AT BEST OF OMAHA’S 30 TH ANNIVERSARY

J

ournalists have always found 30 to be a poignant number. We traditionally end articles and/or press releases with -30-. There are a couple of reasons given as to why, but the most common answer is that it originated from telegraphic shorthand, in which the term -30- was used to end a transmission. Regardless of how it started, there have been several references to this term, from subtle to blatant, throughout pop culture.

According to the film database IMDB, the 1950s film Park Row, about the founding of The New York Globe in the late 1800s, ends with the word “thirty” instead of “the end.” There is also a movie titled -30- from 1959 about a Los Angeles newspaper.

The television series Law & Order: Criminal Intent used “30” as the title of an episode in which a reporter is poisoned, and “-30-” is the title of the finale of HBO series The Wire.

Of course, there is also the ultimate fictional journalist, Clark Kent, who often recognized the lack of this journalistic signature on an article as a sign of trouble.

Here at Omaha Publications, 30 is an especially important number this year—it is the 30th anniversary of the Best of Omaha. The traditional anniversary gift for 30 years is pearls, which is why we chose to incorporate them into the design of this book.

There are many interesting facts about pearls. Pearls are the birthstone for June, one of three different birthstones for that month (the others are alexandrite and moonstone).

There are several types of them. South Sea pearls are considered the most valuable, in part because they are the largest pearls, ranging in size from 9 millimeters to 20 millimeters in diameter. Akoya pearls are smaller in diameter, and Tahitian pearls are dark colored as opposed to white or gold.

Pearls were the first organically found jewel to be lab-created. In 1893, a Japanese man named Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in culturing a semi-spherical pearl, and within 10 years was creating perfectly round pearls. The small island where he created these pearls, located off the east coast of Japan, is known as Mikimoto Pearl Island. The creation of these cultured pearls made them an item every woman could afford, thus creating the trend of women wearing long strands of pearls in the early 20th century.

Omaha Publications is about creating the best magazines in order to give our readers the best stories and images. The magazine stories in 1992 included three consistent departments: Calendar of Events, Restaurant Guide, and a column titled “Dear Therapist.” The first two departments can still be found in each regular edition of Omaha Magazine. All the other articles throughout the year were one-time features, from an essay titled “Experiences as a Camp Counselor” to a humor piece titled “Want to Get Rich Quick? Do Something Incredibly Stupid” by Diver Dan Doomey. The latter article was a dry humor piece about dumb things some people have done that have been turned into books or TV movies, written by a comedian and radio-show host on Z-92. His partner in comedy and radio was non other than Otis Twelve, the same radio-show host who now pens the backpage column in Omaha Magazine (including this special edition).

SOME THINGS CHANGE, SOME STAY THE SAME THIS YEAR MARKS THE 30 TH YEAR OF THE BEST OF OMAHA.

Also consistent throughout the 30 (plus) years of this magazine are the profile articles. In 1992, the magazine highlighted Opera Omaha’s artistic director Mary Robert, Aksarben Ball Couturier Denise Ervin, and Omaha Star publisher Mildred Brown. In 2021, we published articles on Opera Omaha and the women leaders of Aksarben. The next edition of B2B Omaha, hitting the streets in December, features an article about Omaha Star Publisher Terri Sanders.

he official ballot was printed on page 38 of the January/February 1992 magazine, and it had to be returned via USPS—the World Wide Web was invented the year prior, on Aug. 6, 1991.

There were no themes and only 56 categories. Those included the stalwart “Best Pizza” and “Best Place to Buy CDs/Tapes.” It’s interesting that the term CDs was listed first, as 1992 was the first year that CDs surpassed tapes as the preferred medium, according to infoplease.com.

Other categories that have gone by the wayside included “Best Weekend Getaway,” “Best Omaha Tradition,” and “Best Place to People Watch.” Interestingly, and wisely, “Best Yogurt” has become “Best Frozen Yogurt.” In the 1980s and early 1990s, frozen yogurt became popular while standard yogurts were known as one of Americans’ most-hated foods.

While these articles have been popular over the past 30 years due to their being Omaha legacies, the magazine has changed in many other ways, as has the city. As Omaha began coming into its own as a draw for the arts, the magazine began including more arts and culture, and dining, departments. While we were creating the Best of Omaha, Omaha itself was becoming known as one of the best cities in America.

In the early 1990s, a few now-household names were starting to make their way in the arts, and in business. It was a sign of things to come. Many of the artistic and cultural items for which Omaha is known—from Saddle Creek Records to Alexander Payne’s movie Election—came to the forefront starting in 1993. Here are a few Omaha artists and what they were doing in 1992.

Although the categories have changed, and certainly expanded, through the years, one thing remains the same— Omahans look to the Best of Omaha to find winners in more than 300 categories.

The band 311 was preparing to move to Los Angeles, and the next year, they began to become well known. Spin Magazine said “In 1992, Martinez—who knew P-Nut from their days at Bryan High—graduated from a collaborator to a full-time member. 311, with its hybrid sound solidified, recorded another EP, Hydroponic.”

“Newcomers use best of Omaha to find where to eat, where to find housing, and more,” said publisher Todd Lemke. “It’s one of the services we can offer as a community magazine.”

Just as the contest has expanded and changed through the years, so too has the magazine. The magazine in 1992 had six editions. In 2014, Omaha Publications split the Best of results into its own magazine, creating a seventh edition, and in 2016, we created our Faces of Omaha as an eighth edition to the magazine.

Oberst was 12 years old in 1992, but he was already proving himself a musical prodigy. According to an interview written by Tim McMahan, “One night in 1992, Ted Stevens (of Mayday and Cursive) invited Oberst onstage to play. Bill Hoover, who was in attendance, invited Oberst to come back to play with him a couple of weeks later. In that short amount of time, Oberst wrote enough songs to fill out the set, establishing himself as an artist.”

Union spent one semester at UNL in 1991 and was in California in 1992. The only credited role she had in 1992, according to IMDB, was as a “Mall Girl” on the popular TV Series Family Matters.

In August 1991, Warren Buffett stepped away from Berkshire Hathaway briefly to become interim chairman of Salomon Inc. He returned to Berkshire in June 1992. That year, in his annual letter to shareholders, Buffett declared that “newspaper, television, and magazine properties were losing their status as profit-spewing franchises.”

his was a big year in news. Due to a 1991 invention known as the internet (and an email), a quick search found the hot headlines of that year. Readers older than 30 may remember the following events.

Gambling was a hot topic for voters, who passed a constitutional amendments that permitted creation of a state lottery. That year, in Nebraska, 106 towns and counties either conducted keno lotteries or have voter approval to start keno. Omaha added 44 satellite keno outlets across the city, and citywide keno wagers grew from $511,000 a week to $860,000 a week. Two Native American casinos in western Iowa opened that year.

Democratic nominee Bill Clinton won his first term in the White House, beating Republican President George H.W. Bush and independent nominee Ross Perot. Locally, Nebraskans were hopeful for Sen. Bob Kerrey, who tried to run in a fivemonth bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Huskers went 9-3 in the 1992 football season, aided by head coach Tom Osborne. The team included freshman quarterback Tommy Frazier and junior linebacker Trev Alberts, now the current UNL athletic director. They beat rival Colorado 52 to 7 and Kansas 49-7 in nationally televised games and traveled to Florida to play in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1993.

Omaha was in the running for a large auto-manufacturing contract. Spartanburg, S.C., and Omaha were considered for the site of BMW’s planned auto-assembly plant. Business and government leaders in both cities worked hard bidding for the plant. Superlatives CAN BE TRICKY

B

y definition, there can only be one “best,” but thank goodness there can be so many categories. That’s how there are, in the final analysis, so many “bests.”

The “best person you ever met” in your life is part of the same life that contains the “best friend you ever had” and they could be two completely different people. That life could also include the “best bridge partner,” “the best lefthanded dental hygienist,” “the best golf companion who never notices your subtle kick out from behind the tree,” “the best second husband/wife,” “the best mostly honest critic,” “the best truck driver who ever pulled the air horn for your kids while you were on an endless road trip to Oklahoma in a Dodge Duster without A/C,” “the best friend when you really needed a best friend and it was 3 a.m.,” “the best wild animal trainer,” “the best little smile,” “the best haunted house corpse actor,” “the best purveyor of dad jokes,” “the best tire changer who somehow never seems to end up with filthy knees,” “the best Summertime Sunday afternoon lover,” “the best flashlight holder,” “the best at giving you that look,” “the best pancake flipper,” “the best liar about why kangaroos have pouches,” “the best master of bad puns,” “the best tree hugger,” “the best me hugger,” “the best ambidextrous short order cook,” “the best boss who never acted like a boss,” “the best delinquent dog trainer,” “the best birthday cake candle blower outer,” “the best clutch hitter in Cubs history,” or “the best waiter who ever waited…” and those could all be different people…unless you are incredibly lucky and have all of those people rolled into one. In which case, I really want to read your biography.

You get the idea.

I think that in any life the goal is to find, bump into, discover, happen upon, or stumble into as many “bests” as you can and that, in the final analysis, always means the “best people.” Because the “best things” are just things and they can’t experience you back, and besides, they wouldn’t be the “best thing” without a “best person” behind them. It’s all about the sharing—all about the shared moments. Even in our alone time, those “best people” are with us making it possible for us to “be at our own best.” In our memories, they become part of us. That all adds up to the “best days” of our lives. It’s the ultimate oxymoron.

Superlatives are as common as every tick of the clock. We just have to be paying close attention. The trick is to not get caught up in the “worsts” that pop up from time to time between the ticks and the tocks. Most of them are mirages anyway.
