A

s downtown Omaha continues to grow, so does the area’s need for quality housing.

Capitol Rows, a brand-new multi-family complex located on 24th Street between Joslyn Art Museum and Creighton University, is quickly fulfilling the demand.

Designed by Holland Basham Architects, Capitol Rows consists of a mix of three- and four-story buildings that sit atop a 1.65-acre site once occupied by drastically underutilized surface parking lots near Creighton’s campus. Tetrad Development Corporation proposed the nearly $10 million project last year in response to Omaha’s Downtown Master Plan.

“With downtown trying to improve its businesses, we thought additional housing was a definite need,” says Jenny McKeon, regional property manager for America First Real Estate Group, which manages Capitol Rows. “It’s a great community,” she continues. “And it puts us between downtown and Midtown—a middle area where there’s just not a lot of newer housing.”

As noted by the Omaha Downtown Master Plan, Capitol Rows is located in an Area of Civic Importance (ACI), which will ultimately become the Joslyn District. By providing new housing near downtown, repurposing old parking lots, and incorporating urban design elements, the project has met several of the key goals outlined in the plan. Capitol Rows features enhanced streetscapes, a

variety of building facades and materials, and frontages closer to the street—all of which underpin the urban living experience.

Now seeing its first residents settling in, Capitol Rows is made up of 60 one-bedroom apartments and 22 two-bedroom apartments.

The apartments range from around 575 to 975 square feet and are all renting at market rates. “It’s an extremely unique property,” describes McKeon. “The first building on Davenport Street has an elevator with four floors. The second building, which runs along 24th Street, has four different addresses with four different entrances, and includes some of our larger floor plans. We have more one-bedrooms because we noticed that there was more of a demand for that.”

Residents will inevitably be pleased with all of the amenities that Capitol Rows offers: stainless steel kitchen appliances, decoratorselected accent walls, designer cabinetry hardware, contemporary fixtures, spacious closets, dishwashers, available washers and dryers, a public plaza, private parking, monitored entryways, and 24-hour maintenance. Additionally, Capitol Rows features retail space and easy access to public transportation.

“Even though we are located close to Creighton, we are not a student property,” shares McKeon. “We have a ton of young professionals living here. And we are open to anyone and everyone that wants what we have to offer. It’s a terrific place to live.”

America First and Holland Basham are teaming up again to build another community on 14th and Leavenworth. Projected to open in the summer of 2012, the development will be similar to Capitol Rows and house 42 apartments.

M

ost of us have a memory that can be recalled by a particular candy or sweet treat.

Mine includes a gas station in Missouri, Nik L Nips, and a family reunion. I remember my aunt treating my cousins and me to these mini wax pop bottles filled with ultrasweet juice and candy buttons. Sharing, of course, was part of the fun.

The days of buying nostalgic candies in any gas station may be over, but our love for them carries on. In Omaha, one of the few places nostalgia is sold by the sugared ounce is Hollywood Candy at 11th and Jones in the Old Market. Hollywood Candy is the brainchild of owner Larry Richling, an antiques buff who started the restaurant company, Hollywood Diner. He bought the Fairmont Antiques and Mercantile in the Old Market last year, performed a complete overhaul, and reopened the antique mall in November of 2010. For the nostalgic and retro candies enthusiasts, it is the home of Hollywood Candy.

Along with the candy shop, the antique galleria houses the former Rexall Drug’s soda fountain, a movie theater set to showcase Richling’s collection of reels of classic films, and a numerous booths displaying the wares of various antique dealers.

Building General Manager Andy Robinson was my tour guide of the Fairmont galleria. We started in the candy store as Robinson showed off Hollywood Candy’s array of Jelly Belly jellybean flavors (the most extensive variety in Nebraska) and M&M collection. The store sells every type of retro and nostalgic candy available to them: Black Jack Gu, Slo Poke Bars, and Black Cows. There is a wide variety of salt water taffy, rock candy, a wall of “penny candy” (formerly available for a cent), and all of the modern-day Snickers, Reese’s, Mars, and Almond Joys one could hope for.

There is a hallway dedicated to specialty sodas (mostly in bottles). Pepsi and Coca-Cola products are made with the original recipes of cane sugar versus high-fructose corn syrup. Mary Richling, the owner’s wife, makes specialty chocolates, including a chocolate-covered potato chip.

Most notably, and most precious to Richling, is the extensive collection of nearly 100 PEZ dispensers.

Adjacent to Hollywood Candy is a collection of more favorite antiques of Richling’s, including a soda fountain. It looks like it’s straight out of American Graffiti, complete with plush vinyl booths and stools, old-time malt blenders and vintage tin posters. It reminds me of another childhood memory – sitting in a red vinyl booth in a 1950s restaurant in Dundee, eating a butterscotch parfait with my family – just another bit of nostalgia conjured up in the Fairmont Antiques and Mercantile. readonlinenow.com

Club weaves a new cultural-social dynamic for Omaha story by Leo Adam Biga

F

or a startup bar, House of Loom at 1012 South 10th St. is generating mucho buzz. The reasons for its popularity are as eclectic as the place and the young creatives behind it.

Start with the name. It’s both a brand and a social theory that co-owner and music director Brent Crampton, a DJ by trade, conceived with business partner Jay Kline (the former owner of Fluxiron Gallery). Five years ago, they launched loom, with a small “l,” as a roaming multicultural dance party aimed at getting people who normally don’t mix to meet, experience new cultures, form social networks and have fun.

“I have a passion for bringing people together,” says Crampton. It never sat right with him that despite the Afrobeats he played, his DJ-ing gigs drew mostly white crowds. Under the loom name he began inviting diverse audiences to intersect over music or art or causes at theme nights. “Cultural ambassadors” spread the word.

“These are people who are naturally connectors who have a social network within a certain cultural demographic,” says Crampton. “Through networking we have a lot of people who are into what we’re doing and support us.”

For Crampton and Kline, loom describes their intent to weave the social fabric through music, dance and other art forms, thereby broadening the cultural experience and moving forward social progress. With his Russell Brand looks and persona, Crampton’s a new-school hipster at ease talking about groove as an instrument of change.

He, Kline and a third partner, entrepreneur Ethan Bondelid, made loom hot-ticket events. The turnouts and cachet kept growing, but loom lacked a home of its own. By the partners leasing and renovating the former site of Bones, the Stork Club and the Neon Goose, they now have a distinctly urban space with more flexibility to entertain patrons and promote social agenda issues.

“It opens up possibilities to a lot of great things,” says Crampton.

Bondelid says it’s all about “getting people to try new things,” adding, “We invite people to go on an experience with us.”

Regulars have followed Crampton and Co. to the House of Loom’s near-Old Market location. First-timers are quickly becoming devotees. With a décor equal parts classic Old World bar, nouveau club, chic salon and kitsch bordello, it has a warm, funky ambience that, combined with an intimate scale, encourages staying awhile and interacting.

“The idea is for it to look really nice but we don’t want any form of pretentiousness. We just want a nice, unique, comfortable place that does look elegant in its own way,” says Bondelid.

and tiled fireplace, to the well-appointed oak and cedar bar and black painted tin ceiling.

Contemporary paintings and sculptures dot the interior.

Curtains can be drawn and furniture rearranged to create more private or open spaces. A custom-built booth is where Crampton and guest MCs ignite the music. LED lights frame the electric mood. When weather permits, an outdoor patio and garden offer an open-air hang-out.

House of Loom has hosted a wide vareity of events, including: an Omaha Table Talk dinner; an Opera Omaha night; a Project Interfaith speed dialogue; a celebration of India’s Festival of Lights; a Tango Night; and private parties, tastings and spoken word events. It’s a meet-up spot for arts patrons before and after shows. Featured bands have played Cuban, hip-hop, jazz and a myriad of other music.

Catered international cuisine accompanies some events. Crafted cocktails and premium beers are always available. The cultural mix happens in a blend of music, food, ideas, personalities and walks-of-life. Bondelid says House of Loom is a haven for creative-class urban adventurers seeking to sample “all different kinds” of experiences and expressions.

M

oments after meeting Larry Gomez, I felt like I was chatting with an old friend. I was struck by his warmth and affable energy as we swapped stories about our day. He chose not sit in the executive chair behind his organized desk. Instead, he took a seat next to me. It was the first of many clues pointing to the authenticity of his character.

I walked in knowing Gomez had a decorated career with the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce…Accolades and accomplishments to fill pages and days of narrative. But as I sat down and looked around, I began to see other pieces of the portrait of Larry Gomez. Within minutes, we were talking about the photos of his grandchildren proudly perched on his file cabinet.

“They’re phenomenal. I’m so lucky they’re in town,” he said.

Gomez smiled widely as he spoke of the joy in their “bright, shiny eyes.” He beamed while describing grandson Boston’s interest in TaeKwonDo, Lucy’s lithe dancing, and Lily’s inimitable spark. He fondly remembers the day his daughter Lisa and son-in-law B.J. told him he would be a grandfather.

When he was a new parent, Gomez had just graduated college at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, was in The National Guard, had just started his first job, and was playing music for extra money. “To be honest, I’m probably a better grandparent. I can slow down [now] for three or four hours and go to a birthday and hear kids singing Selena Gomez…no relation,” he said.

Today, his philosophy on life is ‘family, health and then whatever.’

Gomez loved growing up in Omaha and was proud to raise his daughter Lisa and son Mickey in a city that inspired him. He is grateful every day that he can still go running, play with his grandkids and ‘do what I do.’

“We have been very lucky, from my parents all the way down,” he said.

Gomez’ parents, John and Loretta, just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. John went to Omaha South and Lorretta went to Ralston High. “Somehow they met and the rest is history,” said Gomez.

Heartland Family Service honored the Gomez family on Nov. 17 for their dedication to leadership and service. Gomez and his brothers, Dan, Jerry, Johnny Ray, and Tom, were shaped by the benevolent work their parents did for underserved populations in the community.

“Thanks to our parents we have always had a community connection and tried to do the right thing,” said Gomez.

Aside from philanthropy, music has also been a thread in their family history; his father a singer and mother a singer/musician. According to Gomez, when each son turned nine, they got to pick an instrument.

“I picked guitar, of course,” said Gomez.

Gomez was in his first band in 1964 and led the band Larry Gomez and the Brotherhood for 23 years (1973-1996), playing wedding receptions, dinners, dances and private parties every weekend.

“I had a blast and loved it, but it got to be work,” he says. “I realized that music was my ‘other life,’ but the Chamber was my life.”

Gomez has been with the Omaha Chamber of Commerce for 35 years.

He joked, “I have been there so long that I once taught a workshop called Marketing Through the Fax Machine.” Gomez is currently the Director of Small Business Services and his passion ignites as he talks about the people around him.

“It’s the energy of our members and my fantastic co-workers who care about making a difference for our 3,300 members and the business community in general that make it great,” said Gomez.

Devoting time to chairing organizations, including Keep Omaha Beautiful and the Omaha Economic Development Corporation, is also important to Gomez. He was an integral part in launching the Buy the Big O Show in 1991, and with his leadership, it has grown from 10 to 400 exhibitors. “That event is near and dear to my heart,” he said.

With its business development and diversity of activities, Omaha is bustling. Gomez cites the CenturyLink Center, TD Ameritrade Park, Midtown Crossing, Village Pointe, Shadow Lake, Benson Music District, South Omaha Business Core, prospering Fortune 500 companies, and an active small-medium business community as a few reasons for the shift. The city now draws high-profile events like the Olympic Swim Trials and 2013 U.S. Senior Open Golf.

“Omaha is now (in the last 15 years) a big, happening city for all ages and a small, livable city for growing families and young adults,” he said. “We’re diversified in our economy and that will keep us solid and strong.”

Although there is always something going on in Omaha, Gomez is no longer ‘looking for the crowd.’ He prefers fun with family, which could include bowling, golf, or a nice meal and a film with his wife, Linda.

“I’d rather be here than 99 percent of the other cities.”

aVern David Thompson seems to pull a motorcycle out of thin air. Dragons and day lilies appear as if by magic. But in fact, Thompson creates these marvels, loop by patient loop, from utterly ordinary wire. The lily blooms within its own frame, a brightly colored line drawing come to life. If you’re good at mazes, you find the beginning, follow it around the flared, orange petals, along the curves of the pistil, receptacle, and leaves, and onto the black, arabesque frame. It is then you realize that this flower, in Thompson’s signature style, is made from a single length of wire.

In order to make a continuous line, with no overlap, he has developed a repertoire of coiled and looped knots. The flower has just one; a four-foot tuna made last year has 339 knots. In addition, he utilizes self-developed techniques that fan, weave, add definition to a line, fill in spaces with a soft, flat, shiny area, or simulate texture like feathers or scales. The most complex piece Thompson has made is an eagle in flight, its wingspan 22 inches. It uses many of the techniques just noted, some with minimal contact, and has 83 knots. “The number of knots not only depends on structural aspects but also on style,” he says. “Sometimes I use a simplified form, or I limit knots as a challenge.”

His tools are commonplace—16-gauge steel wire and a pair of modified pliers—but his creations are fascinating.

Free-standing, mobile, and wall sculptures—some incorporate colorful marbles or found objects. Each develops organically, Thompson visualizing the work as he goes. Rather than sketch, he sometimes makes sectional models, saying, “It’s a drawing in 3D.” He finishes a piece by painting it with industrial acrylic using a small watercolor brush, then adding a gloss of his own recipe. His newest work includes baskets, mostly functional, inspired by gardening.

Thompson’s art began as a whimsy to pass the time. As a boy, feeding the family’s horses meant first clipping the baling wire binding the bundles of hay. Thompson amused himself by twisting the wire into fanciful shapes, but he never considered taking these doodles seriously. “I wouldn’t have taken one into the house any more than I would a mud pie,” he says.

Unlike making mud pies and other childish games, he never outgrew his affinity for wire, which paralleled his interest in art.

Travel, college classes, and other artists nurtured his artistic dreams, until the “can’ts” of self-doubt cancelled his lofty ambitions. At one point, he resolved to destroy any high hopes by burning his accumulated artwork and writings. Within a year, he was drawing and painting again, and utilizing found objects like fence pickets and old hardware. Eventually he rediscovered wire.

Listing its attractions, Thompson says, “It provides an option for three-dimensional construction, it’s widely available, and portable.” It proved the perfect medium to convey his artistic voice.

Portability is a key factor for an inveterate traveler like Thompson. He has lived in Florida, California, and the Caribbean island of St. Croix. Here, found objects are water-smoothed shells, stones, wood, and bones washed onto the beach. The subtropical climate, ecosystems, popular culture, light and color, storms, and the ocean’s vastness and power are a transformational experience for any native Midwesterner, especially one with Thompson’s intellectual and philosophical mindset and artistic sensitivity.

Some sculpture is made as a mental challenge and others are pure delight, but Thompson’s impetus comes from “a need to convey, tangibly, the relationship involving the earth and its seas, the universe, individual persons, and the soul.” To think one could tie such things together with a length of baling wire.

hough the wind and snow may be blowing furiously and you might be experiencing some post-holiday letdown these days, don’t cave and become a homebody this season. Grab some friends, venture out to one of Downtown Omaha’s many great eateries and watering holes, and shake those winter doldrums.

And while you’re at it, partake of a craft cocktail or two. Here’s just a sampling of spirits to raise your spirits!

House of Loom 1012 10th St. Although in its infancy, House of Loom has a storied ambiance.

Most of the arm chairs, coffee tables, and lamps are repurposed from various antique stores. A weathered wooden bar brightened with fresh flowers sprawls into a room which, depending on the evening, may host a dance party, South African festival, photography shoot, or nude poetry audition. A navy blue curtain, which can be drawn to seclude the Bohemian/Victorian-themed upper lounge from the main room for private events, cloaks a secondary bar. The presence of a stage grounds the House firmly in its mission: “to unite different cultures of people through music.”

House of Loom’s liqueur selection aims to expose patrons to the wide array of alternatives to popular drinks. Thus far, they’ve been successful. “Ninety-eight percent of what we pour,” affirmed bartender Ethan, “are craft cocktails.” A cocktail of Famous Grouse, just-squeezed lemon juice, house-made ginger syrup, and Angostura red bitters affirmed the pride with which the bartenders hone their craft. Anticipated events include a Scotch tasting and a craft cocktail tour.

Nosh 1006 Dodge St. In the young Capitol district, Lila Anderson’s Nosh serves sophisticated cocktails in addition to the wines and “noshing”—or appetizers—for which the wine lounge is known. The cocktail menu is dominated by drinks such as the Pink Elephant (Delirium Tremens with St. Louis Framboise Lambic) and the Blushing Geisha (elderflower liqueur, ginger liqueur, and a sparkling rosé) that marry wine or beer with other ingredients. The interior is sleek and modern and steeped in slate gray, rust, and clay earth tones. A small stage in the back hosts live music every Wednesday evening. Crowning the bar like trophies for a promising inaugural halfyear of business are a couple of oak barrels, scrawled with the signatures of past visiting winemakers such as Opus One. The Side Door 3530 Leavenworth St. “Hidden in plain sight on Leavenworth,” The Side Door is now transitioning into its winter menu. “All drinks on the menu are classical,” according to barman and menu author Sam Bloomer, but it branches into a whimsical, “Willy Wonka aspect.” A cocktail of St. Germain, a house-made pear vodka, fresh lemon juice, and a twist of lemon reflects the bar’s commitment to local and seasonal ingredients, all of which—with the exception of ginger—are sourced from farmers’ markets.

The Side Door infuses gin with basil, stocks a gluten-free potato vodka, and specializes in pre-Prohibition-style creations. The bar is known not only for its creative cocktails but also for its steady lineup of live music. Varied masks dotting the walls reflect owner Steve Jamrozy’s international travels. A garden-like patio, complete with a mural and picnic table, complements the modest interior.

Boiler Room 1110 Jones St. The Boiler Room is like a technically perfect painting executed on a rough canvas. Rusting, riveted I-beams descend from street level into the multi-level, candle-lit dining room. Bold, splashy artwork accents the exposed brick walls that surround the white tablecloths that cover each table.

Enjoying a cocktail at The Boiler Room is “about discourse…and the taxonomy of cocktails.” A sensory process of elimination with the customer prompted bartender Ian McCarthy to prepare, with theatrical precision, an Aviation cocktail: Old Tom Gin, Rothman & Winter Crème De Violette Liqueur, Maraschino Liqueur, and fresh lemon juice. But don’t let the reference to scientific classification or the restaurant’s pressed linens fool you: sipping a cocktail at The Boiler Room should be “a hedonistic experience.” Echoing the restaurant’s philosophy, McCarthy doesn’t want you “to think too hard. Love through your senses a little bit.”

The event will be held at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs the weekend of Feb. 10-12. Big Brain Quality Tattoos and Empire Tattoo, Inc. are partnering with nationally recognized tattoo artist Shane O’Neill of Middleton, Del., to sponsor the event.

As a non-profit organization with a mission to further strengthen Downtown Omaha, the Downtown Improvement District made great strides in 2011. he hilly SoMa neighborhood is home to 135 perpendicular condominiums. One belongs to art lovers Sandi and Dr. Bill Bruns, who showcase their art throughout their space. The home has wall-to-wall artwork. Surprisingly, few of the paintings are Sandi’s, who is an artist and community volunteer. “I’m more stimulated by others’ work,” she explains.

The Bruns see the positive side of climbing three flights of stairs to their living, dining and sleeping areas. “Because then we don’t have to join a gym,” laughs Bill. “It’s like having your own built-in StairMaster.”

Also keeping them from needing the gym is the exercise they get walking and biking to downtown places for dining, art exhibits, theaters and museums. Sandi even rides her bike to go shopping. “A good day is when the car doesn‘t come out of the garage,” she said.

For their efforts, they are rewarded with a spectacular view of downtown Omaha from their high perch.

The couple lived near 58th Street and Happy Hollow Blvd. until six years ago when they started looking for a place in the downtown area. “I wanted the downtown urban experience,” said Bill.

They chose Rows at SoMa near 10th and Leavenworth streets. SoMa stands for “South of the Old Market.” He calls it “urban eclectic living.” Eighty-seven percent of the Rows at SoMa homes have been sold.

The first-floor entryway of their 2,170-square-foot home leads to Sandi’s art studio and a private, two-car garage.

On the second floor are dining, kitchen and living areas and a sweeping view. The compact kitchen at the heart of the loft-like space was a major reason they chose the home. The kitchen has mahogany doors, granite countertops and a table that expands to seat 16.

Cut-glass windows in the great room were custom-made for the Bruns. “I love the way the windows fragment the light,” said Sandi. “We have rainbows all over the place.”

touches of brass. Master bedroom windows provide an impressive view of downtown Omaha and the Old Market.

“We’re the first to see the Farmer’s Market open in May. Right out there are KANEKO and the Bemis,” said Sandi, pointing north.

The roof patio provides more artwork and another spectacular view of the downtown area. Sculptures include a bedraggled flamingo whose pink color has faded. He lost both wings when installed on the windy roof. A larger sculpture takes its inspiration from the sea.

The land on which SoMa sits was a Union Pacific rail yard in an earlier life. The hilly terrain might remind the Bruns of San Francisco, where they were married and had their two daughters.

The couple came to Omaha almost 40 years ago when Bill was offered a faculty position at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The psychiatrist also was medical director for the former Richard Young Hospital. Bill closed his psychiatric practice in 2004. A shortage of physicians, especially psychiatrists, brings him out of retirement to fill in when a doctor is needed.

The Bruns planned to stay only three years and then move to Hawaii, where they once worked and lived. But when the opportunity came, Bill turned down a job offer in Honolulu. They had fallen for Omaha and the city’s quality of life. readonlinenow.com

ince opening in April of 2010, Hiro 88 has brought a lot to the Old Market neighborhood that it calls home. The restaurant combines the old with the new, serving recipes that are tried and true with a style that is innovative and fresh.

Co-owner and operator Milton Yin has answered the call of the people of Omaha by bringing his popular West Omaha restaurant, Hiro Sushi, to the downtown area.

“We’ve always considered the Old Market the urban area of Omaha and…we wanted a restaurant that was a little more edgy,” says Charlie Yin, Milton’s nephew and general manager of Hiro 88. “ …Something with a bit of a twist…like a hybrid between something you’d see in a big city and something that fits into Omaha well.”

Hiro 88’s diverse menu of Asian cuisine is a combination of their popular sushi dishes as well as both full Chinese and Japanese menus. “One thing that not many people know is that we have almost the entire menu from the old Imperial Palace,” adds Charlie. He also shares that the chefs at Hiro are working on developing Thai and Korean dishes as well. “I’d say we have a focus on Sushi and Chinese, but with a Pan-Asian scope.”

Charlie shares how his uncle, born in China and raised in Korea, came to the United States when he was a young man. The family arrived in California, where older brother Danny (Charlie’s father) enrolled in college. Later, it was Danny and his wife, Anita, who traveled to Omaha and opened the popular Chinese restaurant, Imperial Palace, in the late ‘70s. “They’d seen a lot of tourist traffic coming in from Omaha and realized that Omaha needed a good Asian restaurant.”

The Yin family joined Danny in Omaha, where younger brothers David and Milton helped make the restaurant a success. After the Imperial Palace closed, Milton still felt drawn to the restaurant industry.

“It’s hard to get out of the food business,” says Charlie. “It’s something that encompasses your life.” Milton opened Hiro Sushi, located near 130th and Maple streets, in 2002.

As the popularity of Hiro Sushi grew, so did the wait line outside their restaurant during ‘reverse happy hour.’ “We used to have clients who lived in Midtown that said, ‘We really wish you’d open something further east,” recalls Charlie. Milton found the right spot at 13th and Jackson. “The Old Market really

presented a great opportunity with all the development they’re doing down here, so we decided to move downtown and it’s going really well.”

Charlie says the clientele runs the gamut between younger college kids to retirees who live in the Old Market. The restaurant flows from bar to lounge to table seating, as well as a private dining room for special occasions. Decorated by interior designers from Omaha and Chicago, the ambiance is elegant, while still casual and inviting.

Being edgy as well as earth-conscious was a priority when it came to the design of the space. The light fixtures, imported from Italy, emit a subtle, environmentally friendly glow through fluorescent and LED bulbs. The dining tables are constructed from sustainable wood grown in Brazil. In the middle of the lounge, watching over the patrons, is a large, nearly 300-year-old statue of Buddha carved from solid Indonesian river rock. “We just wanted to present something different.”

Along with the Pan-Asian fare, Hiro 88 also offers a full bar. “What we’ve really tried to do this year is hone in on, not just alcoholic beverages, but beverages that pair well with our food,” says Charlie. Guests can choose from a wide variety of wines, craft beers, and cocktails.

“One highlight is we actually have a 55-year-old bottle of Macallan Scotch worth about $16,000,” says Charlie. With a single serving priced at $1,200, it’s not surprising that only two shots have been purchased to date. “It doesn’t really go with our food, but it’s something novel to have around for Scotch fans out there.” readonlinenow.com

Curbside Clothing Curbside Clothing is an independent, creative retail shop with one-of-a-kind designs and original artistic clothing for both men and women. .H. Harriman is a major reason that Union Pacific today is North America’s largest railroad,” said Robert Turner, U.P. senior vice president-corporate relations.

Stand by the west side of the large, brick Union Pacific building at 9th and Jones streets in Omaha. Imagine the year is 1897, and you are part of the crowd there watching spirited bidding for a bankrupt railroad.

The bidding ends with a win for Edward H. Harriman and a group of investors. They buy Union Pacific for $110 million. The New York native, then president of Illinois Central Railroad, quickly goes on to bring Union Pacific Railroad out of bankruptcy caused mostly by a vast financial scandal.

“There was strong interest in Omaha in the auction, because you had a company that had been a key part of the city since 1862 so if it fell in the wrong hands—would it remain in Omaha?” said Turner.

Thanks to Harriman, Union Pacific did remain in Omaha where the railroad has been headquartered since Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act on July 1, 1862.

The Act mandated construction of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad through the joining of Union Pacific starting at the Missouri River on the east and Central Pacific starting in San Francisco on the west. The two railroads met at Promontory Summit Utah in 1869. Joining the rugged west together by rail was a stunning accomplishment in America’s history.

(The transcontinental railroad began in Omaha because there was not a bridge across the Missouri River from Iowa. Travelers stayed at U.P.’s elegant Transfer Hotel in Council Bluffs, took a ferry to Omaha, and continued their train trip from there).

Harriman’s first act as a U.P. director was to ride a railcar through the entire UP system, intently inspecting everything and persuading his fellow investors to spend more than $25 million for improvements. omahapublications.com

The sale of U.P. to a group of investors, including E. H. Harriman, was conducted on the steps of the UP Freight House on Nov. 1, 1897. The building was remodeled and used as the new centralized Harriman Dispatching Center on June 1, 1989, controlling train movements on most of the U.P. System.

Visionary, Philanthropist “Harriman was the Bill Gates of his time,” said Turner. Like Gates, Harriman was a visionary. “He was very innovative in his approach to understanding what rails could do for economic growth, and he was a builder.”

He was committed to safety and a strong infrastructure. “His willingness to listen to his employees for good ideas on ways to improve operations has really been the cornerstone of this company and still is today,” Turner said.

Also like Gates, Harriman was a philanthropist and environmentalist. In 1899, he took scientists on an expedition to explore Alaska. While there, he discovered a waterway that today is called Harriman Fjord. He founded the Boys’ Club of New York in 1876.

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire drew him across the country, to personally direct relief operations and provide free rail transportation to refugees evacuating the city.

A school dropout, the New York native began working as a messenger boy on Wall Street at age 14.

At age 22, Harriman bought a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. Among his first investments were railway stocks. In 1881, he bought his first railroad.

He maintained his home in New York, but spent a great deal of time at the Omaha headquarters rebuilding the infrastructure of the railroad. When Harriman ran Union Pacific, there were over 200 competing railroads in the United States. Today there are five large railroads.

underperforming businesses by pouring capital into them.” In 2008, he was inducted into the Greater Omaha Chamber Business Hall of Fame.

The prominent U.P. executive was so well known that his name was used in a movie based on the true story of two outlaws who robbed U.P. trains in Wyoming: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Beginning in July, Union Pacific’s 44,000 employees will observe the railroad’s 150th birthday.

No doubt, E.H. Harriman’s legacy will be a big part of that celebration.

And that freight depot where he bid on the railroad? Today, it’s called Harriman Dispatching Center, a modern, computerized center buzzing 24 hours a day while dispatching 850 trains over 36,000 miles of track in North America.

When Edward Harriman married Mary Averell in 1879, they left the wedding, held in her father’s train, with Harriman’s name painted on the engine. Her banker-father owned a railroad and put his new son-in-law on the board of directors.

The couple purchased a heavily forested Hudson River estate they called “Arden” near the village of Highland Falls, N.Y. After her husband’s death in 1909, Mary carried out his idea of a state park that would preserve the forest by donating 10,000 acres of their estate and $1 million to the State of New York, creating Harriman State Park, now the state‘s second largest park.

They had five children. Daughter Mary was a 19-year-old debutante in 1901 when she founded what is now called the Junior League. Her goal was to improve the lives of immigrants living in Manhattan. Members were other young women, including her friend Eleanor Roosevelt, who taught dancing to young girls at a settlement house.

Harriman’s Family Edward and his sons, Averell and Roland, served a combined 80 years as U.P.’s top executive.

The handsome Averell was a well-known politician and diplomat and governor of New York. His daughter Kathleen accompanied him to Britain, where he was a special envoy during World War II, and to Russia, where he was ambassador. She worked as a foreign correspondent.

Averell was President Harry S. Truman’s secretary of commerce. He twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination. As a widower in 1971, he married Pamela Churchill, ex-wife of Winston Churchill’s son, Randolph. After Harriman’s death in 1986, she went on to become a political powerhouse hostess in Washington, D.C., and ambassador to France.
