2016/2017 COMMUNITY REPORT
A note from the president As we head into a season of celebration at Omaha Performing Arts, we look back on a year of achievement. We welcomed incredible artists who moved and inspired us. The season showcased the breadth of what we bring to Omaha! We also witnessed incredible growth in our Education and Community Engagement programs. This was especially evident on the many days I navigated through a sea of students as I arrived at work. Their looks of excitement often reminded me of our mission and why we do what we do! This year, we exceeded our goal and reached more than 42,000 students and adults through our programs. We expanded our offerings with WeBop, a jazz education program for ages 2-5, and hosted three successful artist residencies with Basetrack LIVE, Carolyn Dorfman Dance and the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA – all of which reached new and diverse audiences in our community. I’m grateful to our donors, arts partners, resident companies, the community, our board of directors, staff and volunteers for another successful season at Omaha Performing Arts. A note from the chair At Omaha Performing Arts, we are building a premier arts institution for our community. In just 12 short years, we’ve climbed the worldwide venue rankings, welcomed more than 3.7 million people to our performance halls and reached more than 260,000 students through Education and Community Engagement activities. On behalf of the board, thank you to everyone who has attended our events, performed here, volunteered, donated and worked to contribute to our achievements. We won’t stop here. During the 2017/2018 Season, we’re celebrating the Orpheum Theater’s 90th anniversary. We’ll also continue to grow our programs statewide and bring top entertainment to Omaha including Broadway’s HAMILTON in 2018/2019. EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS Five Omaha elementary schools produced and performed a Disney KIDS musical through our new free program for grades 3-6. At the end of the school year, more than 300 students performed numbers from their shows at the Holland Center. Participating schools: • Howard Kennedy Elementary, Wilson Focus School, Crestridge Magnet Elementary, Harrison Elementary and Liberty Elementary.
An increase in student confidence and self-discipline is evident in the students who are taking part in (Disney Musicals in Schools). The life skills being passed on to our Disney performers are invaluable. - Sally Dunn, teacher at Howard Kennedy Elementary
MUSICAL EXPLORERS Participation doubled in the second year of our K-2 program where more than 1,800 students learned about different music styles. The program featured three local artists, each representing a different style: • Billy McGuigan, rock and roll • Jill Anderson, Irish music • Danielle Cleveland and Ananias “Markey” Montague, African American gospel music and spirituals

NEBRASKA HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE AWARDS Launched in 2013 with just 22 schools, the program reached a record number of 60 schools and 6,000 students this year through Broadway classes, in-school workshops and adjudication of school musicals and plays. The program will go statewide in 2017/2018.

50,000 people attended Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing, our free outdoor concert series.
ARTIST RESIDENCIES Basetrack LIVE Performers from the show taught workshops at Bellevue University and University of Nebraska at Omaha for community members, military and veterans. Carolyn Dorfman Dance Choreographer Carolyn Dorfman and artists from the company led a class and workshops for the community at the Jewish Community Center, Intercultural Senior Center, Beth El Synagogue and area schools. Gay Men’s Chorus of LA More than 850 people participated in “it gets better” anti-bullying workshops. The choir traveled to seven Omaha high schools to perform and share their experiences.

ARTS ACCESS EXPANDS TO 72 GROUPS Through our Arts Access program, we offer free and reduced-price tickets to organizations serving populations who lack access to the arts.
Arts Access has given us this wonderful opportunity to attend shows that our clients really enjoy! Attending these shows help our clients get out in the community, make new friends and experience and learn new things. - Crossroads of Western Iowa

WEBOP® This season, we launched our new eight-week jazz education program for children 2-5 and their parents or guardians. We also offered free off-site classes in partnership with 75 North and Howard Kennedy Elementary School.
My grandson loved WeBop® and the program brought forth in him an interest in music beyond my expectations. It was also very special for the two of us to share this experience together. - Mary Elofson
BEAUTIFUL SONGWRITING COMPETITION inspired by Broadway’s BEAUTIFUL – The Carole King Musical Forty-three community members ages 13-71 entered the competition. The winners from each age division recorded music videos with actors from the Broadway tour of BEAUTIFUL – The Carole King Musical. HEROES’ NIGHT AT WHITE CHRISTMAS We offered complimentary tickets for more than 200 community members from Blue Star Families, Gold Star Families and TAPS, organizations that support military members and their families. We recognized active military and veterans at the beginning of the show.
