Typology as an Analytical Tool.

I’m currently working as a Graduate Student Researcher with the Waterloo research project, ‘The Long-Term Costs of the Rapid Construction of Multi-Unit Residential Buildings in Waterloo Region’ for 13 months which is integrated into my thesis research. Through this project, we are analyzing 18 case studies across the Waterloo Region to assess a ‘broader’ scope of Housing Quality, as per the United Nation’s ‘Human Right to Housing’. This analysis intends to create a new set of ‘Healthy Housing Standards’ that addresses a large criteria of should be adequate.

My thesis at its core is a granular framework proposing a method for analyzing the ‘quality’ of multi-unit residential building units through a thorough understanding of their ‘qualities’. These qualities are both quantitative and qualitative data sets that consist of variables in relation to the spatial organization and typological levels of the dwellings.

The Zonal Diagram looks at zones and spaces; The division of the dwelling into a grid of spaces illustrates the amount of subdivision of the space within the dwelling through both hard & soft edges. The hatches illustrate daylight adjacency diagrammatically to understand how far the central node of a space is from a light source. Additionally, a dichotomy of enclosed and continuous spaces are indicated through a purple hatch and offset dashed line respectively. These three aspects describe the experiential qualities of the existing in one of these subdivisions that make up the ‘zones’ of the dwelling.

The Greenhouse is an environmental school for Rare Charitable Research Reserve. The project is proposed to sit on existing part of Rare land, where there Rare has existing garden plots, greenhouses, two trails called the Pawpaw Parade trail and the Butterfly Loop, a Moon garden and North House, an old experimental artist & residence space, which is to be demolished. The most drastic change made to the site is the removal of the existing greenhouses and their integration into the building massing.

To connect the proposed building to the site, a meandering main boardwalk called the ‘PATH’ was created. It is meant to create permanence and placemaking, non-destructively, ensuring that students, volunteers and visitors alike are always given a guiding compass to help navigate the site and are never ‘too far from the path. The meandering of the ‘PATH’ allows for the board walk to be graded to an accessible grade. The ‘PATH’ connects the road leading from the parking lot into the building, providing accessibility and mobility/transport for the farmer’s market.

The building meets the path through a large garage door opening which allows for the foyer to become a pavilion space and opens up the courtyard to become part of the foyer. This also helps for Farmer’s market events to allow for buzz and people to congregate and move freely between the gardens, the buildings, the market and the rest of the site. The Farmer’s Market stalls are located on the lower floor and alongside the ‘PATH’. Slightly further down from the courtyard area is a fire-pit and outdoor amphitheater that will act as an outdoor classroom for the environmental school.

Regular grid and modest structural spans allow for the use of Point-Supported CLT Roof and Floor panels.

Farmer’s Market Stalls are built into the volume beneath the Main Floor and are thermally insulated from the rest of the building. These stalls help to activate the courtyard and help transform the Greenhouse School into a building capable of hosting outdoor events and creating community space.

Winter Gardens act as thermal buffer space in winter, averaging 10-15° C compared to an average outdoor air temperature of (-9° to -2°C)

MPR is subdivided into two parts: Interior and Winter Garden. The space is fully convertible, providing an event space with tons of daylight and double the floor space in summer and shoulder seasons.

Operable Casement windows are placed predominately on the North-South axis, allowing for wind to flow through the entire building.

The majority of the construction materials for this project are lumber products. These include Cross-laminated Timber Structural Walls, Cross-laminated Timber Roof/Floor Panels, Dimensional Lumber, Plywood, Wooden Siding, Wood Fiber Insulation (Rigid & Loose), Glulam Columns & Beams. One of the major benefits of lumber products is sequestration associated with bio-genic materials.

Terraced garden plots step down the sloped courtyard, extending the growing from the Greenhouse out into the community space.

Interior walls use light framing to conserve material and provide more insulation through the cavity.

A thermal mass in the greenhouse was one of the passive strategies essential to the proposed passive greenhouse function.

However, most materials capable of acting as thermal masses have a high embodied carbon footprint. The selection of reclaimed brick, mitigates the overall carbon footprint of the thermal mass used in the project.

Merging the Greenhouse and Circulation volumes together to create a circulation experience filled with greenery and life, whilst increasing the program footprint for both respectively.

Double wythe brick veneer acts as a thermal mass, positioned exclusively on southern facades to maximize the efficacy.

Northern Diffused Lighting

Windows let in low-angle winter sun to allow winter solar heat gain.

N N Water collected from the roof drains into cisterns placed below the ramps or below grade. Placing the cistern below grade underneath the greenhouses specifically helps with heat capture and storage in the greenhouses’ due to the water’s high capability as a thermal mass.

“Juxtapose” emerges from a thorough exploration of the site and its surrounding conditions, transcending traditional boundaries and addressing connectivity challenges. The project revolves around negotiating design dualities, primarily expressed through a delicate balance between preserving the historical industrial identity (ex Mira Lanza building, Gasometro, and nearby artifacts) and introducing a modern, ‘grafted’ massing. The grafted residential massing seamlessly merges with the industrial heritage, utilizing the Ex Mira Lanza building as a focal point. The introduction of stairwells with polycarbonate facades not only contributes to a sleek aesthetic but also serves as a source of light, ensuring heat resistance and visual uniformity. The project is integrated into a performing theatre on the south-east of the site.

Juxtapose prioritizes the community’s need for green spaces. Maximizing the incorporation of park areas, the project also links the vibrant urban activity of the Via Marconi into the site, establishing a grand, sloped entry leading to the sub-grade levels of the park. A multi-level urban public space, nestled on the second level of community center buildings, connects the residential buildings through a system of elevated walkways, creating a seamless passage through the site to the river.

Corridor.

Corridor is an modular-mixed use adaptation of the MAT-housing typology to create a dense midrise housing solution that provides affordable housing to a range of income brackets. Using shipping containers as a structural material as well as cladding, Corridor creates an aggregated landscape of shipping containers on the top of a bustling retail podium providing a vibrance and life to the area as well as balancing public and semi-private spaces to create different conditions of the community and ‘togetherness’. The project is named Corridor because the of significant incision through the site, the boldest gesture of the project; the street running through the site is meant to heavily urbanised, with street ramping, textured paving, narrower lanes and multiple pedestrian crosswalks.

TBL Living is a 5-story mixed-use building proposed to be built adjacent to TBL Cinema and just southwest of Hermitage Mall. On the ground floor, there is a strip mall similar to that of Hermitage Mall. There are 17 double-height commercial unit spaces that have removable walls in between them, which allows commercial vendors to purchase as many commercial units as they require. Double-height spaces are required for certain store specifications and for extra storage via mezzanine floor that some vendors may require.

Remnants of process work are often intentionally left on the page as a visual recollection of each mental choice we make to arrive at the present state. The different iterations we encounter—construction guidelines, and markups from peers and professors—together serve as accumulated evidence of the evolving dialogue between intention and discovery. The old becomes the blueprint of the new, the layering manifesting itself on the paper as its own analogue aesthetic.

The notes follow a strict graphic convention which helps define the quality, intensity, and temporality of each sense. Each sensory category is defined by a different “note” symbol and colour. The distinctions of colour and shape preserve graphic clarity of the senses and legibility for readers regardless of visual ability. Shapes are important to maintain clarity in the absence of colour and have the possibility of being physically embossed. The quality of a sense is determined by a binary within drawing, either an outlined or filled note, dividing the sensory extremes without bias. Three sizes of notes denote sensory intensity: the largest graphically signifies the most intense experience and is more visually prominent, whereas the smallest notes are deemphasized to convey lower intensity. as long as I can remember. Even the item I chose at my dol was a pencil—a slim, cylindrical object made of wood with a thin graphite core embedded in its body.1

typically including cash, a pencil, sports equipment, etc. Families and friends gather for this festive event, marked by traditional attire, food, and blessings.

TRUTH exists in both hand-drafted and digital drawings, the former favouring experiential truths and the latter, empirical truths. As industry values have shifted, construction documents have transitioned from being hand-drafted to digitally produced. Architects spread over drafting boards using pencils and T-squares to draw feel like a distant tale.

I’m not anomalous in using the pencil as my main brainstorming tool in architectural practice. However, it falls to the wayside once an idea needs to be further developed. Despite this, my main struggle with designing in Rhino, or any similar CAD software, has been about speed. I’m not talking about the production of drawings, but the speed at which an idea develops from conceptual formation to actualization. The bodily reaction time of drawing a line on paper is simply faster than having to click on the Command tab, type “line”, then click to indicate its length, then finally click to complete the mark.

Design excellence in accessible design should accommodate the needs of all users with dignity, ease, and comfort. The Toronto Accessibility Design Guidelines states that “accessible and universal design principles prevents and removes barriers for everyone — so that dignity and independence can be sustained without impediment.”1 The suggestion that designing an accessible environment involves the “removal of barriers” implies that the normative design process inherently includes them.

Furthermore, it should lend attention to those who deal with varying degrees of deafness, blindness, and neurodivergence who are less represented in code requirements. Accessible design should move beyond removing barriers to begin an investigation of user needs in order to enhance the function, comfort, and delight for all. The intent of this sensory notation is to develop a system and process through which designers can anticipate, sequence, and analyze the sensory and physical experiences of diverse users. In considering sensory needs as a distinct design consideration, we can develop more sophisticated sensory experiences that improve the accessibility of architectural designs.

It’s always seemed too fluid and amorphous to grasp.

I have always felt more internally contradicting than comprehensive. From this aimless drift through identity emerges continual noise, the pull to an endless constellation of interests, experiences and ideas, all jostling to dictate who I am.

As non-binary, I fail to ground myself in a particular gender. As agnostic, I fail to adhere to a particular religion. I have a Polish last name, but nearly all of that cultural lineage was erased or assimilated following my grandfathers’ immigration to Canada.

I struggle to see my values reflected in the actions of my nation.

My digital identity is not mine, or not the entirety of it. I struggle to distinguish where I start and where “it” begins. I create and wear sub-identities, usernames, and pseudonyms without second thought. I have access to more information than one could ever hope to know, let alone understand. I am able to explore new interests, new media, new thoughts and beliefs: my own and others. More importantly, I am able to critique, unpack, and in some instances, unlearn past thoughts, and beliefs.

Depicted are the connections, the overlaps, the cracks, the fragments and the excess of involuntary inputs I am subject to daily. Part poem, part collage, part mosaic, part map. Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s love story was among the greatest of their time—their undeniable attraction grew exponentially as they continued to be together.

John soon became influenced by Yoko, reflecting her beliefs in his music and political/social decisions. They were intertwined.

Our goal was to translate this inseparability into a chair that would conceptually and physically accommodate two bodies in one form— representing their inseparable relationship. By studying the positions of their bodies in their iconic poses, we produced numerous design sketches, and an organic form was proposed to illustrate their amorphous relationship. The rhythm of their bodies intertwined with each other is our physical depiction of their amorphous lives and co-dependent relationship.

The organic shape we envisioned posed feasibility challenges. Our initial

design required a great amount of plywood material and expertise we did not have with the reciprocating saw and sander to get a smooth finish. The wood material requirement lent itself intrinsically to the construction of rigid geometric forms, so a fluid form posed a challenge for design representation, construction, cost, and structural analysis.

Could I just sit here today and never have to leave? My connecting train is announced. I rise with my half-empty cup, following the others onto the

Instantly, I regret it, not just my choice but also the missed opportunity to stretch the moment into a conversation.

I glance back at the gentle raindrops tapping against the windowpanes, while her reflection moves away, veiled in the soft glow. The cooks are busy behind the counter, making 190

tinations on time. They are in a hurry, but I walk sleepily, as I am now drifting in downtime. The unusual glitch in my journey is a 22-minute wait for the connecting train.

It is beginning to rain. Drawn by the pattering of droplets against the glass—a sof t, ambient reminder of the physical, I approach the glass screen and sit in quiet admiration of the shifting sky.

The weight of waiting settles in, nudging me toward the warmth of a café just beyond the station’s hum. Someone drops in to take orders, others beside me are still deciding.

The waitress walks towards me with a hint of a smile.

She offers me a menu, and I

As this was our last project within undergraduate studies, we were motivated to face the challenge and prove its possibility.

An “organic form” was a start, but what that form would necessitate was our biggest hurdle. Using an underlay of standard chair heights, we used Rhino to iterate. Initially, our design consisted of stacked plywood sheets.

Later, adjusting our design to a vertical assembly allowed us to break up our organic mass into various wood fins. By slicing our form and separating each resulting wood fin with small spacers, the fabric could weave into the chair and reduce the amount of wood needed. This fabric acted as a cushion for the user and represented the weaving of their lives. Three steel rods connected the alternating fins and spacers like spines, making disassembly possible so that the chair’s weight wasn’t an issue for transportation.

I look at the new passengers sitting around me, talking amongst themselves, talking of other things. Some scroll on as I look, others sleep. I pretend to dream, searching the grid for something. I’m not sure what, maybe just a feeling, a connection, however faint, however it comes. I bear no judgment. It is unnatural, I know, to hope for serendipity so often. But I can’t stop myself from turning to the glass box 191
