HFROM THE EDITOR

ello, everyone! It is my joy to share with you this season’s Omaha Fashion Magazine. The magazine, as you can imagine, is quite the publication to put together! With content coming from all members of the Omaha Fashion Week team- photography, interviews and models galore- it is a tremendous undertaking to curate everything into one final 52 page publication. However, somewhere, through the hundreds of emails, bustling teamwork, and office commotion, the seamlessly bound glossy magazine always makes its way to your hands, playing an integral part of tying together every end of Omaha Fashion Week.

From an outside perspective, the magazine is only one small part of the well-oiled, magic making machine that is the Omaha Fashion Week team. Taking a step back, there are hundreds of individuals making Omaha Fashion Week possible, from models and designers, to emcees and caterers, it truly takes a village- well more like a third of Omaha. Although I have been on many teams throughout my experiences and college career, I have never seen a team quite like the Omaha Fashion Week family. The reason I think this team is so successful in what they do and the product that is created, is because of the intentions and goals emitted from every member. There is no selfishness, no divisiveness, but rather only the purest intentions. Everyone has the same goal in mind: to create a positive and professional space for designers and stylists in the Omaha community to grow and showcase their work. The best showcase of this attitude is a new program for stylists being implemented (see Beauty Alliance pg. 13) that will create an opportunity for student talent to network and be mentored by professionals, while also having their work exhibited in the show. Does it get any more impressive than that?

In my Q&A with Keith Rodger, (see pg. 15) I asked him what makes Omaha Fashion Week so special, to which he replied, “The team behind the entire operation all shares a common goal to showcase our city to the world. The key to changing the game is to have players who are willing to build something from nothing and bend the rules of the industry they live in. Can’t stop, won’t stop- I respect that.”

This quote completely and wholly captures the aura of the team behind Omaha Fashion Week. While you may see gorgeous designs coming down the runway and a perfectly glossy magazine page running though your fingers, there is much more to the story and many more players in the game. I am so grateful to have had the privilege to experience the more chaotic editorial side to Omaha Fashion Week, but also witness the magic of the insanely passionate community that is behind it.

Program Brings New opportunities for student and professional stylists

Omaha Fashion Week is shaking things up with a brand new program debuting this season. The Omaha Fashion Week Beauty Alliance is a program that pairs up Omaha’s best professional stylists with

budding student talent who will work together to achieve each designer’s vision on the runway. The total program will pair 42 students and 42 professionals, making this the largest backstage team OFW has ever seen.

Lindsey Curtis, the National Director of Salon Growth and Development for Surface Hair Health Art was an integral part of the team that created the program, and knew exactly how to make it happen from the beginning.

“Meeting with the Omaha Fashion Week team I immediately knew what needed to be done to organize the culture of the Beauty Alliance. We needed to create an inviting & exciting work environment for the Beauty Alliance stylists backstage and a community to believe in.”

From conception, the team hit the ground running and immediately began finding strong, established partners to contact local salons and stylists. Stylists were paired with students, teams assigned to designers, and the Alliance organized exactly how backstage would look during the hectic week. No detail was left behind, as cohesion and collaboration were the main focus when creating the program. For Curtis, this even came down to what each stylist looked like, “Every stylist will be as one, wearing our OFW T-shirts. This will unite us as one team all working together in a creative environment, cheering each other on and encouraging one another to create beautiful hair and makeup masterpieces.”

While each stylist is given a t-shirt and assigned a team, they will also be working with the same products. This year, Surface Hair Health Art products will donate the hair products used by the Beauty Alliance as well as stylist take home product kits and swag bags for VIP attendees. Curtis adds that, “Surface Hair is the perfect sponsor for OFW because our main mission is believing in the

stylist. At Surface we only use certified organic ingredients because personal health of the stylists, salons and their guests is a HUGE factor in creating a healthy working environment.”

The working environment backstage will be different from previous years of Omaha Fashion Week which was more competitive, as individual salons were styling different designers. However, this year with the Beauty Alliance, “it is not about the salon group or creating competition amongst us. It is about building and believing in the stylist and making the designer our number one priority” Curtis says.

The Beauty Alliance program will create a team atmosphere, while building a stronger network of stylists in the Omaha community. The student participants are also being introduced to an unparalleled networking opportunity. Curtis says, “The professional stylists goal is to mentor our students to feel involved and important in the process of Omaha Fashion Week. Our hope is to build confidence and instill leadership with in our student network. Students are the future of our industry and the Beauty Alliance program will help to inspire our future to lead and encourage one another!”

OFW Music Director

Meet Keith Rodger. Known by most as Kethro, Keith is the mastermind behind the music at every show, from start to finish. He discovered his passion for music at a young age, which led him to now co-own Make Believe Recordings, a sister company of Make Believe Studios in downtown Omaha.

Beginning with Omaha Fashion Week in 2011, Kethro became Omaha Fashion Week’s official Music Director in 2016.

In this role, Kethro works individually with each designer to create a custom mix for their collection and is in charge of all the music throughout the week. For this year’s behind the scenes feature, we asked Kethro all about his enthusiasm for music, role in Omaha Fashion week, and more.

How did you become interested and start professionally in music?

Music has always been my primary focus in life. Ever since I was a kid, my mother exposed me to music that was very “avant-garde” compared to what most of my friends parents were allowing them to listen to. It sort of opened a gate in my mind to discover and explore new sounds and ideas that these artists were

creating. I was always fascinated by the stories they told within their art and how they expressed them. The weirder the artist, the more interest I had in them.

I started picking up instruments and playing at fifteen and started DJ-ing at sixteen. From there it became clear

Is there one event/opportunity that was a real high point for you?

Make Believe. Six years ago, I started to build the core of my career with a team of creatives who shared a similar vision. Over the course of our growth, we’ve expanded to 3 companies spanning from a world-class recording studio, a film & post-production studio, and a record label. This is something I have dedicated my life to and aim to make enough noise for the world to hear.

Time, editing and communication. My only goals are to give the designers the perfect sonic palette to express their work and to provide the general atmosphere with sounds of the past, present, and future, which have influenced the world.

What is it like working with each designer to put together his or her tracks for the show?

It takes a lot of communication to set an understanding on where the designer is taking her or his vision. Most of my time is spent listening to their stories and working with them to find music that accompanies the vision. Some designers know what they want to be played and how they want it structured. Others trust in me to help them build something new.

Take us behind the scenes of your role during a typical night of Omaha Fashion Week... what goes through your mind?

As chaotic as these settings are I am always calm and collected. Since I am providing the music from start to finish every evening, my only focus is to keep the overall tone balanced and pure.

What is your favorite part of the night?

When the show begins. At that very moment is when everyone has to let go and fly. Everything we all worked so hard for is being tested by time, and every second matters. I love that feeling.

Benefits Inner Beauty Salon at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, has raised over $20,000 since inception five years ago. The Inner Beauty Salon works with cancer survivors on dealing with changes to their image while undergoing treatment. The salon provides prosthetics and consultation on changes to hair, skin and nails.
