Safe Summer Swimming KNOW HOW TO COMBAT COMMON PROBLEMS

ummer means swimming, and it takes a few precautions for parents to ensure the activity is safe and healthy, says pediatrician Melissa “Dr. Mel” St. Germain of Children’s Physicians at West Village Pointe. Otitis externa, known as “swimmer’s ear,” is one of the most common conditions associated with swimming. “Water that gets into your ear doesn’t dry out,” St. Germain explains. “It gets stuck behind wax or you get enough in there that it has a hard time getting out.” The condition is uncomfortable or even painful, and the moist environment encourages bacterial or fungal growth. “There are a couple of things you can do to prevent it, and one thing is making sure your ears get dry after swimming. Use a hair dryer on a lower setting, keeping it at least one foot from the head,” she said. Over- the-counter eardrops may be helpful, or a home solution of one part white vinegar to one part rubbing alcohol; simply place several drops into each ear and tilt out the liquid. “That dries out the ear, but also prevents bacteria and fungus from growing, because it has a little bit of an antiseptic property to it, too,” St. Germain says. Another condition is chlorine sensitivity, St. Germain says. “Chlorine is a chemical and it can be an irritant to some people,” she explains. Symptoms may include skin rashes and itchy, sensitive eyes,

but a true allergic response is uncommon. St. Germain advises that children who seem sensitive to chlorine rinse well after swimming and shower or bathe at home later, and use saline eye drops if needed. “Kids that have a true allergic response can pretreat with antihistamine,” she says. She also points out that sensitivity to chemically-treated water is better than the alternative: exposure to contaminated water. Small bodies of water on private property, public lakes that prohibit swimming, and any water that smells or looks bad are not good choices for swimming, she says. Public pools’ staff should monitor water quality throughout the day, and swimming lakes should also be regularly checked. “If you’re an otherwise healthy person who has a good immune system, your body is going to take care of those tiny amounts of bacteria that might get in,” St. Germain says. “You don’t want your two-year-old swallowing large amounts of water, and if you have a kid who is immune-suppressed, you might not want them splashing around in a lake full of bacteria. A bigger lake with a more diverse ecosystem is probably more self-regulating.” She also points out that small backyard pools with no filtering system can quickly become stagnant. “I always tell parents: ‘As soon as you’re done with that kiddie pool, drain it.’” And the most important way to keep swimming safe? “The recommendation from the Academy of Pediatrics is that all kids over the age of 4 have swimming lessons,” St. Germain says. omahamagazine.com

DIRECTIONS 1. Lightly mark the dowel rod 8 inches from the end on each side. This will give a guideline for centering the flag on the rod. 2. Cut out a 10x10” square of denim. I painted the stars by hand, but a star-shaped stencil or sponge may also be used if you seek a more refined look. 3. After the paint dries, align the left edge of the denim with the left-side mark on the rod and hot glue in place. 4. Cut the ribbons to varying lengths of about twice as long as you would like them to be. Fold ribbons around the wooden rod, and tie them in place until you reach the right-hand mark on the rod. Hot glue shorter pieces on the back side of the denim to complete the pattern. 5. Glue a ribbon across the top of the flag to conceal the knots and give the flag a finished look. bestofomaha.com

out it would be three boys we thought that was especially great since we already had a girl. We dreamed they would be the best of friends.” The preparations continued and next on their list were some pretty important items.

elli Rudman is no stranger to families with multiples. Her dad has a twin brother and she has a twin sister, so it is safe to say it’s a concept she is more than familiar with. But when she discovered she was pregnant with triplets, that familiarity was no match for the shock both Rudman and her husband, Nick, felt. “We were completely surprised, shocked, and overwhelmed initially. We were kind of scared out of our minds. It took a good four to five weeks for the news to set in. There were many nights of not sleeping and lots of worries about complications and possibly having to go on bed rest,” says Rudman. That shock soon turned into excitement, and as families do, the Rudmans started preparing. First on the list was sharing the news with their daughter, Millie. Now, Millie, being only 1 at the time may have hindered full comprehension of what was actually going on, but the excitement continued all the same. Particularly when Kelli and Nick found out all three triplets were boys, a set of identical and one fraternal. “We got excited thinking about how unique it would be,” Kellie explains. “When we found bestofomaha.com

Kelli works as an ENT physician for Boys Town and Nick is an attorney with Baird Holm. They were both fairly new to their jobs when they found out about the triplets. The family had just moved to Omaha from Milwaukee where Kelli completed her residency. Kelli is an Omaha native and was happy to move closer to family.

It was the best Christmas present ever.” The entire family has adjusted very well, even Millie, who loves helping her brothers when they lose their pacifiers. “It’s been really great. We have just accepted that for the first year we will have people around all the time to help. Since I am a twin, I am more excited for the triplets because you realize how close you are with your twin sibling. I am so excited for them to have that bond.”

Family would play an important role once the triplets made their arrival. That day came last December 1, five days earlier than the doctors had planned. Kelli was 35 weeks pregnant and had worked full time up until the last few weeks. The Rudmans welcomed Max Nicholas,

aundry seems to be the first reminder that, despite my best efforts, my kids are growing up. And also that their wardrobes are ridiculously larger than mine. When they were babies, we had tiny baby clothes plastic hangers, blue for Max and pink for Lucy. We watched our kids growing up, taught them to eat, to walk, and to talk. All of the sudden, out of nowhere, with absolutely no forewarning from any respectable friend with older kids, I hang up their clothes, and they slide right off the hanger. So, I spent months manipulating kid clothes to fit on baby hangers. Instead of carrying the hanging clothes by the actual hanger, I’d get them all hung up with the collar perfectly and barely balanced on the width of the hanger. I stacked them and folded the pile of hanging clothes in half and carried them in a pile to their rooms and carefully placed them in their closets. I figured I’d beaten the Clothes Hanger Man until I found myself lecturing the kids on keeping their closets clean, and why were their clothes on the floor of the closet? They were too young to understand my denial or the function of how clothes fit on a hanger, but big enough to require a new set of bigger hangers.

By that point, the kids have fairly small closets and ridiculously large wardrobes. My answer to this paradox, much to Joan Crawford’s dismay, was wire hangers. I found a mid-size clothes hanger. The wire hangers allow for more t-shirts to be hung in said small closet as opposed to the bulkier plastic hanger. Also, they’re less costly and that’s more money to support my coffee habit.

This whole clothes hanger issue has led to yet another wardrobe discovery: gender equity, or lack thereof. My kids are 12 years old now, and the same size. However, while Max’s shirts are doing just fine on the mid-size wire clothes hangers, Lucy’s are falling off. A junior girls shirt either reveals more shoulder with a wider neckline (think Flashdance) or may have a bit more of a V-cut. My point of denial has me using my hangers for Lucy’s clothes. I realize my kids are the size of adults now. I’m okay with moving them up to adult-size clothes hangers. I just question the gender equity of necklines a bit. Maybe I should just start folding their clothes instead.

our-year old Jesse Wilson is like most boys his age. He loves Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and McDonald’s French fries. But one thing sets him apart.

In his short life, he has undergone 20 surgeries to help correct the birth defect hypospadias. It means that his urethra is in the wrong spot. Normally, this type of defect is fixed through surgery, but Jesse’s case is rare. Jesse’s skin heals too quickly, subsequently undoing the work of each surgery. “If he didn’t heal in a way that he does, it would have been fixed a really long time ago,” says his mother, Jill Wilson. In the year Jesse was 2, he had surgery once a month. It’s hard to imagine. “He has been a champion. He bounces back so quickly and he handles it. He’ll just sit there and let the doctors do their thing,” Wilson says. They have strong support from family and friends. “My mom has never missed a surgery. She’s always there.” Wilson is thankful for the prayers from her mom’s friends on Jesse’s behalf. “I love hearing that and I appreciate every single one of them.” He was also born eight weeks early, so he spent some time in the neonatal intensive care unit at Methodist Women’s Hospital in Omaha. He has had two full reconstructive surgeries. Out of 20 surgeries, the majority of them were an attempt to correct his hypospadias, while others were for

different issues. “A lot of them were just attempts to keep his urethra open,” she says. “Luckily, the nurses and doctors at Children’s Hospital are phenomenal. Everybody has made him feel really comfortable.” They are continuing the search for a solution and are in Texas this month for a surgery with one of the nation’s pioneering pediatric urologists, Dr. Warren Snodgrass of the Forest Park Medical Center. Snodgrass is responsible for creating a new method for hypospadias repair that has become the most widely used operation for this condition. “The doctor said that he’s never had a child that has scarred the way that Jesse does, and so he’s hoping that when he does the surgery, he won’t. But there are no promises,” Wilson says. They will travel with his dad, James Wilson. Jocelyn, 20-months-old, will stay home with grandma. Jesse has a favorite stuffed giraffe he takes with him to the hospital each surgery. Gradually, his giraffe was joined by an army of bears that he earned one by one from the hospital after each surgery. “He has an extensive collection and those were always his favorite to cuddle with after he got out.” Meanwhile, Jesse, the continual fighter, is singing his way through the days. “He always sings. He loves ‘The Wheels on the Bus.’ Anything he hears, he repeats and he sings it,” Wilson says.

1 seedless watermelon, halved 1 pint fresh blueberries 1 pint fresh raspberries 1 quart fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

preparation 1. On a flat surface, with a sharp knife cut half the watermelon into large slices, about 1/2-inch thick. 2. With a metal star-shaped cookie cutter, cut star shapes out of the watermelon slices. 3. Cut remaining watermelon into 2-inch cubes. 4. In a large bowl, combine the watermelon cubes, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Toss gently. 5. Add the watermelon star slices and sprinkle with lemon juice.
