elcome, June! The 20th marks the start to summer, but this entire month treats us to plenty of sunlight and warm days to spend outside, so get out and enjoy it.
A few things you may want to add to your “to-do” list this month: attend an outdoor concert, make a quiet picnic in the park, and become a tourist in your own city. How many of us can say we truly know Omaha, inside and out? (I certainly can’t.) So, take some time to visit more than your normal hangout places. Discover new little restaurants and shops, landmarks you didn’t know were here… I think we’ll all be surprised by what our wonderful city has to offer. June also hosts that special day when we honor the men who hold that special role of fatherhood. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring Father’s Day be celebrated on the third Sunday in June, and it’s been a national holiday since. And what dad wouldn’t appreciate a day of relaxation and being treated to a special meal and some thoughtful gifts? This year, it just so happens that it lands on the same day as the summer solstice, June 20. Two reasons to celebrate! One more piece of advice: If you don’t have a vacation planned, just do it! Get away for a week, or even a few short days—it’s good for the soul. And bring this issue of OmahaHome with you for some fun, easy reads on edible flowers, a casual dining room makeover, a custom home inspired by the sea, and more. hile Roger and I certainly have big appetites and can work our way around a kitchen without setting fire to anything, no one would describe us as chefs or tremendous dinner-party hosts. Our less-thanformal eating habits were reflected in our past homes’ dining spaces—typically, compact areas meant to grab a quick meal, or highly styled rooms that put form over function.

But as with many households, the past year has transformed our dining behavior for the better. Instead of always eating on the go, we’ve been cooking and baking at home and enjoying leisurely meals. This time together at the dining table has been a good thing. The past year also inspired the direction we took in remaking our farmhouse dining room.

The room is the epitome of a passthrough space, connecting the entry and center stairway with the kitchen. While a traditional dining room layout would plop a table right in the center, we chose not to go this route, as it would impede movement through the house and, well, no one likes a traffic jam between two energetic Goldendoodles and two grumpy dudes trying to quickly haul in groceries. Our solution was to place a large rectangular table off-center toward the far end of the room. Instead of chairs on the far side, we built a wall-to-wall banquette with a leather bench and a backrest of oversized pillows. A mix of some favorite chairs rounds out the seating. We added character and durability with painted tongue-and-groove boards covering the lower two-thirds of the dining room walls. Custom-printed wallpaper from Poland featuring vintage illustrations of horses covers the remaining wall space. We used charcoalbronze paint to enhance the ceiling, and carried over the painted diamond pattern from the living room floor. A spindle-back bench gives us a place to sit and put on a pair of shoes, and a large wardrobe found in an online classified ad, repainted in a spring green, works as an improvised coat closet. Overhead track lighting was installed, with spot bulbs highlighting the art, and we positioned a Nelson bubble lamp over the dining table. The warm room not only invites frequent dining, but for guests to linger in converation long after the meal. Until next time, Roger and Chris, at Double Heart Farm. I
t started with an anniversary trip to the Napa Valley, perhaps the most well-known wine region in the U.S. Sally and Jim Zipursky visited in the summer 1992 to celebrate one year of wedded bliss. There, the couple’s favorite pastime bloomed among the ripening grapes—they became “wine people.” Today, Sally and Jim get equally excited about a crisp $6 rosé from Trader Joe’s as they do a rare and expensive vintage wine.

“We discovered our love of wine together, and it’s grown together,” Jim said. Since that first foray, the couple have traveled to various viticulture hot spots at least once or twice a year for nearly three decades. Destinations as varied as Portugal’s Douro Valley, California’s Sonoma County, Oregon’s famed Willamette Valley, and France’s Loire Valley have welcomed them and furthered their wine education. It was natural to collect wines on these trips, which led the pair to finally create a custom home wine cellar to properly store their worldly finds. At this moment, the duo’s expertly crafted basement wine cellar holds 682 bottles. “We’re a little heavy right now,” Sally said with a laugh, sharing that their wine collection tends to build when they aren’t entertaining (thanks to COVID19). Jim explained that he knew the exact number thanks to Cellar Tracker and Vino Cell, two apps that help wine cellar owners navigate their collections. Nicknamed “Cava Z,” a play on “casa” and the couple’s last name, the Zipursky cellar was completed in January 2020. (Cava is also the name of a sparkling Spanish wine that the couple enjoy.) Angela Larsen of Larsen Designs, a regular collaborator on the couple’s Candlewood home throughout 12 years of renovating, was tapped for the project. What resulted is a mix of sleek modern touches, such as a custom concrete table, paired with natural materials, including a cork floor, leather drawer pulls, and a white oak ceiling. Larsen explained, “The space itself is hidden away in the lower level. I wanted the room to be a surprise when the door is opened, and also to pay homage to the wine.”

Though there are two stools and space for wine tasting, the cellar wasn’t really designed to be a destination in itself; it exists primarily to properly store wine, with a not-so-cozy temperature range of 52 to 56 degrees and 55% to 60% humidity. There’s also a chocolate cupboard, since the Zipurskys occasionally enjoy a sweet treat with their vino. Additionally, the cellar offers storage for liquor bottles, freeing up space in the kitchen upstairs. A beverage fridge chills another Portuguese f ind, Vinho Verde—what Sally nicknamed “the soda pop of white wine”—as well as some sparkling, rosé, and other white wines. Various bottles, mostly from boutique producers who make less than 3,000 cases a year, fill the shelves that line the walls of Cava Z. The couple also stock some kosher wines, a nod to their Jewish faith.
More recently, the Zipurskys’ love of wine has grown into a family hobby, now that their twin children are grown. Throughout the pandemic, the couple organized virtual family wine tastings. Jim picks the wines, Sally chooses food pairings, and “we’ll sit on Zoom together for hours tasting wine,” she shared. And beautiful Cava Z? It’s there at the ready, offering a bevy of beverages for the sophisticated palate until the couple can again travel on their wine adventures.

MIKEY THOMPSON’S REHAB ADDICTION TURNING TRASH INTO MIDCENTURY TREASURE
“I
can’t stop re-doing things,” said Mikey Thompson, owner of M Mid Mod, maker of quality vintage and midcentury home furnishings. Thompson, who grew up in Omaha, said he’s always been a creative type, battling with his older brother in drawing competitions from a young age. During his time at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he transitioned to refurbishing old furniture, “creating out of necessity” as a poor college student. He’d dumpster dive or find neglected items left on curbs, give them new life, then use them for his own home. Eventually, he had enough pieces to begin selling the excess and set up a workshop at Revival in Benson in October 2019.
Today, Thompson works as a full-time maker, selling his pieces online via Instagram and at Dusk Goods & Gifts and The New Wave in Little Bohemia, downtown Omaha. With Revival’s storefront closing this month, he’s moved his workshop back home...temporarily, he hopes. (Revival will continue to sell online at revivalomaha.com) He finds furniture to make over from all around the metro area and especially loves a good estate sale. Connections with real estate friends have also been fruitful for the maker, as he sometimes helps clear out homes going up for sale, getting first dibs on large, older pieces with great potential. He’s even bought vintage pieces as far away as Kansas, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado, typically spotted while on vacation. Hardware for his furniture is found on Amazon or Etsy.

Thompson said his furniture rehab addiction is fueled by two things. He loves the artistic side of his work, which he calls “the art of creating things.” But most of all, he enjoys taking pieces destined for the landfill and turning them into something that people want in their home. The sustainability side, informed by a concentration on the subject while earning his degree at UNO, is the major driver for Thompson. “If I can keep someone from buying something new,
if I can keep something out of the landfill, then I’ve done my job,” he explained. Revival proprietor Steph Lambert has loved working with the furniture restoration specialist. She said, “Mikey’s work has significantly increased sales across the board, not only for me, but for other artists who sell in the shop as well. His pieces draw people in who may otherwise have not known about us.” And the timing worked out for everyone involved. Lambert continued, “I’m not sure if serendipitous is the right way to describe it, but within a few short months [of working together] the pandemic hit, and I had to stop buying clothing for my buy-selltrade business, which put my side of the business to a grinding halt. I didn’t see it coming back any time soon, but I was able to keep the shop running because Mikey was able to expand his business footprint in the shop (we moved my clothing aside for him to bring in more furniture). So, I feel very fortunate to work with him.” And work he does. At any given time, Thompson can be rehabbing up to five pieces, which he tackles with an assembly-line system. Gather, prep, seal, paint, seal again. Plus, after years trying different paint lines, the M Mid Mod owner has finally found his winner: BB Frosh paint transformer, which can give normal latex paint the sticking power of chalk paint. Thompson combines that product with Sherwin Williams for a full array of colors. What’s in Thompson’s workshop now? At press time, the maker was busy transforming a passion project, an old radio cabinet, into something bright and new. He’s also working with Black Awning, designer Bryan Frost’s business, on a custom project for their client. Collaborating is exciting, he said, and the next step in his rehabbing journey. ost people carefully choose their homes. But Shirley and John Simons feel as if their split-level abode on a country road in Yutan, Nebraska, chose them. “We owned an old home in Yutan that we had completely remodeled,” John recalled. “The older man who owned this house— he had a big white beard, looked just like Santa Claus— approached us and said, ‘My wife and I would like you to buy our house because we know you will take care of it.’” That was 23 years ago, and the Simonses have more than lived up to their promise to take care of the place. In fact, they’ve given the home, which sits on a scenic 10 acres, a whole new lease on life.

Built in 1970, most of the home’s original features reflected the vernacular of that era: smaller rooms connected by arched entryways; an oversized stone f ireplace; heavy, dark woodwork; and a formal dining room and living room off the entry that no one ever used. Though the main living area had a western exposure that should have allowed for sweeping views of Nebraska sunsets, an attached covered porch off the kitchen darkened the space and provided a closed-in feeling. “When the family came to visit, I used to always feel stuck in the kitchen,” Shirley said, explaining her clan consists of three children and 11 grandchildren. “I wanted

to open it all up so we could be together.” “Shirley and John wanted a space that was light and airy and ref lected their personalities more,” added Kelly Grimm, lead designer at Lee Douglas Interiors, who worked with the Simonses on their home. “We wanted to give them an open concept and let the light shine in. And, most importantly, we wanted to give Shirley the kitchen of her dreams.” The result is a transitional look that mixes clean lines, a rustic ranch style, antiques John treasure-hunted from all over the country, and art that Shirley purchased on a trip to Kenya.
In the kitchen, custom white f loor-to-ceiling cabinets and a gleaming white subway tile backsplash are illuminated with LED lighting, brightening the space. T he couple planned to incorporate a walk-in pantry, but realized they would have to give up a lot of space to achieve that goal. Instead, they chose a wall pantry
with touch-to-open cabinets and pull-out shelving, including one deep shelf where Shirley, an avid baker, stores her stand mixer. The kitchen island, with its dark wood cabinetry and lantern-style pendant lights, is crowned with a Cambria quartz countertop that has a river of gold veining with subtle purple flecks. “I love that there’s a little purple tinge to it,” Shirley said. “It picks up on the art around the room.” In addition to John’s antiques and Shirley’s African art, the couple sourced decor pieces from Hearts & Fire and House of J, both in Omaha. It was important for the Simonses to work with local tradespeople—many of whom are from families they’ve known their whole lives. Their general contractor was Yutan-based John Hrabik of Home Renovators, Inc., while the plumbing was done by All Star Plumbing, also of Yutan. Trede Electric from Ralston handled all the wiring, and Omaha’s Prestige Construction is finishing their lower level. The heavy oak railing on the stairs in their entryway was replaced with a modern custom rail by Bender Ornamental in Omaha. An earlier project, the home’s landscaping, used bricks salvaged from the former Yutan jail, which the Simonses dismantled themselves. Their adult kids chipped in as well. The family has always had a reputation for working hard. “We owned a lawn service, bagged f irewood for gas stations, cleaned the high school…All in addition to my parents working full-time jobs,” said daughter Brenda Pietig of Elkhorn. Pietig worked closely with her parents, designer Grimm, and the contractors on the home remodel.

One of the home’s pièces de resistance is an antique library cabinet from the early 1900s that originally belonged to a Yutan banker. Like the house itself, the cabinet ended up with the Simonses because the previous owners knew the family would give it the love it deserved. Their son, now in his 40s, restored it as a high school project. Today, it serves as the family’s china hutch and resides in the former dining room, which is now an open-concept office for Shirley, who recently retired after a 37-year career at Valmont Industries. Throughout the home are practical, smart features, such as luxury vinyl plank (LVP) f looring, which is waterproof and an easier-tocare-for choice than wood, and a safer, more level surface than carpeting or rugs. All the window shades are electric, and the lighting is all on dimmer switches. “I don’t think I would have thought to do that,” John said. “But beyond that, I can’t think of any other features that are ‘smart.’” Shirley didn’t skip a beat. Sitting in her chic, bright new living room, across from the man she’s loved for more than 50 years, she quipped, “Well, there’s us!”

AT HOME THERE IS NO STERN. NO SAILS. NO WATER IN SIGHT. For all intents and purposes, Greg and Melinda Burnett’s home is the absolute furthest from what most would call a houseboat—but all it takes is a closer look. It’s the details that redefine everything. Stretching from one end of the house to the other is the open-concept kitchen and living room. Step inside and it’s all clean lines with neutral colors broken up by pops of red. It appears this is a normal contemporary home until the inspiration behind some of the more unique pieces reveals itself. Take the two different sets of countertops, for example. One is bespeckled with blues and beiges representing the ocean and Earth, while the kitchen island is covered in a shimmering black symbolizing the night sky. Inspired features such as these adorn the abode throughout. The space includes lighting fixtures in shapes reminiscent of jellyfish, a primary bedroom accent wall painted the colors of foaming island waves, windows everywhere to let in natural light like an actual boat. This 3,885-square-foot structure, built by Gaver Custom Homes, houses five bedrooms and four baths, and every inch is reflective of the colorful life lived by the family who inhabit its four walls. “Before moving to Nebraska, we were from Minnesota by way of the Caribbean,” Greg said.

Three years ago, the family moved to Omaha after living on a catamaran sailboat for two years and in Minnesota before that. Life on deck wasn’t spent anchored to some dock either. The Burnetts started in Florida, then voyaged down to Colombia, South America, through the Caribbean, and even across the Atlantic.

Today, Melinda is a neurologist with CHI Health Clinic. Greg is a retired business owner. The couple live with their two teenage children and two cats. Their new home may be tucked within in an idyllic Omaha suburb—far away from any shoreline and without any ability to float whatsoever—but the interior was made to reflect their time as sailors on the seas.

“We are designers at heart. Even if I don’t have the skills, I can appreciate the creative process of making something your own,” Melinda said. “After our last remodel, we learned it’s so hard to ‘beat’ something exactly to the place you want. This time we just started from scratch.”
That process, building from the ground up, took the Burnetts two full years to complete. They broke ground in November 2018 and moved in November 2020. While there weren’t any major hiccups while building, the process took longer than originally planned due to the custom nature of the home. In fact, they went through more than 30 iterations of the house during the design process alone. Not only did the Burnetts want touches that harken back to their time on the ocean blue, they wanted an energy-efficient home that was inexpensive to heat and cool.
“It’s very much a house built just for Greg and Melinda,” said Steven Ginn of Steven Ginn Architects. “It’s a house for people who spent years on a boat and then became landlocked.

One way the home embraces “green building” that’s good for the environment is the army of solar panels that line the roof. The property produces as much as 14 kilowatts from 35 panels, which is enough energy to not only power the electricity inside, but often generates some excess that’s sold back to OPPD at a wholesale price. “We usually generate enough power to cover our use from April to October,” Greg said. The exterior of the house, made entirely of stucco, is simple yet statementmaking—a gray-and-white rectangle with a tower that intersects at just the right place. “The front of the home faces west and it’s set where the road comes and turns at a right angle. It’s the focal point,” Ginn said. “That’s why we placed the tower aligned with the street. It was intentional to enforce the street’s facade.”

For Greg, it was important that every aspect of the home serve both form and function. If something is in the space, it should not only look good but do some good, too. “Of course you want something that’s pretty, but it’s more important it work well,” Greg said. “My overall design principle is functionality meets beauty. That just takes time to construct and that’s OK.” A perfect example of how this principle played into the home design is the inclusion of its many windows. Since they line the walls on the main floor, sunshine floods into the house and the family rarely needs lights on throughout the day. “We are not cave people,” Melinda said. “Our boat had windows all the way around, so we always felt like we were outside. That’s what we wanted—an indoor and outdoor experience.” Two other unique parts of the home bring the Burnetts that binary experience. First is their art deco lounge. Plush seating, a full bar, and a sleek fireplace open up to the backyard pool via a garage door wall. With the push of a button, the wall rises and the indoors and outdoors are linked. They also have a sunset tower that allows them to access the roof and maintain the solar panels. When the family called a catamaran home, they would watch the sunset each night. Now they can do the same in Omaha from new heights. “Not everyone in Omaha is similar, so there is an underserved population that craves contemporary design and something unique,” Melinda said. “This house meets that. It sails forward, not looking back.”

en years ago, the Osborns moved two doors down from the home of their dreams.
The family of five bought a handsome house in a lakeside community in Waterloo, Nebraska. Community happy hours took Stacie and Shane Osborn to other lakeside homes, and they fell in love with a neighbor’s place. Fast forward to 2019, and the nearby dream house was on the market. The Osborns jumped at the opportunity and purchased the place they’d admired for years. “Our old house had a different feel,” Stacie said. “We loved it, but it was darker woods and colors. This [new home] definitely had more of a beachy feel, with the brights and whites and all the windows with light coming in.” As the family planned their transition to the new place down the shore, they recognized the need to hire designers for such a drastic style change. They reached out to Fluff Interiors of Omaha in May 2019. “What I loved about their process was that they came over, blank slate, and just started asking questions,” Stacie said. “We filled out sheets of what we liked to do as a family, what were our side hobbies, etc. We love to travel. We went with a ‘Hamptons meets Nebraska’ theme, so downstairs there are lots of blues and beach colors.”

Upstairs is a cluster of rooms for the couple’s three teenage girls. The sisters’ floor includes three single bedrooms, each designed for that girl’s unique tastes and hobbies and with its own en suite bath, and a shared hangout space. “We knew moving here, at the ages that they were, this was going to be the last [room] makeover before college. So, we wanted something youthful that would last them before they went off,” Stacie said. Enter Fluff designer Lorrie Williams. “The parents were fully on board with letting them choose,” Williams remembered. “It’s so great to do spaces that reflect personalities and not impose designers’ or Mom’s or Dad’s ideas. We had everything from super glam to playful.” At 14, Addison is the youngest.
Alyssa is the middle daughter, at 15. “She is the social butterfly and one who I approve my outfits with before I leave the house,” Stacie noted. “Our phrase for her was ‘future influencer,’” Williams added. “She loved all things girly and makeup, and following along with people on social media.” Fluff chose a soft lilac and leafy wallpaper for Alyssa’s bedroom, a big change from the zebra-print walls of her old room. Her carpets and blankets are plush, her space is lit with a drop chandelier, and her nook has sliding drawers for extra storage. Isabella is the eldest sister at 17.
“She’s our fun-loving, lighthearted sports girl. She wanted something colorful that she could relax in and enjoy,” Stacie said.
“Bella’s room is playful and transitional. We added lots of black-andwhite elements that weren’t super girly,” Williams said.
Addison’s room is a light teal with worn beach wood and various fabrics and patterns dotted around her space. Her reading nook looks out onto the water.
“She’s our shoe collector with the biggest closet, and loves dogs. We had a picture of Goldie [the family’s esteemed mini goldendoodle] and they did this watercolor of her,” Stacie said, pointing to a pop art canvas print that Fluff had made from the photo. “It’s one of the favorite things in the whole house.” Stacie then pointed to a door draped with curtains. “She has a little balcony. It’s very Tangledish,” she said, referencing the Disney princess flick.
“Some of the art on the walls were things she did herself,” Williams said. “She may rotate things out, but we wanted to display those.” There’s a large, magnetic marker board in her nook space, useful for her doodling and Shakespearean sonnet memorization.

“We think as much about function as we do form. We try to make the home livable and lovely,” Williams remarked.

Each of the tiny glass bulbs in Bella’s chandelier were installed by the Fluff team. Her desk doubles as a vanity, and her rose-colored walls are paired with neutral grays and cozy creams. The final space on the floor is what they call the bonus room, designed with an atmosphere for hanging out with friends, watching movies, and playing Mario Kart on the Nintendo Wii. The couch is deep—as big as a single bed—so the girls can host friends for slumber parties. “It doesn’t take a lot of convincing to get their friends to come out here,” Shane noted. “I have a feeling this summer is going to be a revolving door with teenage kids. Whatever we can do to spend time with them.” “Fluff did everything down to the shampoos in the showers, every last detail,” Stacie remembered. “We brought no furniture, just our personal items. When the floods happened [referencing the historic flooding in western Douglas County in spring 2019], we were within days of taking over the new house. So we ended up donating a lot of things, like our couches, to someone who lost everything. It was good timing in that aspect, that we could actually do some good with it.” When the space was finally finished, and the clothes and personal things had been walked or wagon-wheeled down the street, Fluff brought in photographers to capture the girls’ reactions seeing their rooms for the first time. Their faces are surprised, enthused, and dreamy. “Fluff did such a good job, there’s nothing I ever want to change,” Stacie said.
“WHEN THE FLOODS HAPPENED, WE WERE WITHIN DAYS OF TAKING OVER THE NEW HOUSE. SO WE ENDED UP DONATING A LOT OF THINGS, LIKE OUR COUCHES, TO SOMEONE WHO LOST EVERYTHING.”

La Bella Casa in Midtown An Italian Renaissance Revival by Latenser Lives On
“W
e Don’t Coast” may be the Greater Omaha Chamber’s latest slogan, but at the turn of the 20th century, Omaha’s Gold Coast was the place to be. Today listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the elite neighborhood sprung up on hills overlooking downtown in the 1880s and housed the bustling city’s financial and cultural leaders of the day.
Reinhold B. Busch, vice president of the steam, gas, and water business Crane Co., joined the neighborhood in 1908 after hiring architect John Latenser, Sr. to build him a house on 38th Street. Connected to downtown by Dr. Sam Mercer’s electric streetcar, the mansions, single-family homes and, later, apartments were built “out west” by business owners, doctors, and other professionals looking to escape the noise of the city. Heather Gomes and Mac McLaughlin bought the historic home for their growing family in 2012.

“People who live in this neighborhood love and appreciate the history of these homes,” McLaughlin said. “[Ours] was well built, well designed, and well taken care of over the years.” The house has 5,762 square feet spread over 14 rooms, including six bedrooms, and sits on a half-acre corner lot. Despite two-lane streets on two sides, the home’s formal garden, with high hedges and mature spruce trees, obscures noise and provides privacy.

A faux carriage house acts as a detached garage, and the back patio sits above an additional parking garage added later. The home’s brick masonry with limestone quoins, or larger bricks used to accent corners, is typical of the Italian Renaissance style for residential homes. The symmetrical facade is dominated by three bays on the ground floor and a centered balcony with balusters, or ornate columns topped by a rail. The hipped roof is lined with a decorative parapet, or low wall, that imitates the square pattern atop a
defensive castle. These classical details brought elements of Italian architecture— especially those of the Medici in Florence— into new buildings in America. Architect Latenser quickly established himself in the U.S. after emigrating from Liechtenstein, moving to Chicago, and eventually opening his own firm in Omaha. Over his 50-year career, he

shaped the Omaha cityscape, helping design Central High School, the Douglas County Courthouse, and other prominent buildings. Latenser incorporated metalwork into the Busch home’s revival style, most evidently in the ornate porte cochere, or large, cast-iron overhang that protects guests unloading from a carriage from the elements. The massive cornice, with block medallions and dentils, or teeth-like stone moldings, is the dominant feature of the home’s facade. The limestone panels and quoins contrast with the red brick, as does the architrave, or molding framing the door. The central jack arch window is framed by freestanding, detailed columns whose simple capital soften the facade.

“The detail in the house we didn’t appreciate as children...[Not] until you get in your own house and you think, is that all?” Novatny said. Details such as the diamond-paned transom windows, floral- and shellpatterned door hinges, decorative corbels, and keystones on arches add more interesting elements to the facade. “You have a lot of modern amenities [in this residence],” said real estate agent Corky Grimes, the only man to sell the house twice, “but over the life of the home it never lost its character.”

Passersby may spy a fiery rose emerging from a sea of green leaves and draw nearer for a better view. Some will be taken in by the fragrance and lean in to inhale the bold aromatic. Still, others might reach out a hand to feel the velvet-like blooms. But most will not consider the complexity the petals might provide the palate. Roses and many other flowers easily grown in Nebraska can add unique character to beverages and food dishes, such as salads. It should come as no surprise that an edible flower’s flavor is similar to its fragrance, although the flavor is far more complex. Not all flowers are edible (beware, as some flowers are poisonous), however; and those that are should be carefully selected.

According to the University of NebraskaLincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Edible Flowers Guide, those who wish to use edible flowers in dishes should abstain from using chemical treatments and pesticides, and should only utilize flowers grown for the purpose of eating (not grown in nurseries). Additionally, those with pollen sensitivities should avoid them. West Coast Seeds, a distributor of seeds of all kinds, reports that edible flowers are best harvested in the morning. In addition, they should be fresh, rinsed, stemmed, and most should have the stamens removed prior to consumption. Wilting flowers may be rejuvenated with an ice-water bath. Below is a list of flowers that grow well in Nebraska’s climate and lend themselves to culinary delights and craft cocktails (courtesy of the Edible Flowers Guide.) Each flower has both a pleasant appearance and a unique flavor profile to garnish with a special touch.
BASIL (Ocimum basilicum): the flowers are
small and indistinct with an herbal aroma, and can be a bit spicy.
BEE BALM (Monarda): the globe-shaped
head contains many minute flowers in a variety of colors; its taste hints of sweet mint.

This project’s test was getting the f loor plan to f it the tub, the steam shower, and all of the glass while still making the design architecturally and aesthetically pleasing. Managing the sequence of construction, making sure the door way was wide enough to accommodate tub installation, and moving walls to steal space from the primary bedroom were required. Thoughtful attention to detail, expert craftsmanship, and high-end materials all contributed to the beauty and success of this project. The result is a fabulous spa-like retreat.
