It is our pleasure to introduce to you the Best of Omaha winners for 2016. The success of last year’s stand-alone Best of Omaha magazine and festival enticed us to do it again, and do it bigger. Maybe you’re leafing through this at the Best of Omaha festival. Maybe you’re deciding whether to go out for sushi or Middle Eastern food on a summer’s evening. EING AN OLD dude means that I have to be forever vigilant when it comes to not

showing my age, but there seem to be little traps laid at every turn for a guy like me.

I am particularly befuddled, for example, by technology. If you want to appear out of touch, there is perhaps nothing more telling than being an analog man in a digital age.

A co-worker gently reminded me the other day, for example, that that I no longer need to refer to that pocket thingy I carry as a “cell phone.” Nobody under a million years old, I was informed, uses the term. Just call it a phone like everybody else does, it was suggested. But more than 25 years of saying, “Call me on my cell phone if you need anything” is a tough habit to break.

And this got me thinking about The Best of Omaha. It would be branding suicide to tinker with the contest that, over the course of more than two decades, has become synonymous with ideals of excellence in this town—saying nothing of the fact that my publisher would kill me if I ever so much as floated the notion—but I’m increasingly tempted to re-tag the annual effort more simply and succinctly as “The Best.” That’s right, I would propose we drop the “of Omaha.”

There’s sound reasoning behind my thinking, and it begins and ends with my strong opinions on the city itself.

Omaha is no longer the sleepy, quasi-backward little place I moved to in 1981. Today, being the Best of Omaha is akin to being in contention for the best anywhere. Our “list of lists” story on page 8 provides ample evidence that Omaha is becoming a world-class city.

But my idea of truncating our marketing-speak is probably doomed right from the beginning.

Besides picturing my publisher’s head exploding at the mere hint of such an idea, you just don’t mess with a good thing.

And imagine the pushback I’d suffer at the hands of the 40,000 of you who cast over 700,000 individual votes in this year’s contest. After all, the Best of Omaha is your contest. I’m sure the interwebs and my electronic mail would light up with complaints and ridicule.

What’s that? Just like with “cell phone,” using such terms as “interwebs” and “electronic mail” is another sure-fire way to show my age and out-of-touch-ness?

Oh, never mind. This is hopeless. I give up.

RANTED, THERE ARE a lot of magazines and

organizations out there making Top 10 lists of cities nowadays. It’s one of the top 10 favorite things to do for these folks. In all, Omaha and surrounding cities were ranked in 83 lists from 2013 to 2015, including a smattering of #1’s. And those are just the ones we could find.

The Omaha metro area is now recognized as one of the best places in the country to raise a family, to start a business, to get a college education, to have a great beer, to hear indie music, to land a high-paying first job, to live safely, to live healthfully, to live cheaply, to be a professional woman, to rent a house, to do…well, most anything that people want and hope to do in life.

But wade through all this chatter, boil down what matters among the rankings from the people who know best, and one fact emerges—this city, and many of the smaller cities in the metro area, are truly some of the best places to live and do business in the nation.

Following is an abbreviated compilation of all those accolades. Even the shortened list is exhausting, we admit. But, maybe you agree that of all the exhausting things in life, it’s notOso bad to be exhausted by a bounty of accolades.

IENNA, BARCELONA, AND Rome all have their charms, but I always relish a pilgrimage to Omaha. A city so renowned almost needs no introduction to globetrotters. Though Kansas City calls itself the “Paris of the Plains,” that crown truthfully belongs to its northern neighbor.

hosts Broadway-quality entertainment at Midwestern-cost-of-living ticket prices. For the literati, the childhood home of Willa Cather is only a brisk, five-hour drive away.

Like any Global City, Omaha has its own tourist season, which you may want to brave at your peril. In May, Berkshire Hathaway shareholders descend on the city, taking their turns by the hundreds to obstruct traffic and photograph the domicile of a guy named Warren Buffett, who apparently has a lot of money. June brings the College World Series, and southern dialects abound as fans of proverbial baseball powers from below the Mason-Dixon line search in vain for a good serving of grits.

A traveler’s first stop should be the Old Market on the banks of the Missouri River. Before the new parking rules went into effect, the waterfront was consistently named the “Best Place to Park and Avoid Paying an Extra $20 when Foreigner comes to the CenturyLink Center.” Savvy landmark hunters may also seek out a statue of the world’s most famous Italian chef looming over the Mighty Mo’ like a 5’6 Colossus of Rhodes.

Like the “Best of Omaha” awards affirm, the city is a foodie’s Mecca; and indeed, the city boasts international options that compete with New York and London. Gourmands will find no lack of satisfaction in the city’s countless offerings. That none have yet to receive a Michelin star reeks of conspiracy; evidently, they haven’t seen all of the gorgeous advertisements in this very publication.

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge also spans the river as a monument to Nebraska’s considerable political might, built from the crushed remains of the unicameral’s enemies.

It towers over Iowa as a constant reminder of their comparative unimportance in national affairs, at least once caucus season is over.

To be sure, the pedestrian bridge is a great destination for lovers; in fact, all of Omaha is for lovers, except for perhaps the stockyards.

If a romantic stroll is your goal, the Gene Leahy Mall stretches nearby, emulating the

national capital’s yet surpassing it largely for the good sense to feature adult-sized slides.

While you’re in the Old Market, a tour of the city’s Fortune 500 companies is in order.

Union Pacific brings an old world sensibility to downtown, hearkening to a time when locomotives, dirigibles, and those bicycles with the giant front wheel promised the future.

A quick trek up the street takes you to the neocolonial aesthetic of Midtown Crossing and the Mutual of Omaha building, though celebrity-seekers will be disappointed to learn Jim Fowler does not live on the premises; nor does any Serengeti wildlife, for that matter.

If culture’s your thing, the Joslyn Art Museum has a pretty good Jackson Pollock on display year round. Dilettantes may prefer the Orpheum Theater, which

So how do Omaha natives handle their status as a world-class city? With remarkable humility and poise. It seems that many locals have resisted the stereotypes and the hype, practically unaware of the countless riches that make their way of life the envy of the world.

Perhaps it is best that way.

Frequent Omaha Magazine contributor James Vnuk, as best as medical science can tell, is little more than a shambling mound of pop culture effluvia. Though he teaches composition, rhetoric, and English as a second language at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, lately it would seem his preferred genre is the brevity afforded by social media witticisms, endlessly searching for that perfect groaner. He spent a season or two behind the Great Firewall of China, but journeyed back to Nebraska to burden the prairies with his ruminations—of varying credulity—on media and culture. He loves low art, German opera, and his two guinea pigs.
