from the president

Dear Friends of Omaha Performing Arts,

Welcome to HADESTOWN, where a song truly can change your fate!

There are times we present a show on our Broadway season that deeply resonates with our audience, and we vow to present it again if possible. HADESTOWN is one of those shows.

When the 8-time Tony Award® winner made its Nebraska premiere at the Orpheum three years ago, the positive feedback and requests for a return were immediate. It’s easy to understand why. The intertwining Greek myths of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and King Hades and Persephone are powerful and transformative.

HADESTOWN captivates us with the story, the music, and the deeply moving human drama – along with the unexpected ending. It demonstrates the wonder of live performance that we all celebrate.

Speaking of the magic of theater, earlier this week we announced our 2025/2026 Broadway Season that kicks off in September. It is “so good, so good, so good!” With seven shows in the package and three popular returns as add-ons, it is our biggest season yet! Check out the center spread of this program to see the hit productions we are bringing to Omaha. And if you’re not already a subscriber –please join us and guarantee your seats!

As the cast sings in the HADESTOWN finale – “We raise our cups” to each of you – we’re glad you’re here. Please enjoy the show!

Did you know: Singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, who wrote the music, lyrics, and book for HADESTOWN, came up with the idea out of the blue while driving in her car. The melody of what would become the song “Wait for Me” came to her, and she connected the lyrics to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. While the lyrics ended up changing over the 12+ year development process of the show, the song stayed and became one of the most popular in the show.

WHO’S WHO IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY

A guide to the characters that inspired Hadestown.

ORPHEUS —Son of the muse of epic poetry, engaged to marry Eurydice. With his golden voice and lyre, Orpheus charmed all living things, even rocks and stones.

EURYDICE —A dryad, or tree nymph, engaged to marry Orpheus. On the day of their wedding, she was bitten by a poisonous snake, died, and descended to the Underworld.

HADES —God of the dead, ruler of the Underworld, sometimes called “the Wealthy One.” He fell in love with, abducted, and married Persephone. Her mother, goddess of the harvest, refused to bless the earth while Persephone was below.

PERSEPHONE —Goddess of the seasons, flowers, fruit, and grain. By arrangement, she spent half the year with Hades in the Underworld, causing fall and winter above. The other half she returned to her mother, bringing spring and summer with her.

HERMES —Fleet-footed guide, messenger of the gods, and conductor of souls to the Underworld. In some tellings, it was Hermes who taught Orpheus to play the lyre.

FATES —Three goddesses who together determined the destinies of mortals, measuring their lifespans and apportioning their suffering.

CHORUS —In ancient Greek theater, the Chorus sang, spoke, and danced in unison. Often representing the voice of the citizens, the Chorus commented on the actions of characters and served as an emotional conduit for the audience.
