third to extend Cowlitz’s lead. Seth Beckstead then led off the fourth inning with a home run to make it 4–0. Meanwhile, Alex Salazar was literally untouchable on the mound for the Black Bears. The right-hander was perfect through four innings while striking out seven batters. C.J. Schauwecker broke up the combined perfect game bid with a single after Cowlitz went to the bullpen in the fifth inning. Trailing 5–0 into the sixth, the Leftie scratched for a pair of two-out runs. Matt Christian reached on an error to plate Nick DiPonzio, then Schauwecker singled in Justin Fugitt. The Black Bears tacked on three more in the seventh before Zander Marco came off the bench for a pinch-hit, two-run single in the ninth inning for the final scores of 8–4. The Lefties managed six hits in the contest, two coming from Schauwecker. Port Angeles took it on the chin again Sunday, falling 6–3 to the Cowlitz Black Bears in the finale of the three-game series in Longview. With the loss, the Lefties have been swept in a series for the second time in 2019.
Starter Nathan Bonck pitched brilliantly for Port Angeles, allowing just two runs on four hits in six innings of work. Cowlitz led 1–0 in the top of the sixth when Ronnie Rust stepped in and delivered an opposite-field three-run homer to right field off Kyle Rich for a 3–1 Lefties advantage. The Black Bears plated one in the bottom of the frame and things came undone in the seventh with Carter Loewen on the mound. A leadoff walk and stolen base turned into a run when Seth Beckstead singled home the tying run. After another walk, Austin Bell provided the deciding hit, a two-run triple to right-center to give Cowlitz a 5–3 lead. Bell later scored on a sacrifice fly. Port Angeles went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings, ending the first half of West Coast League play with a 10-16 record and in last place of the North division. The Lefties overall mark is 14-17 including non-league contests. The Lefties now return home to start a three-game series against three-time defending champion Corvallis. First pitch on Monday from Civic Field will be at 6:35 p.m. Frankie Scalzo will be on the mound for Port Angeles against a starter to be determined for the Knights. It is Military Monday, meaning all former and current service personnel are invited to attend the game for free. The Corvallis Knights enter the series on an active 15-game win streak, having clinched the first half South division title over the weekend. The Knights are threetime defending league champions. Following the Corvallis series, Port Angeles will host the Everett Merchants in a non-league matchup on Thursday before heading back on the road to face Yakima Valley for four games in three days.

Dear West Coast League Fans, We’re proud of the reputation our league has developed since a modest beginning in 2005, and this year we’ll continue building upon this reputation. Players quickly discover a challenging level of play, with an atmosphere—demanding schedule, extensive travel, wood bats, and of course top-flight competition—matching the professional conditions that many West Coast League players will soon experience in the Minor Leagues. Meanwhile, college coaches trust that their players will receive strong instruction in our professional atmosphere, and return to their programs as better players. Our coaches and players live with host families, and play in front of large crowds in a range of intimate, fan-friendly ballparks, from old minor league parks to state-of-the-art collegiate stadiums. West Coast League teams feature players from around the U.S. and Canada, and every team is committed to helping college players develop both their baseball and life skills. Our teams are also dedicated to enriching their communities, and our member communities are devoted to their hometown teams. The environment is nurturing, the atmosphere thrilling, and the Pacific Northwest setting the best anywhere. No other league has more breathtaking geography. No other league features the professionalstyle schedule of the West Coast League, with extended road trips and home stands. No other league can match the dedication and financial strength of our owners. No other league has a brighter future.
Thank you for supporting West Coast League baseball!
Rob Neyer, West Coast League Commissioner

OMC Foundation
Over 1.4 Million in 19 Months
T
he Olympic Medical Center Foundation knows how to put the FUN in fundraising while providing serious money for a serious cause. The Foundation has given 1,400,000 to or on behalf of OMC in the last 19 months. It is also in the midst of raising money for the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center. “Counting pledges from donors, we have now raised over $1,000,000 towards the cancer center expansion,” said OMC Foundation Executive Director Bruce Skinner.
staff, and other areas. Last year the Foundation donated $150,000 to help OMC purchase a nuclear camera for cardiac stress testing to replace one that has reached its service life. The new camera will reduce radiation exposure to the patient, reduce the amount of time that patients have to be in an uncomfortable position form 30 minutes to 6-10 minutes, and provide improved imaging with enhanced technology.
“Once again we are raising money for something that will save lives” said OMC In addition to direct donations, the Foundation president Bill Littlejohn. Foundation stages six annual fundraising events. They are the Red, Set, Go Heart Luncheon, Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby presented by Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, Sonny Sixkiller Celebrity Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto, Hog Wild presented by Sequim Health & Rehabilitation and Crestwood Health & Rehabilitation (which benefits the OMC Children’s Clinic), Harvest of Hope presented by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (which benefits the OMC Cancer Center) and Festival of Trees. Funds raised have gone towards the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center, new equipment, education for nursing and other
