Rag Doll Pose
SANSKRIT NAME: UTTANASANA (OOH-TA-NAH-SAH-NAH)
W
ITH SPRING COMING on, I believe it’s not only fitting, but also
necessary to practice a pose that allows you to clear your head not only physically but also symbolically.
The “Rag Doll” variation of this forward bend/fold (Uttanasana) is one of my favorite variations, mostly because of the support that the bent elbows create for the head, and the comfort that the quadriceps create for your chest to rest. Plus—this pose doesn’t ask a lot of your hamstrings if they’re tight like mine. You can always bend your knees as much or as little as you’d like—being careful to not buckle the knees. For this variation, we will keep the knees gently bent.
This pose helps to relieve stress by calming the brain, decreasing anxiety, easing headaches, improving digestion; it can also be helpful with asthma, high blood pressure, infertility, and more. Symbolically, as you’re in the pose, imagine yourself letting go of any thoughts that no longer serve you.
1. Begin by deepening your
inhales and lengthening your exhales while pressing all four corners of both feet equally into the mat and place both hands on your hips in Mountain pose (Tadasana). 2. Begin to hinge into your forward fold by the hips— not by the waist. Keep the torso long as you fold forward into the pose. 3. When you arrive in the full position, bend your elbows and use each hand to hold onto opposite elbows. For the first few breaths, keep the knees gently bent, and let the chest rest on the tops of your
thighs as you allow the head to hang heavy and release. 4. If you’re feeling comfortable, sometimes it feels nice to gently nod your head “yes” and shake it “no” to let go of any tightness in the neck area. 5. Breathe deeply in the pose for up to one minute. Always feel free to exit the pose if it becomes challenging to breathe comfortably. 6. To exit the pose, first place your hands on your hips. On your next inhale, keep the spine long as you return back to Mountain pose.

Steady As She Grows T
HINGS I LOVE about March: Most of my
favorite people were born in March, our baby girl is due in March, and March is always affiliated with my favorite color—green!
DIRECTIONS 1. Place your letter on the sheet of
These moss letters are an easy way to add some green into your space without any watering or upkeep. Hang these over your kids' headboards, or even hang them on your front door. You can either apply the moss to wooden store-bought letters, or cut the letters out of cardboard yourself. I chose to do wooden letters because I liked the dimension given to the letter by its thickness. The great thing about cutting the letter out of cardboard is that you can create whatever style of letter you would like.

moss. With the scisors, cut out around the shape of the letter, being sure to leave enough room to wrap excess moss around the sides of the letter. Make cuts around any corners or edges of the letter to make folding easier (ex. A). Spray adhesive over the front and sides of the letter and press it onto the back of the sheet of moss. (Helpful hint: some sheets of moss are sold "peel and stick," so there is no need for adhesive.) Pull and wrap moss around letter, cutting slits accordingly to help fit the shape. Hold and press for a few seconds to make sure it adheres (ex. B and C). Cut small pieces of moss to press into any areas that the moss does not cover. These should blend right in (ex. D). Arrange any additional elements you would like to incorporate, and glue on accordingly.

Y
OU GOTTA JUST roll with the punches.”
These words from Joe Griffith of Elkhorn seem to echo a family motto of positivity. The father of four exudes happiness and an easygoing manner from the moment the door opens into a bright, airy home full of original artwork designed by his wife, Sara Griffith, often in the form of hand-painted monograms and signs around the house. Sara’s business is K. Palette, an homage to the original K. Pallet company owned by her father, Edd Kloucek. His K. Pallet made wooden pallets for refrigerators and other appliances. When Sara decided to go into a painting/decorating business, there was only one logical name.
“PEOPLE WILL DO WHAT THEY DO, BUT I’LL DO WHAT I FEEL IS RIGHT, WHICH IS TO HELP OTHERS.”
-Joe Griffith
She specializes in hand lettering, apparent from the art on the walls, the chalkboard in the dining room with the family calendar, and the chalkboard in the kitchen with the family meal plan. The meal plan is erased often in exchange for hand-lettered quotes or hand-drawn artwork. Birthday parties, block parties, New Year’s Eve parties…they all happen at the Griffiths, and all offer a chance for Sara to create.
When Sara or Joe aren’t working, they can often be found helping others. Joe, director of operations at Sam & Louie’s, was the PTO president for Westridge Elementary for the past three years, and, at the urging of principal Troy Sidders, will be the PTO president again next year. “People will do what they do, but I’ll do what I feel is right, which is to help others,” Joe says. “I travel a lot, I work a lot, but we make time to go to church, to see the kids in school functions. When you make a choice to have kids and be part of a community, that’s the responsibility you have.” »

« The Griffith’s kids—Lucy, 10, Charlie, 7, Max, 6, and Ben, 1—understand this idea. The older three all want to be parents to baby Ben, carrying him around the house and handing him juice. At night, they like to put him to bed. “I always read him a story and sing him a song,” Lucy says. Lucy’s love of mothering is also apparent in the doll that she carries throughout the house, carefully rocking it as she sits down at the kitchen table.
Helping with the youngest is an experience the parents hope will be positive for all the kids. They encourage positivity, and reward it with a system of mason jars the kids can fill with colored pom-poms Sara bought from a craft store.
Whenever the kids do something positive, like cleaning up without being told, or doing something nice for someone else, they get to put a pom in the jar. When everyone fills their jars, the family does something fun, such as going bowling.
10
The activity is even extended to one-year-old Ben, who only speaks a handful of words, but they include “please” and “thank you.”
Charlie is the organizer and goal setter. He started The Chuck Stop lemonade stand last summer, and earned nearly $800—enough money to buy a scooter and an Xbox 360, both of which he likes to play with. He also likes keeping things tidy. “There was one Saturday morning that we woke up to the vacuum running,” Joe said. “I came out to the living room, and Charlie had everything picked up. I said, ‘What are you doing man?’ He said, ‘I thought I would get the cleaning done now so we could just play or something today.’ This was at 7 a.m.”
Max is shy. In fact, he barely comes out of his room to say hello, then retreats back to his safe space. Even though Max would prefer to be alone now, he still likes to help with his little brother.
This attitude of doing unto others especially pleases Joe. HerFamily

“I believe in leading by example. I’m trying to live a good life and teach these kids that’s what you do.”
That includes helping other family members. A couple of years ago, Joe’s parents moved four blocks away from him, and that means the family is around to help with the house and the lawn.
“For me it was about being able to help when I can, but it was more about being able to have my kids around them,” Joe said. “They aren’t going to be around forever.” It’s a lesson they know well. Sara’s parents have both passed away, and they live in the home where Sara has lived since she was a high school freshman. “That’s why I was excited to start a family,” Sara says. “I wanted to create that parent-child bond again. It’s good to be with the kids.”

Onion Rings INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •
1 lb. sweet onions 3/4 Cup all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 3 egg whites 1/4 Cup cornmeal 3/4 Cup dry panko bread crumbs 1/4 tsp salt 2 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp paprika 1/8 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, optional
PREPARATION
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Place a wire rack on top of a baking sheet.
2. Cut off ends of each onion and peel.
Slice onions into 1/2-inch-thick slices and separate into rings. Place rings in bowl and cover with ice water. Soak for 30 minutes. Drain. 3. In a large plastic bag, combine flour and baking powder. Add onion rings to bag and shake to coat with flour mixture. Remove from bag, shaking off the excess. Set aside. 4. In a shallow bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. In another shallow bowl, combine cornmeal, panko bread crumbs, salt, thyme, paprika, black pepper, and cayenne. Working with one ring at a time, dip the onion rings in the egg whites. Then dip in the bread crumb mixture to coat evenly, shaking off the excess. Arrange coated onion rings in a single layer on a rack with a baking sheet. 5. Generously coat onion rings with canola or olive oil cooking spray. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, turning halfway through cooking, or until golden and crisp. Serve immediately.

Blue Paper (AND THE PALMER METHOD)
W
HEN EXACTLY DID report cards
go digital?
I was reviewing my grandson Easton’s kindergarten report card the other day (very proudly, as is the case for every grandparent, I’m sure) and my first reaction was the unmistakeable sense that I was reading some complicated business report, a tome that would be more at home in a boardroom than in a classroom.
David Williams
I couldn’t help but notice that the thing was a full three and a half pages long, a far cry from the postcard-sized piece of trifold paper filled out in black ink by nuns—also in black—that I once toted home in a backpack when Tommy James and the Shondells had a No. 1 hit with (My Baby Does the) “Hanky Panky.” Memory check. No, that is wrong. Guilty of rewriting history here. Never trust a writer. Kids didn’t carry backpacks in that turbulent decade of Woodstock and Viet Nam. Those came only later. Well, except for Larry Daniels. He carried a backpack. And his father had a firstrate collection of “exotic” books on the peoples of the African continent that ranked right up there with your dad’s hidden stash of Playboy magazines when it came to gratuitous nudity.

Yay! I just stumbled onto an idea for a future column! No, not that one. Get your mind out of the gutter. Maybe I’ll someday explore on this page how we became a civilization where every schoolchild has to be encumbered with a backpack of the same lumbar-crushing weight as those schlepped by our soldiers as they trudge through international intrigues in far-off lands. Now where was I?
Oh, yes, report cards. Stark. White. Report cards. It’s just that it all seemed somehow…well, cold to see a progress report on a living, breathing human being—my grandson, no less—laid out like a utility bill or a bank statement. This is not a complaint, mind you. Easton’s report card was so much deeper and broader

It was loaded with ernest, thoughtful comments from the teacher and was rich in what business people would call “actionable information.” It was miles beyond the spare report card assessments of my youth, the ones that were beautifully written in the Palmer Method (Yet another column idea! I’m on a roll here!) on that tiny blue—always blue—slip of paper.
