WELCOME TO DISNEYPRIDEINCONCERT!

We are thrilled to have you with us for this joyful celebration of music, magic, and pride, brought to life through the incredible partnership between the River City Mixed Chorus— Nebraska’s oldest and largest LGBTQ+ chorus—and your Omaha Symphony.

A new live music concept developed by Disney, tonight’s performance is more than a concert–it’s a moment of shared joy, reflection, and unity. Through beloved Disney melodies and powerful storytelling, we are reminded of the courage it takes to be our true selves, the strength found in chosen families, and the beauty in affirming and celebrating our differences.

This collaboration is deeply meaningful. By bringing together the River City Mixed Chorus— Nebraska’s oldest LGBTQ+

chorus that proudly represents the community—and the Omaha Symphony, whose Forte initiative is designed to amplify the strengths of partner organizations, nurture connections, and reflect and uplift the community, we are showing what’s possible when artistry and inclusion walk hand-in-hand. Together, we are able to lift up and honor the voices and stories of the LGBTQ+ community, with a little extra Disney magic sprinkled in.

We believe music has the power to bring people together and to remind us of our shared humanity–just as Disney has for more than 100 years. Every Disney story inspires audiences to fight for what they believe in, stand up for the people you love, and create the world you

want to live in–no matter how insurmountable the obstacles may seem.

As you experience this concert, we invite you to reflect on the importance of celebrating all families—no matter what they look like—and supporting a world where every person can live openly, authentically, and without fear.

Thank you for being here tonight–your presence matters. And your support—whether through applause, advocacy, or allyship—helps lift up not only the performers on stage, but the broader vision of a diverse, welcoming, and vibrant community.

DR. A. BARRON BRELAND

WELCOME TO TONIGHT'S CONCERT, DISNEYPRIDE INCONCERT, FEATURING RCMC AND YOUR OMAHA SYMPHONY!

With this blockbuster collaboration, the River City Mixed Chorus is ecstatic to share the gorgeous Holland stage with your Omaha Symphony and grateful that you have chosen to spend your evening with us. RCMC’s 2024-2025 Season has been all about pride – the pride we take in who we are and what we stand for that shines like a beacon of hope through the darkest of times; the pride we take in our small group of brave original members that started RCMC in 1984, determined to create music that matters; the pride we take in our community that boldly nurtures a vision of inclusion and equity that inspires us to gather on this stage, proudly standing for many and singing as one; and the pride we take in our allies of the movement.

Tonight’s enchanted event is a spectacular, new concert that celebrates LGBTQ+ life, love, family, and pride through the combination of timeless songs from the Disney songbook, curated video clips from the Disney vault, and the personal life experiences of RCMC members. Featuring sparkling new arrangements, Disney PRIDE in Concert draws musical inspiration from iconic Disney films including The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Mary Poppins to modern classics such as Coco, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph and the magical music of Disney Parks, all interwoven with universal storytelling themes stemming from the power of the diverse chorus community.

While tonight’s collaboration between the River City Mixed Chorus and the Omaha Symphony feels new in its epic proportions, the organizations have other moments of entwined history. RCMC’s second artistic director and one of the founding members, John Ziegler, was the principal clarinetist of the Omaha Symphony. And over the years since, many musicians have participated in both organizations or have been featured on RCMC concerts. In 2017, I had the wonderful opportunity to prepare RCMC for the Omaha

Symphony’s “The Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein,” joined by members of the Omaha Symphonic Chorus. I will always remember not only the success of that concert, but also the joyful mirth of a chorus half-stocked with gay men belting out “There Is Nothing Like a Dame” at the top of their lungs! I look forward to the continued success of both of these incredible organizations, and I am so grateful for the partnerships that have brought tonight’s fantastical event to life.

What Disney PRIDE in Concert is about for me – and what 41 years of RCMC performances are about for me – is not only the pride that fuels these artists in their crafts, but also the pride in the inevitability that the LGBTQ+ community, through its ups and its downs, through its perseverance, its resilience, and its hope, is a community of people who are unbreakable. I hope tonight’s journey through these Disney musical memories serves as a point of connection for you to your own power and pride and a reminder of the precious gift of family and love. And may this collaboration remind you that you are not alone on this journey toward a better world. Thank you for being here – enjoy the show!

DR. A. BARRON BRELAND

RCMC ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR

With degrees in Music Theory and Choral Conducting from the University of Georgia and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Dr. A. Barron Breland has emerged as a conductor set apart from others by his eclectic skills equipped to perform all types of music, from masterworks of the Baroque and Classical eras to great contemporary works of art, including repertoire in various popular styles. Recent choral performances conducted include Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Hagenberg's Illuminare, Considering Matthew Shepard, the Mozart C-minor Mass, Mozart Requiem, and Beethoven Mass in C; critics have praised the warmth and communicative power of his performances and choruses.

Breland is in demand as a conductor, chorusmaster, clinician, and adjudicator, and he has prepared choruses for Grammy and Tony-winning artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Laura Benanti, John Mellencamp, Norm Lewis, Brian d’Arcy James, and conductors Dale Warland and Ted Sperling. Breland has also served as chorusmaster and prepared numerous works for the Omaha Symphony, including Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Carmina Burana, Elijah, Messiah, and many others.

Currently, he is the Vice Provost for Faculty & Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where previously he was Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Fine & Performing Arts. Singing from the age of 6, Breland’s first exposure to professional choral music was in 1990 as a member of the Atlanta Boy Choir, where he performed with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as well as in tours and festivals throughout Europe.

Since 2011, he has been the Artistic Director of the River City Mixed Chorus, and in his 15-year tenure with the organization the ensemble has grown to over 170 active singing members, has headlined conferences, performed alongside Grammy-winning Conspirare, and has taken the stages of historic and iconic venues around the region. He is also the Principal Guest Conductor of Résonance, a semi-professional chorus whose debut album Pilgrimage was released in July 2020 on the MSR Classics label. All the ensembles under Breland’s leadership perform regularly with the Omaha Symphony, and all have performed at state and regional ACDA and NMEA conferences.

MARK KURTZ

Mark Kurtz is an award-winning composer, pianist, organist, and music director. Originally from North Dakota, he has lived and worked in Omaha since 2000. He has become known for being adept in an unusually broad spectrum of genres, including both art music and popular music. Recently, “Just Ask!”, a multicultural children’s musical written in collaboration with Fran Sillau and Sonia Sotomayor (based on her #1 New York Times best-selling book) premiered at the Coterie Theater in Kansas City, Missouri, and was featured at the Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) USA national festival in Bethesda, Maryland.

Besides being the music director at First United Methodist Church (Omaha), Associate Director and Collaborative Pianist for Résonance (a professional choral ensemble), and Organ Instructor at the University of Nebraska (Omaha), he has performed locally with organizations such as the Omaha Symphony, Opera Omaha, and The Omaha Chamber Music Society; he has also performed at regional, national, and international festivals, including the national convention of the American Guild of Organists in 2018 and the international GALA choral festival in 2008. He frequently receives commissions for new work, from organizations such as the Institute for Holocaust Education (2021), Résonance (2020, 2016), Gallup (2019, 2018, 2017, 2016), the Willa Cather Foundation (2017), the Anti Defamation League (2012), Why Arts (2011), and the River City Mixed Chorus (2014 and 2008), as well as many churches and individuals, for example, poet Fred Zydek (2013) and Omaha Symphony members Craig and Mary Bircher (2012). He has received numerous scholastic, performance, and composition awards, most recently from the American Guild of Organists (2018 and 2011) and Omaha Entertainment and Arts (2011).

The River City Mixed Chorus Endowment Fund was established by the Board of Directors in 2015. Administered by the Omaha Community Foundation, the Endowment Fund is a resource that will help ensure the long-term financial health of the Chorus. The Fund is set up so that the principal is not used, but proceeds from the principal will help fund the annual budget. Contributions from July 1, 2015 – May 25, 2025
