Experiencing the arts in Omaha may feel the same, yet different. Favorite local bands cautiously perform onstage but some still provide a streamed show. It’s likely that those taking in a museum exhibit may still look over nervously when someone unexpectedly sneezes.

And when Broadway fans see a production at the Orpheum, they will need to make sure their phones are on...at least until performance time.

Promoters, communications and PR directors, and programming vice presidents said 2020 was comparable to a dog year. Rebecca Brown, director of marketing and public relations at Opera Omaha, said last year felt like five years had passed. Jessica Brummer, director of communications at The Durham Museum, said it was almost hard to remember January and February 2020, when they were coming off their strongest Christmas season to date.

And while the first half of 2021’s events calendar looked like 2020, arts planners are mapping out their schedules with gusto.

Brown said Opera Omaha reached out to fellow arts partners about the best ways to reopen as well as listened to patrons’ concerns about safety during the long period leading up to reopening the Orpheum to the public. But she was confident about 2021’s holiday season.

“Our Orpheum Theater series will open [in late] 2021,” Brown said.

In May and June, Opera Omaha continued its Opera To-Go series, which began in 2020 and featured smaller “pop-up” art performances in Omaha neighborhoods. Brown said during their brainstorming sessions, the staff thought of creative ways to deliver live music again but still make the experience safe for people to appropriately socially distance. For a bigger production, Brown said Opera Omaha collaborated with the Omaha Symphony to put on Opera Under the Stars in May and is producing Opera Outdoors in August.

In terms of an indoor experience, The Holland Performing Arts Center and the Orpheum Theater installed hospital-grade HVAC systems, said Andy Cassano, vice president of programming and education at Omaha Performing Arts. Cassano moved from Pennsylvania to Omaha last February to join O-pa.

One month later, everything shut down.

“It was obviously one of the most difficult and challenging times in my entire 17-year career,” Cassano said in a Zoom interview from his family’s home in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Cassano said O-pa has been adjusting their season plans since September 2020. O-pa opened their east lawn location at 12th and Dodge streets in May for outdoor performances, which gave people some much-needed fresh air and entertainment while awaiting large indoor shows.

Cassano said the schedule for the marquee Broadway shows took a while to finalize because of reverberating impacts from last year’s shutdown. He pointed to the traveling Disney musical Frozen. Because the March shutdown happened so quickly, actors, directors, choreographers, and stagehands hurriedly disbanded. In some cases, entire production sets gathered dust for months before they could be picked up and returned to their permanent locations.

As events emerge this summer, some, such as CWS, eagerly opened to capacity while others, including Maha festival, which was announced May 12, offer limited capacity seating.

Many arts organizations used the downtime to enhance the user experience and make things safer. The Durham Museum used part of their downtime to modify their restrooms to be almost entirely touchless, with motionsensor faucets. Plexiglass may be a permanent fixture near the front ticket desk, and contactless tickets will likely overtake paper tickets as the preferred choice of patrons.

The Durham’s popular train cars reopened May 1, the same day people could go back to experiencing the museum without having to go through the socially distanced one-way paths.

Brummer said she most looked forward to the return of in-person events at The Durham.

The museum resumed school field trips in late April, and resumed in-person tours that same month. Brummer said moving these types of events to a virtual setting was one of the biggest changes the museum underwent in 2020. Like Opera Omaha and O-pa, Brummer anticipated this fall as a target date for getting back to normal operations.

Broadway to the Big O T OU R I N G S HOW S TA K E PL A N N I N G

Hamilton, Les Misérables, Lion King, and The Book of Mormon—each of these shows graced Omaha with their presence for weeks at a time, bringing out-of-town theater-lovers to the city and entertaining thousands.

Arranging for these shows is a long process that involves looking at programming, venue availability, and more. At the helm of bringing Broadway shows here is Omaha Performing Arts President Joan Squires.

“Joan is a leader in the industry and key member of the theater community,” said Broadway Across America President Susie Krajsa. “She understands the intricacies of booking a Broadway season, which can be complicated.

and patrons of the Omaha Broadway Series.

O-pa is the local presenter of Broadway shows, and books the tours with BAA, the national presenter of theater tours in almost 50 cities, ranging from Boston to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Squires is on the Broadway League Board of Governors, the board for the national trade association of the Broadway industry that boasts more than 700 members. She is also a Tony Awards voter, which involves visiting New York City to watch shows that are up for Tony Awards. While a dream job for any fan of musical theater, voting on Tonys and being on the board serve higher purposes for Omaha. It elevates recognition of Omaha and builds relationships that ultimately lead to better communication and trust.

Squires realized from the beginning of her tenure in 2002 that Omaha didn’t have a large presence for Broadway, and she has worked tirelessly to bring the city great entertainment.

“When the Holland opened [in 2005] we could balance our presentations,” Squires said.

“We then had the opportunity to bring these large shows.”

The goal is to have a mix of familiar audience favorites with popular shows.

“The public doesn’t realize about the time it takes to get tractor-trailers in,” Squires said.

“How we pack and unpack them. They might not think about extra rehearsals, setting up ticket sales.”

Add to that a pandemic, and the 2020-2021 season brought the term topsy-turvy to a different level.

Restaging Broadway shows is difficult. A show must recapitalize its finances, rehire staff, rework travel arrangements, update sets and costumes, rehearse, and then do technical run-throughs once the show hits its first stop.

However, wanting Fiddler on the Roof and Frozen in the same season and placing Fiddler and Frozen on stage is not simple. O-pa has to find dates that are not only mutually agreeable between the venue and the show, but ones where the show is able to travel in a short time frame, generally less than six hours.

Omaha has been known for its alternative and indie rock music since the mid-1990s.

Its popularity continues to flourish, and has led to many venues opening for area musicians.

Omaha is home to more than a dozen venues showcasing the metro’s vibrant visual arts scene. The variety of galleries in size and style, as well as the featured works— pottery, painting, blown glass, sculpture, prints and photography, mixed media, and more—give locals and visitors many opportunities to experience a rich, diverse display of talent.

Those who lead three of Omaha’s largest visual arts venues are enthusiastic about the year ahead following a difficult 2020.

Promoting new exhibits, expanding arts education and outreach, and encouraging artists’ experimentation are their top goals.

“I’m excited about the summer exhibition—the Art Deco collection—that...will coincide with the 90th anniversary celebration of our building,” said Jack Becker, CEO of Joslyn Art Museum, home to Nebraska’s largest, most diverse fine arts collection (and many would argue, the best in the region) at 22nd and Dodge streets.

“I’m also excited about the Karl Bodmer collection [of paintings] that takes a closer look at his work on Native American tribes from the 1930s,” Becker said. “We work three to four years out, having conversations, our curators and directors planning ahead, to get these exhibits.” Seeing them come to fruition is gratifying, he said.

“I knew nothing about fundraising before I started the company and that’s obviously a critical part of making what we do possible,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see how generous people are and how moved they are by the work that we do that they want to help make it possible for other people to experience dance, too.”

American Art Deco: Designing for the People, 1918–1939 Through Sept. 5, 2021

American Art Deco: Designing for the People, 1918–1939 investigates a dynamic period in American history and culture when the country and its citizens went through political, economic, social, and artistic transformation and revolution. From stylish decorative art objects to products of industrial design, modern American paintings to compelling photographic images, the multimedia works of art in this exhibition reflect both the glamour and optimism of the 1920s and the devastation and escapism of the 1930s.

This exhibition will have a ticket fee. $10 general public adults; $5 college students with ID; free for Joslyn members and youth ages 17 and younger.

Drawing on textile and weaving traditions from across the Americas, Africa, and Europe, Diedrick Brackens creates intricate tapestries that interrogate personal stories and shared cultural experiences.

Formally rooted in postwar American art movements, Brackens’ compositions fuse the language of abstraction with narrativedriven figuration.

Faces from the Interior: The North American Portraits of Karl Bodmer Oct. 2, 2021 - Jan. 2, 2022

Faces from the Interior is the first museum project to focus exclusively on Karl Bodmer’s watercolor portraits of Native Americans.

The exhibition features 64 recently conserved watercolors, drawn entirely from Joslyn’s renowned Maximilian-Bodmer collection.

This includes portraits of individuals from Omaha, Yankton, Lakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Assiniboine, and Blackfoot tribes, among many Native communities encountered by Maximilian and Bodmer during their travels along the Missouri River from Saint Louis to Fort McKenzie, in present-day Montana.

This exhibition will have a ticket fee. $10 general public adults; $5 college students with ID; free for Joslyn members and youth ages 17 and younger.

Goldstein maintains a hybrid practice as a multimedia artist and musician. Exploring the shifting relationship between sound and image, Goldstein considers how sonic and visual experiences overlap and inform one another.
