Storm Damage Can Be Devastating ...

ASSESSING YOUR ROOF DAMAGE: Property, businesses and homes can be damaged beyond belief.

Knowing the best steps you can take after the storm passes can assure your safety and ability to receive all services and benefits available to you. Remain as calm as possible, work with your contractor(s) and insurance company and hopefully lives and property can be put back together quickly.

Common signs of roof damage include missing shingles, bruises or dented asphalt shingles, cracked or broken tile, slate, or concrete shingles, granules collecting in gutters or downspouts, leaks in your roof or ceiling, dents on vents, gutters or flashing.

During severe storms asphalt shingles can be seriously damaged and require repair or replacement.

On an asphalt roof, hail damage looks like a dark spot, or bruise, where the roofing granules have become knocked away. In some cases you may find holes, cracking, or missing shingles on roofs with hail or storm damage. After a tornado, you may notice split seams and torn or missing shingles. This can result in leaking and serious water damage, which can lead to mold formation and wood rot, which can compromise the structural integrity of your roof resulting in collapse. In severe wind storms, it is common for shingles or sections of the roof to be missing altogether.

On other types of roofs, including shake (wood), metal, tile and slate, damage can include broken or cracked shingles, missing shingles, torn or split seams and missing sections of the roof. If a tree limb or other debris has fallen onto your roof during the storm, you may have structural damage and will need to exercise extreme caution.

Don’t Let Storm Scammers Get You! Every year, many homes and commercial buildings are damaged by severe storms. Property owners become the victims of unlicensed, uninsured, inexperienced contractors and outright scammers who come to prey on uninformed people. Poor quality contractors and scammers can cause permanent damage, devalue your property, steal money and put you at personal, legal and financial risk...not to mention all the headaches!

Many scams begin with a knock at your door, or an unsolicited call on the phone, claiming to be a contractor. Unfortunately, many scam companies imitate legitimate contractors, so protect yourself by checking your contractor out, before agreeing to an inspection.

Make sure any contractor you work with is property licensed, insured, and provides 3 local references for your protection.

Out of State Contractors Many excellent storm restoration companies have multiple offices around the country, or travel to work hard hit storm areas. However, as with any contractor you hire, you’ll want to do your homework and check the contractor out before signing a contingency agreement or contract to do any work on your property. If you decide to hire a contractor that is based out of state, make sure they have a local office, or a reciprocal relationship with a local contractor, who will perform warranty repairs, if your contractor should leave the state. It is important to remember your workmanship warranty is worthless, if your out-of-state contractor leaves the state and does not have a local representative obligated to honor the warranty.

Easy Steps To Reduce Lawn Watering This Season When it comes to watering your lawn, more doesn’t mean better. In fact, reducing the amount of water you put on your lawn & garden has important benefits. For one, you’ll be able to spend less time caring for your landscape. You’ll also help conserve natural resources. And, you won’t take a soaking on your water bill.

“Many people tend to over-water and may be harming their lawns without knowing it,” says Gerry Hood, president of the Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association. “In fact, watering too frequently can create shallow roots, whereas deeper roots are needed to make plants more drought-resistant. If you water only as much as needed, the root system will grow deeper into the soil.”

HOW MUCH WATER IS ENOUGH? Lawn-watering needs change with the season and the weather. Follow these general rules to determine the best watering “diet” for your lawn.

• As a rule, lawns require only about an inch of water a week. The amount may vary, depending on where you live, so check with the staff at your local garden center for recommendation.

• Figure out how long it takes your sprinkler to water one inch. The next time you water the lawn place a few emply coffee mugs around your sprinkler, and measure how long it takes for the mugs to fill with one inch of water. That’s how long you need to water your lawn once each week.

• Use your judgement to adjust this schedule according to the amount of rainfall you receive.

• Water in the early morning or evening hours when the evaporation level is lowest.

When a severe storm hits, the exterior of your home sustains the most damage. Hail, wind, heavy rain and flying debris are common causes of exterior damage. If your home has been hit by hail, you may notice discolored spots, dents, chips or cracks in your paint or siding. If you have a stucco home, look for cracking, chipping and holes in the stucco.

In high wind areas, many homes have protective storm shutters to protect exposed glass. However, with storm shutters, many windows can get cracked or damaged.

If your home has been hit by hail, winds or a tornado, cracked or broken windows and damaged window casings are the most common signs of damage. Remember, a broken, shattered or missing window is dangerous. Watch out for shards of glass and make sure you board up any shattered windows until they can be repaired.
