he Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce was established in 1952 and is Plattsmouth’s largest member-based business advocacy organization.

According to its mission, “The Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization that advocates for all businesses and professional people in and around Plattsmouth. The Chamber adds strength to our business-community image, assists with economic development, promotes our community, and is a liaison between the private and public sectors. The Plattsmouth Main Street Entertainment Plaza is home to numerous fun activities throughout the year.

T

he Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Plattsmouth Community Center and the Harvest Festival hold numerous events throughout the year. Public gathering restrictions due to coronovirus have put 2020 events in question. At the time of publication, it was uncertain if or when these events would be held. PLATTSMOUTH HARVEST FESTIVAL

The Plattsmouth Harvest Festival is the oldest annual harvest festival in Nebraska. Generally held in September, 2020 marks the 88th year for the familyfriendly event. It features four days of pageantry, parades, carnival rides, an antique tractor show and races, craft fair, car show and shine, contests and games, and a lot more fun for all ages.

FOOD TRUCK WARS

Food Truck Wars take place on Main

Street. Food trucks compete for a $1,500 cash prize. Live entertainment, a street dance and a beer garden are part of the festivities. Miss Plattsmouth has been crowned at this event.

FRIDAY NIGHT OUT

Friday Night Out is a showcase of local food, beverages and services.

Held at the Entertainment Plaza at Fourth and Main Streets in downtown Plattsmouth, this event draws large crowds and features live music and a fun atmosphere.

CRUIZIN’ MAIN CRUIZIN’ MAIN

Historic Main Street in downtown Plattsmouth hosts the Cruizin’ Main celebration. More than 700 cars are expected at this show and shine. Past events have also featured local food vendors and live music.

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS ON MAIN

Victorian Christmas on Main, generally held in late November, is a warm way to celebrate the holiday season. The free event has included hayrack, pony and horse-drawn carriage rides, plus a reindeer petting zoo. Father Christmas, music and food will be part of the celebration. Many businesses will be open with shopping deals and refreshments during the event. Caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony are planned at the Cass County Museum. The log cabin and caboose at the end of Main Street will be decorated and open.

The Amazing Race — Road Rally is an event where teams of two to six people compete for cash prizes.

EDUCATION

lattsmouth students can attend three vibrant school systems that provide many educational opportunities.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Plattsmouth Community Schools is an accredited public school district that offers classes for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district also oversees Plattsmouth Early Childhood Center, which provides a diverse range of enrichment programs for younger students.

Many PCS teachers hold advanced degrees in their subjects and have helped students secure a variety of prestigious academic honors. The district also provides students with opportunities to excel in fine arts, athletics, culinary arts and vocational programs.

District patrons passed a $15 million bond issue in 2019. The school district is currently working on more than three dozen renovation and construction projects with bond funds. One of the largest projects is a new vocational technology center at the high school. It will house classes for subjects such as agriculture, automotive mechanics, metals, woodworking and culinary arts.

Plattsmouth High School operates in an academy learning structure that allows students to focus on their interests and careers. Teenagers can gain real-world experience through partnerships and mentorships with many area businesses.

Teachers, administrators and staff members held a celebration in January 2020 after the National Career Academy Coalition awarded Plattsmouth with the “Model Career Academy” designation. The distinction allowed PHS to join an elite group of schools in the United States. There are only three Nebraska schools that have achieved the honor, and many other recipients in the nation are located

EDUCATION PRIVATE SCHOOLS St. John the Baptist Catholic School and First Baptist School both provide Christian-focused educational environments for area residents. St. John the Baptist Catholic School offers classes for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. First Baptist School offers classes for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

St. John the Baptist Catholic School has a positive academic tradition. Students perform above national averages in every academic field. Children are able to live their faith through service to others and daily Mass attendance. The school is connected to the Church of the Holy Spirit parish. SOUTHEAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEARNING CENTER Southeast Community College has brought higher education to Plattsmouth with the creation of the Learning Center downtown.

Now nearly four years old, the Learning Center offers classes, workshops and trainings to help the community and surrounding area stay current with job skills, earn college credit or acquire a new hobby.

A number of credit and dual-credit classes are offered toward completing general education credits at SCC. Those include prerequisite classes for Health Sciences programs, beginning program courses and a portion of the Associate of Arts degree.

Non-credit workforce training opportunities also are offered for those interested in enhancing a job skill, gaining recertification in a specific trade or starting a new career path.

Rhylander Park Named after a former mayor, Plattsmouth’s largest park runs along Lincoln Avenue from Third to 11th Avenues. Features include playground equipment, a walking trail, baseball/softball fields, soccer fields and a public restroom.

Located near the center of Plattsmouth at Fifth Street and Second Avenue, this beautiful park boasts a small walking trail, lighted gazebo, Veterans Memorial Garden and public restrooms.

Memorial Park Located in the southwest part of the city at Fourth Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets, it features a nine-hole disc golf course,

playground equipment, covered picnic area and public restrooms. The city’s skate park is adjacent to Memorial Park on 18th Street.

Indian Springs On South 18th Street, behind the Community Center, a fishing lake with a handicapped-accessible fishing pier and a covered picnic shelter.

Tennis Tennis courts are available in the subdivision at Bradford Drive and Queens Way.

Golf There are two golf courses in the area. Bay Hills Golf Club and Lake Ridge Golf Course are great places to spend an afternoon.

he Plattsmouth Recreation Department works hard to keep the community active and engaged year-round.

The mission of the Plattsmouth Recreation Department is to provide recreation and cultural opportunities for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

The membership-based center offers a four-lane heated pool, an indoor track, a group fitness room, a basketball/volleyball gymnasium and a fitness/wellness area with free weights, 13 weightlifting stations and cardiovascular machines. Personal trainers are on staff, and child care is available six days per week (check website for days and times). Free WiFi and wallet lockers are available to all center guests.

Twin Rivers Water Park Located just west of Memorial Park at 18th Street and Fourth Avenue, the park is generally open seven days a week from late May through August.

Due to coronavirus, the pool will not open in 2020.

The facility has a modern pool with a zero-depth to 3-foot swimming area that contains several water fountains, umbrellas and water toys. A second swimming area is 4 to 6 feet deep and has a 12-foot-deep diving area with diving board. A spiral water slide empties into a 3-foot-deep pool. The diving area contains a water speed slide that propels swimmers into the 12-foot-deep area.

lattsmouth is a strong city and an even stronger community. Through floods, fires, windstorms and blizzards — sometimes all in the same year — the citizens of Plattsmouth have continued to overcome obstacles and come out stronger than before.

Just like we overcame the flooding and water emergency of 2019, we will do the same with the COVID-19 pandemic. Working together, we will come out of this stronger because of our community. Each one of us can work together for the collective good and make this recovery shorter and better.

PLATTSMOUTH HISTORY

P

lattsmouth began in 1852 when Samuel Martin built a trading post on the western edge of the Missouri River. He erected a two-story home and another building from which he traded. Martin also operated a ferry from Coonsville (present-day Glenwood, Iowa).

A town-company was formed on Oct. 26, 1854. The following March, the town was incorporated and named the county seat of Cass County. The first town mayor, Wheatley Mickelwait, was elected in 1857.

When Plattsmouth was founded, the Missouri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade. Ferries carried passengers across the river, and paddlewheel boats docked at the town’s riverfront. Overland freight became a big industry for the town.

The route out of Plattsmouth, having fewer Platte River tributaries to cross, was preferred by many to haul supplies, both military and civilian, to

western outposts.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Robert Livingston organized Company A of the First Nebraska Volunteer Regiment and in October 1862 became the regimental commander.

After the war, Livingston persuaded the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad to make Plattsmouth its Nebraska headquarters. Construction of the rail line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and west to Kearney Junction began in early 1869. By December the first passenger trains were running, crossing the Missouri by ferry until 1880, when a bridge was completed.

Meanwhile, the Burlington built shops in Plattsmouth. By 1900, employment at the shops reached its peak — between 1,000 and 1,200 employees.

Although the territorial legislature designated Plattsmouth the Cass County seat in 1855, it wasn’t until 1888 that a majority of county citizens voted Plattsmouth the seat. The www.plattsmouthchamber.com

courthouse cornerstone was laid in June 1891 and the Romanesque-style edifice completed in 1892.

Car ferries across the Missouri River were replaced in 1930 by a steel truss vehicular bridge, carrying U.S. Highway 34.

Since 1931, the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival has been held every year, except during World War II. In 2013 it was renamed the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival.

Plattsmouth has had its share of disasters. In June 1961 the Riley Hotel and Parmele Theater, built in 1890 and 1903 respectively, were destroyed by fire. Up from the ashes, the hotel property became the Cass County Bank, and the theater site was added to the Historical Society museum next door.

In 1985, the Plattsmouth Downtown Historic District was created with 42 buildings placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plaques describe each historic structure.

ass County Historical Society was organized in 1936. Early displays were housed at the Cass County Courthouse. In 1960, the museum opened in its current location on Main Street.

There are several permanent exhibits that tell the history of Plattsmouth and Cass County, including part of the western migration.

The society also maintains three historic structures: the Joseph and Mary Cook Log Cabin, originally built in Mynard in 1868; a Burlington caboose built in 1913; and Rock Bluff School, a one-room brick schoolhouse southeast of Plattsmouth that was built in 1870.

A full-size replica of the white pirogue (boat) used by Lewis and Clark during their expedition to the West in the early 19th century was unveiled to the public in 2019.
