letter from the chair

It was like a homecoming to return to the Orpheum Theater and Holland Center to attend touring Broadway shows, music performances, and so much more after these past few years. Like all of you, my family and I were delighted to sit in the audience again and experience incredible shows like HAMILTON, Boz Scaggs and many more.

The time away during the COVID-19 pandemic only reinforced how vital an organization like Omaha Performing Arts is. The performing arts bring us together, and O-pa is a national leader in what arts organizations can and should do for a community. We are committed to making the arts accessible to everyone and to bringing a diverse range of events that will offer every person, of every background, an unforgettable experience. We continue to develop the next generation through education programs and create new ways to connect with the arts and each other through community engagement initiatives.

O-pa has a significant annual economic impact that will increase as we transform downtown Omaha with the new addition of Steelhouse Omaha and the future Center for Arts Engagement. People want to live and work where there are exciting things to do and discover and that’s exactly what O-pa provides.

It’s been a wonderful year and I’m looking forward to what’s next!

IT’S AN INSPIRING

letter from the president

The 21/22 Season was a celebration of resilience. As we emerged from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and navigated how to safely reopen our doors, we were thrilled to return to full operations. Most importantly, our artists returned, and you were there to welcome them. Thank you to everyone who made it possible: our performers, our community partners, our Board of Directors, our staff and volunteers, our donors, and everyone who supports what we bring to our stages and to the community. With our commitment to inclusivity, we are here for all and celebrate being together for the experience of live performances. We appreciate your support and are also grateful to have received critical special funding from the CARES Act, American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant.

We now look forward to a full calendar of world-class performances and to creating even more extraordinary experiences for Omaha and people across Nebraska. Steelhouse Omaha, our new live music venue, will open May 12, 2023. And after that milestone, our campus will continue to expand as we grow to accommodate the wider reach of our education and engagement programs.

It’s an inspiring future that we’re building together. Thank you for being a part of the journey.

With gratitude,

Remembering Founder Walter Scott, Jr.

Extraordinary leader, philanthropist and community leader Walter Scott, Jr. passed away on September 25, 2021. A founding member of the Omaha Performing Arts Board of Directors, Walter — along with the late Dick Holland and Chair Emeritus John Gottschalk, led the formation of our organization and the design and construction of the Holland Performing Arts Center and renovation of the Orpheum Theater through his leadership of Heritage Services. As an O-pa board member for over 20 years, Walter provided vision, insight and guidance that elevated our organization and helped transform the community.

Part of O-pa’s IDEA efforts include Voices AMPLIFIED!, a thematic series elevating artists from diverse cultures and creating opportunities for reflection and connection.

The 21/22 Season amplified Black and Latino voices with free community events including a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, a Hip Hop panel discussion, and anti-racism workshops with the band Las Cafeteras.

The series finale Omaha’s Forgotten Century was a portrait of Afro-Latino heritage in Omaha created by a team of community members and produced by O-pa.
