T
here's no way another boater is going to pick up the wrong paddles after you do this treatment. When not in the water, these handsomely rustic works of art will look great displayed in your home.
MATERIALS • Canoe paddles • Sandpaper • Rags • Wood stain • Masking tape • Spray paint • Waterproof sealer

DIRECTIONS Use sandpaper to remove the paddle's varnish. Wipe down each paddle with a wet rag. The water will both remove any sawdust and help the wood absorb the stain. Stain with an old rag that you never want to see again and wait for the stain to completely dry. Have fun and be creative in your design choices. Tape off any areas that you do not want the paint to touch. Use plastic bags to mask off larger areas. Spray paint away! For the best results, cover the areas in multiple, light layers of paint. Be sure to let the paint dry completely before doing any additional taping. Peel off the tape to reveal your masterpiece! Apply waterproof clear coat.

t seems like the stereotypically idyllic life of a poet: a gravel path leading to a house in the woods, one that calls to mind Walden Pond and literary greats such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Poet Matt Mason and his wife, poet Sarah McKinstry-Brown, share that home with daughters Sophia Mason, 11, Lucia Mason, 7, and rescue dog Max. Their lives are as busy and hectic as those of any other working parents—even if they do revolve around words and the constant effort to construct them into something profound and beautiful.
“Being two poets seems like this really romantic existence,” explains McKinstry-Brown, “but it’s a lot of hard work and love, sweat, tears, and making time for the kids. Sometimes I wish people would have more of an understanding of how hard it is.” The couple’s professional achievements speak to exactly how hard, especially in terms of how hard each poet works. Mason, 46, is executive director of the Nebraska Writers Collective. He won a Pushcart Prize and served as a cultural envoy for the U.S. State Department to Botswana, Nepal, and Belarus. McKinstry-Brown, 38, leads literary workshops and garnered the Academy of American Poets Prize as well as a Blue Light Book Award for her full-length collection of poetry, Cradling Monsoons. Each has received Nebraska Books Awards, and they are influential members of Omaha’s flourishing poetry slam scene, a scene that Mason was instrumental in creating. The poets met in 2002, when McKinstryBrown appeared at a poetry slam in Omaha. “I announced on stage that it was my birthday, and Matt ordered me a piece of cheesecake,”

the mother of two remembers. “It was carrot cake,” Mason interjects. “No, it was cheesecake,” responds McKinstry-Brown. “Carrot cake,” insists Mason.
While poetry drew Mason and McKinstryBrown together, Sophia and Lucia, who both attend St. Philip Neri Catholic School, remain nonplussed about what their father and mother do for a living. When asked what they think about their parents’ jobs, they shrug their shoulders. “It’s funny,” remarks McKinstry-Brown. “It makes you realize how much your idea of normal is and how it’s shaped. Sophia’s asked a few times if everyone has a photograph on the back of a book. They’ve grown up going to a lot of readings. It’s their normal, and they’re very blasé about it.” Indeed, rather than talk about their parents, the sisters are focused on Max’s affectionate antics and the nextdoor neighbor’s puppy, which is staring plaintively into the living room window hoping to gain entry. “Don’t let the puppy in—we’ll never get rid of him!” exclaims McKinstry-Brown. The girls exchange mischievous glances as if trying to figure out how to get around this order without getting into trouble. Each girl has a personality that mirrors one parent. Sophia, who sports a pixie cut and wears a t-shirt and shorts, is serious and introspective like her father. A Minecraft enthusiast, she loves the different worlds she can build. “There are so many things in it,” Sophia explains. “You can build absolutely anything. You can build a castle. I’ve gone really far.”
Lucia, despite being laid low with a cough, is outgoing like her mother and sprawls comfortably across the floor in a white sparkly dress. She loves to cook and is competitive with her sister in developing recipes. “Sophia likes gross stuff,” she observes with an impish grin before rattling off some of the ingredients for one of her sandwiches. “It had bread, yogurt, and chocolate sauce,” she recounts. Even so, what Mason and McKinstry-Brown do for a living has influenced their daughters. At a young age, the sisters set up poetry slams, performing to audiences of stuffed animals seated around the living room couch. Sophia is interested in writing a children’s book with her mother titled Max at the Window, which would imagine the family pet’s fanciful daydreams while the the girls are at school. “I was thinking that for ‘about the author’ we should put something about Max and put glasses on him for his photo,” she suggests. While the girls may not always be aware of the challenges facing full-time poets, Mason is keenly so, indicating they’ve just returned from Disneyland. “It was our first real family vacation,” he says. “You look at how everyone lives very different lives from us, and there is a certain attraction to that.” “Like everyone else, it’s figuring out what’s sustainable,” McKinstry-Brown adds. “It’s more challenging because of the path we’ve chosen. The girls have given us so much of our art and how we see the world. They have given us so much insight. I’m really, really proud of us.”

MAMBA Named after a dangerous snake, passengers are flung over a 200-ft. hill at 75 mph in the park’s most iconic ride. Mamba delivers plenty of thrills and awards its passengers with the biggest bragging rights.

FURY OF THE NILE One of a handful of water rides at Worlds of Fun, Fury serves as the quickest cool-off. Few are safe from the waterfalls and splashes. But watch for long lines on a hot day.
PATRIOT It’s a good thing we’re the “home of the brave.” The Patriot is full of flips and inversions, but the inverted coaster keeps heads from flinging. The front row is the only way to go.

CYCLONE SAMS Cyclone Sams is the most exciting nonroller coaster ride at the park. Full of strobe lights and bright neon pictures of flying farmers and their cows, it’s an authentic tornado experience. Okay, maybe not…
STEELHAWK At 301 feet skyward, the newest ride offers the highest vantage point and a steady, scenic view of the park. This ride is smooth sailing…er, flying. Though not thrilling, the LED lights at night create a picturesque ride.
DETONATOR Constructed of two 200-ft. towers, this ride shoots upward at 45 mph with little warning. This ride earns the title of “Quickest Thrill” in the park. Be ready to leave your heart and stomach on the ground.
PROWLER This ride doesn’t have the same thrills as the Mamba, but riding it on a full stomach is ill-advised. It’s a good roller coaster for those who hate steep heights.

2 small parsnips, peeled 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 small sweet potato, peeled 1/2 tsp salt 1/8 tsp black pepper, optional
PREPARATION 1.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with foil. 2. Clean the vegetables, removing dirt and any wax coatings. Peel, or leave the outer peel on for extra nutrition. 3. Use a vegetable peeler to scrape thin strips from the parsnips. Put these in a bowl and toss with 1 Tbsp of oil. Spread out in a single layer on one of the prepared baking sheets. 4. Repeat with the sweet potato, spreading them on the second baking sheet. 5. Bake for 10 minutes, then rotate the baking sheets. Bake for another 5 minutes and remove from the oven if crisp and browned at the edges. If the crisps are not browned, bake for an additional 4 to 5 minutes, checking every minute, as the crisps brown very quickly. (Parsnips cook more quickly than sweet potatoes.) 6. Transfer the crisps to a large bowl and season with salt and black pepper. Serve immediately. Nutrition Facts: Calories: 65, Fat: 4g, Saturated Fat: 1g, Cholesterol: 0, Sodium: 162mg, Carbohydrates: 8g, Fiber: 2g, Protein: 1g Yield: 8 servings (1/4 cup, or about 10 crisps)

he Half Moon strengthens the abdomen, legs, ankles, and hips. It also improves balance and coordination, fights fatigue, and helps alleviate menstrual pains.

Position legs about 3 to 4 feet apart. Turn right foot out at 90 degrees. Align right heel with left heel. Place your left hand on your left hip, exhale, and bend the right knee. Engage the belly. Place right fingertips to the ground, about 1 foot in front of toes (or on a block) while firmly pressing into the right heel.

As you exhale, distribute all weight into right foot. Slowly straighten your right leg as you lift your left leg until it is close to parallel with the ground. Press through the left heel to keep the lifted leg strong and active. Keep a micro bend in the knee. Pull your left shoulder back to open through the chest.

to hidden passageways situated along the path that wends its way through the dank environs of the jungle. You know the ones, those doors whose cleverly crafted facades are designed to blend seamlessly into the craggy, vine-draped space. They have the power to send Barrett into a frenzy of unquenchable, just-gotta-know-what’sbehind-there curiosity. “Secret door!” he squeals with every new (and frequent) encounter with these camouflaged barriers. The magnificence of a planet’s flora and fauna is at his feet, but all Barrett seems to care about is imagining what double-super-secret wonders must lie just beyond those doors— those portals to the mysterious and the unknowable. The same rang true in both “The Spooky Place” (Barrett’s name for the moonlit swamps of the Kingdom of the Night exhibit) and the shark-infested waters of what he calls “The Fishy Place.”

Move Along NOTHING TO SEE HERE
he forbidden occupies a special place in the imaginations of young children, so it’s no surprise that a vital role in parenting (and grandparenting) resides in the task of setting clear boundaries—that process of delineating what is and isn’t allowed. That stove is hot. That knife is sharp. That street isn’t to be crossed.
But curiosity is the fuel that stokes childhood development, and the desire to explore and understand the unknown is at the very heart of learning. I was reminded of this fact on a recent outing to the zoo with my 4-year-old grandson, Barrett.
Like many frequent visitors, we have a specific circuit for navigating the sprawling zoo, one that invariably begins in the Lied Jungle. It’s a place of great adventure for Barrett, but perhaps not for the reason that one might expect. The attention span of a 4-year-old is about as fleeting as the fame of most reality TV “stars” (Snooki, anyone?), and the trickiest part of any zoo excursion is to get my grandson to focus on the featured attractions—the animals. Tapirs? Meh. Monkeys of every stripe? Ho hum. Exotic birds in a rainbow of colors? Save it for a box of Froot Loops. No, what really turns him on are those emergency exits, utility closets, and entrances
I’m glad that Barrett is curious. I’m happy that he has the ability to conjure visions of some alternate reality lurking just beyond his comprehension. Such inquisitiveness is a great asset and bodes well for a growing mind. And I also take comfort in knowing that the time will soon come when the zoo’s critters will take their rightful place as the center of his attention. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is on every list of the nation’s best zoos, and deservedly so. But I feel that the place is ready for a minor makeover, one where every door is…well, just a door. Remove those faux finishes. Paint them a boring green or black or beige. And please don’t stop there. Install one of those audio box thingies at every door to play a recorded message. “Move along,” the gentle voice should drone in a continuous loop. “Nothing to see here. Move along.” Grandpas everywhere will be grateful.
