Fontenelle Forest/TreeRush Adventures is a must stop while in Sarpy County. Outdoor recreation abounds at Fontenelle with 19 miles of boardwalks and clearly marked trails, hands-on exhibits, live animal displays and abundant wetlands. For something a little more challenging there is TreeRush that features eight treetop trails with 103 different challenges. A treetop experience is available for all skill levels. KidsRush Park is there for ages 4-6 years old.

SCHRAMM PARK STATE RECREATION AREA Visitors refer to Schramm Park State Recreation Area as a hidden gem nestled among the rolling hills of the Platte River valley. The historic site of the state’s first fish hatchery boasts wellmaintained wooded trails that are popular with runners, bikers and casual hikers alike. The park is a noted destination for birdwatching, particularly during spring migrations. Families can

explore a geologic display, feed fish in cool water trout ponds, tour the Schramm Education Center and enjoy a picnic on the bluffs. The grounds also offer an access point to the Platte River water trail. The park is accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset and is located midway between Lincoln and Omaha. Camping facilities are available at nearby Louisville State Recreation Area, Mahoney State Park or Platte River State Park.

will flood Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in the fall, it’s hard to believe it all started as a small business with a simple vision of creating a family-friendly, farm experience. Vala’s Pumpkin Patch founder, owner, visionary and farmer, Tim Vala, grew up as a city boy in Omaha, Nebraska. Today, Vala’s Pumpkin Patch has grown into a 400-acre operation with nearly 55 acres of pumpkins planted every year. Jan Vala took on the crucial business roles of marketer, merchandise manager, personnel manager and accountant. She eventually worked full time for Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and was known to always remember each of the 1,000-plus employees’ names. Jan tragically passed away in 2021. Tim and Jan’s three daughters, Kirsten, Kyla and Kelsey, were always there to help however they could. Today, all three of the Vala daughters are co-owners of Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, as they take over many of the farm operations.

Werner Park is a unique outdoor venue, which is home to the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, and Union Omaha, a USL League One professional soccer team. Built in 2011, the stadium has 6,354

The butterfly bench public art project, known as “Wings Over Papillion,” celebrates the city’s 150th anniversary, its early history and the city’s namesake with uniquely painted benches placed throughout Papillion. The 34 benches showcase the work of a variety of artists and reflect the heritage, spirit and character of the community. There is a map and information about all the benches at papillion.org.

Visitors may explore the beauty and wildlife of Nebraska’s Platte River from the comfort of an 8-seat luxury airboat with Stinger Airboat Rides. Owned and operated by the City of Papillion, SumTur Amphitheater is considered a premier outdoor performance venue in the Omaha area. Hosting more than 100 events during its May through October season, this 1,500-person capacity facility provides opportunities for live family entertainment, private, nonprofit and corporate rentals as well as concerts, weddings, church services and business events. SumTur, which opened in 2007, is a seven-acre multiuse facility on the western edge of the Walnut Creek Lake Recreation Area. There are 350 stadium seats, 1,150 hillside seats, and industry standard audio, lighting and projection systems.

Family-owned and rooted, Soaring Wings Vineyard and Brewing was started in 2001 by husband/wife duo Jim and Sharon Shaw. The name “Soaring Wings” came from Jim’s background in flying for military and commercial aviation. The vineyard has won more than 300 medals at international wine competitions. The vineyard/brewery sits high on a hill just south of Springfield overlooking the Platte River valley. Beginning in 2011, Soaring Wings joined the ranks of local craft brewers. During the spring and summer months, Soaring Wings hosts music events most Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Tubing & Adventures, located in the most northwestern corner of Sarpy County, offers fun in the water, particularly the Elkhorn River. Tubing & Adventures is Omaha’s outfitter that provides a fun day on the river whether tubing or kayaking

while focusing on safety and keeping the river clean. The 55acre property offers multiple services that focus on river activities and camping. The adventure includes a 7-mile float of the Elkhorn River that takes roughly 3.5 to 6 hours or more in a tube and 2 to 3 hours in a kayak depending on conditions. Participants will experience the Omaha area like you have never seen – huge rock walls, large dirt cliffs and most likely wildlife in their habitat.

Birdies & Buddies Sarpy County provides golf courses of varying styles. On the west side of the county is the 27-hole golf course at Tiburon near Gretna on more than 12 acres of natural rolling hills and lakes. The facility is a great venue for outings as small as 40 or as large as 240 golfers. Tiburon also has a fullservice restaurant that can prepare any meal for any outing, wedding reception or business event. Papillion sports two public golf courses – Tara Hills and Eagle Hills. Tara has been a favorite among metro golfers since 1981. With fast undulating greens, four sets of tees and mature tree-lined fairways, this course is designed to be enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. Eagle, which is just down Cornhusker Road headed east, opened for play in 2000 as part of a residential development. The course features bent grass greens, rolling fairways, sculptured bunkers, lakes, creeks, wetlands and mature trees. Willow Lakes Golf Course is found traveling south of Highway 370 on 25th Street in Bellevue. The course was designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones. This challenging, picturesque course offers two practice greens and an outdoor driving range. Enjoy the Air Force heritage of this course by playing for its history, heroes and tradition. There’s a good chance a jet will fly over to land at Offutt Air Force Base.

Directly south of Willow golfers will find Tregaron Golf Course tucked into a Bellevue residential development. The course’s rolling bluegrass and rye fairways with well-placed mounds and pot bunkers provides a “links style” feel. Natural wetlands, winding creeks and four lakes complement the Craig Schreiner design. Water comes into play on nine of the 18 holes.

If your preference is indoor golf, Beyond Golf Bar and Kitchen in La Vista is the place. It features five GolfZon simulators where you can play some of the world’s most famous courses in extreme realism. Golfers can have a round of golf with a full bar, gourmet menu and big screen televisions. You will need to know someone to play these two courses, but they are worth the effort: Platteview Golf Club was founded in 1966 and designed by Lawrence Packard. The course features mature oak and cottonwood trees, lakes and gentle elevation changes. Since being renovated in 2000, the greens have earned the reputation as some of the finest in the area. Platteview has facilities for weddings and banquets. Lost Rail Golf Club, which is Nebraska’s newest course that opened in August 2022, blends the exclusivity and intimacy of a destination course with the convenience and character of a classic golf club. Epic History Told Bellevue’s commitment to its heritage and civic pride can be seen throughout the community. The Old Presbyterian Church, which is believed to be the oldest surviving church in the state, was built circa 1856-1858 to hold religious services, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The Old Fontenelle Bank in downtown Bellevue, which was built in 1857, is considered the oldest commercial building in Nebraska. The original walk-in vault and other artifacts are located inside. The bank was placed on the National Register in 1969. The 1830s log cabin is the oldest building in the state. The final resting place of Chief Black Elk, the last full-blooded chief of the Omaha Tribe, is found in the Bellevue Cemetery. The chief is one of the most iconic figures in Sarpy County. He had a reputation as a peaceful man, strong leader and excellent orator. Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue is headquarters for the 55th Wing and U.S. Strategic Command. The facility began as Fort Crook between 1894 and 1896. The fort’s namesake was Maj. Gen. George Crook, a renowned Indian fighter and Civil War hero. In spring 1921, 260 acres was leveled and seeded to create an airfield suitable for frequent takeoffs and landings by heavier-than-air aircraft. The flying field was designated Offutt Field in honor of 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt on May 6, 1924. Offutt, who was killed flying with the Royal Air Force in France, was Omaha’s first World War I air casualty. On Jan. 13, 1948, Offutt Field was transferred to the new Department of the Air Force and became Offutt AFB. Later that year Offutt became the host for Strategic Air Command headquarters. Offutt Air Force Base

Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial
In 1992, Offutt became the host for the United States Strategic Command’s headquarters. A group tour of Offutt requires some paperwork that must be completed ahead of time so work with the Sarpy County Tourism Team early by calling 1-800-467-2779. Veterans Park in Papillion honors the service and sacrifice of our nation’s military veterans, especially those in Sarpy County. Its Honor Walls display the names of Sarpy County veterans of all eras and the newly added sculptures honor service members KIA, MIA and POW. The park is an official Gold Star and Blue Star Memorial, and it honors Purple Heart recipients. And don’t forget to visit the Papillion Butterfly Garden while at Halleck Park. The garden celebrates and protects the community’s namesake — the butterfly. This garden provides not only a habitat, but a living classroom where the community can come to enjoy and learn about butterflies. The garden was created in 2020 as a Papillion 150 project, celebrating Papillion’s 150th anniversary. The garden was made possible thanks to the generous donations of the Papillion community, and it is sustained by area volunteer gardeners.
The Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Papillion, which is scheduled to open in Spring 2024, is just south of the SumTur Amphitheater overlooking the Walnut Creek Recreation Area.

The butterfly garden enhances the serene and reflective nature of Veterans Park. The garden features a 16-foot-tall monarch butterfly sculpture by renowned Omaha artist Matthew Placzek.

EPIC HISTORY TOLD Czech and Slovak Educational Center and Cultural Museum
Visitors may experience “yesterday Papillion” at the Sautter Farmhouse and Portal Schoolhouse in downtown Papillion. The farmhouse, built circa 1860, is a 1½-story wood frame structure with an attached cob shed that is a typical example of the German-American farmhouses of the period. The 1890 one-room school was open until May 1993. Area fourth-graders visit the school during Nebraska History Month each year to experience the one-room school. Tours of both facilities are available by appointment, call Sarpy County Tourism at 1-800-467-2779.

To see the complete historical past of the area, one must visit the Sarpy County Museum. The facility, which is located in Bellevue, plans to move to the corner of 90th Street and Nebraska Highway 370 to house the nationally renowned Wimmer Railroad Collection from Bill and Judy Wimmer in addition to its regular collection of Sarpy County items. Sarpy County was the springboard for Nebraska’s settlement and expansion. Its rich history ranges from local Native American tribes to Offutt Air Force Base. Historical documents include digitized newspapers, naturalization records, and digitized and printed photos. The museum holds a collection of artifacts and historical resources covering the cities of Bellevue, Gretna, La Vista, Papillion and Springfield, and Sarpy County at-large. The Czech and Slovak Educational Center and Cultural Museum in La Vista is dedicated to honoring and preserving the heritage of the state’s early Czech and Slovak immigrants. Along with numerous exhibits, there are fresh kolaches and pastries available. The gift store features many old-world treasures, including Bohemian glass, hand-decorated eggs and imported glass Christmas ornaments. The museum is

located on the northwest corner of 84th Street and Giles Road.
Old Presbyterian Church
The Cloisters on the Platte, which is found along the Platte River near Gretna, documents the “original” history with a walk following the 14 Stations of the Cross. Joe Ricketts, former CEO and founder of TD Ameritrade, had long dreamed of making a Jesuit retreat available to more people. The Cloisters opened in 2017 and brings the power of quiet reflection to people seeking spiritual renewal. There are retreat options available as well. SARPY COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2024

Beyond Tasty STELLA’S BAR & GRILL The home of the “Stellanator” can be found in Sarpy County - more specifically in Bellevue. Stella’s Bar & Grill, which was established in 1936, was named after Estelle Francois Sullivan Tobler. She was one of Bellevue’s first tavern owners, a mother who raised her four children alone and the creator of the famous “Stella Hamburger.” The restaurant still operates with the Stella’s philosophy “good food doesn’t need to be fancy” and patrons should expect their burger served on a napkin with fresh cut fries for a side. As for the “Stellanator,” patrons have up to 45 minutes to eat 6 burger patties, 6 fried eggs, 6 slices of cheese, 12 strips of bacon, lettuce, tomato, fried onions, pickles, jalapenos, peanut butter, bun and an order of fries. The current record is just under four minutes to complete the challenge! Stella’s was voted the Best Restaurant in Sarpy County in 2021 with the Omaha Metropolitan Area Tourism Awards.

Graley’s Creamery & Confections, which is located in downtown Papillion, is a throwback to the late 1800s. Since opening in 2017, Graley’s has become a popular destination for families. It is the ultimate spot for friendly, old-fashion service and delicious premium, all natural, homemade ice cream, pies and confections made from the freshest local ingredients. When you walk in, you know your day is going to get better. There is a common misconception that Graley’s is the last name of the founding family. Actually, the Compton family started Graley’s, which is a mashup of their two children’s names, Greg and Haley, something their dad has called them since they were little.
Roma Italian Restaurant along Fort Crook Road North in Bellevue is familyowned and operated. Roma’s has delicious made-from-scratch Italian food. The restaurant opened in 2016. The menu includes subs, house specialties with chicken, veal, shrimp, salmon and steak, and pastas of all kinds. Roma’s was voted the Best Restaurant in Sarpy County in 2022 during the Omaha Metropolitan Area Tourism Awards.

Family Fun Found GRETNA CROSSING PARK Gretna Crossing Park, which just opened in September 2023, sits on 150 acres of fun, sportsmanship and family activities nestled in the rolling hills of Gretna. The park is located northeast of Nebraska Crossing. In partnership with the YMCA of Greater Omaha, there is a recreation/aquatic center where you can get in a workout or just enjoy time by the indoor or outdoor pools. There are miles of trails for walking, running and cycling. There is a fishing pond, picnic shelters, playgrounds, a dog park, 18-hole disc golf course and outdoor amphitheater. Gretna Crossing also has state-of-the-art softball, baseball, football and soccer fields.
PAPIO FUN PARK Papio Fun Park, which is located in Papillion, offers family fun of several varieties. The vision more than 25 years ago was to create a place that was fun for the kids. The White family has provided memories for area children for several generations. From go-karts to miniature golf to lazer tag to glow tag to batting cages to the arcade there are many hours of entertainment at Papio Fun Park.

BIG SCREEN TIME If movies are your family’s escape, there are two options in Sarpy County – Marcus Theatres’ Twin Creek Cinema in Bellevue and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in La Vista. Both theaters offer first-run movies, meal options and multiple specials throughout the week.
The Papio Bay Aquatic Center, found at the east end of Halleck Park in Papillion, provides warm weather fun with five acres of swimming and recreation, including a zero-depth pool, waterslides, diving boards, sand volleyball, and for smaller children, a wading pool with butterfly slide.

SMASH PARK Smash Park, found across the street from Cabela’s in La Vista’s Southport area, offers a variety of family entertainment – and then some. There are weekly events and private party spaces available with great food and drinks. Smash Park should be open in Spring 2024.
SARPY COUNTY COMMUNITY EVENTS Community celebrations and events abound in all five Sarpy County communities from La Vista’s Salute to Summer in late May to Bellevue Rocks! Riverfront Festival to Papillion Days, Springfield Days and Gretna Days and the Sarpy County Fair in Springfield in early August.
There are two bowling facilities in Sarpy County – Papio Bowl in Papillion and The Alley in Bellevue. Papio Bowl is set up for both casual and serious bowlers. There also is family entertainment with cosmic bowling, arcade games, and great food and drinks. The Alley, which is scheduled to open in early 2024, was renovated recently and provides entertainment options for the entire family, including ax throwing and arcade games.

OUTDOOR RECREATION If you prefer to spend your time outdoors, there are multiple options with recreation areas available for hiking, fishing, biking, jogging and picnicking. There is Chalco Hills, Walnut Creek, Big Elk Lake, Prairie Queen recreation areas and Schramm State Recreation Area. And, don’t forget about the MoPac Trail in Springfield. The more-than-50-mile-long recreational trail runs between Omaha and Lincoln along the abandoned Missouri Pacific Railroad corridor. The highlight of the trail is the half-mile-long railroad bridge that crosses the Platte River.
FALL FUN In the self-proclaimed “Halloween Capital of the Midwest,” fall is many people’s favorite time of the year. There are several options in Sarpy County for scary fun at Haunted Hollow, Ranch of Terror and Scary Acres. Also, never forget about fall, family fun at The Bellevue Berry and Pumpkin Ranch and Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard.

The Guardians of Freedom Air Show is staged each year usually in late August at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. Recently, the show was staged at the Lincoln Airport while the runway was replaced at Offutt. However, the show returns to Sarpy County in 2024 and that weekend’s events are free to the public. Families will enjoy experiencing the equipment up close and visiting with military personnel.

Fun Just Across the County Line CASS COUNTY A short jaunt on Interstate 80 West will find several of Nebraska’s unique, beloved and major attractions. The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum is one of the nation’s foremost facilities of its kind. With 300,000 square feet, the museum preserves and displays historic military artifacts from throughout American history. An impressive collection of aircraft flown during the years, including the Cold War, are housed in the museum. Visitors get a first-hand look at airplanes like “Looking Glass,” “Nighthawk,” “Invader” and other significant aircraft. The museum has a range of exhibits and interactive educational stations and draws guests from throughout the world.
If you want to come face-to-face with wildlife, such as bison, pronghorn, white-tailed deer and other native wildlife, make sure to stop at The Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari. The facility is operated by the world-famous Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. The fourmile drive features Bison Overlook, Pelican Wetlands, Prairie Dog Town and Wolf Canyon, where a boardwalk experience allows guests to watch the pack play and prowl.
“America’s Home Track” is found at Eagle Raceway. The dirt track hosts a regular weekly show on Saturday nights from April to September. The Mini E Raceway inside the high-banked bull ring of Eagle Raceway hosts go-kart racing on Friday nights.

Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, which is located between Omaha and Lincoln, is a modern park with several recreational activities including mini golf, tennis, basketball, horseback trail rides, fishing and picnicking. A 70foot observation tower allows a view of the nearly 700 acres of park land overlooking the scenic Platte River. Guest rooms in the park’s lodge include sleeping lofts with fireplaces and secluded cabins. And don’t forget about the Louisville State Recreation Area and Platte River State Park for additional outdoor fun!
Mad Cow Paintball, located just outside of Louisville, offers a unique adventure with 40 acres of flat land near Turkey Creek for games and tournaments. The focus is making paintball fun and safe for everyone. The friendly barnyard animals, including llamas, alpacas and a camel, are sure to delight people of all ages at Scatter Joy Acres – Petting Zoo near Murray. Visitors will learn about the animals through interaction. While in Elmwood, stop at the Bess Streeter Aldrich House and Museum, which is the home of Nebraska’s beloved, best-selling author where she lived, worked and raised a family. Aldrich’s works still are in print today, including “A Lantern in Her Hand,” “The Rim of the Prairie” and “Spring Came on Forever.” Her books told the stories about the ups and downs of small-town living during prairie times in the Midwest.

Boys Town has been offering healing and hope for more than 100 years. While ministering to the homeless on the streets of Omaha, Father Edward Joseph Flanagan developed a lifelong interest in young people and their struggle to grow into responsible, productive members of society. There are many types of tours available of the Village of Boys Town. When Flanagan purchased the Overlook Farm in 1921, it became the new, permanent site of Boys Town. Over the decades that followed, schools, churches and homes were built, and tens of thousands of young lives were transformed. When you visit theVillage o f Boys Town, a National Historic Landmark District, you’ll get an unforgettable glimpse into the history of an organization that has given new hope to so many at-risk children during the past 100 years. Lauritzen Gardens/Kenefick Park is a must-stop escape to an urban oasis. Lauritzen Gardens is the nation’s premier botanical garden for its ability to impart beauty, awe and knowledge about local-to-global natural worlds. Trains run in the model railroad garden on weekends in April and from May 1 to Oct. 31. Kenefick Park, which is free to the public, has two of the greatest locomotives ever to power Union Pacific Railroad sitting at the southwest point of the
