Change is definitely in the air. Spring has almost sprung, and thankfully winter is on its way out. Soon we will see the sun more frequently, road salt and snow-covered sidewalks will be replaced with bicycles and pedestrians, and our backyards will once again boast patio furniture and green lawns, instead of covered grills and brown grass.

Here at Family Spectrum, perhaps the most noticeable change is a new editor. Turns out that spring is the perfect time of year for such an exciting renewal. As the new editor, I am looking forward to continuing the tradition of bringing fabulous ideas and exciting stories to you, our readers. It is with great excitement that I join the team here at Omaha Publications. While Becki’s shoes will be impossible to fill, I am confident we will have fun, learn lots, and get to know even more about Omaha while I try to do just that—gracefully grab the baton in new shoes. Wish me luck!

Family Spectrum is a special publication, created to help and empower parents and to energize families with great stories, interesting family-friendly topics, and resources on everything from basic safety to a calendar of family events. Being a part of such an enriching magazine will no doubt be extremely rewarding. Knowing that families will benefit from, and look forward to, the information within these pages is a definite responsibility—one I take seriously. I promise to keep the content fresh, meaningful and inspiring.

It is so exciting to have a platform that helps encourage families to get out and play together, to get to know more about their community, and to read up on child behavior, and how to tackle all ages of child development (and the ups and downs that come with each stage). And as someone who is very interested in feeding my family fresh healthy food, I am planning to start a new column devoted to healthy recipes submitted by our readers. So think about what is on your dinner table tonight, and email me your healthy and delicious recipes. You just might end up featured in the next issue.

There is nothing more rewarding than watching Andrew pick his favorite books and reading together as a way to wind down and relax. My little guy is only 3, yet he already enjoys a great story. When he chooses The Cat in the Hat or The Sneetches and Other Stories, I can’t help but laugh—for even though I am much past the age of 3, Seuss has a way with words.

His stories are rich and have a depth that is hard to parallel, no matter your age. So help celebrate Dr. Seuss’ 107th birthday and be sure to visit your local library branch today. Check out a few Seuss titles, you will be happy you did! When Parents Disagree

A

s any parent can tell you—

parenting brings challenges! We are all experts until we are in the thick of things and surprising developments come along.

I doubt that any parent would plan ahead to engage in disciplinary deadlock with the child’s other parent! However, all of us bring our history, our own “baggage,” into relationships. This can make for interesting variety, at best—and big disagreements, at worst. In some ways, an adult’s parenting style is affected by his or her own upbringing—whether intended, or not.

Consistency is the ideal setting and enforcing rules. What if one parent is more lenient, while the other takes a firm approach? Does it mean one is right and the other wrong? Not necessarily, but it does mean that in the ideal world, they would communicate and cooperate with each other to come up with a workable plan. This is important whether parents are together or separated by divorce or other issues, and possibly even more essential in those circumstances.

One might ask how parents who no longer relate to each other well should, in fact, cooperate in this ideal way. A respectful attitude can still be maintained, even in the face of painful or bitter arguments between them. The most well-adjusted children of divorce come from homes where the parents can be adult enough to attain a respectful level of cooperation and mutual support regarding the children’s care and discipline. Of course, if there is any sort of abuse or neglect occurring, other authorities should be contacted to assist in protecting the children. They may also seek out professionals who guide warring parents through mediation services.

Methodist Women’s Hospital Promotes Prematurity Awareness with Clothing Collection

The response was overwhelming. In just a few week’s time, six laundry baskets full of a mix of new and used preemie clothing were collected, along with 30 new “Baby’s First Christmas” onesies, a baby glider, 20 blankets, and three micro-preemie wraps.

One circumstance few parents-to-be plan for however is a premature birth. According to the March of Dimes, one in eight babies born in the United States will be premature — more than 543,000 annually.

Yet, due to the unpredictability of premature births, families often arrive at the hospital with clothes that will not comfortably or safely fit their newborn. At Methodist Women’s Hospital (192nd and West Dodge Road) last November, the families of NICU graduates did their best to help fill the need for parents suddenly thrust into parenthood.

Methodist Women’s Hospital invited the entire community to participate in a baby shower for the patients of its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) throughout November. Parents of former NICU patients contributed new or gently used preemie or newborn-sized clothing, bouncy seats, blankets and other items.

“Parents of NICU babies usually don’t anticipate a premature birth so they haven’t shopped for preemiesized clothing,” said Cindy Mirfield, Methodist Women’s Hospital NICU service leader. “By having some of these items on hand, we hope to give our families one less thing to worry about.”

don’t know if you’ve noticed (and if you haven’t then you aren’t

paying attention), but the number of children that are overweight or obese is growing at an alarming rate. I believe this problem begins at home. Parents are the ones responsible for teaching their children what is right and wrong. Today it seems we don’t take any time to teach them what is right to eat and what they shouldn’t be putting into their body.

We use the excuse that we are too busy and don’t have enough time to make a dinner that is healthy for our families to eat. But it doesn’t take that much time to prepare foods that are more nutritious than hitting the drive-through or popping something in the microwave. Kids these days are growing up thinking that dinosaur chicken nuggets and mac ‘n’ cheese are the staples of lunch and dinner. We have forgotten that they need proper nutrition to grow up healthy. America needs to get back to the basics, teaching our children that eating fruits, veggies and lean meats like chicken and fish is going to help them grow up strong and healthy. This has to start with the parents. If the parents are eating garbage all of the time, children are going to want to eat those same foods. How does the saying go? Do as you say, not as you do? Sorry, but that just won’t work. If parents are not taking care of themselves, how can they expect their children to be making good decisions when it comes to food?

This problem needs to be addressed now. No one wants their child to suffer from being overweight or worse—develop a preventable disease because we were “too busy” to make sure they learned healthy habits.

Start with trying to get them to eat fresh fruit as a snack. Children don’t need to think that they need a handful of Goldfish, fruit snacks, or some sort of sugary food wrapped in Sponge Bob packaging. You will find that children enjoy fruit if you take the time to give it to them. Next, try to make dinner for the family a few nights a week. As you begin to introduce them to better foods, it will be easier to get them to want to eat those types of foods more and more as they grow up. You can also let them help. Cooking

Seven Secret Shortcuts

5. Overhead Shelf - This works very well

W

6. Baskets - There’s simply no easier way to pull a room together after an invasion of little people. They work wonderfully to collect toys and move them from room to room. It also makes it easier to teach a child about “clean-up time” when all you have to do is put the toys back into a basket.

for New Parents

hen I first discovered I was going to have a baby, I was determined to be super-

organized. I found every “newborn needs” list I could find. I cross-referenced, I computerized. I then headed out to have the most complete baby registry and well-stocked nursery in Nebraska.

A few years and a couple of babies later, I found a few items indispensable, but you won’t find them in the baby department.

1. Cell or Cordless Phone - This doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, but you should be able

to turn off the ringer. Caller ID is nice too, but not essential. If you are going to be home alone with the baby, you will quickly see how nice it is to be able to reach the phone and keep a hand on the baby.

You’ll carry it with you at bathtime. And it will pay for itself the first time you have to call the doctor in the middle of the night because you baby is running a wicked fever. You’ll be running between the nursery and kitchen and medicine cabinet and still be able to talk to the doctor.

2. Ear Thermometer (and supply of covers) - Pediatricians prefer rectal thermometers for

accuracy, but that can come later. There’s nothing quicker than an ear thermometer to learn if you have a feverish child. If it indicates a high temp, you can always use more intrusive measures. And when dealing with a sick child, the last thing you need is a frantic search for a cover. Ear thermometers will not work without them.

3. Room-darkening Shades - Cute, lacy curtains are sweet, but they don’t do the job at naptime.

I put a blanket over my son’s window until I finally got a clue and bought a shade. They are easy, cheap, and they eliminate the concern over hanging cords. Babies need to learn early on that when it’s dark, it’s sleeptime.

7. Plastic Storage Boxes - You know, the

heavy-duty kind. You won’t believe how fast your child grows out of his clothes, especially that first year. I just keep a box in the closet, so when an item no longer fits, it goes into the box. When it’s full, it goes into storage or to charity. Mark it with the sizes and gender (Birth to 3 months-Boy)... and so on. Then, it’s easy to find for another baby, for lending, or for a garage sale one day.

The beauty of this short list is that none of these items costs much­—but they can make your life a little easier, at a time when anyone can use a helping hand. And greater efficiency means more quality time to spend with your new baby.

4. Low Bookshelf - I didn’t get one until my son was a few months old, and I was amazed at the

difference it made in organizing the nursery. You can use the shelves for toys or even diapers until books crowd them out. Your child will then be able to reach and enjoy her books by herself as she grows.

Again, this doesn’t have to be fancy. I paid $1 for mine at a garage sale, and painted it a bright red.

You’d never know it wasn’t purchased at the “baby store.” Just make sure that the shelf is toddler-safe, which probably means attaching it to the wall so it won’t tip over.

athome Steak with Ginger Plum Barbecue Sauce Ingredients • 1 beef top round steak, cut 3/4 inch thick (about 1 pound) • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 2 cups thinly sliced carrots • 3 cups fresh pea pods, strings removed • 1 clove garlic, minced • Salt and black pepper • 3 cups hot cooked jasmine rice, prepared without butter or salt • Chopped fresh cilantro Marinade • 1/2 cup prepared plum sauce • 2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons ketchup • 1 tablespoon minced garlic • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper Instructions: 1. Combine marinade ingredients in small bowl. Place beef steak and 1/2 cup marinade in food-safe plastic bag; turn steak to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 6 hours or as long as overnight, turning occasionally. Cover and reserve remaining marinade in refrigerator.

2. Remove steak from marinade; discard marinade. Place steak on grid over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, uncovered, 8 to 9 minutes for medium rare doneness, turning occasionally and basting with some of the reserved marinade during last 2 to 3 minutes of grilling.

3. Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add carrots; stir-fry 5 minutes. Add pea pods and garlic; stir-fry 2 minutes.

Volume is not the solution.

If you say “No” and your child ignores you, repeating it multiple times as loud as you possibly can is not going to help her understand the meaning of “No.” It will just result in her putting her hands over her ears or becoming very good at tuning you out. Just as a stoplight does not get brighter when it turns red, there is no need to make your “No” louder.

Action is the key.

To Know About “No”

H

ave you ever said “No” to your child? Of course you have. The use of “No” certainly has its place, but only if it’s used effectively. The problem is, “No” is just a word. Likewise, a tornado siren is just a sound and a traffic signal is just a light until they are associated with something that is meaningful to us. We take action when we see a traffic light turn red or hear a tornado siren because we know they are associated with important events. If your child is going to respond to you when you say “No,” then he needs to know that there will be some meaningful action associated with it.

Here are a few things to consider when helping your child learn the meaning of “No.” “No” is not a suggestion.

When you say “No,” it means “Stop.” Providing immediate consequences, consistently and frequently, will help your child learn this.

After you have issued one “No,” your child needs to receive feedback from you. If he stopped and complied when you said “No,” praise him. If he ignores you, respond in the most appropriate manner necessary to help him understand that “No” is not a suggestion, it’s a demand.

Saying “No” multiple times, with no meaningful consequence, teaches your child that it’s a demand that can be ignored. This, in turn, reduces your authority as a parent and increases the likelihood your child will learn to ignore future requests. On the other hand, providing immediate and meaningful consequences after you have issued a “No” will help your child find meaning in your command and will serve as a future cue that he needs to pay attention when he hears “No.”

Boss?

C

hildren WILL encounter bossy

friends, teammates, and possibly relatives. Teaching your child to become assertive is a life skill he/she will gratefully utilize throughout his/her life. Helping your child to become assertive means demonstrating confidence in their decision-making skills and the ability to remain solid or firm when others attempt to persuade them. Assertiveness does not mean that they become rude, selfish or domineering. Instead they choose their actions and are not manipulated by others.

The Search Institute has identified 40 building blocks of healthy development—known as the Developmental Assets. Assets that help your child stand up for themselves are listed in the Social Competencies section which include the following: #32 - Planning and Decision–Making #33 - Interpersonal Competence #35 - Resistance Skills #36 - Peaceful Conflict Resolution Tips to help your child become more assertive:

• Explain why the other child is bossy. Perhaps the other child believes they really ARE the center of the universe, their parents have rarely said “no,” they think what is important to them should be important to everyone, or possibly they may need to “feel” in control to reduce their own anxiety.

• Clarity that your child is not responsible for the happiness of others. Of course children should be helpful, kind, polite, share and take turns. However, if they try to please everyone they will be unsuccessful and unhappy.

• Stand tall. When a typically bossy or manipulative friend approaches, smile, make eye contact, stand with feet apart and firmly planted with one foot slightly ahead of the other, shoulders square and hands on hips. This gives you a confident look yet puts a slight barrier between you and the other person. You want to feel and look as big as possible. You do not want to look like an easy target.

• Rarely give an immediate response. Tell the other person you will get back to them. When the child is under pressure (and he/she will be), tell the friend again you need to check on it, think about it, etc. If they pressure you again say, “Well, it looks like you need an immediate answer, so I will have to say NO.” Then change the subject.

• Role playing. Practice in front of a mirror or role play using an assertive voice and body language in front of a mirror. You can even turn the practice into a game with parents or siblings acting like the bossy friend.

• Help your child understand that it’s OK to change their mind. They have the power and responsibility to change their mind. This is especially true if the request is hurtful, illegal, or puts an unreasonable burden on them.

• Limit contact! Stay away from bossy or manipulative people as much as possible.

They are not interested in being a true friend.

This can be especially hard if they share a teacher, coach or even a grandmother, but you can find a respectful way to limit contact.

Being manipulated and bullied into doing something you do not want to do gives away your power.

Following these eight steps can help your child be assertive and protects them from bossy friends.

A Home Away From Home

T

he environment at Spring Lake Elementary in the heart

of South Omaha is warm and inviting from the moment you walk in the front door. Every administrator, teacher, or staff member greets every student, whether they are in their classroom or not.

Spring Lake prides itself on the power of its partnerships with teachers, parents and students. They work together to help make children want to go to school every day. This positive atmosphere of knowing everyone and everything going on in school presents an opportunity for parents to never wonder what their child does every day.

Cynthia Wichman-Jimenez, whose five children attend Spring Lake, says keeping track of each assignment or activity for each child isn’t easy. Being able to go in before and after school to talk with teachers keeps her on top of everything.

“It makes it easy that we can talk face to face,” Jimenez says. “Being in the know gives me a one-up on them.”

Before Jimenez got involved, she relied on her children to keep her informed on what was going on in school. Now she knows, even before she asks, what her children’s assignments are, and that she has to sign off in their assignment books.

At home, Jimenez helps her children every night with homework and talks with them about what they learned at school, and is able to get more than a usual “Nothing.” On nights when her children don’t have any homework, they read books together.

“Books are the best thing you can give your kid,” Jimenez says. “Reading at home has made them better at school.”

The partnership between Spring Lake and its parents extends beyond just keeping children on track academically. The school receives support from the University of Nebraska at Omaha Building Bright Futures attendance and school engagement initiative. The program uses the 40 Developmental Assets that serve as building blocks to help children grow into healthy, caring and responsible adults. One of the 40 assets is a “caring school climate.”

Spring Lake is very supportive of parents. Jimenez knows that she can count on the school to help correct any behavior problems going on at home.

“The kids are always in Mrs. Frank’s office to say hello and get treats,” Jimenez says. “I know if I talk to her about them misbehaving, she’ll talk to them and not reward them for bad behavior.”

ollege is a worry that weighs

heavily on the minds of most parents.

Luckily, there are many wonderful resources that can calm even the most frazzled parent’s nerves and help your student stay on the road to success. Here are a few helpful hints to keep in mind when you are helping your scholar plan for the future:

College is accessible.

Never rule out the possibility of a college education because of finances. There is money out there in the form of grants, scholarships and even student loans. The real question is not, Is there is funding for my student?, but What funding best fits my student’s needs? Filling out the Federal Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible is key. These monies are allocated on a first come, first served basis and the application is available as early as January 1st. This form can be accessed on www.fafsa.edu.gov, or you can contact your student’s guidance counselor.

Start early.

Preparing for the Road to Success:

Helping Your Child Reach Higher Education

It might be surprising to know more parents, families and schools are making decisions about postsecondary education as early as the sixth grade. Encouraging your student to challenge their potential by taking extra classes, advanced placement and honors courses can really aid in the application process when the time comes. Also, keep in mind even though local high schools do not require students to take four years of math and science, those extra core courses will help your child be more successful in a post-secondary setting.

Build that resume!

Schools are looking for well-rounded individuals that will not only do well academically, but will also make an impact on the culture and student life of the campus. Volunteering, extracurricular activities and even a part time job will help your student get noticed and may even open doors to more scholarship opportunities.

Know your student’s counselor.

Make a point to get to know your student’s guidance counselor! They can do much more for your student than help them choose courses. Guidance counselors are trained to provide information about colleges, offer step by step instructions of the application process and can even suggest schools that specialize in the specific areas of study your student is interested in. They can even serve as a school reference in most instances.

We kick off the month by celebrating Read Across America Day on March 2. It’s no coincidence that this day falls on the birthday of Dr. Seuss. While Dr. Seuss would have been 107 years old this year, this celebration of reading began 13 years ago when a task force at the National Education Association decided to have a day specifically dedicated to reading. On this day, events, partnerships and reading resources encourage children and teens to celebrate reading. Fortunately, at OPL, we have fun activities and resources for people of all ages to enjoy reading every day!

Sandhill Crane Migragtion

Discover the Beauty of Central Nebraska

F

or generations, families from across the state and

around the world have been drawn to an amazing scene — hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes converging on the Platte River Valley.

During the annual spring migration, the cranes stop in central Nebraska to rest and recharge en route to their summer breeding grounds in Canada, Alaska and Siberia.







  

 

The cranes, which spend up to a month in the Kearney and Grand Island area, are drawn to the valley’s abundant food and shelter from predators.

Feeding on waste corn found in nearby fields, the cranes will gain up to a pound of weight during their stay in central Nebraska. It’s weight the birds will use to complete the final portion of their northern migration. Without it, the journey would be impossible.

Sandhill cranes have been in existence for more than nine million years, making them one of nature’s oldest living bird species. To this day, crane populations remain abundant and healthy — a testament to the species’ successful adaptation to environmental changes. Also key to the birds’ survival is the success of their annual migration, which is why bird watchers must take particular care not to disrupt the cranes during the critical layover in central Nebraska.

Cranes can’t tolerate human contact, so they shouldn’t be approached.

Disturbances can leave cranes weak or in poor health and can harm their chances for migration success or reproduction once they reach their northern breeding grounds. A vehicle can work well as a makeshift viewing blind, and with a good set of binoculars, viewing cranes from a safe distance is easy.

For families planning a crane viewing trip this spring, NebraskaFlyway.com is a great resource. The site offers crane facts, current events, migration information, and a printable map with dozens of crane viewing sites. The map also includes top regional museums, monuments, and convention and visitors’ bureaus.

You can find information about crane viewing tours, area attractions and lodging at VisitNebraska.gov. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has additional information about safe crane viewing on its website — OutdoorNebraska.org. Most people know that the products we use to clean our homes can be hazardous. Remember these tips to reduce your risk when dealing with common household chemicals and cleaners: • Always read the label before using a product • Keep chemical products in their original bottles or containers • Never mix household products together, mixing bleach and ammonia can result in toxic gases • Turn on the fan and open windows when using chemical products such as household cleaners Prevention

A huge part of baby–and child–proofing your home is keeping poisons away from children. Follow these guidelines to keep young children safe:

Home Poisonings

M

ore than 2 million poisonings are reported each year. Over 90 percent of these occur in the home. The majority of non-fatal poisonings occur in children younger than six years old. Poison Prevention Week, March 20-26, is a time to raise awareness of poisonings and to promote safety.

There are three primary ways to be exposed to poisons: ingestion (swallowing), inhalation (breathing in), and absorption (through skin/tissue contact). Because the potential for poisoning exists in many of the products we have in our homes, even something as simple as finger paint deserves a second look.

Children’s Creative Supplies

Look for the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) certification seal on children’s creative supplies.

Products evaluated through the ACMI Certification Program undergo a rigorous toxicological review that takes the into account: • All three routes of exposure • Use of the product by a small child • Possible adverse interaction with other ingredients • Product size and packaging • Potential acute and chronic harm to any part of the human body • Possible allergic reaction • How a product is commonly used and misused • U.S. national and state art material labeling regulations

For Families of Young Children • Put the poison control number, 1-800-2221222, on or near every home telephone and save it on your cell phone • Keep all drugs and vitamins in medicine cabinets or other childproof cabinets that young children cannot reach • Avoid taking medicine in front of children because they often copy adults • Do not call medicine “candy” • Do not let guests leave drugs (legal or illegal) where children can find them, for example, in a pillbox, purse, backpack, or coat pocket • Identify poisonous plants in your house and yard and place them out of reach of children or remove them

If a poisoning does occur, try to remain calm and follow these steps: • Call 911 if you have a poison emergency and the victim has collapsed or is not breathing. If the victim is awake and alert, dial 1-800-222-1222. Try to have this information ready: - the victim’s age and weight - the container or bottle of the poison if available - the time of the poison exposure - the address where the poisoning occurred • Stay on the phone and follow the instructions from the emergency operator or poison control center.
