Who are the FACES of Omaha?

F

aces of Omaha is an annual sponsored publication that we created in 2016 to introduce the “faces” of local industry leaders and experts.

These profiles span across the community—from movie theater owners to marketing mavens.

What makes Faces of Omaha (now in its fifth edition) so exclusive is that only one person and company per business category is allowed to participate.

In the publishing industry, this sort of publication is known as “native advertising.” Native advertising is a unique form of sponsored content produced by editorial staff in conjunction with advertisers. attoos and piercings are expressions of creativity, and Big Brain owner Joseph “Smitty” Smith is proud of the artistic abilities of the tattoo artists and piercers who’ve helped him establish and grow Big Brain Productions over 20 years.

“We’ve always focused so much on talent in this business, which is essential, and we’ve built our reputation on that,” Smith said. But, he added, successfully managing 200 piercing services a day takes a special kind of “business mind” he’s been lucky to find in head piercer/ shop manager Dave Brown.

“He’s expanded the business exponentially,” Smith said, explaining that Brown has improved inventory management to keep a greater volume of jewelry in stock. Special orders are easier, clients have a better selection of jewelry—especially gold and gemstone pieces—and the increased demand for piercing services is met with effective staffing and shorter wait times.

“It’s well-run, organized, and efficient,” Smith said. “It’s not the sexiest part of the business, but it’s a practical one. And it separates us from our competition.”

Dermatology is a high-demand specialty in this community, but the team still makes a point to get to know each patient personally, said Dr. Blake Helget, because stress and other factors can affect a patient’s skin.

Upon joining the growing practice last summer, Helget became the newest member of the team founded by Dr. Suzanne Braddock (now retired) and led by Dr. Mary Finnegan. The practice sees patients of all ages.

ivorce is never an easy decision. “Most people think about getting a divorce for two years prior to meeting with a lawyer,” noted Tracy Hightower-Henne.

“Every divorce is unique. We talk with clients about the different ways a divorce can happen,” said HightowerHenne, who joined forces with Susan Reff in 2012 to form Hightower Reff Law. In a collaborative divorce, for example, the spouses and attorneys sign a participation agreement. Only about 15 Omaha lawyers, including Hightower-Henne and Reff, are trained in collaborative divorce. Clients are screened to determine whether they’re good candidates for the collaborative model.

hen Kelly Rocha was 22, a friend took her to a custom bra boutique in Austin, Texas. After putting on a bra that matched her body type, Rocha was hooked. “It made a huge difference in what I could wear and how I felt and looked,” she recalled.

Rocha and her husband moved to Omaha in 2006, and over the following 9 years her passion for empowering women led her to opening Truly U in 2018, Omaha’s first and only custom bra boutique.

In addition to being the store’s owner, Rocha is one of four certified fitters at Truly U. Each fitter has undergone months of training and traveled to New York City to complete a course in bra fitting.

“We want to be known for the education and quality products that we provide,” Rocha said. The fitters at Truly U focus on meeting the unique needs of each customer, helping women of all ages and body types. In addition to feeling more confident, customers are elated by the comfort they get from a wellfitting bra.

e’ve had had tremendous growth over the last year,” The Volleyball Academy’s founder Deb Grafentin said. And her team is poised for more growth. The versatile 50,000-square-foot facility boasts eight wood-surface courts that accommodate an impressive schedule of lessons, training programs, and camps, along with youth and adult leagues, competitions and tournaments at all levels from recreational to highly competitive.

More boys are participating in the sport, Grafentin said. She’s putting together a new spring league starting in May for high-school boys and is working with local schools to recruit teams of six or more who will get professional instruction from her staff before their scrimmages.

“It’s a very powerful, athletic, dynamic sport,” she said. “Once they get playing they realize how challenging it is and how fun it is.”

Corporations are also discovering the camaraderie and team building of recreational outings at The Volleyball Academy that can be customized to include not just volleyball but food and entertainment, Grafentin added.

“The whole culture of our facility and our business is community, family, and fun,” she said.
