from the president Dear friends of Omaha Performing Arts, We’re so happy to welcome you back to live theater! Nothing compares to the sheer joy and excitement of a live performance, and what better way to return to the stage than with the beloved Broadway classic CATS? If you’ve seen this show before, you may notice some changes. There’s new choreography, new direction – and a striking, fresh new look. Yet you’ll still experience those magical “memories,” that changed musical theater forever. It’s a great time to fall in love with CATS all over again, and O-pa is elated to welcome the cast and company to the Orpheum! I first saw CATS on Broadway soon after it debuted in 1982 and I memorized the entire cast recording and the T.S. Eliot poems. Over the years, countless fans from 30 countries have enjoyed CATS in 15 different languages since it first debuted in London in 1981 -- exactly 40 years ago. This will be its seventh visit to Omaha, and you are in for a special treat. This production opens one of our very best Broadway seasons ever. In just a few weeks, we will welcome HAMILTON, followed by DEAR EVAN HANSEN, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, MEAN GIRLS, HADESTOWN, WICKED and ANASTASIA. We have much to celebrate as these incredible shows bring us together – finally - to experience the magic of live performances. Welcome back!

projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018. THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT (Poet & Lyricist) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. He was educated at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris and Merton College, Oxford. He settled in England in 1915 and taught briefly at two schools before joining Lloyds Bank in the city of London. His first volume of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917. The Waste Land, his most famous work, was first published in 1922. In 1925 he left the bank to become a director of the publishing house of Faber. There have been several individual and collected editions of his poetry, as well as volumes of his literary and social criticism; he also wrote a number of verse plays, including Murder in the Cathedral, which was commissioned for the Canterbury Festival of 1935. T.S. Eliot had a great affection for cats, and “Possum” was his alias among his friends. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats appeared in October 1939 and was the basis for CATS. He received many honors and distinctions, among them the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Eliot died in January 1965 and was posthumously awarded the 1983 Tony Award for the book of CATS.

From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968) to Cinderella (2021) his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the covid pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, Catsand Phantom of the Opera he equalled Rodgers and Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete re-modelling and re-seating of the Gillian Lynne. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts.
