We�come to our 14th Annual Red, Set, Go Event!

It is hard for me to believe that we have been at this for 14 years since our inaugural Red, Set, Go! luncheon in 2008.

Through this annual event, we have educated our community about the terrible effects of heart and vascular disease. Unfortunately, in spite of our progress, heart disease remains the leading killer of women – and men – every year in this country.

The Red, Set, Go! luncheon produced by Olympic Medical Center Foundation and presented by Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe aims to raise awareness.

In addition, this event has had a very tangible effect on the care of our residents with heart disease.

We have raised $590,000 during the past 13 years!

With this money, you have funded a new nuclear cardiology camera for cardiac stress testing, new treadmills and other equipment for our cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs, automatic defibrillator units and heart monitoring devices.

Olympic Medical Heart Center provides specialized cardiac stress testing, echocardiography, heart rhythm monitoring, pacemaker and other device services, and cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation in both Sequim and Port Angeles.

We have expanded our technical staff in many areas in the last few years as demand increases.

On staff, we have three cardiologists, a cardiac nurse practitioner and an internal medicine physician with a pacemaker and device focus.

Keynote Spea�ers DR. A. DILUSHA WILLIAM practices cardiac electrophysiology at Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute. He specializes in the patient-centered, multidisciplinary management of cardiac arrhythmias, and is board certified in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

DR. KARA KURTZ URNES is one of our local cardiologists at OMC and is the only female cardiologist in Clallam County. She is the medical director of Olympic Medical Heart Center and Olympic Medical Physicians Specialty Clinic, and is board certified in cardiology, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography.

He is dedicated to improving outcomes by leveraging advances in mapping and catheter ablation, pacemaker and defibrillator technology, and medical therapy.

A graduate of Stanford University, she attended medical school at the University of Utah and did her Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Washington.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he completed a Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

She has been a regular presenter at this event in the past and has been a bronze sponsor every year.

From the Beating Heart of Healing

E

ach attendee at today’s luncheon received a copy of the book of poetry by Dr. Jan Thatcher Adams, The Beating Heart of Healing.

She was blessed to have a 47-year career in medicine, 27 years in family medicine, practicing womb to tomb needs, and delivering over 3,000 babies. That was followed by 20 years as a emergency room and hospitalist physician, closing out her career at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles. She is retired in Port Angeles with her husband and three cats. She may be contacted at jantadams@aol.com.

Despite a busy practice, Dr. Jan squeezed in time to create hundreds of published articles covering holistic medicine and mind/body/spirit issues. Throughout her writing career, she has also enjoyed story telling. Each of the mini-stories in The Beating Heart of Healing was gifted to her as the jewels of life experienced in the doctor/patient connection of healing.

Previous books include Football Wife: Coming of Age with the NFL as Mrs. Karl Kassulke, and inclusion in three anthologies, In the Words of Olympic Peninsula Authors Volumes 1, 2 and 3, all available on Amazon.

Football Wife chronicles how Jan met football hero Karl as a freshman at Drake University in an era when celebrities could do no wrong. While Jan completed her schooling and went on to medical school and had two sons, Karl excelled at pro football with the Minnesota Vikings. He was known for his ferocious hitting and multiple concussions piled on. Before long, a good man began to do bad things, and a fairy tale marriage unraveled. The book is very current with issues such as alcoholism, codependency, drug abuse, cult of celebrity, and especially Chronic Traumatic Encphalopathy (CTE).

Throughout her career, she also pursued humanitarian goals – clowning in many countries and refugee camps with Dr. Patch Adams, and providing medical care to unserved multitudes in many countries, including Haiti, Argentina and Nepal. She developed and managed a charity and art gallery for the benefit of Russian orphans.

Besides writing, she has also enjoyed music and art. Pieces of her art are up for auction today. She has also served 50 years as a church organist.
