The boutique, whose interior matches the downtown vibe while meshing with Goodwill’s message of reusing and repurposing items, has a storeroom that isn’t overcrowded with musty items, as some might assume. The room is made up of islands of displays, one featuring bright red, another black, and yet another with a collection of old evening bags.

The wall of shoes features one pair with what would have to be seven-inch heels. On the wall hangs an old cruiser bike, while a unicycle sits on a shelf close by. All items are already priced with tags. Goodwill Reserve has hats, of course, and jewelry (gaudy and simple alike) along with a few household items such as trendy lamps, quite a few retro clocks and one incredible oven with a pull-out stovetop—all priced very reasonably. One corner of the store is dedicated to wedding dresses. Large

floor-to-ceiling mirrors on an elevated platform set the area apart, and the rack is just stuffed with wedding gowns old and new, all in good shape. The store gets new shipments in every day.

“We pull almost all the wedding dresses from the other stores,” said Randy Parks, Vice President of Retail for Goodwill. “How cool is it to get a repurposed dress in the Old Market?”

Parks first visited a Goodwill Reserve store in Portland, Ore., six years ago. He says it’s something he’s had in mind for Omaha since then.

The organization, whose primary focus is job training and employment services, found the spot it currently occupies and renovated it using as many recycled materials as possible.

Said Parks: “Our triple bottom line is profit, people, planet. All the money [made from] the stores goes to the programs.”

Participants in Goodwill’s programs receive training in customer service. Programs also offer career coaching and opportunities for special needs populations and for highschool-age students. The organization served 1,200 people in the Omaha area in 2010, 300 of which found permanent employment.

“We were the original recycler,” exclaimed Parks, who then said that probably wasn’t entirely true but that repurposing, reusing and recycling have always been primary goals of the organization. “Very little of what we get [in donations] ends up in a landfill,” said Parks. “We sell clothing with rips, we sell clothing by the pound to a company that makes industrial shop cloths, and we’ve even got a guy who will buy single shoes.”

T

he idea for an exhibit of flood scene photos came to Linda Meigs as she walked beneath the Mormon Bridge to view the engorged Missouri River. “Everybody had cameras. It was almost like a traffic jam.”

Her exhibit idea — “Flood Waters 2011, Documenting History into Art: The 2011 Missouri River Flood” — opens at the Florence Mill Art Loft Gallery on Sept. 1. Winning entries from amateur photographers are displayed and awarded prizes.

Meigs, an artist has spent 13 years restoring the 165-year-old mill with her husband, John. Built in 1846 by Brigham Young as the Mormon Winter Quarters Mill, its original timbers are still visible.

Shutter-happy flood watchers were out in droves to capture images of the rowdy Missouri River. Three of those amateur photographers share their viewpoints:

A two-day tour of the Missouri River from Sioux City to Hamburg, Iowa, stunned Scott McCampbell with the flood’s sheer size. “I was awestruck. You look at it and say, ‘How could that even happen?’”

He grabbed his camera and set out to document the historic flood. At the Ft. Calhoun nuclear power plant, a security guard shooed him away. At the Lewis & Clark Monument, about 25 other amateur photographers were jockeying for a high view of the river.

They were all there to record history. “This is the kind of event I don’t think I’ll ever see happen again,” McCampbell said.

lawn were a sign that the river was out of its banks.

She says images of people staring at the river helped her record a moment in history by showing what people were wearing and how they looked.

Four trips to the river before access was closed were spent with many other photographers. But there was not much socializing.

“Photographers are not the chattiest, because they’re focused on taking pictures,” she laughs.

“It is awesome to see the power of nature, the beauty of it.”

The first clue Jenni Schlossman had that the Missouri River flooding was affecting her Ponca Hills neighborhood was the oodles of bugs and oddly obese tree frogs.

As an art historian, she wanted to send a message with her photos of the power and beauty of the river and nature, as well as the human engineering of the bridge.

Her photos were taken from beneath the Mormon Bridge where, Schlossman said, she was not alone. “There were always people by the bridge taking pictures.”

Culinary CWS Success TD Ameritrade chef Dayanny De La Cruz’s menu of mostly non-traditional ballpark fare adds a new flavor to the College World Series story by Corey Ross | photos by minorwhitestudios.com

T

he anticipation felt by fans for the first batter to step to the plate at the new TD Ameritrade Park for its first CWS was the equivalent of how ballpark Executive Chef Dayanny De La Cruz felt for the stadium’s concession stands to have their first customers.

What awaited a crowd of 24,000 per game was a menu loaded with more than the traditional hamburgers, pizza and ice cream of the old CWS. The new CWS offerings featured everything from fresh food items and a gluten-free menu to such items as a Reuben sausage — a twist on Omaha’s traditional sandwich — and Big Cheese Rip N Dip, a giant serving of garlic bread meant to be dipped in marinara sauce and shared.

De La Cruz says the sellout crowds proved to have a big appetite for all of it.

“It was an amazing experience having a new stadium,” she says.“The expectations were high, but we pushed through and it was a big success. It has been an amazing journey.”

The 500 Rip N Dips sold and the 400 pounds of Reuben sausage consumed were both Levy Restaurant company records, De La Cruz says.

Fans are used to high-calorie fare at the ballpark, but De La Cruz says the non-traditional fresh fare items also sold well. Fans purchased 30,000 natural wraps, along with fruit and veggie cups from the stadium’s Fresh Eats cart, one of several themed carts located throughout the stadium.

Perhaps her most touching CWS moment, she says, came from a comment by a fan visiting the gluten-free cart to purchase a gluten-free hot dog.

Highlights of the Concessions Menu Clubhouse Grill: This stand is the go-to spot for classic ballpark fare and sports favorites with new twists. Offerings include the footlong Reuben sausage, grilled Buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese slaw, and “Bases Loaded” fries topped with chili, cheese, sour cream, green onions.

Fresh Eats: The spot for lighter fare, this stand offers dishes such as the grilled vegetable wrap, vegetable chop salad, fruta cup, veg out cup with hummus, and an assortment of gluten-free snacks and beer.

“A father told me it was the first time he was able to take his son to the park and have a hot dog with him,” she says.

That story is a microcosm, she says, of what the expanded menu did for the CWS experience.

“I feel like we have reached so many people and have been able to expand the ballpark experience for them,” she says.

Prior to coming to Omaha, De La Cruz worked for the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild. She’s originally from Grand Rapids, Mich., and is a culinary graduate of Grand Rapids Community College with a master’s degree in hospitality management from Grand Valley State University.

“I’m very proud to have my beginnings at a community college,” De La Cruz says.

She’s used to serving large crowds. Doing it twice a day was the challenge, she says. She worked 14 1/2-hour days, starting at 5:30 a.m., and oversaw a staff of 65 to 80.

She’s already preparing for next year’s series by processing feedback from this year’s event, such as an email from a woman in the suites who was highly complimentary of the stadium’s infused waters, “Aguas Frescas.”

“We’re catering to the city of Omaha, but we’re also the hostess of the CWS. We have our ears open for all kinds of feedback — what they’d like to see more, what was their favorite thing,” she says. “The CWS is our big baby, and we need to nurture it to make it a larger success.”

De La Cruz was looking forward to catering to a more adult crowd for the Red Sky Music Festival in July. Also being a football fan, she is especially excited to serve large crowds for the Omaha Nighthawks games this fall.

“It’s a football town,” she says. “I hope people come with a huge appetite for football — and of course for the food. We’ll be ready.” readonlinenow.com

A

bright shade of green — as vibrant as the lime and cilantro that infuse a steaming bowl of pho — adds a splash of color. Wood-panel accent walls — in a rich, dark shade of brown like the hoisin-peanut dipping sauce that accompanies a plate of fresh spring rolls — lend a touch of warmth to the sleek, modern space.

Saigon Surface has spiced up downtown Omaha’s dining scene with a southeast Asian flair since opening in late May at 324 S. 14th St., adjacent to The Paxton. It differs from many local Asian eateries, however, with an atmosphere that’s more edgy than ethnic.

Boasting a clean, modern design, Saigon Surface features sleek gray-and-white booths in a variety of seating arrangements for couples and larger groups of diners. Contemporary pendant lights, simple yet stylish wood-and-metal chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows by the entrance create an airy, inviting feel.

The design was inspired by the look and feel of an Apple retail store, says owner Tu Nguyen. He wanted to create a space that mirrored the sleek, straight lines of Apple products.

“It’s clean and modern, but not to a point where it feels cold,” Nguyen, 33, says of the restaurant.

The menu features a small yet diverse selection of

appetizers, salads, soups and entrees, including such Vietnamese classics as vermicelli-style bowls and pho (a rice noodle soup). Entrees range from $10-$15. Drinks include Asian-inspired cocktails prepared with homemade simple syrups infused with fresh ginger and lemongrass.

Nguyen’s mother is the restaurant’s executive chef, and his sister serves as manager. The family hopes to open three to five additional Saigon Surface locations in the region over the next five years.

In addition to the interior design, the 70-seat eatery sets itself apart with its use of technology. Diners can use iPads supplied by the staff to surf the web, check email, snap photos, and even select the music playing over the sound system. Each one has a built-in tracking device to deter thefts.

Nguyen (pronounced “win”) has been working on an iPad application that will allow customers to view the menu, rate the food, and leave comments about their experience. The concept, he says, allows the staff to gain real-time data and customer feedback in a faster, easier and more efficient manner than filling out a comment card or taking an online survey at home.

Given his background, it’s no surprise that the restaurant has a techie element. Nguyen’s main job is chief technology officer at DocLanding. The Omaha-based company, which he co-founded, is an online document management provider.

Years ago, while working at his parents’ business, Saigon Restaurant near 120th and West Center Road, Nguyen developed a handheld order-taking pad that allowed English-speaking waiters to enter orders into the device for translation into the chef ’s native Vietnamese. His creation earned Nguyen first place — and a $25,000 prize — at Microsoft’s Imagine Cup competition in 2003.

“I love entrepreneurship. I love to create,” he says. “Restaurants happen to be a natural fit.”

There’s No Place Like Downtown Omaha Story by the Omaha Downtown Improvement District Omaha is a great city with a lot to offer in every corner of our community; however, there is no place like downtown Omaha.

I’m not just talking about the wide variety of outstanding bars, restaurants, hotels, art galleries, parks, shops, event venues, housing and services that people have come to know, love and enjoy on a daily basis. I’m talking about those AND the numerous events, special occasions, conventions, festivals, parades and more that happen regularly that makes downtown Omaha the place to be.

Take the four weeks before the College World Series for example. Just a sampling of the events downtown hosted include: the Summer Arts Festival, Taste of Omaha, the weekly Farmer’s Market, the Santa Lucia Festival & Parade, the State High School Soccer Tournament, the Omaha Children’s Museum Parade, the Omaha Heritage Festival & Parade, Wicked at the Orpheum Theater, high school and college graduations, Creighton baseball at TD Ameritrade Park, and a scattering of events at the CenturyLink Center and downtown hotels.

I challenge you to find another part of our city, state or region that could host all of those events and activities, and do it as well as the downtown community.

So when somebody wants to argue that there is nothing to do in Omaha, or that going downtown is a hassle, remember to tell them that there is always something going on in downtown Omaha.

A

majestic French cathedral…a sidewalk café in Paris…a cobweb-filled old theater in Corning, Iowa…the shops in Old Market…the governor’s residence in Lincoln.

There’s something about Lynda Tygart’s photographs that elicits stares—partly out of admiration for the dream-like, serene quality of her images and partly out of disbelief that they are, indeed, photos and not fine paintings, charcoal drawings or pencil etchings.

Her hand-painted prints and smaller, inked images known as bromoils have won acclaim throughout Europe and North America. Not bad for someone who struggled in art class.

“I’m a lousy painter. The results were miserable,” admits the Owatonna, Minn., native. Then a photography class unleashed her inner artist.

“They couldn’t drag me out of the darkroom. I loved it,” Tygart remembers.“That told me something.”

That “something” had to wait as Tygart followed a more practical path to financial stability. Armed with a business degree, she carved out a long and highly successful career as a corporate financial advisor. It wasn’t until she moved to Omaha five years ago that Tygart re-invented herself. Her hobby, photography, became her livelihood.

From her studio and darkroom inside her Deer Creek home, Tygart developed poster-size prints of architectural images (her subject of choice) that she had snapped in Europe and in her adopted home of Omaha. She then took a brush and highlighted certain areas of the picture with color.

Tygart’s use of an infrared lens on other shots added a stormy, scary look to the black-and-white photos and gave the impression of a charcoal drawing. But the technique that wowed members of

the Old Market Artists Gallery was Tygart’s use of bromoils.

“Bromoil is a photographic process that reached a peak in 1920s Europe and is rarely used today,” explains Tygart. “I like to think of it as the original Photoshop.”

To explain bromoils is as labor-intensive as the process itself.

Simply put, Tygart starts out with a black-and-white photo printed on paper coated with gelatin. She then bathes the print in a chemical mixture that bleaches out all the black and gray areas. The result is a “ghost” image of the photograph. Tygart takes a brush and starts laying down very thin layers of a greasy ink, drawing and highlighting — in effect, manipulating the image. The result is a very soft, pencil-etching quality of the original photograph.

“A bromoilist has to know when to walk away from tinkering with the picture,” Tygart explains.“If you tear the gelatin, the picture is ruined. And it takes days to create one bromoil.”

The uniqueness and rarity of bromoils gave Tygart entrée to the governor’s mansion. Her picture of the residence hangs permanently in Lincoln. Tygart’s work appears on the front cover of the Old Market Directory and can be found at several area galleries and the Durham Museum gift store.

Judging from the way her artwork has been received and the friendships she has formed here in Omaha, Tygart easily sees herself staying.

“This is where I decided to become an artist. It’s been a real exciting move for me.”

aving lived in the Old Market for 25 years, Bonnie Leonhardt has become quite a fixture in the area. Even if you don’t recognize the successful NP Dodge Real Estate agent’s name, if you frequent the Market, you’d probably recognize her face and her bubbly personality.

“It’s funny because we’ve always called it the ‘Old Market Thing’… when you tell somebody who someone is and then say,‘Well, you’d know them if you saw ‘em.’”

As a real estate agent, Leonhardt is the perfect representative for the city of Omaha.“I love having new people come in [to town] and being able to take them around…I take them everywhere!” she says. From the suburban neighborhoods out west, to the little mercados of south Omaha, to the Love Jazz Museum on North 24th street, Leonhardt wants to show newbies all that the “Big O” has to offer. “If somebody says they don’t have anything to do in Omaha, it’s because they can’t read!”

While proud of her adopted city, her heart belongs to the Old Market. The East Moline, Ill., native had commuted between Omaha and Chicago for several years while in her previous job as a rep for Pitney Bowes. “That was my dream job!” she says. The entire family was scheduled to move to Chicago. However, after selling their home in west Omaha for the move, her husband ended up buying his own business in town. The result: he and the couple’s high school-age daughters moved into an apartment in the Old Market while Leonhardt traveled between the cities. “He was just wonderful,” she beems. “To give up the job you love and the city you love for the family you love. That’s when I moved back to Omaha for the [final] time.”

Their first place in the Old Market was in the New Idea building and they rented from Emil Vohoska, one of downtown’s first and most influential developers. “Emil was very forward in getting apartments,” recalls Leonhardt. “He developed the Lion Place, and the Macaroni building, plus he brought Cubbies in,” she shares. “He was very active in [the community].”

Leonhardt and her husband eventually bought the old Howard Street Tavern and converted the upper floors into condos.

“That was the last piece of land that was not developed,’ she says. The space is part of what is now known as the 420 Condo Regime, the space of above Vivace.

“It was a lot of fun …once we got all the financing straightened out.” She explains that buying an existing space within a building to create new condos was kind of a new concept at the time.

“We finally found a bank that understood that this was just like buying a lot out west and putting a house on it; we were just buying the lot within the building and putting a condo on it.”

Living in the Old Market for over two decades, Leonhardt has witnessed many changes to the area. “I’m from back when [comedian Pat] Hazell was throwing cards up on the ceiling of Spaghetti Works,” she says. “I think everything has to change [and] I like the changes, as long as …[the Old Market] keeps its charm.” omahapublications.com

T

he Durham Museum has lived a double life. It first met the city’s growing mobility demand by being a transportation gateway for passenger rail traffic as Union Pacific’s grand Union Station.

As the desire for rail travel waned with the development of the automobile and air travel, the building was closed in 1971. It was later repurposed and refurbished and now serves as the city’s hub for history.

As the building celebrates its 80th birthday, Durham Executive Director Christi Janssen says both histories will be honored.

“This building has been serving the community for 80 years, first as a travel-transportation hub and then as a museum,” says Janssen. “We’re now nearing the point where half its life has been a museum.”

Opened in 1931, the magnificent art deco structure went on to welcome millions of travelers during the heyday of American passenger rail service. At its operational peak in World War II, 10,000 people passed through each day.

Open 24/7, this terminal serviced 64 trains and seven railroads daily.

“It was a very busy, active place,” says Bob Fahey, a former red cap (porter) and station master who met his late wife, Jaye, there.

A staff of 60 and a station full of amenities catered to every need.

A janitor spent eight hours a day polishing the station’s prodigious brass fixtures.

By the late 1960s, passenger rail travel in the Midwest trailed off to a trickle and the once bustling, gleaming station resembled a dingy ghost town set.

“It was kind of a sad thing to see it dwindling down,” says Fahey.

When Union Station closed in 1971, an era ended. With no further need for it, Union Pacific donated the building to the City of Omaha in 1973. If a future use for the cavernous space was not found, it might have joined other historic landmarks in the demolition heap. Fortunately, preservationists and history buffs repurposed it.

From its 1975 opening as the Western Heritage Museum to its life as the Durham Museum today, the building’s continued to be a magnet, only now the public comes to engage history.

After significant restoration, renovation and conservation, a few name changes, and gaining Smithsonian affiliation, the Durham has come into its own as a major arts-cultural institution. It presents exhibitions, lectures, tours and special events. And Union Station veterans such as Fahey volunteer to share their stories with visitors.

In 1997, the museum added the Durham name to recognize benefactors Charles and Margre Durham. In 2008, it was rebranded simply as the Durham Museum, Janssen explains,“to better communicate to the readonlinenow.com

public we’re more than western heritage.” She adds, “I think the same can be said about the way we use the building — that it’s more than just a museum where we have artifacts in a case you can look at. In 2009, we changed our mission from preserving and displaying artifacts to being a strong educational-entertainment resource for the community. We want to be a resource for people who enjoy seeing and experiencing history.”

In celebration of this 80th anniversary year, the Durham held joint architectural tours with another Omaha art deco icon turning 80, the Joslyn Art Museum, on Aug. 21. Both venues also provided family-friendly activities to visitors.

Offered for a value-mined $5 for both venues, visitors to both sites turned out in droves.

Janssen says the Smithsonian affiliation is something “we’re very proud of because it allows us to bring nationally recognized treasures to Omaha” via traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress and the National Archives.

treasures will be on view in coming months, including those from its Byron Reed Collection of rare coins and books and from its vast photo archive.“Our curatorial staff is spending a lot of time in our collections areas to be able to present more things,” she says.

The museum, on pace to surpass 150,000 visitors in 2011, “has really evolved,” says Janssen: “We’re able to offer a lot more, and we’re doing it with the same size staff as when I arrived in 2004.

We’re finding creative ways to partner. We’re very excited about our 80th anniversary celebration and about what the future holds.”
