Bill Gellor of Port Angeles is recognized this year with the Littlejohn Award for his outstanding contributions to health care and the community
Gellor, 75, is the fourth recipient of the award presented by the Olympic Medical Center Foundation. The award, created after the death of philanthropist Bill Littlejohn in 2019, honors those involved in Festival of Trees and other foundation events as well as lifetime achievement in volunteer work
“Bill Gellor was involved in the development of Festival of Trees for over 20 years, 13 as chair,” said Bruce Skinner, executive director of the OMC Foundation.
It was just another case of Bill LIttlejohn and his wife Esther going above and beyond in the support of nonprofit organizations on the North Olympic Peninsula. Bill and Esther gave the initial gift of $100,000 that kicked off the successful campaign
Most people thought the Olympic Medical Center Foundation would be very fortunate to raise $500,000 for its capital campaign for the Cancer Center.
“He took the entire week off from work, making sure that all the details were covered to make for a successful event,” Skinner added “You can count the number of people on one hand who have spent as much time on the event as Bill over the festival’s 34 year history.”
Gellor is a past president of the Foundation as well as of the Nor’Wester Rotary. He also co-chaired the Sonny Sixkiller fundraiser Several years ago, he was involved in the Port Angeles Jaycees and served as regional director for the Washington State Jaycees.
“I’ve always been involved in the community,” he said.
“It was something that was instilled in me when I was young,” said Gellor, past president of Gellor Insurance “
My dad was very involved in the community,” he continued. “When I first came to work, he stressed that you’ve got to give back.”
Gellor earlier this year sold Gellor Insurance Inc , which was begun by his grandfather, William Charles Gellor, in 1928 and continued by his father William B Gellor Gellor joined the business in 1971.

But not Bill Littlejohn – as the capital campaign chair for the cancer center expansion, he set a fundraising goal of $1 million That was exceeded by $300,000 (over $1 million for the expansion, the rest for equipment in the new facility)
It is just one of many things that Bill and Esther have done for the OMC Foundation. They have supported Festival of Trees, Red, Set, Go, Harvest of Hope and the Duck Derby, the latter for almost 30 years
When Bill passed away in 2019 the Foundation decided to establish an award in his honor. It annually recognizes people who have contributed to healthcare on the Peninsula and to the community in general.
. But their support of the community only begins there On an annual basis, Bill and Esther have supported the Boys and Girls Club, the Peninsula College Nursing program, Sequim Museum and Arts Center, the Dungeness Health and Wellness Clinic, the Dungeness River Audubon Center, the North Olympic Land Trust, Captain Joseph House, the Sequim YMCA, the Sequim Irrigation Festival, the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, the Peninsula Friends of Animals, and several other organizations. They also have created a scholarship fund for students who attend college or vocational school.
“My first job for my dad was cleaning stuff up underneath our building,” Gellor said.
Upon graduating from Seattle University, he worked for the company as an insurance agent, becoming a partner in 1972 or ’73 He became president of the company after his father died unexpectedly in 1979.
The third-generation business established offices in Port Angeles, Sequim and Poulsbo and served clients in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Arizona
Gellor sold to Darren Doty and is involved in the transition of the longtime business, now known as Doty Fryer Gellor Insurance. The parent company is All Century Insurance and Financial Services, Inc.
Gellor is married to Sue and the couple has a daughter, Molly Smith, and a son, Bill G Gellor, who works as a first responder on a fire helicopter crew in California.
Gellor is winding down now, he said, aiming to work perhaps three days a week in the firm.
“I have no officer positon. The joke I made with the owner is that I’m just one of the minions now,” he said
The transition frees him to focus purely on what he most enjoys, “working with people and solving their problems.”
“It’s what I do, who I am,” he said.
Once the business transition is complete, he isn’t sure what he will do with his free time – except that he plans to rev up his community volunteer activities.
“You’ve got to be a part of the community. You’ve got to give back,” he said. “If you can’t give financially, you give back time.
“You have to have a successful community to have a successful business,” he added.
Prior recipients of the award are Bill and Kay Hermann in 2021, Sherry Phillips in 2022 and Edna Peterson in 2023.

We are raising money for the scholarship program to help increase the number of healthcare workers in Clallam County, and to allow current OMC employees to further their education.
