social narrative

I am going to the Holland Center for a fashion show and Silent Disco. When I’m walking inside, there may be traffic from the nearby street, which may be loud. I can wear headphones or earplugs to help with the noise.

I can park in a nearby parking garage or use the street parking around the building and walk up to the main entrance. There may be other people arriving at the same time as I do, who are excited about the event.

When I arrive, I will see a welcome desk to check in at and can ask the staff questions about the event or check out a sensory kit to use for the night.

I know if I requested a sighted guide, ASL or another access resource for the event I can ask the staff at this table for assistance.

The fashion show will take place in front of a large set of stairs, and the sound may echo in the lobby. The models will move on a runway in front of me. I can sit in chairs on either side of the runway or stand behind the chairs and watch.

When the fashion show is over, we can move into a second space for the silent disco. There will be 3 DJ’s playing music that will only be heard through headphones. There may be colorful lights moving in the space and I know I am welcome to move and dance how I want to the music.

I can pick up a pair of headphones and choose which DJ I want to listen to. I can ask staff for help getting headphones and changing the channel to a different DJ.

There may be mannequins dressed in some of the fashion by the designers. We may be able to gently touch and interact with these designs.

There will be some people testing out a jacket called a SoundShirtTM. This shirt has parts built into it that vibrate and move in response to music. There will be a sign-up list that I can add my name to, if I want to try out the jacket. I know if I try it on, I need to be gentle with the fabric, so others can enjoy it later.

I know if I become overstimulated, I can go out to the lobby or ask for directions to a quiet space.

If I need access to a resource not listed in this sensory guide, I can contact ticketomaha@o-pa.org and they will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodation. If it is within the 2 weeks of the event, I can still request a specific service but there is no guarantee they will be able to provide it.
