t is your choice. Those words are a welcome sound to my ears. However, I know what it can be like to be overwhelmed with decision-making. We make what seem to be a million decisions every day, from the miniscule decisions to life-changing decisions.

When I say it’s your choice, I am referring to where you have your vehicle repaired. Some insurance companies may try to tell you that you have to have your vehicle repaired at one of their preferred shops. This is not the case. It is your right to choose your repair shop. Do your homework and find out about the body shops in your area. Do they offer a lifetime warranty? Are the technicians doing continuing education? Your insurance company may offer a warranty; but remember, they are not the ones doing the work on your vehicle. If there is a problem, you are going to be dealing with the body shop to make it right, not the insurance company.

It is truly in your best interest to take the time to make the decision about where your vehicle is repaired. Don’t just go to a body shop because it is on the preferred list of your insurer—do your homework first.

as the busy season gone by without precious girl time? Family vacations and work sometimes get in the way of reconnecting with friends. Get outside and squeeze out that last bit of summer with these Girls’ Getaways right here in Omaha!

The Riverfront Wine Festival, August 24 and 25, is an open-air festival for the wine aficionado and neophyte alike. The event features over 150 different wines, live music, craft beer tastings, and more. Originally held at the riverfront, thus its name, the festival is staged at Stinson Park at Aksarben Village, 67th & Center sts. Designated-driver tickets (for those who wish to come and enjoy the food and entertainment, sans alcohol) are available at the door as well.

The Rockbrook Village 41st Annual Art Fair, September 8 and 9, is a free event, no tickets necessary. Just attend and meet over 150 national, regional, and local artists displaying their original creations available for purchase. The event will also feature a food court with selections from Rockbrook Village food merchants. Event times: Saturday, 10am6pm, and Sunday, 10am-5pm.

The Lauritzen Gardens Antique & Garden Show, September 21 through 23, is a three-day showcase of experts in various fields, including antiques, gardening, design, and art. Entering its ninth year, the show features educational experiences, fabulous ideas, www.ReadOnlineNow.com

From Soldier to Student

Artist Ronee Smith’s Journey from Taji to Teaching

ow that she is an art student and no longer a soldier in Iraq, Ronee Smith’s artistic side can flourish.

Smith served one year in Iraq from 2007-2008, where she worked as a graphic artist and photographer for the Army National Guard. Stationed in Taji, located 45 minutes north of Baghdad, she worked behind a desk designing websites, newsletters, and taking unit photos.

She’s glad she never once had to use her rifle. “At first, I was frightened by the bombings,” she said. “But the longer you’re there, the more you learn to always be aware, be on your toes, stay disciplined, and think quickly.” Although she’s not from a traditional military family, Smith was part of a National Guard supply unit that offered support to U.S. forces. She is grateful that her service to her country is now paying her college tuition.

When she returned home to Papillion in 2008, she took a year off to contemplate what she would do after serving eight years in the Nebraska National Guard. Smith had enlisted as a recent graduate of Papillion-La Vista high school. She went to boot camp in Fort Jackson, S.C., and Ft. Mead, Md. The young artist with asymmetrical red hair kept thinking how much she admired her aunt, Linda Perez, an artist who works with www.OmahaPublications.com

ind the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands and instructs on Mexican folk art and storytelling. Since childhood, Smith has always loved to draw. She remembers her mother would keep paper and colored pens in her purse so that young Ronee could sketch her family members and pets.

Smith was recently accepted into the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program, where she will concentrate on drawing with a teaching endorsement. For the next year and a half, she will take independent study classes and be able to create her artwork in the naturally lit classrooms and studio spaces at UNO. Ultimately, Smith would like to teach art at the high school level. She’s taught an afterschool program but looks forward to more formalized classroom training.

Her portfolio displays her versatility. She uses all mediums: oils, pastels, spray-paint, watercolors, pen and ink, photography, computer graphics, and pencil. She often uses wood rather than canvas. She’s greatly influenced by street art, curving figures, fashion magazines, hands, faces, and Halloween.

Reoccurring images often include skulls and an octopus. She strongly identifies with the memorial art objects used in the Dia de los Muertos or “Day of the Dead” annual celebration.

“I like the bright colors, portraits, golden flowers, paper cutouts, and skeletons,” she explained, perhaps in part because it helps her identify with her family’s Mexican heritage.

One of her signature pieces is a young girl’s face drawn in pencil, enclosed in a curvaceous golden frame she found in a thrift store. Another is a computer graphic— enhanced portrait of her Hispanic grandmother from Texas.

Even though she has now sold one piece of work, Smith does not title or sign her pieces.

That may change, she said, if her work is exhibited on the walls of a local coffee shop this summer.

In the meantime, she’ll still be working at both locations of the art/gift shop, The Afternoon, a job she loves almost as much as art.

o recognize significant contributions in our community by an individual dedicated to volunteer service, last year we instituted the Big Giver Award.

It has been well documented that Omaha is a city of givers both in time and talent. By publishing this issue and by presenting this award, we wish to further draw attention to the many opportunities that exist within our community to make a positive influence toward others.

This year, it is our pleasure to present this award to Shawna Smith for her service with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands.

Shawna Smith is a 30-year-old single woman with her MBA. She works as a Human Resource Specialist at Union Pacific Railroad Company. Not only does she mentor a “Little Sister” with BBBS, she does other volunteer work as well. Said Smith, “I volunteer with various activities that my company participates in. I also volunteer at my church with our annual Summer Fun Dayz Community Outreach. In the near future, I plan on helping serve food to the homeless and hand out food at a local food pantry. I believe we all can make a difference in some way. I’m always looking for ways to make a difference in the community in which I live.”

After raising money for BBBS event Bowling for Kids Sake, Smith decided to become a mentor in early 2011. She described the process: “I met and had an interview with a BBBS Matching Specialist at my home. During the interview, I advised things that I enjoyed doing, as well as things that I disliked. I was also given the opportunity to express to BBBS what age range I wanted my Little Sister to be. After interviewing with the Match Specialist, BBBS sorted through all the applications and matched me with a Little who shared similar characteristics and interests as myself. BBBS did a great job matching me up with my Little, as we are so similar in many ways and really enjoy hanging out together.” Potential BBBS volunteers undergo background checks as well for the safety of the children. Smith added, “Some skills that I bring to my mentoring relationship are that I’m very easygoing and flexible. I’m also a very supportive person. I love to support my Little Sister in whatever she’s doing.”

Smith underestimated the investment she would make in mentoring. She said, “Being a newbie to mentoring, I thought I would just make such a huge impact to a child and that would be it. However, in reality my Little has made a tremendous impact in my life. She has taught me so much about myself. All my family back in my hometown knows about my Little Sister. I talk so much about her that my younger sister said she needs to meet the Little who has taken her place as my little sister.” The Big/Little pair enjoy playing in the park, eating at different restaurants, playing Wii at Smith’s house, bowling, skating, and shopping. According to BBBS, the program has a measurable, positive impact on children’s lives. In a nationwide study, Little Brothers and Little Sisters were: • 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs • 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol • 52 percent less likely to skip school • 37 percent less likely to skip a class • more confident of their performance in schoolwork • one-third less likely to hit someone • getting along better with their families

Not only has Smith seen changes in her Little, she has seen changes in herself. Said Smith, “Mentoring has taught me so much about myself, such as learning what strengths I have and things I should work on to better myself.

It has given me the opportunity to make a positive impact in my Little’s life; and this is something I don’t take lightly at all.

I truly value this opportunity. It gives me such a sense of pride and self accomplishment because of the difference I’m easily able to make by just giving up a few hours every month to mentor a child in my community. I look forward to hanging out with my Little and just being a friend to her!”

Each day, Open Door Mission’s campus offers 816 safe, shelter beds to homeless men, women and children, serves over 1,800 hot, nutritious meals and provides preventive measures to more than 275 people living in poverty.

PAY IT FORWARD Our need is greater today than in any other year in the Mission’s history. The Rebuilding Lives Campaign is creating a campus with safe shelter for men, women, and children. Open Door Mission continues to provide the tools to empower them to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.

Phase I of the Rebuilding Lives Campaign was the Lydia House, which opened in January 2010 and www.ReadOnlineNow.com

provides shelter and programs to 72 single women and 46 families.

Phase II, Permanent Support Housing, provides 41, two-and three-bedroom apartments to allow for a safe, stable environment for men, women, and children to live during their transition from homeless to independence. This facility opened in June 2011.

Phase III is a new Garland Thompson Men’s Center and Rebuilding Lives Center, which provides shelter and programs to over 400 men. The Garland Thompson Men’s Center opened in May 2012, and the Rebuilding Lives Center is scheduled to open in the fall. Open Door Mission is still raising funds for the final phase of the Rebuilding Lives Campaign. There is only $1.2 million needed to complete this project and cut the ribbon debt-free.

The Timberlake Outreach Center offers low-income families and individuals the opportunity to supplement their income, empowering them to remain in their own homes and prevent homelessness. Residents can receive clothing, furniture, appliances, food, plus educational and life-skills classes, such as GED, ESL, parenting, and case management. OneWorld is now the largest provider of primary health care services in South Omaha and is the only primary care clinic that has a majority bilingual and bicultural staff, a sliding fee scale for low-income patients without insurance, entitlement enrollment, on-site pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, and vision services all under one roof. OneWorld hosts satellite locations and partners with the Ronald McDonald House Charities on the Caremobile (a mobile dental van). Talk about unique! The Nebraska Children’s Home Society has the distinction of being the only agency in the nation that has never charged fees for its adoption services for more than 119 years. It primarily relies on donors to continue this tradition. While adoption is a big part of its mission, it is only one among many child focused services the Children’s Home offers at nine locations across the state. In fact, about two out of every three women who turn to NCHS for assistance with an unplanned pregnancy receive services to support them as parents. The organization offers no-cost pregnancy services, foster care, one-on-one services to young parents, early childhood education, and teen programs that focus on prevention of pregnancy and life skill development.

usan Spomer had been a training specialist at a local retail company for more than 15 years. She knew the job like the back of her hand. So when she started having difficulties training new employees and completing simple tasks, she knew something wasn’t right.

Her thoughts quickly turned to memories of her own mother, who began developing early symptoms of Alzheimer’s in her late 40s. An appointment with Daniel Murman, M.D., a neurologist who specializes in Alzheimer’s at The Nebraska Medical Center, confirmed her suspicions.

“I was not surprised,” says Spomer, who was 60 at the time. “I knew something was up. I was sad and somewhat scared. But I’ve always tried to maintain a positive attitude >>

Spomer is part of a growing number of adults with Alzheimer’s disease, a form of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior that grows worse with time. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting approximately 13 percent of people age 65 and older and nearly 50 percent of Daniel Murman, M.D., adults 85 and older. neurologist, The Nebraska Medical Center “It’s been called the silver tsunami,” says Deborah Conley, APRN-CNS, a gerontology clinical nurse specialist at Nebraska Methodist Hospital. “We have 76 million aging baby boomers, and the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is advancing age,” she says.

“There are currently 5 to 6 million people in the U.S. living with Alzheimer’s. In Nebraska alone, there are over 80,000 people with

Alzheimer’s—that’s enough to fill Memorial Stadium. If we continue at this rate, in 20 years we could have more than 60 percent of our population age 85 and older living with Alzheimer’s.”

Spomer belongs to a small subset of Alzheimer’s patients with early-onset disease, which means symptoms begin before age 65.

This group makes up just 4 percent of all Alzheimer’s patients. “If a family member gets Alzheimer’s before age 65, there is a greater tendency for a genetic link,” says Dr. Murman. “In the rare case of families with a genetic cause of Alzheimer’s disease, children of affected parents have a 50 percent chance of developing early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.”

Spomer has early diagnosis on her side. “With an early diagnosis, there is a greater likelihood to slow the progression of the disease with medications,” says Murman. The Nebraska Medical Center is currently involved in research to determine if immunotherapies can have an impact on slowing Alzheimer’s by removing excess amounts of the protein beta-amyloids in the brain, which appear to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. While doctors are hopeful, it is still too early to know.

Lifestyle choices as a whole also appear to play an important role in preventing or delaying one’s risk of Alzheimer’s and slowing its progression. This is something that Spomer is very in tune to. “I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I have it, but I’m not going to let it slow me down,” says Spomer. “I try to keep my mind and body as >>

m I dating you or your ex? Because he’s all we ever talk about.

Breaking up is hard to do. But does that mean we have to talk about the fact that your ex recently tweeted pictures of his new girlfriend? I understand that you were with him for three years and he broke your heart, but his new girlfriend can be filed under “not my problem.”

There’s only so long I can be compassionate about the fact that you got your heart broken. The proper way to handle the situation is to spend some time alone. Work on yourself. Go to yoga, focus on work, focus on family, or focus on you because, before you can be happy with another human being, you must be happy with yourself and content with your past relationship being just that—in the past.

I sincerely enjoy your company and find you incredibly attractive, but there’s only so long a human being can put up with this adjustment. I can let it slide for one or two dates and chalk it up to the fact that you’re nervous sitting across from someone other than the man you’ve been sitting across from for quite some time; but sooner rather than later, I’m going to need you to slide over to my side of the table.

Whiter Teeth, A Healthier Mouth!

M

ost Americans have a vision of their healthiest, youngest looking self! From fitting into skinny jeans to bright, white smiles in glossy magazines, everyone wants to look and feel their best. As a health-centered dentist, the question becomes not how to whiten dingy smiles, but rather is it safe or healthy to do so?

My perspective: Teeth whitening is a health-centered dental procedure! I believe in whitening smiles for better, overall dental health!

Why? Let’s take weight loss as an example. Healthy changes in diet and increased exercise can lead to the blessing of bagging clothes. When this happened for me, I felt elated, invigorated, and rewarded that my hard work had paid off—and I lost a few pounds. Likewise, I felt determined and motivated to maintain my newfound self. Sound familiar? Your dental health is no different.

The more you like your smile, the better you will care for your teeth. Research has shown those who whiten their teeth are more likely to floss and be better brushers than those who are indifferent to their tooth color. Whitening is safe when used correctly and most effective when monitored by a dental professional. The chemical consistency of whitening is also antibacterial, killing residual germs on or near the enamel surface.

To summarize, I believe teeth whitening encourages individuals to better care for their dental health. We all have the choice to maintain our teeth or lose them.

Through whitening, my hope is to help others smile brightly, knowing their dental future will be better because they did so!

To reduce your risk, the Alzheimer’s Association recommends the following: • Engage in physical activity on a regular basis, which can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 50 percent. It may also slow deterioration in those who have already started to develop symptoms of the disease.

• Keep your blood pressure under control.

• Manage your cholesterol levels. Those who have high cholesterol and high blood pressure may have up to six times the risk of developing dementia, according to a study of more than 1,500 adults.

• Adopt a brain-healthy diet. This is one that reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and is low in fat and cholesterol.

HDL, the good cholesterol, may help protect brain cells. Some studies point to the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, whole grains, and olive oil. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish such as salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, and sardines, appears to be especially beneficial in reducing Alzheimer’s risk.

• Manage your weight. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one study revealed that individuals who were obese in middle age were twice as likely to develop dementia later in life.

• Take supplements. The following supplements may help preserve and improve brain health: fish oil, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and magnesium.

• Engage in various forms of mental stimulation. Stay active throughout your lifetime by learning new things, engaging in new activities, and challenging your brain in different ways.

Try things like: games, puzzles, brainteasers, and memorization exercises. Vary your daily-living habits to create new brain pathways.

• Get quality sleep. Your brain needs good sleep to be able to function at its best. Lack of sleep can interfere with your ability to think, problem-solve, and remember things.

• Reduce stress in your life. Chronic or severe stress can take a toll on the body, damaging the brain’s ability to function as well.

• Stay socially active. Staying active appears to stimulate the brain.

Whether Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented is a question that is still not clear among doctors and researchers.

“We do know that what’s good for your heart is also good for your brain,” says Conley, “and that high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lack of exercise, and diabetes can increase your risk.”

If you suspect something is not right with a parent or loved one, Heather Morgan, M.D., family practitioner and geriatrician at Alegent Health Clinic, encourages you to seek medical advice.

“People often dismiss early symptoms of Alzheimer’s in their parents as a normal part of aging,” she says. “An individual’s memory may decline with age. When memory impairment is severe enough to interfere with daily functions like making appointments, taking www.OmahaPublications.com

medications, or managing a checkbook, an individual needs to be evaluated by their doctor.

“These symptoms do not necessarily mean your loved one has Alzheimer’s.

A person may be having trouble with their memory for other reasons, such as an adverse reaction to a medication, undiagnosed depression or anxiety, a sleep disorder, urinary tract infection, or pneumonia. Identifying Alzheimer’s disease early may not only help in slowing progression, but it will also allow family members to plan ahead and put measures in place to make sure their loved one is safe.

Conley recommends family members discuss the four A’s: information about Alzheimer’s and the disease process; Advanced directives, which are legal documents that allow one to convey their decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time; an Autopsy, which can confirm Alzheimer’s disease; and how you are going to Advocate for your loved one.

“It really takes a village to care for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease,” notes Conley. “So the earlier family members can discuss, plan, and anticipate, the smoother things will go.”

Top Early Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s disease The Alzheimer’s Association has identified the following 10 warning signs as early symptoms of Alzheimer’s: • Memory loss that disrupts daily life • Challenges in planning or solving problems • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work, or at leisure • Confusion with time or place • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships • New problems with words in speaking or writing • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps • Decreased or poor judgment • Withdrawal from work or social activities • Changes in mood and personality

Patio Party Checklist

ntertaining can be hectic, especially when you’re running around trying to keep things organized rather than socializing and having a good time with your guests. It’s always a good idea to make a checklist of all of the things you need to do before and during your party so that you don’t miss any important details that could stress you out later.

Here are tips for a summer and fall patio party: ❍❍ Advise your guests of the date, location, time/duration, the theme (if any), and the attire. ❍❍ Inspect outdoor furniture for quantity and condition. If you don’t have enough seating for your guests, local party stores have tables and chairs available to rent. ❍❍ If you’re barbequing, make sure the grill is in good working condition, clean, and has enough charcoal/propane. ❍❍ Set up a buffet station close to where your guests will be seated. Count the plates, cutlery, glassware, and napkins needed per person; set out the necessary serving dishes and silverware. Also, make sure the station will have people moving in one direction, so they don’t hold up the line. ❍❍ Set up a self-serve beverage station off to the side of your buffet in a shaded area. Include a variety of beverages (water, juice, soda, liquor, beer, and wine) with ice, glasses, and garnishes (lemon and/or limes). ❍❍ Always have a few appetizers along with fruit and veggie trays out before the main meal, as guests might come hungry. ❍❍ Keep desserts light and simple. Serve fruit, ice cream, or pastry goods that are easy to handle; or have guests bring their signature dessert.
