Banish Your Bare Walls

Choose wall art that fits the bill, without breaking the bank Many of us have them in our homes—boring, bare walls. Afraid we’ll make a decorating debacle, we leave them blank, sometimes for years!

Fear and indecision take over once we hit the stores, and nothing comes home. I have a term for this disorder: decorator paralysis.

So how does one overcome their interior design insecurity? Get educated! We asked professionals at two art galleries in town for tips on everything from choosing pieces to how to hang them to ideas for unique presentations. And they were happy to oblige! Our Q&A sources: Jean Imray with Dundee Gallery, and Stephanie Plummer with Rick Anderson Gallery at Regency.

What is it that people fear about choosing wall art?

Imray: Where to start and cost. This can seem like an overwhelming task. Realize you don’t have to spend thousands to own original art. You can find artwork from $16 (small prints) on up.

And most galleries will let you take work home on approval so you can see if it works in your space.

Plummer: Many people are concerned that they’ll choose the wrong size or will not match current furnishings. We offer limited editions in multiple sizes to help resolve this dilemma.

What are some factors to consider when choosing wall art? Common mistakes people make?

Imray: Consider wall size. The most common mistake is choosing a piece that is too small. If you have a large wall, you need a large piece or several smaller pieces. (But if you love a piece and it’s too small, you’ll find another spot for it.)

And in my opinion, if you start matching your artwork too much to your room color/ scheme, your home will look like a hotel lobby. My motto when choosing art is find something you love…if it’s an investment, you’ll have it for a long time.

Plummer: I think the first consideration is the purpose of the room— will it be used for meetings, relaxation, dining…? Beautiful landscapes with soothing colors work well in spaces for relaxing and unwinding, while art for a dining or entertaining area should be convivial and inspire conversations.

There are many ways to coordinate art with existing design. For example, if your color palate is primarily neutral, then a vibrant, colorful image will add interest and focus to a room. Frequently texture is overlooked as a way to coordinate home furnishings with art. If a photo or painting depicts rugged, rocky surfaces, then this would perfectly compliment a natural stone floor or rustic furniture.

How is it best to determine the height at which to hang wall art? Method of hanging?

Imray: I advise to measure 62” from floor plus half the height of the painting minus the distance from the wire (or hanging device) to the top. That is where the nail goes. As for lighting, be careful about direct sunlight, as it could fade a painting or print. Museum glass will best protect a painting.

Plummer: You want to incorporate art into one’s home environment. Because art fosters enjoyment, its placement should be at or slightly below eye level. This can be complicated by home furnishings though, so there are a few tricks that can help…

Painter’s tape can also be used to outline the potential home for a work of art.

At our gallery, art sold goes home with the WallBuddy hanging system. WallBuddies allow clients to hang art without perfectly aligning hooks. They’re also excellent on large images because there’s no worry of a picture wire breaking.

What are a few fun, easy wall art display ideas?

Imray: Groupings of photographs is an easy and affordable way to fill space. I’ve also seen people frame fabrics to create accent pieces for a room.

Plummer: It’s always fun to show different depictions of the same theme. For example, if one of our collectors purchased a panoramic of New York City, I might suggest a close-up of the Empire State Building. Or if they want even more variety, a framed street map of that same city or a photo of an iconic sign. These give viewers a fun and different way to imagine themselves there.

What about lighting wall art?

Plummer: Lighting choices should always take into consideration the value of the work and its color composition. Ultra-violet rays, found in most lighting sources, but most significantly in direct, natural light, can have a devastating effect on art, because it causes colors to fade and become uneven. As a result, rare or valuable art can be irreversibly damaged. However, artificial lights can cast certain hues, such as yellow or blue, onto artwork, which affects the way we see the image. In any case, it is important to speak with your art dealer, gallery manager, or custom framer about the amount and type of UltraViolet protection your art needs. Many prints now come with UV resistant inks or museum quality glass, and art professionals are typically happy to share this information with clients.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

Expert advice for when you find yourself reeling from, er, dealing with divorce during the holidays.

No matter how you look at it, divorce is devastating. The stress, feelings of failure, and guilt—especially when there are kids involved—combined with the inevitable feelings of loneliness can be gut-wrenching.

Throw in a yuletide celebration with dozens of relatives and suddenly, what is supposed to be the “hap- hap- happiest time of the year,” is suddenly the antithesis of happy. When the “kids jinglebelling and everyone telling you to be of good cheer,” really starts to wear you down, perhaps it’s time for a bit of perspective, and some good advice from a few experts.

How to deal with kids and multiple schedules during the holidays Lawrence often gives her clients advice from Robert E. Emery’s book, The Truth about Children and Divorce. The author says the first thing to do is remember that the holidays are not all about you, and that your children deserve their celebrations even if you feel cheated out of yours. Encourage them to have a blast with their other parent, even if you can’t stand the idea of being alone. Reynolds adds, “It is important to establish a structured plan for the children’s schedule to reduce any potential chaos that often occurs during this season.” She also reminds clients Karrie Reynolds, M.S., CMHP, to make it a priority to refrain from CPC, NCC making negative comments about the other parent in the presence of the children. It seems obvious but in the middle of a divorce, it cannot be said enough to keep your kids out of earshot when trash talking. Simmons has her son Matthew nine months out of the year but has a custody arrangement that puts her son in a different state on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even his birthday, so she knows a thing or two about unique holiday arrangements. “To put things into perspective, these are just days on a calendar,” says Simmons. “My coping strategy is to walk through life thinking that each day is special.”

Dealing with divorce and the extended family Here, it is important to remember that a little preparation can go a long way. Lawrence recommends that you plan in advance and explain what you can and cannot do when it comes to visiting with family during this difficult time. Whether that means that you say no to certain invitations, spend the holidays differently than usual, or ask for your family’s understanding and help, is up to you…Just be sure to mention your plans before Aunt Elise gets offended that you cannot make the annual Hanukkah party.

As for what to tell the family when the marital situation has recently changed, Lawrence advises: “I believe it’s best to be honest and upfront with family members about an impending divorce, whether it’s around the holidays or not. Ususally,

[they’re] aware of the marital breakdown anyway, so it’s best not to hide it.” Telling family can often be painful and awkward, so she advises one should practice when and how they’re going to share the news - which details to share with which people, “It’s important to share the news first with the people who they think will be the most supportive of them and help them get through this difficult time,” she says. Reynolds points out that family and friends can show support by refraining from negative comments. “Children may be more vigilant during this time and therefore, it is necessary for adults to be self-aware of their own body language to be sure it is not presenting in a judgmental manner,” says Reynolds. Simmons adds that people need to realize that you never truly know what someone is dealing with at home, “Couples can put on a good show, and I was very good at maintaining the appearance of a successful career, home life, and relationship.” She says there is no room for judgment, and when it comes to divorce or separation, what is essential is support from loved ones - even when family is not excited about

So who are the experts? Amber Lawrence, LMHP, LMFT (Licensed Mental Health Practitioner, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist) is a happily married counselor who has been taking her own marital advice for almost 15 years. Karrie Reynolds, M.S., LMHP, CPC, NCC (Master of Science, Licensed Mental Health Practitioner, Certified Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor), is another therapist who freely admits to practicing what she preaches and has been married for 17 years. Richelle Simmons is a different kind of expert — one who’s learned from the School of Been There, Done That—and happily survived her own divorce after 10 years of not-so-blissful marriage. Here are their tips for keeping your sanity during this trying time over the holidays.

a divorce, or when religion says to stay together. Simmons is grateful when she says, “When it came down to being unhappily married, or happily divorced, my family was more supportive of the divorce.”

Beth Joselow, who divorced in 1991 after a 20-year marriage, makes these suggestions in Life Lessons: 50 Things I Learned From My Divorce: • Ask for support from your family, but don’t try to dictate their behavior toward your former mate. (If they have a loving relationship with your spouse, they may be torn between their loyalty to and their bond with him/her.)

• Be conscious of your family’s history with your former mate and of how they may be suffering the loss of your marriage along with you.

• If family members seem insensitive to you, it may be because they’re trying to work out their own feelings about the situation.

Let them know that you feel hurt, and give them a chance to rethink their attitudes.

Avoiding divorce is a great option, but remember, there is no room for shame if that is what happens. Sure, the holidays may be a little different, and the roles you play will change forever, but as Simmons said, being happily divorced is way better than being unhappy.

“What did I get myself into?” Jodie Hankins mentally chastised herself. She did not want to waste the energy it took to form words. It was her very first day of boot camp, and the fitness newbie admittedly thought she was going to die from all the running, squatting, and abs work. But she kept plugging away, making it through the first day and eventually the first camp.

Within the first month, she noticed the difference.

Co-workers asked what she was doing. Her shoulders achieved a toned, buff look she liked, and she began wearing more tank tops. Two years later, she has achieved her weight-loss goal of 20 pounds “and then some,” she adds. Hankins has whittled away body fat and inches, but more importantly, she has freed herself from the gaining/losing rut in which so many of us find ourselves.

When boot camps first were introduced to Omaha in the early 2000, they were still a novel approach to fitness. The camps began gaining steam, taking 12 HER • DECEMBER/JANUARY 2011 • WWW.READONLINENOW.COM

off in 2005, says Corey Cain, owner of Black Clover Fitness and founder of Omaha Boot Camp. Cain attributes a part of the boot camp’s success to accessibility. Sessions are held city-wide in metro parks during spring, summer and fall and local gyms during winter.

Typically, each workout lasts an hour. Sessions are offered from three to four days a week, in some cases daily. Boot camps can last a full month with a week break in between camps, as is the case with Omaha Boot Camp. Or, as with Lifetime Fitness, they can run a full 12 weeks. Since the body can acclimate to a set fitness regime, Jason Nold, assistant department head of personal training at Lifetime Fitness, likes to vary his workouts. “We… follow different principles every four weeks so our clients do not adapt to the same types of exercises so they continue to see results,” states Nold.

steers clear of set start and stop dates. “Anyone can join at any time,” he states. “We prefer to not have someone wait for a start date to begin their fitness journey with us.” He also adheres to the adage “different ways on different days.” Muscles have “memory.”

If you do not vary your exercise regime, muscles will essentially become so efficient that they do not have to work as hard. And when they stop working as hard, they burn fewer calories.

Tailoring exercise to an individual’s need is another key component of boot camp’s flexibility. Within one group, highly trained athletes run and tone alongside those just getting their feet wet in the fitness pond. If you have knee issues, then walking lunges are not the best exercise to build up leg muscles. Perhaps static lunges are a better choice. Those new to exercise often cannot run as extensively as seasoned exercisers. Instructors can, and should, accommodate different fitness levels. Erdkamp likens this individualized adaptation to receiving one-on-one personal training at a fraction of the cost.

Though men do sign up for boot camps, women in their 20s to 50s comprise a larger percentage of boot camp participants.

Our culture plays a role in this. Says Erdkamp: “Society places more pressure on women to be fit than it does on men. Women’s willingness to ask for help also is a factor. “Men typically do not like to have anyone directing their workouts, feeling they may know what to do or that boot camps won’t improve their strength and fitness,” Nold has witnessed during his years as a personal trainer.

This, however, is a fallacy. “All of the females in the class… know that boot camps are a great way to improve strength, body composition, and overall health and fitness,” continues Nold.

Hankins is certainly proof of this. Every summer she and her family go hiking in the mountains. Prior to attending boot camp, she

would have to train to go on vacation. Now she takes to the trails like a native Coloradan, much to the envy of her family and friends.

Another advantage of boot camps is the camaraderie participants experience, or as Cain puts it, the “group spirit mixed with individual goals.” Maintaining motivation is an important factor in an exercise regime’s success. It is easier to stay motivated in a group setting in which fellow participants can cheer you on during an interval run, encourage you during that one last rep, or challenge you to improve your endurance.

If you hear the phrase “boot camp” and the image of a redfaced drill sergeant bellowing at you to “drop and give me 50” terrifies you, breath easy. Yes, boot camp is challenging, but there is no hazing or intimidation involved, assures Cain. Nold agrees. Making class fun and energetic translates into success.

Participants get a boot-camp feel without an instructor berating them for taking a few seconds break or for slowing down at the very end of a class.

Until Hankins started attending boot camp, she underestimated her athleticism. Her advice to those just entertaining the thought of joining a boot camp: don’t be afraid to try it. “They will take you at your fitness level and help you achieve your goals. Yes, you can do it!”

A ‘cosmeceutical’ (cosmetics with pharmaceutical benefits) store has opened in west Omaha with mineral makeup and products available only through dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

When Cathy Hutfless began filling orders sent to the LovelySkin.com website that started in 1997, she worked in a tiny space behind a counter. Today, she and her staff of eight work in a spacious 10,000-square-foot area. It’s obvious that demand for cosmetic products sold on the Internet has taken off.

“We were one of the first nationally to sell skincare products and cosmeceuticals online,” says Dr. Joel Schlessinger, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon and president of LovelySkin. “The website concept was clearly an idea before its time, but now its time is here.”

Peggy Ritschel:

The Power of Art

Peggy Ritschel is wearing a T-shirt that reads “Power Full.”

When I ask what power she is filled with, she looks around the Northern Star Arts’ bay, with its welding equipment: supplies of mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper; drill press, sand blaster, plasma cutter, grinders and air compressor. There is a small glass shop and a nascent gallery. Cords overhead connect power tools to noise, and bring fire-breathing torches to life. The studio also sparks with the energy of students and assistants at work. “This,” she says, motioning with her eyes. “Making metal sculpture, especially for women, is empowering.” As the first welded-sculpture instructor at Metropolitan Community College, Ritschel is proud of the number of women who have taken her

courses and have made a presence in our community by making sculpture.

Public art is seen every day by everyday people who may rarely visit galleries and museums. Ritschel’s work is on view to eight million Village Pointe shoppers every year, the residents of Five Fountains subdivision in west Omaha, and families visiting Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji. Stop by El Aguila in south Omaha for enchiladas and enjoy Ritschel’s art at no extra charge.

In addition to the public arena, Ritschel’s work creates a presence in homes, businesses and church. Kim Jones, marketing director at Village Pointe, describes the sculpture there, Reaching, as an integral focal point. “We remove the sculpture in the fall for

seasonal displays in the roundabout, but when it is put back in place after the first of the year, it’s as if we’re seeing it again as a brand-new sculpture.” [Ritschel won the commission in a 2005 competition.]

Ritschel hopes that viewers enjoy her work.

If there is any underlying concept to Reaching, it is the urge to reach for the best we can be. “I enjoy flowing lines,” she says simply. “My ideas come from within…You don’t need an art degree to look at it and feel good.” Ritschel’s uncomplicated forms and philosophy belie the work involved in their fabrication. Reaching, 18 feet high, is made from ¼-inch-thick sheets of mild steel. Each of the five forms is composed of four pieces, shaped, welded together, painstakingly sanded and smoothed, then painted with Cadillac car finish. At the site, Ritschel cut the lighting apertures, made last-minute adjustments, and as a crane lowered each section, bolted it into place.

Ritschel enjoys a variety of commissions. El Aquila’s Janet Thornburg is delighted with the lilies, geckos and other naturalistic surprises flourishing on the restaurant’s patio gates and grillwork. Although ready-mades are probably available, Thornburg advocates doing business locally, and wanted specific designs realized by an artisan she could relate to and trust.

Ritschel, an L.A. transplant, is happy within the art community she has helped shape and the home she built in the Loess Hills. A former jewelry and stained-glass designer, she continues to make unique pieces upon special request.

Art has empowered her through life’s many challenges, good and bad. The T-shirt is a perfect fit. She leans against her purple pickup truck, describing upcoming projects and collaborations, the almost-finished gallery space, and growing interest in her classes. She looks at me and says with a smile, “How much better could it get?”

The shop, in Bel Air Plaza at 120th & West Center, specializes in women’s clothing from sizes 2 through 12, said owner Jennifer Johnson. In addition to tops, sweaters, leggings, jeans, dresses, purses and many other accessories, the store carries its own label of candles (bliss.lumiere), lotions (bliss.creme) and perfumes (bliss.scent).

“The biggest lesson I have learned about the retail world,” said Johnson, who has worked in sales and retail management for Gap, Target and other stores over a 20-year career, “is that the only constant is change and I thrive on that.

I love the challenge of being in tune with the economic climate and the customers…”

Johnson also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art, which aids her creative eye in putting together a unique and interesting shopping environment. Her store manager, Angie Rogers, makes frequent buying trips to Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and other markets to keep inventory fresh and up-todate, and “Angie and the entire staff are excellent at putting together outfits that fit, flatter and inspire their customers every day,” Johnson added.

Meanwhile, her assistant manager, Caitlyn Thorburn, stays on top of new merchandise and trends in other parts of the country thru the Internet, Facebook, and other social media. “[Caitlyn’s] found some great new products for us that have not been available [in Omaha] before,” Johnson said.

While keeping stock current and varied is definitely a priority at Bliss, topping the list is providing high-end service to clients, Johnson said. “My staff loves to meet new people and assist them with choosing the perfect outfit for themselves or that special gift for someone else. We’re a boutique that prides ourselves on providing excellent customer service, [while still offering] clothing that is affordable and on-trend.”

Johnson is also proud of the fact that Bliss has sponsored several special-event nights for charitable groups in recent months. On those nights, “We give a percentage of our sales back to the community, which is very rewarding,” Johnson said.

Patient Spreads Message of Hope for Brain Cancer Treatment Advances Improve Outlook Heather Roberts is a picture of hope. Diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 28 years old, such news would be enough to stop anyone in their tracks. But life has not stopped for Heather.

“Heather is very inspiring,” says her oncologist Irina Popa, MD, with Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center. “She continues to participate in activities with her family, to exercise and do all the things she enjoys. She has a fiance and a good job and keeps an extremely positive attitude.”

Hope is what Heather wants to give to others diagnosed with brain cancer. “Everyday they’re coming up with new advancements and that gives me so much hope,” says Heather, now 31 years old.

After completing treatment about a year ago, Heather’s condition is now considered stable. “You are never considered in remission with brain cancer.” Even so, Heather continues to maintain a positive attitude, “You can’t change it, so you just have to live with it.”

Heather was diagnosed with a stage III brain cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma in April of 2008. After several weeks of extremely intense headaches that were sometimes accompanied by vomiting, Heather went to her internist, who immediately ordered an MRI. A phone call from her doctors with the results took Heather’s breath away.

“I was at work when I got the news,” says Heather. “I immediately continued on page 31

Frontal headache pain. General fatigue. Tooth or jaw pain.

Sinus pain and pressure. A low-grade fever. These are classic signs of a sinus infection. SIs are most often the result of a cold virus, respiratory infection or allergy which causes excess mucus production and congestion in the nose and sinuses. If not cleared from the nasal passages, the mucus provides a breeding ground for bacteria. Inflammation and infection are the result. In rare cases, such infections may evolve into more serious conditions such as thrombosis or meningitis, requiring hospitalization.

Dr. Melissa Loseke, D.O., a family physician with the Methodist Clinic at Hawthorne Court, said when it comes to SIs, prevention is key. Drinking plenty of fluids, which helps keep secretions thinner and easier to expel from the body, is one mode of prevention. Of course, washing one’s hands and avoiding germs is of value to staying well. “And when you see signs of a cold or sinus issues coming on, put a humidifier in the room when you sleep to keep the nasal passages moist, and use OTC meds like saline spray and Ibuprofen or Tylenol.”

Loseke said while decongestants don’t work for everyone, they’re worth a try. For chronic SI sufferers, she recommends getting a prescripion for Flonase or Nasonex to keep sinuses in check.

So when are antibiotics a must? “Depends on the severity of the infection,” Loseke said. “Most colds and viruses last 7-10 days. If you’re not beginning to feel better by then, then it’s time to visit a doctor.”

One last tip: Use a Neti-pot—a teapot-like decanter filled with warm saline made from tap water and tablets—to pour through your nose and flush out your sinuses regularly. It will not only rinse away bacteria, but will help with congestion and breathing as well.

Because it was embedded so deep and because or the location, it was impossible to remove all of the tumor without risking permanent damage to the brain. A second surgery was performed a month and a half later to remove as much of the remaining cancer as possible.

Heather’s surgery was followed by six weeks of radiation and then 13 months of high-dose chemotherapy. Through it all, Heather maintained a upbeat. When she lost all of her hair, she refused to get depressed and didn’t even wear a wig. About halfway through continued on next page

HEALTHfocus her treatment regimen, Heather’s brain began to swell. To stop the swelling, Heather was put on steroids. She lost her hair and gained 50 pounds. Refusing to let it get her down, Heather joked and laughed about it.

Heather continues to be monitored every three months. She sees a physician at the University of California in San Francisco, where brain scans are performed using specialized equipment that is not available in Omaha. The tumor has not grown in over a year. She is hopeful that a new vaccine that is being developed at UCSF

Heather’s cancer has energized the whole family. “Heather and her parents have become wonderful role models,” says Popa. “Caring for Heather has been one of the most positive and touching experiences I’ve ever had.”

There is no simple or easy way to summarize brain tumors. Brain cancers make up just 1 to 2 percent of all cancers, but they are among the deadliest. They range from low-grade, less malignant tumors to high-grade and and aggressive tumors. There are about 22,000 new cases reported each year. They affect men and women equally. But in most cases, we don’t know the cause.

There’s been a marked increase in brain tumors over the last 50 years, especially among the elderly, but we don’t know why for sure, says Joan Keit, MD, a radiation oncologist with Alegent Health. We think much of this increase is due to better diagnosis as well as environmental factors, however, there is no clear evidence as to which environmental factors are the culprit.

Suspected are long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields from electric lines, petrochemicals, herbicides and pesticides, ionizing radiation, and nitrates associated with processed and cured meats.

A small percentage of tumors appear to be associated with a family history of brain tumors.

There are two primary types of brain tumors – those that begin in your brain (primary brain tumors), and those that begin in other parts of your body and travel to your brain (secondary or metastatic tumors). Secondary tumors are much more common than primary tumors. The most common cancers that spread to the brain include cancers of the breast, colon, kidney, lung and melanoma.

The signs and symptoms of a brain tumor vary greatly depending on the brain tumor’s size, location and rate of growth. Some telltale signs include intense headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and impairment of cognition.

Symptoms may also include a change in personality, hearing and vision loss, ringing in the ears and/or a loss of balance.

The positive side to brain tumors is the fact that treatment has improved significantly in the last 50 years. “We have gotten better at picking up tumors early, surgery is safer and there are new and better adjuvant therapies,” says Sylvanus Ayeni, MD, neurosurgeon at Creighton University Medical Center. Some of these advancements include better imaging tools to diagnose tumors; new neuro-navigation aids and brain mapping technology that have improved surgical precision; and more accurate, highdose radiation delivery systems.

“Infection and paralysis used to be very common years ago,” says Aveni, “but that’s not the case anymore. Now we even do awake surgery.” Awake surgery allows the physician to talk to the patient during surgery so that areas of the brain that affect motor skills and speech are not damaged.

Some of the more common types of brain tumors include meningiomas. These are generally slow-growing, benign tumors that don’t originate in the brain, but from one of the membranes that cover it. Once they are removed, the patient is usually cured.

Gliomas are primary malignant tumors that are very fast-growing.

Astrocytomas are the most common form of glioma. The sooner these tumors are discovered, the better the prognosis. Another common type among women is the pituitary adenoma tumor, such continued on next page

A neighbor recently shared that when she was 32, she had laparoscopic surgery on Friday and was back to work on Monday. She recently had another laparoscopic surgery at 55. She asked the doctor why it was taking so long to get well this time. The doctor looked at her and said, “How old are you now?” Here’s the catch — When you get ill or have surgery and you’re approaching or well into your 50s and beyond, it takes much longer to get well and heal. Doesn’t seem fair! You have much less time to work with at your age.

A way to get back to your lifestyle quickly is to stay in good shape. First, get approval from your doctor and if you can, walk every day. If you like the gym, ask the trainer what dumbbells or machines are for a person your age, and ask what aerobic exercise can be of benefit for you. It might be swimming, the treadmill, or spinning (riding a bike). Do as much as you can, as often as you can. The better shape you’re in, the more quickly you will heal.

If you get ill or have surgery, accept all the help you can get and request the services of a Home Health Care Nurse. If you get an infection after surgery and you don not have a nurse, it may take several days for you to see the doctor. By then, the infection could spread to other parts of the body, requiring long-term IV antibiotics, another hospital stay, even surgery! If needed, and Occupational Therapist can evaluate what safety equipment you many need in your home to keep you safe. And a physical therapist can teach you exercises, helping you get back to doing things you want to do.

Entertaining, light and easy Where did the time go? Here we are in the midst of the holiday season and looking to the New Year already! Don’t let 2010 come to a close without first inviting friends over to the house for some holiday cheer!

With all the overindulging this time of year, it’s best to keep your menu simple and light. I love crab and avocado together, and when the budget allows, you can purchase wonderful crabmeat from your favorite food store. However, when watching the budget, I found that using canned lump crabmeat and mixing it with imitation crab works beautifully. I came up with this crab and avocado wrap that has texture and color, and can be cut easily into two bits.

Another favorite of mine is roasted shrimp – the roasting brings out a wonderful flavor! But be careful not to overcook as they cook fast. The spicy cocktail sauce is a great complement. Add to this a raw veggie tray and hummus with pita chips and you’ll have a simple menu that’s sure to delight guests.

For the holidays, I always like a sparkling wine. It goes well with all the items, and the pop of the cork always puts a smile on your guests’ faces!

Crab and Avocado Wrap Servings: 8 4 1/4 ounces lump crabmeat, canned 8 ounces imitation crab 2 stalks celery, diced 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon horseradish 1 carrot, julienned 1/4 cucumber, julienned 1 large avocado 2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar 4 medium whole wheat tortillas Mix crab meat, celery, parsley, mayonnaise and horseradish together. Place layer of crab salad 1/4 up from the end of tortilla. Then place one roll of cucumber and carrot along the crab. Scoop avocado and place a layer of across the crab. Sprinkle with rice wine vinegar over the top. Roll tortilla tightly and wrap foil around it.

Refrigerate for 2 hours. Slice on the angle and serve.

Per Serving : 260 Calories; 17g Fat (57.6% calories from fat); 9g Protein; 19g Carbohydrate; 2g Dietary Fiber;24mg Cholesterol; 572mg Sodium.

Roasted Shrimp Servings: 6 2 pounds shrimp, large, 12 to 15 per pound 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon Judy’s house seasoning 1 medium lemon Judy’s house seasoning 1 part Sea Salt 1 part Black Pepper 1/ 4 part dried minced garlic 1/4 part red chili flakes Place seasonings in a coffee grinder and pulse to a medium course grind.

Cocktail Sauce 1 cup ketchup 3 tablespoons horseradish 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Mix together condiments and place in a dipping bowl.

Take shells off shrimp and de-vein, leaving tails on. Toss shrimp in seasoning and oil and roast in a 450° oven for 10 min. Squeeze lemon over shrimp. Serve with spicy cocktail sauce.
