he Nebraska State Law requires school physical exams before entering kindergarten and seventh grade. These exams must be conducted no more than six months before school starts in the fall, which means parents can beat the rush by setting up school physical appointments in the spring for the following school year.

A good way to remember your child’s checkup is to schedule this around your child’s birthday. These checkups are a great time to talk with your pediatrician about any questions or concerns regarding your child’s health, development or growth.

“We cannot hope to provide excellence in women’s health care without safety as our priority,” said Sue Korth, COO, Methodist Women’s Hospital.

A

ccording to HospitalSafety.com, an estimated 98,000 hospital deaths occur annually as the result of medical errors.

These errors carry with them approximately $37.6 billion in additional charges, including $17 billion associated with prevented errors.

That’s why Methodist Women’s Hospital took on the challenge to ensure its new women’s hospital offers the highest levels of patient safety.

“Safety has been our priority from the very beginning of this project,” said Sue Korth, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Methodist Women’s Hospital. “We cannot hope to provide excellence in women’s health care without safety as our priority.”

Methodist Women’s Hospital’s focus on patient health and safety led to the requirement that every nurse on staff be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). ACLS-certified nurses are specially trained to provide the clinical interventions necessary for urgent treatment of cardiac arrest and other medical emergencies. In addition, every nurse who works in a mother/baby, highrisk obstetrics or labor/deliver unit will be certified in ACLS for the emergency treatment of pregnant or newly-delivered women (known as ACLS-OB).

“Safety is the reason we are requiring our staff to have advanced training and certifications. Safety is the reason for the state-of-the-art equipment and specialized care. And, safety is the reason for in-depth information technology and access security features,” Korth said.

All Methodist Physicians Clinic Women’s Center physicians who will deliver babies at Methodist Women’s Hospital, along with all labor and delivery and OB nurses, will be certified in Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM). EFM is a technology commonly used in the obstetrics setting to assess the baby’s well-being during labor.

• Bar Coding for Medications. Bar coding insures the “five rights” are met in the administration of medications: right patient, right route, right dose, right time and right drug.

• Safe Place. An infant security system with matching electronic badges for moms and newborns is currently in use at Methodist Hospital, 8303 Dodge Street. Safe Place protects babies from being taken out of a locked area.

• Watch Child. Used prior to and during delivery, this technology reports electronic fetal monitoring heart rate information to central monitoring units.

This allows specially trained nurses to monitor a baby’s heart rate regardless of their location within the hospital.

• Adult Telemetry. Methodist Women’s Hospital patients in need of cardiac monitoring will be hooked up to this

special monitoring system. Patients’ heart rate information will be monitored 24/7 by specially trained telemetry technicians who will evaluate and observe the heart rate information and notify floor nurses should they observe irregular heartbeat information. Emergency department patients will be monitored by emergency department staff.

“We have incorporated many safety features for incidents we hope never occur,” Korth said. “Rooms have been designed to accommodate the members of any code team, along with in-room buttons that will call and hold an elevator in the event a patient would need to be transferred quickly.”

traced back archeologically at least 4,000 years. The spreading of acupuncture and TCM to other regions dates back centuries: first to Korea and Japan and then to other Asian countries. The relatively brief history of acupuncture in the United States can be traced back about 200 years, when Dr. Franklin Bache published a report in the North American Medical and Surgical Journal on his use of acupuncture to treat lower back pain. During the long history of recorded practice, acupuncture has been applied to many disorders.

Today, acupuncture is thought to decrease pain by increasing the release of chemicals that block pain called endorphins, a morphinelike chemical produced in our own bodies during times of pain or stress. Many acu-points are located in close proximity to the nerves. When stimulated, these nerves cause a dull ache or feeling of fullness in the muscle. The stimulated muscle sends a message to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), causing the release of endorphins. Endorphins, along with other neurotransmitters, a chemical in the body that modifies nerve impulses, block the message of pain from being delivered to the brain. This in a sense will turn off the sensation of pain.

Acupuncture is most effective at treating chronic pain such as headaches, menstrual cramps, and low back, neck, or muscle pain.

It can also be used to treat arthritis, facial pain, pain from shingles, and spastic colon and colitis conditions. Acupuncture has also been successful in treating obesity and addictions such as nicotine or drugs.

Acupuncture can improve the functioning of the immune system, the body’s defense system against diseases. It is a safe and effective way to treat chronic pain and discomfort.

Having Fun Playing and Learing

hildren learn by playing. Through play, they acquire new knowledge by examining and exploring their environment.

Play promotes young children’s thinking, language and mathematics ability, problemsolving skills, memory, and attention. To foster certain skills, parents can gently guide their child to engage in different activities.

Below is a description of fun activities that you and your children can do that research has shown benefits boys and girls.

Outdoor play When temperatures are moderate, go outdoors and let the children run around.

Physical exercise promotes healthy weight, elevated mood, and problem solving.

While outdoors, children have to create and negotiate their own rules and plans, substitute objects for other things, use role play, and use their language and imaginations to cooperate with each other. Because there are few rules while playing outside, it is easy for children to be inventive. Outdoor games also foster visual-spatial skills which have been shown to be important for mathematics.

Take your children on walks with you. If they are old enough, they can accompany you by bike or tricycle. The gross motor exercise will help them develop muscles, and will provide them with a sense of confidence. It is also an excellent time to spend quality time with your child. While you are walking, point out interesting things in nature. Parents may want to let the child direct that conversation. For example, have your child be “the guide or scientist.” She or he can find objects or point to things along the way and discuss them with you. Giving children the lead increases their self-esteem.

You will probably notice different play behaviors between boys and girls. Boys tend to play in larger groups with different age groups and in a more competitive way.

Girls tend to play in smaller, same-age groups in a more cooperative manner. Let them initiate the games. Unscripted play promotes creativity.

Indoor Play When temperatures are dangerously high or low, play with your child indoors. Young children will love crawling inside empty boxes or making music with pots and pans.

pretend play. The Children’s Museum offers a variety of games for all ages. Children have opportunities to play at their own pace in an environment that is free from failure. They can create their own stories, share them with peers, and learn through guided play.

Both boys and girls play with toys such as blocks, medical kits, bowling sets, and play dough. But in general boys more often play with vehicles, toy animals, sports equipment, computers, and “spatialtemporal” toys (e.g., shape-sorting toys, magnets, and outer-space toys), whereas girls are more likely to play with shopping carts, princesses, castles, dolls, and stuffed animals. It is important that children have access to all types of toys, because certain toys foster skills that others do not. For example, one of my studies found that creativity and complexity of play were higher when children played with feminine toys. Children were able to sustain more numerous play sequences with feminine toys than with other types of toys. That is, boys and girls who played with a toy kitchen set, food, and dolls had higher play sequences than those playing with other toys. In a subsequent study, we found that for boys, the highest play complexity for boys was achieved with Legos, a bulldozer, an airplane, a medical kit, a pirate ship, and play dough. The highest play complexity for girls was elicited by play with a Dora castle, a shopping cart, a tool chest, a bowling set, and block letters. Creative children tend to play with all types of toys and be more flexible about the gender-appropriateness of toys. Creativity is also associated with spending more time playing with others and with playing outdoors.

Child’s play may be serious business, with important consequences for children’s learning and socialization, but for very young children, it seems to work best when it is not scripted or organized by adults. My research also suggests that adults should provide open-ended opportunities and a comfort zone for children to play with toys and engage in activities that cut across gender stereotypes. At the same time, it is important to note that not all toys are educational, and not all interactions between parents and children necessarily aim to produce productive members of society. Sometimes they are just fun.

By: Rizwa The wind was howling like a pack of wolves, sending snow flurries all around. The car drove carefully on the windy road. It was -10* F outside and grampa Jim didn’t want car to skid on the slippery ice. Inside the car Grampa Jim turned up the heat. In the back seat three kids: Payton, Jordan, and Pat sat. Payton was examining her wrench. She wanted to go home and build her tree house. Jordan was listening to music while their little sister Pat was fast asleep. The snow covered car pulled up in front of a barely visible hotel. “We’re going to have to spend the night here; the weather is too harsh, said Grampa Jim.” Inside the hotel Payton and her siblings fiddled around with their tool while their grampa was waiting on line to check in to the hotel. A man dressed in brown overalls came up to them. He asked Payton “Can I please use that tool?”

“No!! of course not!” Payton shouted back.

Grampa came up and told the man to leave. The man in overalls walked away looking gloomily. Unexpectedly the lights and the heater went off. An intercom yelled, “Please stay calm and may everyone gather in the front lobby.” The lobby was getting colder and colder. It was starting to feel like walk-in-refrigerator in the lobby. Grampa Jim, Payton, Jordan, and Pat watched as the man in overalls was hurriedly going from person to person asking for tools. Payton figured out that the

man in overalls was a janitor. Finally, Payton gave him the tool.

After a few minutes, the heating and the lights went back on.

Next morning, grampa and kids left the hotel. When they arrived their home, first thing Payton noticed was a beautiful tree house on their tree. Under the tree house was a man in brown overalls holding their tool. Afterall, it looked like that the kids learned a lesson about giving.

Banish Bullying From Schools how to respond appropriately to bullies, can make them less of a target.

Bullies often learn their aggressive behaviors at home. That’s why it’s important for adults to be aware of their actions and model behaviors that demonstrate caring and compassion.

Bullies thrive in environments where there is little supervision and where aggressive behaviors are tolerated. Whether in school or at home, bullying behaviors can be significantly diminished when supervision is provided and appropriate boundaries are enforced.

Bullying victims often don’t seek help.

Therefore, it’s important to recognize the signs that suggest a child may be getting bullied. Signs to watch for include: • Appearing distressed, depressed or tearful • Being afraid or reluctant to go to school • Staying close to adults (school staff ) rather than peers • Coming home with unexplained bruises or scratches • Having torn clothes or damaged books • Having difficulty sleeping • Needing extra money for no apparent reason

Younger children need to be monitored and supervised when using technology, and adults need to talk to older kids about online etiquette and set specific guidelines for Internet and cell phone use. All kids need to be encouraged not to forward cyberbullying messages, and victims need to be encouraged to print out offending messages and bring them to the attention of a parent or trusted adult.

An Important Missing Link

Part 3 - The Ultimate Father

T

he Bible has much to say on the subject of fathers and fatherhood. And despite the passage of time since this book was written, the advice it offers, when understood and applied properly, is still practical and practicable. In fact, the Creator of the universe describes Himself as a father. He is also defined as love: “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16, English Standard Version).

But what is love? Another scripture provides a practical definition: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends” (1 Corinthians 12:4-8, ESV).

This describes action, not merely feeling. A father who employs these attributes cannot help but connect in a profound way with his children and propel them on their way to being responsible community citizens.

Unfortunately, many fathers are not sufficiently immersed in their children’s lives to employ these attributes, and as a result, both fathers and children miss out. There can be a variety of reasons for this distance. Some men are a product of parents who believed children were the sole responsibility of mothers. Others are simply too concerned with their own needs and wants to remember that others also need attention. However, those men who realize they are responsible for their children, and who invest the time it takes to connect with them, find their lives are greatly enriched by the experience.

Loving involvement requires more than words. A father must be plugged in to the daily operation of his family so he can clearly see his children’s needs. It is increasingly evident that fathers can’t sit on the sidelines and let mothers parent alone.

Are fathers necessary? Based on the statistics, the right type of father is in high demand. In fact, loving, engaged and committed fathers are perhaps more important than ever before.

Five Ways to Be a Great Dad Today • Look at your children and call out their best. Be your kid’s biggest fan. Your children are waiting for you to call out their best. They are waiting for you to give them praise and affirmation. Call out what they did right in their choices and actions. Call out what you like best about them. Call out the fact that you love them deeply.

• Love your children by touching them gently and speaking to them softly. There is nothing so powerful as a father’s touch. A soft and gentle touch - a hug, a kiss on the head - can make a child feel safe and secure.

Listening will only take a few minutes, but the impact will last a lifetime.

• Leave a legacy by giving your children a memory. Make a plan to do something simple but something that your children can always remember. Read the same story each night for a month, play a certain game each week, fix the same dinner or breakfast every Saturday.

• Laugh with your children. Allow your children to find the joy in life that comes with innocence. Then laugh with your children in these moments and find the deepest joy that is known in the heart of a parent.

If you take the time to love, laugh, look, listen, and leave a legacy, you will connect with your kids and be the dad they need and want you to be.

Many children have what is called an acute inflammatory arthritis following a viral or bacterial infection. This arthritis is often quite severe for a brief period but usually disappears within a few weeks or months.

It took a couple of months to find the right medication, but once we found what worked, it worked wonders. My mom remembers hearing me delight in the fact that I could once again walk and it is something we would never again take for granted.

As I have grown, I have had several relapses and remissions. Luckily they are temporary and I have learned to adapt. I enjoy music and dance, swimming, playing with friends; and I truly appreciate when I can be independent.

A week later, the wrist on my dominant hand became so swollen that I couldn’t hold my own fork. Everyday tasks suddenly became distressful. As my mom tried to dress me, I would scream because it hurt to lift my arms. My mom wondered what could be wrong with her sweet little daughter.

I am an advocate for myself and for other children living with JRA. I enjoy spending time at Camp Spirit - a camp for arthritic children. I understand that arthritis can affect any age, and how it effects individuals differ greatly by person.

After two months of multiple blood tests, x-rays and doctors, we were referred to specialists at Children’s who diagnosed me with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis ( JRA). “Isn’t that a disease of the elderly?”, you ask. Unfortunately the answer is “No.” According to statistics, Arthritis affects approximately one child in every 1,000 in a given year. Fortunately, most of these cases

I am now 9 years old and I have irreversible bone erosion in my left wrist. This past year I was able to be the juvenile arthritis honorary chair of the Arthritis walk. Even though I have JRA, it doesn’t mean I can’t be normal. I tell my friends that kids have JRA too and we can still have a happy life.

Bicycle Safety • Do not push your child to ride a two-wheeled bike until he or she is ready. Consider the child’s coordination and desire to learn to ride. Stick with coaster (foot) brakes until your child is older and more experienced.

• Buy a bike that is the right size, not one your child has to “grow into.” Oversized bikes are especially dangerous.

• Children need to wear a helmet on every bike ride, no matter how short. Accidents happen in driveways, on sidewalks and on bike paths, not just on streets.

Children learn best by observing you. When you ride your bike, wear your helmet.

• When purchasing a helmet, look for a label or sticker that says the helmet meets the CPSC safety standard.

• A helmet protects your child from serious injury, and should always be worn. And remember, wearing a helmet at all times helps children develop the helmet habit.

• A helmet should be worn so that it is level on the head, not tipped forward or backward. The strap should be securely fastened, and should not move in any direction.

Skateboard and Scooter Safety • Children should never ride skateboards or scooters in or near traffic.

• All skateboarders and scooter-riders should always wear a helmet and other protective gear - even when if they are not attempting tricks.

• Communities should continue to develop skateboard parks, which are more likely to be monitored for safety than ramps and jumps constructed by children at home.

Lawn Mower Safety • Use a mower with a control that stops the mower from moving forward if the handle is let go.

• Children younger than 16 years should not use ride-on mowers.

Children younger than 12 years should not use walk-behind mowers.

• Wear sturdy shoes (not sandals or sneakers) while mowing.

• Prevent injuries from flying objects, such as stones or toys, by picking up objects from the lawn before mowing begins. When using a mower, wear hearing and eye protection.

• Do not pull the mower backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary, and carefully look for children behind you when you mow in reverse.

• Always turn off the mower and wait for the blades to stop completely before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the discharge chute, or crossing gravel paths, roads or other areas.

• Do not allow children to ride as passengers on ride-on mowers.
