pring is in the air, and I like it!

Even though our winter was barely noticeable, I’m coming alive with ev-

erything else that is blooming. Once we get to April, the winter “stir-crazy” has set in, and being curled up on the couch is no longer appealing. The best thing to do during this time is get outdoors and back into an active lifestyle; and I can’t wait!

April is National Autism Awareness Month

A

utism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that impairs thinking, feeling, and social functioning. Most often this disorder becomes apparent by the age of three and lasts throughout a child’s life. Autism studies have shown males are four times more likely than females to develop Autism, and the amount of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder has significantly risen over the last several years.

Signs of Autism Signs of Autism can vary in subtleties, but parents are usually the first to begin noticing changes in their child’s social and communication behaviors. Some of the signs a parent may notice include: • Impaired social interaction. A child may have problems engaging in play, avoid eye contact, and lack warm expressions, such as smiling.

• Indifferent to others. A child may fail to seek expression to a parent’s comfort or anger.

• Delayed language development. A child may have the inability to hold small conversations or understand social engagement.

• Difficulty with non-verbal communication. A child may not understand facial expressions or hand gestures.

• Repetitive movements. A child may rock, spin, or become intensely preoccupied with toys or objects.

Seeking Help Early detection and intervention of Autism is important to ensure a child receives the proper care needed. Boys Town Pediatrics encourages parents to schedule an office visit with their pediatrician if they are concerned about their child’s developmental progress, or if their child is showing signs of Autism.

During the office visit, a pediatrician will review the child’s medical history and perform a developmental exam. The pediatrician will specifically look for several language milestones that include: • Babbling by 12 months of age • Gesturing by 12 months of age • Saying single words by 16 months of age • Saying two-word phrases by 24 months of age If additional testing is needed, a pediatrician may refer to a developmental behavioral physician, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of development disorders.

My Child has Autism Although there is no cure for Autism, there are treatments and educational approaches that can reduce some of the challenges a child and parent may face. Because Autism varies on levels of severity, treatment is individualized to fit each child’s specific needs and to highlight a SPECTRUM child’s abilities.

Children and Fall-Related Injuries Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after.

W

hile this nursery rhyme has been around for centuries, no one

recognized until recently how many children are injured in falling accidents. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, accidental falls are the leading cause of nonfatal childhood injuries. More than 2.3 million children, age 14 and under, were treated in hospital emergency rooms for fall injuries in 2006. Nebraska’s Health and Human Services System (HHSS) said in a 2004 report that falls are the leading cause of hospitalization for children under 15.

Infants are at a greater risk from falls that are associated with furniture, stairs, and baby walkers. Children ages 1 to 4 suffer from fall-related injuries that tend to occur in the home and at playgrounds. Children ages 5 to 9 are most injured from playground equipment when falling from one level to another. Children ages 10 to 14 are typically at school or at home when a fall injury occurs. They experience a majority of fall injuries from sports-related activities and playground equipment. Overall, the most common place of occurrence for a fall-related injury is in the home.

To prevent fall-related injuries, follow these tips:

Falls from Furniture • Don’t leave babies alone on beds, changing tables, sofas, or other high places.

• Always strap children into highchairs and strollers Falls from Heights • Don’t let children play alone on fire escapes, high porches, or balconies.

Slips and Falls from Floor Surfaces • Secure area rugs—especially on wood, ceramic tile, or linoleum floors—with a piece of foam carpet backing, double-sided tape, or a rubber pad, available at many carpet and department stores.

• Be sure children are dressed in clothing that fits. Loose shoes that don’t fit

Falls on the Stairs • Keep stairs clear. Kids spend as much time running up and down stairs as they do going in and out the back door. As it is, stairs figure in a large percentage of home falls. Combine a child’s boundless, yet reckless, energy with a staircase full of junk, and you could end up taking an emergency trip to the hospital.

• Use safety gates if there are infants and toddlers in your home.

At the top of the stairs, attach the gate to a wall. Avoid accordion gates with large openings—a child’s neck can get trapped.

Window Falls • Keep your windows closed and locked when children are around. When opening windows for ventilation, open windows that a child cannot reach.

• Set and enforce rules about keeping children’s play away from windows or patio doors. Falling through the glass can be fatal or cause serious injury.

• Keep furniture—or anything children can climb—away from windows.

• Never depend on an insect screen to keep your child from falling out of the window. Screens are intended to keep insects out, not children in.

• Unguarded windows opened only five inches pose a danger to children under 10. In some cities, landlords are required by law to place window guards in apartments where children live; such guards prevent windows from being opened wide enough for a child to crawl through. Be sure to check with your local fire department and building code official to make sure guards or security bars comply with all applicable requirements.

In the Bathroom • Always use a rubber mat or slip-resistant stickers in the tub.

• Never leave a child unattended in the tub. Should they slip and fall, they may be unable to cry for help.

Falls on the Home Playground • The playground at your home may be dangerous. Don’t let young children play on playgrounds with asphalt surfaces.

Grass and dirt also cause injuries in falls. Playgrounds with rubber, wood, mulch, or sand surfaces are best.

Healthy Snacks: Apple Ladybugs

L

The Importance of Training

ne of the most important concepts in youth sports today is

the importance of training versus practicing. Playing and attending practices is part of the equation to success. “Talking about abuse can be very difficult. No one wants to acknowledge that it happens, but we have to be aware, and we have to help educate families if we want to make a difference,” says Dr. Haney.

Look for Warning Signs to Prevent Child Abuse

C

hildren’s Hospital & Medical Center and Project Harmony join with families and communities across the country in marking April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

While there appears to be an overall decline in abuse nationwide, there has been an increase in abusive head trauma, formerly known as Shaken Baby Syndrome.

“Locally, we have seen a slight decrease in non-accidental trauma. However, we find it disturbing to see that the most severe injuries, abusive head trauma, have risen from previous years,” says Suzanne Haney, MD, medical director of the Children’s Advocacy Team and Project Harmony in Omaha.

In 2011, 30 children were admitted to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center for treatment of injuries related to non-accidental trauma or abuse. The number was just slightly higher in 2010 with 32 children requiring hospitalization. Three children over the course of these two years did not survive their injuries. All three suffered abusive head trauma.

“This is a leading cause of death in instances of abuse,” says Dr. Haney.

Many more children suffer physical and emotional injuries that do not require hospital care. Project Harmony helps approximately 2,200 children and teenagers each year as they deal with the aftermath of physical or sexual abuse, or neglect.

A non-profit organization based in Omaha, Project Harmony is focused on tending to a child’s

After all, raising a child is a challenging job. But, she points out, it is not normal to step over the line.

“Parents and caregivers should not be afraid to ask for help from other family members or friends. Additionally, support your loved ones and check on them, especially if they’ve been stressed or overwhelmed. These social connections can help prevent what could be a catastrophic moment for everyone involved,” she SPECTRUM says.

In all of the busyness that is our lives, during days that sometimes seem like they will never end, things begin to slip away. And you barely notice it until it’s too late.

And then, when you do realize it, sometimes you cry.

Unless someone reminds you, you forget that you are in a season of your life—a very, very important season where you have the privilege of being the parent of young children. And although the days can be long, difficult, and challenging, the time is so very, very short.

n article in The Huffington Post generated all kinds of response recently—mostly an “Amen” from young mothers. It was re-posted by many on Facebook with another slew of young mothers who were happy that someone had finally been honest about how hard it is to be the parent of young children, and how every day is not a party.

The author was tired of hearing, “Enjoy this time with your kids while they are young. It goes by so fast.” She couldn’t understand why older moms and grandmothers felt such a compulsion to remind her to seize each day with her kids. She said reminding her only made her feel judged and guilty because some days were just…hard.

The article made me so sad. Truly. I simply sat there staring at the screen, desperately wanting to reach through cyberspace and hug this weary young woman. I wanted to tell her that it really would be okay. That one day, far sooner than she wants or expects, her babies will no longer throw fits in the grocery store, have meltdowns during church, or poop all over her clean floor. One day, far sooner than she wants or expects, she and her husband will yet again be able to have a date without having to worry about a babysitter. One day, far sooner than she wants or expects, there will no longer be sticky fingers on her sofa, a washing machine filled with the evidence of two children sick at 3am, and no more frantic calls to the doctor when the fever spikes at 102 degrees.

I’m getting ready to put my oldest “baby” into high school. I tear up even as I type that because I only have four short years left with this amazing kid. And believe me, it feels like I brought him home from the hospital a week or two ago. And my heart breaks…simply breaks in half…because I failed to seize the day when he was two. Or four. Or six. Or even 10. Yes, I worked full time and odd hours, but I really thought I was making the most of those early years, savoring precious moments. When older moms would tell me, “Enjoy these days—they grow so fast,” I thought, “Yeah, yeah…you really have no idea what my day has been like.”

What I wouldn’t give to have just a few hours with my son again at two. Or four. Even if he was having a bad day. Now, I would record it with my iPhone and show it to him when he got older. And laugh about his “angry face.”

I have so many wonderful friends who are amazing young mothers or will be some day. So I’m going to ask forgiveness right now if I feel compelled to remind you to enjoy your brief time with your little ones. Because I really wish more people had reminded me to seize the day SPECTRUM when I still could.

’m seeing some unfortunate trends growing in schools and families, and I feel compelled to issue a challenge to teachers and parents while there is still time in the school year to make a difference:

Teachers—you are so valuable in the lives of your students, and yet often undervalued in the impact you make. Don’t let discouragement keep you from becoming involved in your students’ lives. You interact with many different personalities throughout your day, and some kids are naturally easier to connect with. Make an effort to connect with the others. Recognize the kids who are ignored and seek out a conversation. The reality is that you may be the only person who acknowledges them during the school day. Teach kids to be responsible for their choices, and tell them you are proud of them when they work hard. Kids need you to believe in them, to understand, and to help them learn despite challenges they face at home or with peers. Welcome kids who seek out extra help, because if they feel like they’re an annoyance they won’t come back. Be available to your students, and communicate that they matter.

Parents—recognize that education is so much more than grades. Kids are learning lifelong lessons at school. What are you supporting at home? Hard work, discipline, responsibility, and the ability to stick it out? Or that there is always an easy way out and that excuses help avoid doing the work?

Teachers aren’t simply teaching a subject; they often spend more time with your kids than you do. Education is more successful when it’s a team effort, and teachers need your support of their expectations. Stop complaining that it’s the teachers’ fault for kids failing. Go to conferences. Talk to the teachers and participate in your children’s education before it’s time for grades to come out.

Constructively voice your concerns with the teacher before going to the administration. No matter your feelings for a teacher, show respect and expect your kids to follow suit. Value your children’s SPECTRUM teachers; they play a vital role in the adults our children become.

Giving Your Teen the Silent Treatment

I

t takes two to tango. You cannot have a tug of war without people pulling on both ends of the rope. And an argument between a parent and a teenager requires both participants to vocally state their point of view on the issue at hand.

To halt the tango, one partner merely has to stop moving. To end the tug of war, the people on one end of the rope merely need to let go. And to stop the argument, one person just has to stop speaking.

In short, one way to handle an argumentative teenager is to not speak. Silence makes anyone uncomfortable, especially teenagers. They simply are not accustomed to having their parents in their physical presence and saying nothing. Try it and watch your teen twitch.

I am particularly in favor of trying silence when teenagers are at their verbal worst.

That is, when they are calling people names, threatening to move out or quit school, making declarations about not being loved, or using any of the crude insults they’ve learned to deploy in their campaign to dominate their parents. Unfortunately, when teenagers behave this way, they are being so provocative that most adults feel compelled to respond. But no matter how difficult it may be, my recommendation is that parents refrain from speaking—merely stare and say nothing.

When teenagers argue, they are dominated by an emotional, reactive part of the brain. This part has little capacity for reflection. But when emotion subsides, a more reflective part of the brain takes over and reviews the argument made by the reactive part. In a sense, it reviews the mental tape that was “recording” while the argument took place. If there is only one voice on the tape (the teenager’s), and it sounds idiotic at best and virtually insane at worst, the reflective part of the brain will notice and possibly learn from it. However, if there are two voices on the tape—the teen’s and the parent’s—and both are exhibiting idiocy and possibly insanity, the reflective part of the teenager’s brain will later rule that the reactive part was fully justified in all it said (and did).

I hazard to guess it would be almost impossible to find a parent of a teenager who hasn’t felt bad about having an argument with his or her lovely but occasionally contentious child. I would also hazard to guess it would be virtually impossible to find a parent who ever won such an argument. That is, a situation where a parent argued a point so successfully that the teenager, in the middle of the argument, stopped, complimented the wisdom of the parent’s perspective, and promised to do better in the future.

Regardless of who is involved, most arguments merely match reactive brain part against reactive brain part, and neither side gives an inch. That is why the argument—although widely and frequently used—is not a very effective strategy for teaching a teenager something.

Teaching can take place only when someone is willing to listen.

By becoming the silent partner in an argument with your teen, you can set the stage for some real teaching to begin.

ommy Brain. Daddy Brain. You’d think two brains are better than one. With many of us working a full-time job, running a household, and raising kids, life moves at warp speed. But sometimes your brain doesn’t keep up.

Friends of ours live in the suburbs of Chicago. Shelley works downtown and commutes by train. Jim is a teacher and takes their two boys to school every day. Needless to say, mornings are hectic! One fall morning, all was well until Jim stopped to drop off four-year-old Mark at preschool all dressed up for pajama day. But guess what… it wasn’t pajama day for Mark; it was pajama day for six-year-old Ethan! Poor Mark was so upset that he was the only one in his tight Spiderman pajamas and begged to go home to change. Guilt overwhelmed Jim, but he left his pajama boy so he could make it to work on time. With mom halfway to Michigan Avenue, poor Mark had to endure the day as “the boy who came to preschool in pajamas.”

Weeks earlier, the same friends had gone to a function at their church on Halloween. In years past, every child had worn their costumes to the Halloween party. But this time, it was on Sunday following the traditional service and Shelley and Jim, like always, brought the boys in their costumes. Oops! Mark and Ethan were the only kids in costume at church…on stage. Shelley and Mark squirmed in the pew. The boys were mortified.

Just like many of us, they earned their “Parents of the Year” award. Overstressed and operating on autopilot, they thought they were doing what was best for their boys only to discover that they’d subjected the whole family to humiliating situations! Well…if we as parents aren’t there to SPECTRUM embarrass them, who will be, right?

here is no doubt that children are wonderful. Besides having the most beautiful, innocent, and open-minded outlooks on life, they often teach us lessons and encourage us to be better people.

Every issue, Family Spectrum features a nominated child in “Young Hero,” a story sponsored by the Omaha Storm Chasers. Some Young Hero depict a particular moment in a child’s life whereas others give a general profile of a child. With each unique Young Hero, parents and guardians have expressed how they have inspired not only the other children around them, but the adults as well.

In the last five issues, we have featured amazing Young Heroes, all of whom are different from the next. In November, we featured Cole Klein, a fourth grader with a congenital heart defect who has been through multiple surgeries since the day he was born. In December, we featured four-year-old Charlie Smith, who was born with a hearing impairment and low muscle tone that required him to learn new methods of communicating with others. In January, we featured fifth grader Jack Tracy, who played the role of Fritz in Ballet Nebraska’s The Nutcracker. In February, we featured eight-yearold Emily Koesters, who has a rare genetic dwarfism and a passion for taking care of animals. And in March, we featured 15-year-old Caleb Wagner, who doesn’t let his parents pay for anything because he wants to buy things for himself.

The Rose Theater Offering Summer Classes for Kids

The Rose Brigade is made up of selected students who take class once a week and perform before regular season productions.

T

he Rose Theater is known in Omaha for having family-friendly musical and theatrical productions. In fact, they’re finishing up their 2011-2012 season with Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type (March 30-April 15), James and the Giant Peach (April 27-May 13), and Seussical the Musical (June 1-17), all of which are based on beloved children’s books. But what most people don’t know is that The Rose goes beyond just showing productions—it invites kids to be in productions!

Whether it’s acting, singing, or dancing, The Rose’s summer programs and camps give kids of all ages and skill levels their moment on stage. With two programs—DRAMA at The Rose and BROADWAY at The Rose—and all types of classes for ages 3-18, there’s something for every kid. And parents—it’s not just all about the kids. Many of the classes and camps have special performances after the program conclusion just for you, so that you can watch your kids showcase what they’ve learned.

DRAMA AT THE ROSE DRAMA at The Rose helps kids enhance their creativity and imagination with professionally instructed classes in acting, playwriting, directing, stagecraft, puppetry, filmmaking, improvisation, and more. Fun, theme-oriented classes that promote ensemble work, as well as individual skill-building and personal development, are core components of this program. Most of the drama classes are only offered at The Rose Theater; however, some are offered at farther west locations such as Skutt Catholic

High School (3131 S. 156th St) or Rose Theater West Studio (2392 N. 90th St). The drama summer program even includes a special class for high-functioning children on the autism spectrum in partnership with Autism Society of Nebraska.

“I think there is something for everyone in our summer camps,” says Brian Guehring, the education director and playwright in residence, who is in charge of DRAMA at The Rose. “The wide range of classes we offer are perfect to keep challenging our returning, experienced students and also introduce new students to the excitement of theater.”

There are three main sections within the DRAMA at The Rose program: Weeklong Drama Adventures, Acting in a Summer Play Three-Week Camps, and an Overnight Camp.

themes, improvisational scenes, colorful characters, and non-stop fun. There’s a class for every skill level, ranging from an “Under the Sea”-themed class for kids ages 4-6, to a Whose Line Is It Anyway? class for kids ages 10-15. Some classes even collaborate with the Omaha Children’s Museum and the Joslyn Art Museum. Classes are offered Monday - Friday at three convenient locations and are led by a veteran professional. Each class ends with a time to share favorite moments with parents, family, and friends.

With three-week production camps, students will put on a full production with lines to memorize, costumes to wear, stage lights, props, and three full performances. These are great classes for students who want the full experience of putting on a play.

There is a lot of work involved, and the classes go all day, which is why this camp is offered for ages 8-18. The scripts chosen for production camps are ensemble pieces, which means everyone in the cast will have a lot of stage time, lines, and will be integral to the show. These are great opportunities to go through auditions, rehearsals, and performances while working in a big group and continuing to develop acting skills.

With the overnight camp at Platte River State Park in Louisville, Neb., the students stay in cabins and do acting activities while also getting to ride horses, do archery, and swim. The week ends with a barbeque where parents are invited out to see final skits.

Guehring loves the inspiration and creativity that comes out of the kids during these summer classes. “There is no better way to enjoy the summer than meeting new friends, creating silly characters, playing drama games, and developing your acting skills.” He believes The Rose offers the best drama education in the region. “Our classes are led by experienced, educated, and talented teaching artists and assisted by enthusiastic, talented, and wonderful teaching interns. The drama classes at The Rose help young artists grow, learn, and gain self-confidence.”

Guehring says some of his favorite drama classes to teach are the Harry Potter Camp and the Whose Line Is It Anyway? Improv Acting Class. “It is so fun to become one of the teachers from Hogwarts to bring those classes to life…and I love playing improv games…the students in those classes are so creative and funny.”

BROADWAY AT THE ROSE “This season, a new program started called BROADWAY at The Rose,” says Julie Walker, managing director of The Rose. “This is an education program, teaching students in musical theater, acting, and dance.”

BROADWAY at The Rose offers students a complete and pre-professional musical theater, voice, and dance training experience taught by the region’s top performing arts practitioners. All skill levels are welcome, from recreational learners looking for quality, technique-based instruction to aspiring professionals in need of an intense, accelerated course of study.

DRAMA at The Rose and BROADWAY at The Rose enhance creativity and imagination, and help kids make new friends while having fun.

“BROADWAY at the Rose is beneficial for kids because it allows them to learn the techniques needed to be successful in musical theater, [such as] proper voice, dance, and acting technique,” says Sue Gillespie Booton, the director of the BROADWAY program and a regular season performer at The Rose. “It’s the performer’s job to learn the skills and make them appear flawless. We teach them how to do that in a positive, professional environment.”

National guest artist workshops are available through the program, as are opportunities to participate in local and national competitions and perform with the pros in big, fully produced musicals at the theater. All classes culminate with a season-end performance on the main stage. BROADWAY at The Rose allows students to choose one or two classes à la carte, design their own program, or choose an accelerated program to maximize their skill development.

“One of the Broadway classes is called Brigade, and [after auditions] selected students take class once a week and also perform as a pre-show troupe before selected performances at each of our regular season productions,” says Walker.

Like the drama classes, most of these classes are offered only at The Rose Theater; however, some are offered at Rose Theater West Studio (2392 N. 90th St) or Lakeside Church (2339 N. 90th St).

There are three main sections within the BROADWAY at The Rose program: Dance Camps, Musical Theater Camps, and Acting & Voice Camps.

With dance, it’s important to continually train the muscle memory and routinely practice the fine technique necessary for a strong foundation. This is why dance camps are so important to the BROADWAY program. Students of all skill levels are welcome with beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes offered. Whether it’s through jazz, hip-hop, tap, ballet, lyrical, pointe, cheerleading/dance team, or Pilates, the student dancers will stay in shape and keep excelling toward their full potential through a variety of challenging summer classes.

and songs while learning vocal technique and choreography from accomplished artists. From Disney-themed camps to “Rockin’ Around Broadway”—which features scenes from Hairspray, Grease, Jersey Boys, and Little Shop of Horrors—musical theater students will have the opportunity to develop great stage skills while having a blast.

With acting and voice camps, students will learn to improve their singing and auditioning skills with seasoned professionals of the stage. For kids who are interested in auditioning for The Rose Brigade—which performs before the regular season performances—or kids looking to work in commercials, television, movies, or just musicals at their school, taking these courses is a must!

“It is exciting for me to be able to work with students who love to work hard and want to be good performers,” says Booton. “I can totally relate to them, as I was the same way when I was their age. It is exciting to see them succeed. The lessons learned in this type of training doesn’t just stop at singing, dancing, and acting.

Students learn life lessons about working hard, being a team player, self-confidence, and so much more.”

While summer is a nice break away from school, studies have shown that kids who get involved in camps or classes during the summer actually perform better during the following school year because they keep their minds active, develop better social

Many people believe that reptiles are the kings of camo! However, cephalopods (sef-uh-luh-pods) are quite skilled at camouflaging themselves.

The most commonly known cephalopods are octopus, cuttlefish, and squid. Some of these animals are able to change the color and pattern of their skin to blend in with their surroundings. Check out the cuttlefish at the Scott Aquarium to see if you can see some magnificent camouflage skills in action!

A penguin’s body is shaped like a football. This allows them to fly through the water with ease!

The bands act like an ID bracelet and help us tell our penguins apart from one another. Male penguins wear black bands and females wear white bands.

Each band has 2 to 4 colored beads on it and each bead is assigned a number. For instance, the white bead stands for number 0, the yellow bead stands for number 5, and so on.

There are seven types of sea turtles: Flatback, Green, Hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, Leatherback, Loggerhead, and Olive ridley. All 7 sea turtles are endangered (that means there are not many left in the wild). There are many reasons why sea turtles are endangered. A big reason is because of pollution, like plastic floating in the ocean.

What is one type of food that some sea turtles eat? Jellyfish Many times sea turtles confuse plastic bags in the ocean for jellyfish.

Plastic polluting the oceans kills about 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals each year.

What’s A Wobbegong?

A Wobbegong (pronounced wob-ee-gong) is a type of shark.

These highly camouflaged sharks dwell on the bottom of our tanks and are often overlooked by Zoo visitors.

There are twelve different kinds of Wobbegong sharks in the world.

We have three here at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.

Do you think they look like carpets? These types of sharks are also known as carpet

sharks because they have a flat appearance and travel along the sandy bottom of the ocean where they can hide. They can be found in the warm, tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean around Australia and Japan, in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia, and the South China Sea. The color of Wobbegong sharks help camouflage them from predators like larger sharks and whales. Their teeth are long, thin and fang-like. They have two rows of teeth on the top and three rows on the bottom. Favorite foods are crabs, lobster and octopus! They will also eat sea bass, luderick (a type of fish), smaller sharks and rays. Wobbegongs are nocturnal and like to hunt at night. Sometimes they lie perfectly still and wait for prey to swim close to their mouths, then.....chomp!

Here are some cool facts about these sharks.

Female Wobbegong sharks carry eggs, but give birth to live young, called pups.

The name Wobbegong comes from the Australian Aboriginal language and is thought to mean “shaggy beard” because they have shaggy tassels growing around their mouths.

Echinoderm

Some animals in this group are the sea star, sea cucumber, and sea urchin. (ih-kahy-nuh-durm) These animals have a radiating arrangement of parts.

Bird Reptile Arthropod

Types of animals in this group include flamingos, owls, and penguins.

Birds are characterized by having feathers.

Snakes, alligators, and lizards are types of animals included in this group. Reptiles are usually recognized by the presence of scales.

Species can include spiders, shrimp, and crabs. They have segmented bodies and an exoskeleton, which they shed as they grow.

This should be an easy one. There is only one animal (paw-rif-er-uh) in this group, the sponge!

Look out for these guys! Sharks and stingrays are

Life Underwater Living life in the ocean isn’t always simple. Many ocean animals have unique ways of moving, eating, and hiding which help them live life a little easier. These are called adaptations (a special feature that helps an animal or plant live and grow).

Unique in its appearance, this drifter maintains an upside down posture. This allows algae in its bell-shaped body to grow and create food from sunlight reaching into the ocean.

In its natural habitat, a certain sideways walking creature has

found a friend for life in the upside down jellyfish.

It will often use the jellyfish as a shield to protect itself from predators! The upside down bell shape makes it easy for this small, sometimes red friend, to carry the jellyfish on its back, while it uses its tentacles to fight off unwanted company.

Sixth grade camp was the best experience I’ve ever had at Pawnee in the seven years I have been here. I was in the orange group with Pieter, Chris, Jasmine, and 13 other kids. There were six activities. There were high trust, low trust, zip line, canoeing, and archery. The last one was S’mores. I only participated in four of the six activities. I didn’t try to do the zip line, but I did get up to the small platform for high trust. Then I just came back down, because these two activities were high and just a little too far out of my comfort zone.

Archery was really fun, although if you got snapped in the arm when the band was shooting back, boy, did it hurt! Canoeing was my favorite activity the whole time we were at camp! I learned that it requires a lot of strength, cooperation, balance, and overall teamwork. If you don’t do these things, you could end up with your partner waist deep, or deeper, in the mucky water. Yuck!

Low trust really lives up to its name. You have to trust people to either get plywood over fake quicksand or over a spinning barrel.

Our last activity was S’mores. We got to toast our own marshmallows by ourselves. Even though the fire was barely singeing our marshmallows, I still managed to burn mine to a crisp! They were still mouth-watering delicious.

My two favorite parts of camp were canoeing and archery. I also liked the lunches. (Who wouldn’t?) W hen we were at camp, we were learning at the same time we were having fun. I learned we needed to work together and trust ourselves to complete the challenges thrown at us. I loved every minute of it.

acki Groesser received a dual endorsement from the University of Nebraska­—Lincoln in elementary education and special education. She began her teaching career in 1989 in Butte, Neb., as a special education teacher for grades K-12. In 1993, Jacki moved to Southern Public Schools in Wymore, Neb., to take the position of the K-6 class-within-a-class special education teacher, where she spent 11 years until she got married in 2005 and moved to Ralston. After being hired by Ralston Public Schools, she was placed at Ralston Middle School as a seventh grade special education teacher.

In 2008, Jacki earned an additional endorsement in middle school social studies from Peru State College and was moved to the position of seventh grade world history teacher, where she has the opportunity to teach ancient world history, the development of civilizations, and the five main world religions. Jacki is currently in her 22nd year of teaching. She lives in Ralston with her husband Brad and has three sons, twins Christian and Codie and stepson Logan. Jacki loves to read, play the piano, spend time with her family, and plan lessons that will make history interesting for her students.

“Jacki is one of those truly dynamic teachers because she excels at creating a rapport with all of her students and an engaging atmosphere within her classroom. I think what separates her from all of the other quality teachers is that she has really high expectations for her curriculum…she strives to get the most out of her students,” says Andy Parizek, Assistant Principal at Ralston Middle School.

I

n 1928, 202 acres of forest entered into the Omaha Park system. Hummel Park is a beautiful, nature-rich park with large oaks and stunning hickory trees. However, it is best known for the amazing summer memories it has created in the lives of Omaha youth for over 60 years.

The park started hosting a day camp in 1949, making Hummel Day Camp the longest running program the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department offers. One might wonder how—with the demand of technology and the overscheduled family lifestyles—does a simple outdoor day camp survive? It’s the love of outdoor activities.

Archery, slimy snail hunts, spontaneous water fights, creepy crawler critters on nature hikes, tie dying bandanas, singing silly songs, and cooking over a campfire. A summer day at Hummel can be blistering hot or peacefully cool. Either way, the sounds of fun and laughter can always be heard.

Due to the flood last summer, the day camp was cancelled. This summer’s participants will be the first to experience the camp with a new facility.

Hummel Nature Center is a 2,700 square-foot building creating a new area for the camp to explore nature hike findings, share stories and songs, SPECTRUM and enjoy a s’more or two.

P Teen Voice: He Said/She Said Politics

W

ith the upcoming 2012 election looming over our heads, politics is now one of the hottest topics in the nation. I’m not allowed to cast a vote, for I am only 15 years old. So what significance does politics hold for me? Over the past year or so, I’ve developed a growing interest in the campaigns, candidates, and so on. I believe this partially has to do with my age.

Before, I felt completely lost whenever politics popped up, but as I get older, I am able to understand what is really going on. As a result, I’m highly anticipating the outcome to the 2012 election.

Another thing that has played a big role in my interest in politics is my father. He never hesitates to voice his opinion, and that’s something I admire about him. My father and mother both definitely have influenced my opinion on some issues, but there are others we vary in. Yet I find myself having a strong opinion like my father, and am unwavering in my beliefs.

Most of my friends have yet to form an opinion and don’t care for politics. I have a few friends who are mildly interested, like myself. Sometimes we discuss and debate what we believe and our opinions. I enjoy listening to my friends because they grew up in a different household from myself, so their opinions may be completely different from my own.

Overall, I enjoy politics and hearing what other people have to say about them.

My beliefs have mostly come from my family members, and the way they raised me. I cannot wait to see who is going to win the 2012 election, and I hope that our country will improve with the help of great leadership thanks to the voters.

olitics can be a very tricky and touchy subject for people of all ages to talk about. I think this is true because when we discuss presidential candidates, we also tend to talk about their values. Talking about many values almost always brings up sensitive subjects like religion, abortion, and same-sex marriage. Often these topics can strike close to home and hurt feelings can ensue. This is also the reason why these matters are never good to bring up with friends.

With the elections approaching, the media outlets are bombarded with presidential candidates, and they are almost impossible to avoid. This is also the main reason why kids are caught up in politics at such an early age. Kids are watching TV, and the commercials are playing constantly.

Parents also talk about politics, and this is the other main source in which kids can absorb political information. I personally think this is the most important influence. I remember when the last presidential election was going on and my friends and I were talking about who we would vote for. The common theme that was brought up by kids was that we didn’t really know what each candidate’s values and plans were, but since our parents were voting for them, then we liked them, too. This is easily the way most kids make their judgments on who they want to win the election. At a young age, kids are not often talking about politics beyond the basic facts, and they only recognize what the candidates look like, not what they stand for. Because of this, they tend to pick up information any way possible; and who better to pick up information than from their parents.

I don’t think that kids my age spend too much time thinking about politics, but it’s always in the back of our minds. Now that we are in high school and politics are becoming a bigger part of our lives, it is important to gather as much information as possible from multiple sources, not just our parents. We realize now more than ever that these people that are running for office will SPECTRUM be determining our future.

I

t is often difficult to interest children in history, and it can be even more difficult to awaken their social conscience. This year, let the holiday founded in Nebraska open the door to history and build a foundation for stewardship.

Arbor Day—an often underappreciated and overlooked holiday—was started in Nebraska in 1872 and celebrates the role of trees in our lives.

When J. Sterling Morton and his wife settled in Nebraska City in 1854, they found themselves in a nearly treeless land. They quickly planted trees and other vegetation on their land. As a journalist, Morton spread information about trees and the essential role they play as windbreaks, fuel, and building materials, not to mention shade from the sun.

Morton envisioned setting aside a specific day to plant trees, and the seeds of Arbor Day were planted. More than 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day in 1872. Today, National Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states, usually on the last Friday in April—although it varies from state to state based on growing seasons.

Most holidays celebrate something that has already happened, but Arbor Day reflects a hope for the future, according to Morton. Trees planted on Arbor Day show a concern for future generations.

Your family can celebrate Arbor Day simply by planting a tree or pitching in to clean up a public park. Visit ArborDay.org for more information about selecting trees and planting them properly.

Or pack up the family and head to Nebraska City for the 140th annual Arbor Day Celebration from April 27-29. The community festival includes children’s educational activities, a parade, a 5K and 10K run/walk, and free trees. While you’re there, be sure to visit Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure, where you can climb a 50-foot-tall tree house, hike miles of wooded trails, and journey deep into the forest aboard the Discovery Ride. And check out J. Sterling Morton’s 52-room mansion at the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum.
