WELCOME TO OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY SHOW, WRAPPED IN RAINBOW!

This is the first show of our 39th Season and the first time we have donned our Santa hats for the magnificent Holland Performing Arts Center. We are so excited to be on this beautiful stage and incredibly grateful that you have chosen to include this concert in your own busy schedule.

Our holiday concerts are always joyful celebrations of many traditions. We hope that whatever yours are, you will find a message in our music that reminds you of times you felt at home, unconditionally loved, and at peace. We need these messages more than ever as we gather in the shadow of another violent attack on the

LGBTQ+ community at The Q Nightclub in Colorado Springs. That event, coupled with the continued onslaught of discriminatory laws and harmful rhetoric at local, state, and national levels, reminds us that our mission of creating exceptional music to support diversity, inspire change, and empower communities is still relevant, still needed, and still worth fighting for. Finding joy amidst our sadness is truly an act of courageous resistance, and I am grateful and proud of each of the 100+ singers who will stand before you tonight to share their most authentic and beautiful selves through music.

In tonight’s program we have wrapped up our usual messages of inclusion, love, and belonging alongside other, more solemn themes. There will be moments of quiet reflection, as captured in Jacob Narverud’s Season of Light, as well as boisterous and gleeful bursts of sound, as found in Burt Bacharach’s Turkey Lurkey Time. And

as usual, we have invited some musical friends to join us in the celebration! We are thrilled that the Mahr String Quartet, a local and award-winning ensemble, is making its first appearance with RCMC, and grateful that our much beloved River City Instrumental Combo is also here. Together, we offer up our musical gifts, our joy, and our heartfelt hope that you will find a bit of peace and warmth in our company.

If you enjoy this evening’s performance, we heartily encourage you to come back to the Holland Performing Arts Center on June 10th, 2023, for Our Own Kind of Music – A 70’s Celebration. We will be performing hits from the iconic artists of the 70’s whose timeless anthems became a soundtrack for social justice movements that continue to this day. And because the beat does go on, plan on staying for a post-concert disco and costume party in the First National Lobby here at the Holland. Visit rcmc. org for more information and a link to tickets already on sale.

As we approach our 40th birthday during the 23/24 Season, we owe you, our friends and family members, and our donors and sponsors, a huge measure of gratitude. You keep showing up for us, year after year, giving us a reason to keep pursuing our mission and striving for a more inclusive community. We are all in this together and hope you know that no matter what your talents are, there is a spot for you in our organization; whether as a singer, volunteer, organizer, donor, or patron, all are welcome, just hit the “Contact” button on our website. You won’t regret becoming a part of the River City Mixed Chorus family—I know I haven’t.

FROM
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR | DR. A BARRON BRELAND

When I took my seat in the Holland Performing Arts Center last June, excited to hear RCMC’s Love Out Loud concert, I had no idea that their next concert program would feature a letter from me! I had been a loyal fan and donor for several years and so I was familiar with the ways the Chorus could delight and entertain an audience. However, nothing had prepared me for the pure joy I would experience in becoming a member of the Board of Directors and

then the Board Chair. I am honored to serve such a hardworking, dedicated, and passionate group of people who are deeply committed to bringing RCMC’s mission to life. I am also incredibly grateful for the singing members of the Chorus who will soon bravely step out onto the magnificent Holland stage – undoubtedly the best stage for live music in the Greater Omaha Area. They are the true heroes tonight and the heart and soul of this amazing organization. I am very inspired by and proud of the mission and management of RCMC and all who support this important work. Our staff and volunteer board members are both bold and prudent. They are thoughtful stewards of a legacy that spans nearly four decades across

difficult terrain for the LGBTQ+ community. We are most certainly in a better time now, and yet, there is still work to do. We are grateful for the corporate sponsors and individual donors who have financially supported RCMC, especially during the past several years. We are indebted to the friends and family members who continue to prioritize RCMC’s concerts on their busy calendars and reward the Chorus’ hard work with applause. Your collective commitment to building a more inclusive Omaha has been a critical factor in our longevity and success. Your willingness to stand with us and proudly endorse this organization means we can continue going about the business of creating exceptional musical experiences to

support diversity, inspire change, and empower communities. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and work alongside you!

May tonight’s show, Wrapped in Rainbow, bestow upon you the gifts of joy and peace. May the warmth you feel in our company comfort you during these dark December days and may the beauty of RCMC’s music remind you that here, everyone is welcome!

From all of us on stage, welcome to Wrapped in Rainbow, the first concert of our 39th season! As you are taking your seats, we are calming our nerves and arranging our scarves and ties so that when we walk onto the wonderful Holland Performing Arts Center

stage, you will both hear and see the excitement and dedication we are bringing to this program!

We will be offering up music that hails from many different holiday traditions, from toe tapping old standbys to heartwarming new favorites, all with the hope that these musical gifts will bring you joy, not just in this moment but also as you move into this holiday season.

Every one of us onstage this evening is a volunteer who has been practicing jingle bells and snowstudded earworms since

August when most folks barely had December on their radar. It takes a special talent to spend countless hours during sunny, 80-degree days rehearsing and memorizing songs about Jack Frost and Turkey-lurkeys. But now here we are, ready to share our rainbow-colored, Santa-hatted razzle dazzle! We are truly grateful that you have chosen to be here with us tonight. Your support, both through your applause and your donations, allows us to continue doing what we love – singing and connecting and gathering

to make sure that Omaha is an inclusive place to live and work and thrive.

On behalf of the entire Chorus, welcome, thank you, and enjoy the show!

CONCERT

With degrees in Music Theory and Choral Conducting from the University of Georgia and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Dr. A. Barron Breland has emerged as a conductor set apart from others by his eclectic skills equipped to perform music from masterworks of the Baroque and Classical eras to great contemporary works of art, including repertoire in various popular styles. Recent choral performances conducted include Considering Matthew Shepard, the Mozart C-minor Mass, Mozart Requiem, and Beethoven Mass in C; critics have praised the warmth and communicative power of his performances and choruses.

Breland is in demand throughout the Midwest as a conductor, chorusmaster, clinician, and adjudicator, and he has prepared choruses for Grammy and Tony-winning artists such as Laura Benanti, John Mellencamp, Norm Lewis, Brian d’Arcy James, and conductors Dale Warland and Ted Sperling. Breland has also served as chorusmaster and prepared numerous works for the Omaha Symphony, including Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Carmina Burana, Elijah, Messiah, and many others.

Currently, he is the Vice Provost for Faculty & Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where previously he was Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Fine & Performing Arts. He conducted their premiere ensemble, the Creighton University Chamber Choir, and taught classes in music theory, history, and conducting.

Singing from the age of 6, Breland’s first exposure to professional choral music was in 1990 as a member of the Atlanta Boy Choir, where he performed with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as well as in tours and festivals throughout Europe.

Since 2011, he has been the Artistic Director of the River City Mixed Chorus, and in his 12-year tenure with the organization the ensemble has grown to over 120 active singing members, has headlined conferences, performed alongside Grammy-winning Conspirare, and has taken the stages of historic and iconic venues around the region.

He is also the Music Director of Résonance, a semi-professional chorus whose debut album Pilgrimage was released in July 2020 on the MSR Classics label. All the ensembles under Breland’s leadership perform regularly with the Omaha Symphony, and all have performed at state and regional ACDA and NMEA conferences.

Adam Witte has never been one to shy away from a music genre or musical instrument. His tastes, talent, and curiosity run far and wide, taking him on adventures across Europe playing euphonium solos with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Symphonic Wind Ensemble, guiding him to sing acapella vocal jazz with Nexus, and prompting him to play keyboards with local band The Confidentials. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in euphonium from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where he is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music degree in Conducting.

Though his musical accomplishments are long and varied, vocal music has played a big role in Adam’s journey. He currently uses these skills to hone the talents of others in his role as Adjunct Instructor at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he directs both the Creighton University Chamber Choir and the University Chorus. In addition, he has always been involved in church music, from singing in the choir to playing piano and handbells, and now serves as the Choir Director at Countryside Community Church in Omaha, Nebraska, the Christian partner of the Tri-Faith Initiative. It seems fitting that Adam became a singing member of River City Mixed Chorus only to be named Assistant Artistic Director a short year later. In addition to his work with Creighton University and RCMC, Adam is also a singing member of the Omaha vocal ensemble Resonance.

Keith Hart was a public school music teacher in a previous life. As much as he loved the job and working with kids, he felt an undeniable tug from the theater world. He set his sights on a graduate degree in theatre, and worked on productions at various theaters in Kansas City.

With production experience under his belt, Keith moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he has worked as a pianist, musical director, and scenic designer for numerous the atrical productions. He also holds down a day job as Manager of Programs at Joslyn Castle.

The piano has been a constant in Keith’s life. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in music education with an emphasis in piano from Northwest Missouri State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. His love of accompanying and playing with a wide range of soloists, ensembles, and choirs led him to River City Mixed Chorus in 2015, joining the organization as Collaborative Pianist.

Patrick Roddy joined Creighton University’s dance faculty in 1993 and is currently Director of the Dance Program. He has a well-developed connection to the Omaha dance and theatre communities as well; having performed on, or choreographed for, nearly every Omaha stage over the past half century. From 1978-1992, he worked and studied professionally in New York and Los Angeles.

In 2022, the Mahr String Quartet was voted “Best of Music” by Nebraska Wedding Magazine and will have played 70 events. Founding members met at UNO and the group truly loves both making music and doing life together. As individuals, they can be found performing with the Omaha, Lincoln and Des Moines Symphonies, as well as with Broadway, Mannheim Steamroller and other national touring artists.

ABOUT

1984

OMAHA TO DES MOINES AND BACK AGAIN.

Approximately 260 miles on an unexceptional stretch of I-80 that left plenty of time for life-altering discussions. Six friends went to see the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus’ one-night-only performance in Des Moines. The year was 1984 — the same year that GALA Choruses, the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, was founded. That night changed everything.

On the drive home, the friends discussed the need to spread the same messages of love, unity, inclusion, acceptance, and empowerment within their own community. They organized The Mid City Chorus with three other friends, nine men and one woman, and had their first performance at a variety show for the Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha. The reception was overwhelming. Their second performance was a Christmas concert at The Max. Around that time, the founding members officially changed the name of the Chorus to River City Mixed Chorus (RCMC) and solidified their place in GALA.

Since our humble beginnings, we’ve grown to more than 130 singing members, with hundreds of performances and sold-out holiday shows. We’re determined to make you laugh, make you think, and, more importantly, give you a sense of belonging.

HOW GAY CHORUSES CAME TO BE

There are times when unimaginable acts of tragedy unleash our inner courage and fuel us to act. This was such a time.

In the fall of 1978, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician in American history, and Mayor George Moscone were heartlessly assassinated in San Francisco City Hall. The event sent shockwaves through the gay and lesbian community. That evening, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus gathered on the steps of City Hall and held it’s very first public performance. At the time, the word “gay” in a chorus name was unheard of.

Three years later, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus toured the US, forever changing the lives of millions of people and inspiring the formation of many new gay and lesbian choruses.

By 1984, fourteen of those choruses bonded together to found what is now the largest gay and lesbian choral organization in the world —the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses). GALA Choruses has since grown to more than 10,000 singers from more than 190 choruses, all sharing in the common mission of empowering LGBTQ+ Choruses as they change the world through song.

It was because of that fateful day and heartbreaking tragedy that many choruses were able to find their voices.
