INNOVATION. COLLABORATION. CELEBRATION.
Together, we are helping bring the Hope and Healing Expansion to life. The local owners of our area’s McDonald’s Restaurants are proud to donate a penny and a half per pound of fries sold to support Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha. Pennies are being collected from participating McDonald’s Restaurants throughout the local region until $1 MILLION is raised - creating the opportunity to expand the current House to double the amount of rooms and further support critically ill children and their families residing at the House. We’d like to thank our loyal customers for their ongoing support.

A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS
MORE THAN A HOUSE By Lindsey Rai Kortan and Susie Nelson It is our sincere privilege to introduce our new and improved home. A home for families fighting large battles away from their own homes, and a home where families find hope for the future. Three years ago, at a chance luncheon, we met for the first time and shared our ideas and plans for the future. Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha was beginning a $10.3 million expansion campaign to double the size of the facility after turning away families nearly 800 times that year alone. Angels Among Us was seeking a permanent home closer to the hospitals that treat
pediatric cancer, a home where families they support financially would find emotional support as well and where new families could be introduced to these services. Over that three-hour lunch, a partnership was born. We learned that many of the families we serve come from the same communities. Medical diagnoses force those families to leave their communities, and drop them in a city they know nothing about. So we knew we needed to provide not only a warm environment away from home, but also a community of people who genuinely care for them while they walk an incredibly difficult journey.
This is more than a house expansion, because this is more than a house. This is a place where families can find comfort and hope thanks to an incredible group of supporters who continually go the extra mile to help make their lives as normal as possible. This is a place where extraordinary partners come together to ensure those families have everything they need, whether that means a warm bed and home-cooked meals, financial assistance, educational resources, or anything else that allows them to focus on the health of their children. We hope you will take time to read the stories of families whose lives have been
impacted by their experiences with both Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha and Angels Among Us and the difference we are making together. This project is the culmination of countless hours of hard work from our organizations, our partners, our friends, and our community – all of you. Quite simply, we couldn’t have done any of this without this great community we call home. Lindsey Rai Kortan is executive director of Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha. Susie Nelson is executive director of Angels Among Us.

A HOUSE BECOMES A COMMUNITY Partners and programs expand services for kids and families By Tim Winters Twice as many rooms for the families. Upgraded amenities. New playrooms for children. An office/locker room for volunteers. All are benefits of the newly expanded Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha (RMHC). And with those physical changes come better opportunities to expand another facet of the organization: its partnerships with community organizations. Executive Director Lindsey Rai Kortan said that when the RMHC staff and board began looking at expansion, an emphasis was put on collaborative programming aimed at helping the entire family. “We were good at healing, but we thought we could do more, in addition to offering an exceptional living space,” she said. The staff interviewed patients, parents and others involved in the organization and medical fields about what more could be done. Some parents, for example, said they would like to get a GED, so RMHC began offering help to meet that goal. Another resource now available comes from Angels Among Us, which offers extensive financial assistance to families with children fighting cancer. The Omaha group now has its office in the expanded House. “We try to stay ahead of what the families need,” Kortan said. To stay ahead, the organization’s plan for expansion included a first-of-its-kind 3,000-square-foot, in-house treatment center to be independently operated by medical
professionals. Because patients and other family members can be displaced for months at a time, often creating gaps in education, RMHC began partnering with Completely KIDS, which offers tutoring and fun programs for patients, their siblings and their parents. Vicky Coleman, program director at RMHC, said other groups coming to the House include Why Arts, which promotes healing through the arts, and the Simon Says Foundation, which throws parties to celebrate birthdays each month. Students in the Accelerated Nursing Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center provide various resources for the whole family. Grief’s Journey offers trauma and grief counseling and workshops. Coleman also has plans for a social work practicum program, as well as cooking and nutrition classes for parents whose children may need new diets after their medical procedures. “Our community is so awesome at rallying around the families,” Coleman said. “I seldom hear the word ‘no’ when we ask for help.” The organization has added 12 programs in collaboration with others in the community. “We have been fortunate to have leaders who value how business is done in the nonprofit area,” Kortan said. But more can be done with programming. The expanded space at RMHC should bolster the interdependent support network among the families.
KURT A. KEELER
The newly expanded Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha is in prime position to expand its partnerships to help more families.
“We have a lot of different needs in the Ronald McDonald House community,” she said. “Everybody wants to be understood
and belong – to feel like this is home. With our staff and support systems, we can tell them, ‘We’ve got your back.’”

NEW MEXICO FAMILY FEELS MIDWESTERN LOVE From a triple-organ transplant to a cross-country move, the Schmitz family found support at RMHC in Omaha By Tim Winters Eden Schmitz had her “best year ever” in 2018 – just two short stays in the hospital. For most kids, those two stays would not qualify as much of a milestone. But for 6-year-old Eden, they represented a whole new world. “Before our move to Omaha,” said Eden’s mother, Theresa, “she was in the hospital nearly every month. Some stays were for two or three months.” Eden was born May 19, 2012, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The next day, she was diagnosed with duodenal atresia after doctors found what appeared to be an intestinal blockage. Her hometown doctors referred her to the intestinal rehabilitation program at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Eden’s parents needed a place to call home so they could focus on the newborn’s care. That place was Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha, and it was the first of several stays there for the family. In 2014, the family was back in Omaha so Eden could receive a triple-organ transplant – a new liver, small intestine and pancreas. Ronald McDonald House again became a home away from home. “The meals provided by the volunteers as well as the pantry donations really helped us get on our feet,” Theresa said. “Many times we were flown from New Mexico to Nebraska without much time to prepare. As a transplant family, we just never knew if this was a ‘quick’ two-week stay or if we would be in-patient for months.” Financial pressure added to the family’s distress. Theresa’s husband, Daniel, said that without the Ronald McDonald House, the family

The Schmitz family: Daniel, Eden, Ezekiel, Malakai and Theresa. Eden, 6, has been in and out of the hospital since birth. “We were sinking pretty hard,” her dad says of the medical expenses. Ronald McDonald House helped the family relocate from New Mexico to Omaha, where things are more stable now.
would have needed to look into long-term rental housing options during Eden’s lengthy stays, including one for a transplant-related cancer. “To think about paying not only for a mortgage back home but rent on top of that, it was monumental,” he said in a 2016 blog post on the House website. “We were sinking pretty hard for a while financially, and the Ronald McDonald House helped a ton with that.” While the Ronald McDonald House did not provide direct financial aid, its other support meant a lot. “It’s gotten us through some very hard
times, times that we’ve had less than nothing,” Daniel said. Families now have better and quicker access to financial support with the move of Angels Among Us into the Ronald McDonald House. The organization offers help for expenses such as mortgage payments, utilities and other bills for families with children battling cancer. Because Eden faced continued care from her Omaha doctors, the family made the difficult decision to move from its hometown. Theresa said the Ronald McDonald House helped out again. “Without their organization, we wouldn’t
have been able to transition from New Mexico as quickly as we did. “With their help, Eden is so much more healthy than she’s been since her transplant. We are forever grateful for all they did for our family throughout our daughter’s recovery. “From our first stay when Eden was just 2 months old to our last when she was 5 years old, they have been a huge part of our journey and have given Eden so much more than we could express.” Theresa said the family’s greatest blessing in the midst of all the chaos was coming to Omaha and knowing Eden was getting the absolute best care she could get. “The doctors in Omaha saved her life.” Eden is now in first grade with her brother Malakai, 5. Both are home-schooled. They have another brother, Ezekiel, 1. Daniel is an officer with the Omaha Police Department. Theresa said the move from New Mexico in 2016 was “the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make as a family. We left all we knew and loved to get Eden to Omaha.” Two years later, they are in a home around the corner from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The kids play sports. They attend Westside Church. They say they have had tremendous support from the hospital staff, their church and their friends from the Ronald McDonald House. “The staff at Ronald McDonald House will always have a very special place in our hearts,” she said. “They supported us and became our Omaha family during our stays. We stay in communication with them and appreciate the friendships we’ve developed.”

EASING THE STRUGGLE Angels Among Us was born out of a parent’s worst nightmare – the death of a child
HOW ANGELS AMONG US WORKS
By Tim Winters Kelly Walsh of Omaha had recently lost her son Skylar to neuroblastoma, a rare type of childhood cancer. Walsh and her friend Cathy Bauer of Omaha wanted to give back and help other families struggling with the terrible disease. Over the past 12 years, the Angels Among Us group they founded has assisted more than 400 families from Nebraska and Iowa with more than $1.7 million in support. Patients and families from other states have also received support during treatment at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and the Nebraska Medical Center. Since 2006, Executive Director Susie Nelson said, Angels Among Us has grown into a widely known, reputable organization that is striving to be prominent and visible across the community. Angels Among Us is now taking another big step in its mission by moving its office into the remodeled Ronald McDonald House. “For a number of years, we have wanted to create a permanent home closer to the families we serve,” Nelson said. “It was only through a chance meeting over lunch with Lindsey Rai Kortan (executive director of the Ronald McDonald House) that this partnership was created. “The partnership felt like a really good fit.” At the time, the office of Angels Among Us was in west Omaha. “Our new space is not only closer to the hospitals and families, it also has special features for the families such as a KidZone for patients and their siblings to forget about life for a while. It also has a conference room where we can meet privately with

families who need our assistance.” The move will provide other benefits as well, Nelson believes. “The space will allow us to be creative in other ways – to partner with the staff of the Ronald McDonald House to create a true healing community for families needing support. We think it is a win-win partnership that will have a big impact in our community.” That impact is already substantial. Last year, Angels Among Us assisted nearly 100 families from Nebraska and Iowa with more than $350,000 in aid. Money for mortgages, rent, utilities and other necessities help the families stay financially stable. “We are the largest pediatric cancer as-
finances,” Nelson said. That focus has a direct bearing on the child’s welfare. According to the Archives of Disease in Childhood, children heal 31 percent faster when they have a family member staying with them to provide emotional support. “Angels Among Us not only assists financially, we also create a sense of community through a network of peer support groups, resources and information to get these families through this unfortunate time,” Nelson said. “Our ability to quickly come to the aid of families allows them to stay in control of their finances rather than having a financial pitfall or turn to government assistance.”

sistance program in Nebraska and we want families to know we are here for them,” Nelson said. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the news is not just devastating to the parents emotionally, Nelson said. Financial difficulties can soon follow. Often, one of the parents must quit work or cut hours to be with the child during treatments. For a single parent, the situation can be worse. The average cost of cancer treatment for a child is $500,000. Even with insurance, Nelson said, the out-of-pocket cost is an average of $35,000. “By quickly providing financial assistance to those who qualify, we are able to allow the parents to focus on the child rather than

A MOST DIFFICULT JOURNEY THE MORENO FAMILY By Tim Winters Parents whose children are undergoing treatment for major illnesses soon realize that whatever else is happening, the bills keep coming, Irma Moreno of Omaha says. “They don’t stop. People need help with things other than hospital bills. Insurance doesn’t cover everything,” said the mother of 10-year-old Raphael, who has had three bouts with cancer. Rent, mortgages, utilities and gas are some of the items she mentions – the very things that Angels Among Us helps finance. “People should help Angels Among Us any way they can,” Moreno said. “They do such important work for families like ours.” Moreno speaks from experience. When Raphael was first being treated for leukemia in 2011, a social worker at the University of Nebraska Medical Center told Irma about Angels Among Us. “I love Angels Among Us,” Moreno said. “I consider them friends. Their support goes beyond finances. They offer a lot of emotional support, too.” As if one cancer diagnosis wasn’t enough, Angels Among Us also stepped in when her son battled bone cancer in 2016 and yet again when he relapsed with leukemia for a second time in 2017. Moreno said the new Angels Among Us office at Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha will help a lot more families find out about the group and what it can do. “I’ve told a lot of people about Angels Among Us. But because they were so far west it made it difficult. This will make it easier for people to apply for help, especially for people staying at the Ronald McDonald House. “The new office is so much bigger. Kids can play in one room while their parents do paperwork in a separate office.” As of Feb. 28, 2019, Raphael has been done with treatments. Moreno, however,

BRINGING FAMILIES HOPE AND HELP UNDER ONE ROOF
Every penny counts. Together, we make hope and healing possible.
