Port Angeles Lefties Vs. Bend Elks
Series Program June 28 - 30, 2019 Civic Field
Lefties Continue Their 8 game homestand By: Joe Traub The Port Angeles Lefties experienced a very wet series against the Yakima Valley Pippins, but that didn’t stop them from being productive when they did get on the field. After seeing their series opener with the Pippins postponed due to rain Tuesday, the Lefties had double the fun on Wednesday. Port Angeles rode outstanding pitching, two Matt Christian home runs and a timely error to a doubleheader sweep of Yakima Valley, winning by final scores of 4–1 and 5–4. Port Angeles only had two hits in the opening game, but they were both clutch. Following a walk and hit batter in the home first, Christian deposited a Mark Finkelnburg offering over the left-field wall to give the Lefties a 3–1 lead. Christian then doubled in the sixth inning, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Continued
After Christian’s heroics were more than enough for Frankie Scalzo, who was in control from the get-go. Scalzo threw a complete game three-hitter in the seven-inning contest, facing just two batters over the minimum. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. Only two balls left the infield against Scalzo, who improved his ERA to a team-leading 1.80. The Pippins plated three runs (one earned) against Kyle Hamrick in the first inning of the nightcap, but Christian once again had an answer. He hit another three-run shot in the bottom of the first, also to left field, to tie the game at 3. The teams traded single tallies in the fourth, with Trevor Rosenberg plating Nick DiPonzio with a base hit for the Lefties. With the score still tied in the final scheduled inning of the doubleheader, Gavin Rork led off with an infield single and advanced on a throwing error. Evan Hurn walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Nick Brown then struck out Charlie Nasuti before intentionally walking Christian. After C.J. Schauwecker struck out, Ethan Groff hit a bouncer to short that went off the glove of Tanner Parker for a game-ending error. Thursday’s game, scheduled to be the finale of the three-game series, was also postponed due to rain and unplayable field conditions, leaving the Lefties with an abbreviated two-game sweep. Port Angeles is in third place of the WCL North Division with a record of 9-11. They are 4.5 games behind first-place Victoria with six games remaining in the first half.
Port Angeles now welcomes the Bend Elks to town for the first time in 2019. The Elks come in with a record of 8-10, good for fourth place in the South. All-time, the Lefties have taken six of nine matchups from Bend. The Elks are managed by Joe Dominiak. Doug Davis, who pitched for parts of 13 years and six different teams in the major leagues, is Bend’s pitching coach.

Dear West Coast League Fans, We’re proud of the reputation our league has developed since a modest beginning in 2005, and this year we’ll continue building upon this reputation. Players quickly discover a challenging level of play, with an atmosphere—demanding schedule, extensive travel, wood bats, and of course top-flight competition—matching the professional conditions that many West Coast League players will soon experience in the Minor Leagues. Meanwhile, college coaches trust that their players will receive strong instruction in our professional atmosphere, and return to their programs as better players. Our coaches and players live with host families, and play in front of large crowds in a range of intimate, fan-friendly ballparks, from old minor league parks to state-of-the-art collegiate stadiums.
West Coast League teams feature players from around the U.S. and Canada, and every team is committed to helping college players develop both their baseball and life skills. Our teams are also dedicated to enriching their communities, and our member communities are devoted to their hometown teams. The environment is nurturing, the atmosphere thrilling, and the Pacific Northwest setting the best anywhere. No other league has more breathtaking geography. No other league features the professionalstyle schedule of the West Coast League, with extended road trips and home stands. No other league can match the dedication and financial strength of our owners. No other league has a brighter future. Thank you for supporting West Coast League baseball!
Rob Neyer, West Coast League Commissioner
