Port Angeles Lefties Vs. Highline Bears
Series Program July 2-3, 2019 Civic Field
Lefties Conclude Homestand With Non-League Foe By: Joe Traub The Port Angeles Lefties conclude their season long seven-game homestand with a pair of non-league games against the Highline Bears. The contests will kick off Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. and Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. After sweeping Yakima Valley in a shortened two-game set, Port Angeles had a little more trouble with the Bend Elks. Despite an eighth inning comeback by the Lefties, the Elks had the last laugh Friday night at Civic Field. Marco Young plated two runs with a double into the right-field corner and the Elks escaped with a 4–2, 10-inning victory in the series opener. The Lefties had won their previous three games, the series finale in Walla Walla and sweeping a home doubleheader on Wednesday in a rain-abbreviated series with Yakima Valley. Dwayne Angebrant turned in an exceptional outing on the mound for Port Angeles, allowing just one run on four hits in six innings. However, he left trailing 1–0. Continued
The deficit was 2–0 in the eighth inning when Charlie Nasuti led off with a bloop double to right field. After two outs, Damiano Palmegiani reached on a throwing error with Nasuti scoring. C.J. Schauwecker then came in cold off the bench and singled home Palmegiani to tie the game at 2. After a walk to Baxter Halligan, pinch-runner Nick Berry was picked off second base to end the rally. Port Angeles went in order in the ninth inning to set up Young’s heroics in extras. The Lefties have lost both of their extra-innings contests in 2019. On Saturday, the hosts came out determined to tie the series at 1. In a see-saw battle on Saturday, the Port Angeles Lefties held tough and lumbered up on their way to a 5–4 victory over the Bend Elks at Civic Field. Port Angeles, which has won four of five, set up a rubber match with the win. Trailing 1–0 in the fifth inning, Alex Garcia singled with two outs and advanced to second when Gavin Rork drew a walk. Bend starter Michael Hansell was replaced by Alan Embree (son of the former major leaguer) who promptly surrendered a three-run home run to Justin Fugitt to give the Lefties a 3–1 lead. The blast was Fugitt’s first of the season. The Elks quickly had an answer as designated hitter Dayton Provost lined a two-run shot to right field to tie the game in the sixth. But in the bottom half, C.J. Schauwecker led off with a solo shot to left-center off Embree to give the hosts a 4–3 lead.
Bend tied it in the next frame on an error by Schauwecker, but once again the stalemate did not last. Garcia scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and that ended up being the deciding run. In his Lefties debut, Jordan Banholzer worked around a pair of walks in the eighth inning and kept the Elks off the board. A.C. Chavez got two strikeouts and a groundout in the ninth to preserve the victory. The Lefties did not get their bats going Sunday afternoon, as they were held to a season -low three hits in a series-ending, 4–1 defeat to Bend. Nathan Bonck turned in three hitless innings relief for Port Angeles. All-time, the Lefties are 3-1 against the Highline Bears, with all matchups taking place last season. Port Angeles swept a three-game series in mid-July before Highline won the final contest of the season at Civic Field by a final score of 4–3 on Aug. 7.

Dear West Coast League Fans, We’re proud of the reputation our league has developed since a modest beginning in 2005, and this year we’ll continue building upon this reputation. Players quickly discover a challenging level of play, with an atmosphere—demanding schedule, extensive travel, wood bats, and of course top-flight competition—matching the professional conditions that many West Coast League players will soon experience in the Minor Leagues. Meanwhile, college coaches trust that their players will receive strong instruction in our professional atmosphere, and return to their programs as better players. Our coaches and players live with host families, and play in front of large crowds in a range of intimate, fan-friendly ballparks, from old minor league parks to state-of-the-art collegiate stadiums.
West Coast League teams feature players from around the U.S. and Canada, and every team is committed to helping college players develop both their baseball and life skills. Our teams are also dedicated to enriching their communities, and our member communities are devoted to their hometown teams. The environment is nurturing, the atmosphere thrilling, and the Pacific Northwest setting the best anywhere. No other league has more breathtaking geography. No other league features the professionalstyle schedule of the West Coast League, with extended road trips and home stands. No other league can match the dedication and financial strength of our owners. No other league has a brighter future. Thank you for supporting West Coast League baseball!
Rob Neyer, West Coast League Commissioner

OMC Foundation
Over 1.4 Million in 19 Months
T
he Olympic Medical Center Foundation knows how to put the FUN in fundraising while providing serious money for a serious cause. The Foundation has given 1,400,000 to or on behalf of OMC in the last 19 months. It is also in the midst of raising money for the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center. “Counting pledges from donors, we have now raised over $1,000,000 towards the cancer center expansion,” said OMC Foundation Executive Director Bruce Skinner.
other staff, and other areas. Last year the Foundation donated $150,000 to help OMC purchase a nuclear camera for cardiac stress testing to replace one that has reached its service life. The new camera will reduce radiation exposure to the patient, reduce the amount of time that patients have to be in an uncomfortable position form 30 minutes to 6-10 minutes, and provide improved imaging with enhanced technology.
“Once again we are raising money for something that will save lives” said OMC In addition to direct donations, the Foundation president Bill Littlejohn. Foundation stages six annual fundraising events. They are the Red, Set, Go Heart Luncheon, Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby presented by Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, Sonny Sixkiller Celebrity Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto, Hog Wild presented by Sequim Health & Rehabilitation and Crestwood Health & Rehabilitation (which benefits the OMC Children’s Clinic), Harvest of Hope presented by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (which benefits the OMC Cancer Center) and Festival of Trees. Funds raised have gone towards the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center, new equipment, education for nursing and
