Fund A Need: In Memory of Bill Littlejohn (Dec 18, 1946 - Dec 12, 2019 When Bill Littlejohn passed away in 2019, the OMC Foundation knew that it had to immediately create an award that would preserve his legacy.

Bill and his wife Esther gave mightily to benefit healthcare and to almost every charity on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Bill served on the Olympic Medical Center Foundation Board, and was the chair of the capital campaign for the expansion of the OMC Cancer Center, which raised $1.3 million ($800,000 over the original goal). He and Esther gave the initial gift of $100,000 that kicked off the successful campaign.

Therefore, the Foundation decided to establish award entitled The Community Cares Award in memory of Bill Littlejohn, with the criteria to recognize someone annually who has support healthcare and the community in general.

The first award will be presented at Festival of Trees next year.

Bill Littlejohn Cared About the North Olympic Peninsula Community Most people thought the OMC Foundation would be very fortunate to raise $500,000 for its capital campaign for the OMC Cancer Center. But not Bill Littlejohn. As the capital campaign chair for the cancer center expansion between 2017-2019, he set a fundraising goal of $1 million. That was exceeded by $300,000 (over $1 million for the expansion the rest for equipment in the new facility.

It was just another case of him and his wife Esther going above and beyond in the support of non-profit organizations on the North Olympic Peninsula, as their support of the community only begins there.

In addition to annual support that they provided for many events, they also: Committed to a five year pledge for the Boys & Girls Club Building Great Futures Campaign.

Supported the Peninsula College Nursing program at Peninsula College through a contribution to the Allied Health Capacity Building Effort and a five year pledge to the Bill and Esther Littlejohn Nursing Fund.

Created the William and Esther Littlejohn Foundation which grants scholarships annually to students attending college or vocational school.

They have supported the Sequim Museum and Arts Center, the Dungeness Health and Wellness Clinic, the Dungeness River Audubon Center, the North Olympic Land Trust, Captain Joseph House, the Sequim YMCA, the Sequim Irrigation Festival, the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, the Peninsula Friends of Animals, and several other organizations.

In addition, Bill served in leadership capacities for several other organizations, including: Served for 12 years as a hospital commissioner, including a stint as chairman Rotary President and Salmon Bake Committee Chair for many years President of the Chamber of Commerce and also on the committee for Citizen of the Year.

Fund A Need: COVID-19 Testing

Tonight we want to raise money that will pay for additional lab equipment that will provide another reliable source of testing for COVID-19 and other illnesses, such as influenza.

Coupled with a grant from The First Federal Community Foundation and First Federal, The Biofire system for OMC’s hospital laboratory will increase rapid COVID testing capabilities. It will be an important tool in OMC’s COVIDtesting toolkit, as it provides an additional avenue for rapid testing.

“Having the ability to utilize various testing tools gives us access to more testing resources, which is important in providing safe, quality care to our patients,” says Darryl Wolfe, chief executive officer. “The Biofire allows us to be more nimble if another type of testing resource becomes unavailable. We are incredibly appreciative to First Federal and the OMC Foundation for their support to help us obtain the Biofire at such a critical time.”

The Biofire system can also be used to test for several other illnesses, including Influenza A/B and other respiratory and gastro-intestinal maladies.

“OMC approached First Federal Community Foundation for support because our mission is to improve the quality of life in the communities First Federal serves,” said Norman Tonina, Chairman of the First Federal Community Foundation and Director of First Federal. “The COVID-19 testing equipment gives our Foundation the opportunity to do just that, supporting residents across the North Olympic Peninsula. We’re proud to contribute to this initiative, which increases the region’s rapid testing capabilities."
