ohn Mangiameli, owner of Creative Hair Design Salon & Spa, knows that people are what makes a business successful.

I’m shampooing customers. I’m blow-drying customers for other employees. I’m getting customer’s coffee.”

lot of faith, a little flour and a family history of bakers.

That’s all Shandy Thorell had when she first dreamed of opening a bakery.

“We were absolutely broke,” Thorell says.

“We had no money, not even for groceries for our kids.”

In the eight and a half years since her dream began, with the baking knowledge passed down from her mother and grandmother, Thorell has transformed her dream into a reality: Shandy’s Bakery.

Thorell uses heritage recipes with a few key ingredients: Swedish love and personality.

“I put in the same love our grandmothers used when they baked the same recipes,” she says. “It gives people good memories, as well as excites the taste buds.”

Shandy’s Bakery offers a variety of baked goods, but the standouts are Scandinavian Almond Cake, Swedish Rye Bread, Swedish Princess Torte, “and of course the cinnamon rolls.”

The journey began in 2014. With help from her family, she sold warm bread from a wagon on the weekends. The next stop was a presence at local farmers markets. Finally, in 2018, Thorell opened a storefront.

Shandy’s Bakery is a winner in this year’s Omaha’s Choice Awards, a recognition that validates her years of effort, she says.

Owning a bakery is all about customer relationships and quality products, Thorell says.

“Getting to know my customers and hearing how my bread is used to touch lives makes the job worthwhile,” she says. “Seeing God work in those relationships is amazing.”

With strong support from loyal customers throughout the Omaha metro, Shandy’s Bakery has thrived.

“The love shown to me by my customers and people in Omaha has been incredible,” Thorell says. “I am astounded.”

T

he Nebraska Winery and Grape Growers Association’s annual showcase event — the TOAST Nebraska Wine Festival — is the largest gathering of Nebraska wineries in the state.

Nebraska winemakers and grape growers are proud of the quality wine and grapes they produce each year and are proud to present these wines in Omaha at the TOAST Nebraska Wine Festival and in Grand Island at the TOAST Nebraska Holiday Wine Festival.

This year, the TOAST Nebraska Wine Festival celebrated its eighth year on May 12-13 at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village. TOAST Nebraska is the only wine festival in the state to offer Nebraska wines exclusively.

Tickets to TOAST Nebraska are available for pre-sale and include a tasting glass, a wine tote, an event guide, and unlimited wine tastings. Tasting at a single winery can average $8-12 per tasting. With 17 wineries on-site, a TOAST Nebraska wine ticket is a fantastic value.

That’s how we were taught by our father.”

Their father, Jerry — the store’s namesake — opened the family-owned business in 1973. In the 50 years since, the owners of Jerry Ryan have developed meaningful relationships with their clientele.

“We’re very blessed to have great relationships,” Dan says.

“Dad started them, and we’ve kept them going.”

Some families have been patrons for generations. “We have third and even fourth generation customers,” Dan adds. “You help them as kids, and they keep coming back.”

The store offers a wide variety of high-quality men’s clothing and accessories, from formalwear to casual ensembles. The store employs three tailors, including head tailor Mounir Elbard, who has been at the store for 30 years and is “the undisputed master of his needle and thread domain.”

Jerry Ryan was named first place for Omaha’s Choice for Men’s Clothing again this year by World-Herald readers.

“It shows how hard we’ve worked in the community and how loyal our customers are. We can’t thank the Omaha community enough.”

The Purple Orchid received an Omaha’s Choice Award for Florist this year. Sjn credits the accolade to her stellar customer service and casual in-store atmosphere, which includes Ted the Frenchie greeting customers at the door.

“We don’t take things too seriously,” Sjn says. “We make sure to take care of every detail and treat you like a rock star.”

In addition to the recently expanded shop, The Purple Orchid also offers a mobile flower truck service for fundraisers, dance recitals and school programs, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the event.

The Peregrine’s many amenities include its own restaurant and bar.

The Habitat Restaurant offers modern American cuisine with an intimate ambience and style, known for its specialty cocktails and in-house smoked whiskey. The Take-Off rooftop bar is the only one of its kind in downtown Omaha, offering breathtaking views of the city.

In this year’s Omaha’s Choice Awards, chosen by World-Herald readers, the hotel and its brands received three First Place awards: Hotel (The Peregrine), American Fare (The Habitat) and Rooftop Bar (The Take-Off).
