If you’re renting a car or hopping in a cab it will take you less than 10 minutes. Getting Around Omaha Rental cars, taxis, limousine and shuttle bus services are available at the airport. The majority of Omaha hotels offer complimentary direct transportation to and from the airport, as well as shuttle service within a specific mile radius.

Driving To Omaha Omaha is conveniently located in the center of the county and in the heart of the Midwest at the junction of I-29 and I-80. Once you arrive you’ll find the city is easy to navigate. The city streets are set up on a grid system, Dodge Street divides the city north and south, and numbered streets start at the Missouri River and increase as you drive west.

Rent bikes, find unique Omaha souvenirs and enjoy the full-service coffee shop, which includes a great $5 lunch special.

Visitors Center Bike Rental Trek cruise bikes are available for rent in both adult and youth sizes at the Omaha Visitors Center. They are equipped with automatic gear shifts which make them very easy to ride. Rental is by the hour or day and includes a bike helmet and bike lock. Rentals available year-round, weather permiting. Adult Bike Rental: $10 per hour $20 per 3 hours $30 all day
Youth Bike Rental: $5 per hour $10 per 3 hours $15 all day

local photographer captured these two brothers taking a ‘selfie’ in front of the Heartland of America Park fountain. Located between the river and downtown Omaha, it’s considered one of the tallest shooting fountains in the world. More than ten thousand gallons of water per minute shoot through 31 nozzles to create a 400 ft. high water and light show beaming with more than 130,000 watts of colorful illumination. Computer controlled and remotely programmable, Omaha’s fountain guru can actually change the dance of the waters and the fountain’s colors by mobile phone – so each day may bring a different experience all dependent on the guru’s colorful mood.

The month-long festival includes live music, old-fashioned carolers, ice skating in the Old Market, Dancing Santas at the Symphony, the lighting of the official Christmas tree, and the traditional performance of A Christmas Carol. To top off a great year and ring in a new one, watch as the sky over Heartland of America park lights up with a beautiful New Year’s Eve firework display.
Fort Omaha Intertribal Powwow Fort Omaha Campus September A celebration of Native American cultures, this outdoor Powwow honors the traditional dance, music, artistry, and foods of Native Americans from Nebraska and surrounding regions. The event is free and open to the public.

Things That Go Omaha Children’s Museum Through April 14, 2014 Explore all the things that make the world go round. Little engineers can build a pinewood derby car and race it down a winding track, create a pinball rollercoaster with lights, ramps and jumps, and shoot balls and bottles with air powered cannons inside the launch cage. Kids will learn how they can be in two places at once as they use the internet to send themselves across the room, or even across the globe with giant video chat screens. Get both body and mind moving in this fast-paced exhibit that is full of energy! No Strangers: Ancient Wisdom in a Modern World Kaneko January – May 2014 Explore rare and indigenous cultures through more than 100 photographs from The Annenberg Space for Photography, curated by esteemed anthropologist Wade Davis. The exhibit highlights cultures threatened with extinction due to industrialization and modernization.
1968 The Durham Museum February 8 – May 4, 2014 Travel back to 1968 and the non-stop barrage of events that happened that year. This major multi-media exhibit includes three interactive “lounges” that focus on music, design, movies and television. Objects from ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Laugh-In’ and ‘The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour’ provide another personal connection to this fascinating year. Poseidon and the Sea: Myth, Cult, and Daily Life Joslyn Art Museum February 8 – May 11, 2014 Take an artistic journey into Greek mythology with Poseidon, the God of the Sea. Climb onboard a steam train, take a look at one of the world’s rarest coin collections, and enjoy an old-fashioned phosphate at an authentic 1930s soda fountain. The Durham Museum, Omaha’s original art deco train station, has been transformed into a vibrant museum where you can experience the region’s rich history in a fun hands-on way. Tour the expansive campus of Boys Town. The national landmark, museum, historic chapels, gardens, and Father Flanagan’s home, are all preserved in time inside this world-renowned village. New this year a QR code tour – scan the special codes located throughout the Boys Town campus and explore using your smart phone. Catch the heritage of jazz in a part of the city where Duke Ellington and Count Basie once played. Love’s Jazz and Arts Center is committed to the preservation and advancement of African American arts; the Center features guided tours, gallery talks, and interactive storytelling. At the Mormon Trail Center, you can take a personal trip to the 1800s by experiencing firsthand the struggles and triumphs of the great Mormon Migration. Pull a handcart like pioneers did all those years ago and see what it was like to live in a make-shift cabin and travel by covered wagon. The first Latino art and history museum in the Midwest, El Museo Latino is a cozy, culturally-intense center that is as authentic as the Latino restaurants and shops surrounding it.
Meeting Monet Thirty-eight different marbles from seven countries combine to make this pink marble museum a masterpiece— and that’s just the outside of the Joslyn Art Museum. Inside, it’s filled with more than 11,000 works of art from antiquity to the present featuring work from artists such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, and Jackson Pollock. Free Admission.
Romancing the River Enjoy a romantic gondola ride and watch the spectacular fountain at Heartland of America Park with its 400-foot high water and light show, considered one of the tallest shooting fountains in the world, or take a stroll through the park’s 31-acres, located near the Old Market Entertainment District and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. Walking on ‘Bob’ is like walking on art suspended over the Missouri River. This one-of-a-kind 3,000 foot-long suspension bridge provides an almost air-borne experience. Stand in the middle, and you’ll be standing in both Nebraska and Iowa at the same time. Bob connects nearly 150 miles of walking and biking trails. On select Fridays during the summer enjoy Bridge Beats, live music performances on the bridge plaza. Nearby, Lauritzen Gardens is an urban oasis with more than 100 acres of botanical beauty including a Victorian Garden, a rose garden, and a four-acre arboretum. Lauritzen is also home to two of the most powerful locomotives ever built.

A cultural gem celebrating its 90th season, the Omaha Community Playhouse offers two distinct theatre experiences. The Hawks Mainstage Theatre offers mainstream entertainment for everyone, while the Howard Drew Theatre offers a more contemporary, cutting-edge theatre experience. Omaha’s historic and ornate Orpheum Theater is home to Omaha Performing Arts’ Broadway Across America series and Opera Omaha, which produces a season of original productions that combine great music, phenomenal singers and rich stories. The Blue Barn Theatre, known for its daring, innovative productions and powerful acting ensemble, features four award-winning contemporary plays each season. This year marks the theatre’s 25th season of performing stories that challenge both the artists and audience. Housed in a beautifully restored 1927 vaudeville palace, The Rose Theater is one of the top children’s theaters in the country. The troupe of professional actors creates performances geared toward children from 4 to 18 years of age. The John Beasley Theater highlights live productions written by, or featuring African American characters. The Call of the Wild For birders, walkers, and bikers, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge connects nearly 150 miles of nature trails and provides picturesque views of the Missouri River Valley. In addition to having a top nationally ranked park system, Omaha features five lakes which offer fishing, boating, and recreational activities all year long. These lakes include Cunningham, Zorinsky, Standing Bear, Lawrence Youngman, and Bennington. Located along the wooded Missouri River valley and along a main migratory path, it only makes sense that the Omaha area is a birding hotspot. Spring and fall are peak seasons but because the area offers diverse bird habitat – lakes, prairies, woodlands, and riverbanks – you will find a wide variety of bird species most any time of year.
Tubing and Tanking Forget the boat - try tubing and tanking down the scenic Elkhorn River. Which should you choose? It depends on how wet you want to get. With tanking, you float down the river in an 8- foot diameter stock tank fitted with custom made picnic tables. With tubing, you are a little more intimate with the water, sitting in commercial-grade inner tubes with your feet and other body parts dangling in the river. Both offer a fun way to float and enjoy the outdoors.

Day Trips
A wonderful way to savor the day is with wine. Just a short drive from Omaha, find some of the Midwest’s finest wineries, known for their distinctive and award-winning flavors. Enjoy wine tours, tastings and entertainment, as well as beautiful views of the countryside just follow the Southeast Nebraska Wine Trail and make a day of it, or several. The eight vineyards along the Wine Trail offer everything from spectacular views of the Platte River Valley to tasting rooms inside turnof-the century brick caves. One of the wineries even sits on land once owned by Ulysses S. Grant. It’s a great way to soak up the beautiful scenery and experience Nebraska’s unique brand of wine-making.
Saunders County A short drive west of Omaha on Hwy 92 will take you to picturesque Saunders County. Rural in nature peppered with Main Street appeal, history and surprises that seem to pop out of nowhere - like the home office of David Letterman, it’s located in the small town of Wahoo, which is also home to the only submarine memorial in the country. Or follow an impulse, turn off the highway and discover Our Corner Cottage, an amazingly eclectic gift shop sprouting among the corn. In Ashland, find an authentic small town main street lined with gift shops, galleries, unique shops and an old fashioned ice cream parlor. Ashland is located on historic U.S. Route 6, considered the longest highway in the U.S. Hidden away in the beautiful vistas of Saunders County is Iron Horse Golf Club, an award winning course that Golf Digest considers one of the best.

Adventure at Exit 426 Exit 426 is just a short drive west of Omaha and offers a variety of different adventures. Go on safari Nebraska style - at the Lee Simmons Wildlife Safari and Conservation Park, a four mile, drive-through wildlife experience. Stretch your legs with a walk to wolf and bear canyon, and hike the nature trails surrounding the park’s lake. New this year, the Crane Meadows Viewing Tower, climb up 28 feet to get a bird’s eye view of nature. Cool fact – the tower is actually a piece of baseball history, it was saved when historic Rosenblatt Stadium was torn down. Drive across the road and off to space. The Strategic Air & Space Museum is a 300,000 square foot museum dedicated to the nation’s most prized and rarely displayed military aircraft. Experience the future of aviation and space travel, walk through two aircraft display hangers and see Looking Glass, VooDoo, the Delta Dagger and more amazing flying machines. Nearby, Mahoney State Park offers a nature escape year-round. With a total of 700 acres nestled along the picturesque Platte River, it’s a great place to hike, bike, and ride horses, go paddle boating, fish and sled (in the winter). The Peter Kiewit Lodge at Mahoney includes a full service restaurant; the Mahoney Grill is open every day, except Christmas. Sunday Brunch is one of the specialties. On the drive back to Omaha, notice a stunning glass chapel on a hilltop just off I-80. The Holy Family Shrine was created for travelers as an oasis for peace and tranquility. Two streams cut through the limestone that forms the floor and foundation of the chapel. Its unique glass architecture, with its curved wooden arches, makes it a perfect place to stop and enjoy the beauty of the area.

The Drover is known for whisky marinated steaks, featuring the best Certified Angus Beef around. The Travel Channel’s Food Wars stopped in Omaha to find the best strip steak, and pitted Italian steakhouses Caniglia’s Venice Inn against Piccolo Pete’s. Out of the two history-rich steakhouses, Caniglia’s won, but ask Omaha billionaire Warren Buffett and he’ll likely point you to Piccolo Pete’s and Gorat’s. So who does make the best Omaha steak? The origins of the Reuben sandwich has been a long standing debate throughout the years – but the theory that rings most true is the sandwich’s creation at Omaha’s Blackstone Hotel in the early 1900s. A few steps away from the Reuben’s original stomping ground is the Crescent Moon, a current hotspot for the culinary favorite. Stop by and sink your teeth into two pieces of grilled marble rye stuffed with slow cooked corned beef topped with sauerkraut, bubbly Swiss cheese and creamy Thousand Island dressing—aptly named the Blackstone Reuben. The Reuben has been a menu staple at the Dundee Dell since 1934. Choose from corned beef or turkey and taste test their super secret sauce. Aksarben Village A mixed-use development combining urban living with entertainment and dining, Aksarben Village is home to several restaurants including Ponzu Sushi & Grill and Mai Thai Restaurant. Attracting young college adults, Aksarben’s Stinson Park hosts an array of outdoor events including the Riverfront Wine Festival, Omaha Beer Fest and Artsarben, a festival showcasing art by 80 artists from across the country.
Dundee Centrally located, Dundee’s historic streets are lined with cozy restaurants, one-of-a-kind shops and friendly bars frequented by the neighborhood’s residents. Included on the National Register of Historic Places, Dundee has stayed true to its classic roots while mixing in the hip vibe of a burgeoning neighborhood. One of the most interesting facts about Dundee occurred in 1945 during World War II. Very few Japanese balloon bombs made it as far inland as the single incendiary balloon that exploded over the Omaha Dundee neighborhood. Today, a plaque now commemorates the spot where the bomb exploded.
South Omaha Explore the sights, flavors and aroma in the South Omaha district. With historic ties to cultures from across the globe, South Omaha continues to celebrate its Polish, Czech, German and Mexican heritage through food and art. Enjoy carne asada tacos at Taqueria Tijuana, a customary Polish meal at the Bohemian Café, or grab a Yo-Yo (a traditional Latino pastry) at the International Bakery. Finding just one souvenir can be a challenge with dozens of one-of-a-kind neighborhood shops including the World of Mexican Pottery. A
t the end of the 19th century, Omaha was in its prime as a great railroad center, connecting the settled East with the wideopen West. The Old Market area was at the height of its splendor—bustling with produce dealers, buyers and transporters. The bustle continued until the 1950s when Omaha’s westward expansion and radical changes in grocery marketing abruptly brought the activity to a halt. That’s when Sam Mercer, threatened with building condemnation notices, proposed to rescue his family’s red brick warehouses by renovating them for new uses. Most people thought him imprudent. Today, they call him a visionary. Mercer’s role has been a delicate balance of making things happen and allowing things to evolve. Nonetheless, he is the first to admit that there never was a master plan for developing the Old Market. “We knew these warehouses had possibilities, and to tear them down to construct contemporary buildings would have been like painting over the Mona Lisa.” Change happens all the time, but it has to be the right kind of change. Preservation and maintenance of the architectural integrity of the buildings remains a guiding principle.
