fter a four-game in three day series in Yakima Valley that saw the Lefties split with the Pippins, Port Angeles returns home to begin a six-game WCL homestand against Cowlitz and Kelowna.

It got interesting for the Lefties in the ninth inning Friday, but ultimately they were able to hold on for a 4â€“1 victory in the series opener at Yakima County Stadium. Leading 4â€“0 in the bottom of the ninth, A.C. Chavez was one out away from finishing off a combined team shutout when Nick Israel reached on an infield since to plate Brady Hormel from third base. Tyler Dean then got aboard on an error by third baseman Justin Fugitt. With the tying run at the plate in the person of Luke Schwartz, the umpiring crew and Pippins bench engaged in a lengthy argument that ultimately led to Carter Loewen coming in for Chavez. Continued

Loewen got Schwartz to bounce to third baseman Fugitt, who apparently threw to first in time to end the game. As the Lefties were on the field shaking hands to celebrate a win, the umpiring crew reversed the call and said first baseman Baxter Halligan was off the base when he received the throw. Yakima Valley was still alive and brought the potential winning run to the plate, but Loewen struck out pinch-hitter Christian Padilla on a high fastball to end the game. Port Angeles plated two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings each. Halligan was in the middle of both rallies, hitting a sacrifice fly in the fourth before doubling in Matt Christian and then scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth. The Lefties recorded eight hits, two apiece by Halligan and Gavin Rork. Michael Buchanan earned the win in relief as he threw four scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out six. Buchanan retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced. Starting pitcher Nate Weeldryer was also strong, allowing one hit and fanning two Pippins in three shutout frames.

It was a reversal of fortunes on Saturday, as the Pippins rode a dominant outing from starting pitcher Joe Magrisi to an 8–1 victory to even the series. Magrisi allowed four hits while striking out 11 in seven scoreless innings to improve his season ERA to 0.62 in five starts. Port Angeles was held to six total hits in the game. Rork singled and scored on Evan Hurn’s double in the eighth inning to prevent a shutout. Yakima Valley had broken it open with four runs in the sixth – all unearned, to chase starting pitcher Tyler Tan from the contest. A long Sunday of baseball eventually culminated in a split of a doubleheader and the four-game series between the two teams Pippins. The Pippins took the opener 5–2 before Port Angeles used clutch pitching to emerge victorious 2–1 in the nightcap at Yakima County Stadium.

The Lefties took a quick lead in the first game, playing as the home team to make up a rainout from June 27 at Civic Field. Ethan Groff launched his second home run of the season in the second inning, then Matt Christian plated Rork with an RBI groundout to make it 2–0 after three. But Yakima Valley roared back in the fourth, scoring five runs on five singles against Nathan Bonck and Kyle Hamrick for a 5–2 lead. That is where the final margin would end, as Jack Gonzales went all seven innings for the complete game in his first start of the year for the Pippins. After a 40-minute break between games, Port Angeles starter Dwayne Angebrandt dealt with constant traffic on the bases. He stranded 10 baserunners – six in scoring position in his five innings on the mound, scattering seven hits. Tyler Dean’s runscoring single was the only tally the Pippins plated. Meanwhile, the Lefties benefitted from timely hitting in game two. Groff led off the second inning with a single and eventually scored on an error. In the fourth, Groff hit a bloop double down the right field line and scored on Zander Marco’s two-bagger ripped into the corner for a 2–0 lead. The setup/closer combination of A.C. Chavez and Carter Loewen was rock solid, allowing just one baserunner in the final two innings. Loewen struck out Tyler Dean looking on an outside fastball to finish off a day and night that saw 5 hours and 5 minutes elapse between the two games. Port Angeles looks home looking for revenge against the Cowlitz Black Bears, who swept the Lefties in Longview from July 5-7. That started a seven-game winning streak for Cowlitz, who has since lost their last two games. Black Bears outfielder Austin Bell is fourth in the WCL with a .368 batting average.

OMC Foundation

Over 1.4 Million in 19 Months

he Olympic Medical Center Foundation knows how to put the FUN in fundraising while providing serious money for a serious cause. The Foundation has given 1,400,000 to or on behalf of OMC in the last 19 months. It is also in the midst of raising money for the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center. “Counting pledges from donors, we have now raised over $1,000,000 towards the cancer center expansion,” said OMC Foundation Executive Director Bruce Skinner.
