COMMUNITY AWARD HONORS LONGTIME OMC SUPPORTER For three decades Bill and Esther Littlejohn and Bill and Kay Hermann have attended the OMC Foundation Festival of Trees and purchased many trees while actively engaging in a friendly bidding competition.

When Bill Littlejohn, the OMC Foundation president and chair of the OMC Cancer Center capital campaign, passed away in December of 2019, the Foundation decided to set up an award in his honor – the Littlejohn Award In memory of Bill Littlejohn – recognizing people who have contributed to health care on the Peninsula and to the community in general.

Therefore, it is only fitting that the first recipients of the award are the Hermanns.

“Esther and I both like the same kinds of trees, so often we would find ourselves trying to get the same ones during the auction,” Kay said. “That drove up the price, but in the end, we all knew that it was going to benefit a great cause.”

And that’s just what the Hermanns have done – they’ve given to several good causes, supporting many community charities, schools and organizations for more than 50 years.

“We’ve always believed in giving back to the community,” Bill said. “And we strongly think that since the people of the North Olympic Peninsula have supported local businesses that we should support their organizations.”

As the owners of several businesses, including Hermann Brothers Logging in Port Angeles, they have been involved in all Olympic Medical Center Foundation events, especially Festival of Trees. They have sponsored, designed and purchased many trees over the years, and have inspired their family to become involved in the event.

“It’s been an incredible event for us. We like to support a cause and have fun while we’re doing it,” Kay said.

They’ve also supported many other community activities, including a variety of youth, school, church and rodeo events. Over the years, the Hermanns have been touched by what the Foundation has done for the community. They have had several friends who have had medical treatment because of donations by the Foundation to Olympic Medical Center. Many can get the treatment locally instead of having to go all the way to Seattle.

“We wish that the community had more people like Bill and Kay Hermann,” said OMC Foundation President Sherry Phillips. “The Olympic Peninsula is a better place because of all that they have done, both professionally and philanthropically.”

THE LITTLEJOHN LEGACY It was just another case of him and his wife Esther going above and beyond in the support of nonprofit organizations on the North Olympic Peninsula. Bill and Esther gave the initial gift of $100,000 that kicked off the successful campaign.

Most people thought the Olympic Medical Center Foundation would be very fortunate to raise $500,000 for its capital campaign for the Cancer Center.

But not Bill Littlejohn – as the capital campaign chair for the cancer center expansion, he set a fundraising goal of $1 million. That was exceeded by $300,000 (over $1 million for the expansion, the rest for equipment in the new facility).

It is just one of many things that Bill and Esther have done for the OMC Foundation.

They have supported Festival of Trees, Red, Set, Go, Harvest of Hope and the Duck Derby, the latter for almost 30 years.

But their support of the community only begins there. On an annual basis, Bill and Esther have supported the Boys and Girls Club, the Peninsula College Nursing program, Sequim Museum and Arts Center, the Dungeness Health and Wellness Clinic, the Dungeness River Audubon Center, the North Olympic Land Trust, Captain Joseph House, the Sequim YMCA, the Sequim Irrigation Festival, the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, the Peninsula Friends of Animals, and several other organizations.

They also have created a scholarship fund for students who attend college or vocational school.

IN MEMORY OF ONE OF FESTIVAL OF TREES GREATEST SUPPORTERS, KURT GRINNELL Almost every year at Festival of Trees, Kurt Grinnell raised his bid card to purchase trees for the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe. Tragically, the long-time tribal leader passed away April 20 in an automobile accident, shocking many on the North Olympic Peninsula.

At the Festival of Trees Gala on Friday, Nov. 26, the OMC Foundation is going to honor Kurt, who was not only a tremendous supporter of his tribe, but for the entire North Olympic Peninsula community. Kurt was a 1982 graduate of Port Angeles High School and attended Haskell Indian Nations University and the University of Washington.

He deeply cared about the educational opportunities of the Jamestown youth.

The 17-year council member led the tribe’s revival of oyster farming and oysterseed production, pioneered its hatchery operations, and piloted its overall aquaculture efforts.

“This loss had a huge impact on our community,” Tribal Chairman W. Ron Allen said. “Kurt was deeply deep-rooted in the tribe’s cultural and traditional ways.”

Grinnell was family-driven and is survived by his father, Fred Grinnell, and his mother, Elaine, an internationally renowned storyteller and S’Klallam language speaker; his wife Terri; and daughters Lori Greninger and Jaiden Bosick. He is also survived by his sister Julie Borde; a brother, Jack Grinnell; and three grandsons.
