About the Rick Kaps Award
It is with great pride and respect that the OMC Foundation established the Rick Kaps Award, which is presented on an annual basis to an organization or individual for their outstanding support of cancer care on the North Olympic Peninsula. The award is named for Sequim teacher and coaching great Rick Kaps (left), who passed away from cancer in 1998 at age 55.
Kaps was head coach of Sequim High School’s basketball team from 1975 to 1989. His 1988 team, led by son Ryan, made it to the finals in the Class AA state tournament with nary a starter over 6’-3”. The team finished second to Rainier Beach, which was led by future NBA star Doug Christie. Over the years, four of his teams made it to the state tournament, while six were district champions. He was named Washington State Basketball Coach of the Year in 1988.
"I think that Rick Kaps was the closest thing our town has had to a hero," said fellow Sequim High School educator Mark Textor.
When Kaps passed away from cancer in February 1998, over 1,000 family members, friends, colleagues and ex-players packed into what is now Rick Kaps Gym at Sequim High School to pay their respects.
"Rick Kaps may be best known as the highly successful coach of Sequim basketball games," wrote Sequim Gazette Editor Jim Manders, "But there was much more to the man than what happened on a shiny wooden court."
"I have memories of breaking chalk and flying clipboards, but through it all, I know that he always cared about his players," said Larry Hill, Kaps' assistant and successor as head coach. "Most people remember him as a coach, but first and foremost, he was a teacher."
"He really knew what was important in life, which was relationships with people he cared about," said Kaps' son Ryan, who went on to play basketball at the University of Washington and Weber State University.
"He was one in a million," said longtime friend Dave Blake. "He would drop everything to help someone in need."

2023 Award Winner Barb Cammack
Barb, her late husband, Jim, and son Joe have always believed in the Foundation’s mission and goals. They have donated to all of the Foundation’s events since 1990.
Most of all, Barb has believed in the Patient Navigator Program, supporting the program that has paid for basic living costs for hundreds of patients at Olympic Medical Cancer Center. The Cammack family have been the largest donors to the OMC patient navigator program.

Featured Chef – Eric Thomson
Eric Thomson started his culinary career at the Hotel Utah in the early 80s as an American Culinary Federation Apprentice Chef. After graduation, stops included: The Lodge at Pebble Beach, French boutique restaurants in Palo Alto and Mountain View CA, and an Italian Restaurant, Trattoria Romana. Feeling the itch to continue his professional education, enrollment in UNLV for a bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration became paramount. Following graduation, he was a Room Chef for three restaurants in the Palace Station Hotel and Casino.
Moving back to California in 1998 started the best years of his corporate career – three years plus with Bon Appetit Management Co. (BAMCO) as a chef and catering manager for Sysco Systems in San Jose, CA. It was there his diverse background in flavors and textures started, being introduced to Indian cuisine, Thai, and other Asian fare. The next several years were spent working for Guckenheimer Inc., another corporate foodservice company, as an account manager and area manager in the San Francisco Bay area for accounts such as VISA, Adobe software, SAP, BEA, and several law firms.
Tedescos is the second restaurant operated by the Thomsons, the first was near Auburn, CA. Christina and Eric both try to provide the community with a quality dining experience and work with local groups such as WAG, the Boys and Girls Club and Pet Possie, and help them raise money through sponsored events and catering.

The winning bidder will be able to deliver a dozen pies to patients at the Olympic Medical Cancer Center the day prior to Thanksgiving.
They will be baked using Kate McDermott’s pie recipe from the “Art of the Pie”.
“The words “pumpkin” and “pie” when placed together are pretty much synonymous with Thanksgiving, home and family Pumpkin pie was one of the pies my grandma made for our family every year and the aroma of it baking always brings her to mind. She used canned pumpkin and I’m not talking about pumpkin puree that she canned herself. Nope, my grandma firmly believed that canned pumpkin from the supermarket was just fine for pie Grandma was right ”

Fund a Need
Patient Navigator Program & Cancer Center Equipment
We want to provide $35,000 in funding for the Patient Navigator program, which provides monies for living expenses for OMC Cancer Center Patients and additional funds for equipment at the Cancer Center
Story from olympicmedical.org
Bob Buckingham and his wife, Betsy, started running a food truck after retirement – Bob retiring from the Port of Neah Bay where he was the director and his wife from the Sophie Trettevick Indian Health Center But, about two years ago, when he struggled to keep up with the food truck operation, he knew it was time for a visit to his primary care provider
“I was getting kind of run down and we had to shut [the food truck] down because I really couldn’t keep up with my wife working on it,” Bob says
Bob had not been to the doctor in about five years, and he made the two-hour trip from Neah Bay to his primary care provider in Sequim, where blood work revealed that he had chronic myeloid leukemia
“It was a bit of a surprise,” he says His doctor referred him to Olympic Medical Cancer Center in Sequim.
“I am truly thankful for all that they’ve done and all that they continue to do,” Bob says of the cancer center team. At first, Bob’s treatment required the journey from Neah Bay to Sequim about every two weeks, before eventually being reduced to every month and now, every three months.
The Patient Navigation team at Olympic Medical Cancer Center has worked with Bob to apply for funding to cover most of the expenses for his medication.
“If it weren’t for the team at the Cancer Center, I don’t think we could have started my medication therapy due to the high cost,” Buckingham says.
The Patient Navigator program is designed to provide services and resources to help guide patients through the health care system so they can focus on treatment and well-being. Thanks to the generous support of the OMC Foundation, these resources include financial assistance, lodging and transportation assistance, social work, disease and treatment reference materials, community support, respite housing, additional health care support and more.
“This has made all the positive difference in the world for my family and I Having cancer is one thing, but having this amazing cancer care team has really meant life to me,” Bob says. “I wasn’t sure what we were going to do at that point in time When I found out the cost of the medication needed, I didn’t think I could meet those costs We were so relieved when the cancer care team helped apply for alternate resources to help with this financial burden ”
As his treatment progresses, Buckingham feels supported by Olympic Medical Cancer Center
“The cancer care center has made this journey much more tolerable. It is heartwarming to witness every team member treat me so well every step of the way,” he said
