he 9th annual Inspire: Celebrating Women’s Leadership Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Each year, the event honors outstanding women in 12 different categories. These women are recognized for their inspiring professional achievements and their dedication to making the Lincoln community a great place to live and work. This year’s recipients were selected from more than 200 nominations submitted by the public. The Inspire Advisory Board chose five finalists for each category, and named one as the overall winner for the category. S

usanne Blue served as Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach’s Executive Director for 25 years. Under her leadership, the organization grew from a volunteer-led soup kitchen to a professionally staffed community kitchen and outreach center offering housing, case management, outreach, substance use, and nutrition programming for families and individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. As a professional social worker, the programs implemented under Susanne’s leadership were based on research and best practices to comprehensively address identified community needs. Blue’s career in human services includes over 35 years of volunteer and professional work in community organizing, advocacy, crisis support, program planning, program evaluation, and grant writing. Her primary focus with these efforts has been on behalf of the homeless and working poor in both Omaha and Lincoln. Susanne is married to Jim Blue, President and CEO of CEDARS Youth Services. They have two grown children and a feisty Papillon pup.

D

r. Anne Hobbs, a licensed attorney and research faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has directed the Juvenile Justice Institute since 2009. Her focus is on helping underprivileged youth. She created the Juvenile Reentry Project in 2011, matching university students with detained youth who lack family and community support during their reintegration into society. This initiative not only benefits the youth but also equips students for careers in law, social services, and nonprofits, while challenging their biases about the criminal justice system. Initially an experiment, the reentry course has thrived for 15 semesters across five Nebraska universities, with other institutions adopting its model. Nearly 300 youth in the juvenile justice system have received support through these partnerships. Outside her career, Dr. Hobbs and her husband, licensed foster parents, have cared for 24 youth and adopted five children in 2018, alongside their four grown children in Nebraska.

s. Kelli King is currently the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Advocacy, Support, and Community Standards at UNL focusing on issues of college access and student success for marginalized populations, with a specific focus on issues related to advocacy and support, resources, and retention initiatives. Kelli oversaw a comprehensive college transition program for nearly 1,100 Susan T. Buffett scholarship students and has experience in learning communities, peer mentoring, leadership, and historical studies. King taught secondary education in Lincoln Public Schools and has attended Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York City. Ms. Kelli King has been diligently mentoring and motivating students in Nebraska for twenty years.

K

elly Ross established ECHO Collective in 2020 after working with the New American community for eight years in English language instruction, citizenship preparation, and immigration law. Through her work, she has developed a passion for those new to the United States and insight into the unique barriers they face in rebuilding their lives in Lincoln. She hopes to inspire her neighbors to connect across cultural, lingual, and socioeconomic boundaries because our lives are better in community. Ross also loves reading, traveling, and spending time with her spouse and two dogs.

s executive vice president-chief financial officer and treasurer, Sue Wilkinson oversees accounting and finance, corporate actuarial, risk and compliance, information technology and transformation. Because she believes deeply in giving back, Sue has served on numerous boards and advisory committees among Lincoln’s institutions of education, business, faith and community service. Her professional recognitions include the Nebraska Society of CPA’s 2020 Outstanding CPA in Business & Industry award. In January, she will take on a new role as President and Chief Operating Officer at Ameritas and add marketing and investments to her areas of responsibility. Sue and her husband Bert have two children, Chelsea and Jake.

Women Build Houses. Women Build Connections. Women Build Lincoln. Women Build Houses. Women Build is a fundraising and volunteering initiative to help build homes for families in need of safe, affordable housing and to assist families who are in need of repairs and yard maintenance. All participants are asked to raise a minimum of $500 and to volunteer one day either on a build site or on a Rock the Moms neighborhood revitalization project.

Women Build Connections. Habitat recognizes the power of women coming together and will host several informational networking opportunities. Everyone is welcome to attend. Topics include: entrepreneurialism, finance, equity in the workplace and more.

Women Build Lincoln. Habitat will host additional events and opportunities for the entire city to be a part of this campaign including Women Build Workshops -- where attendees can learn about hand/power tools and build their own furniture -- as well as the Hard Hat & Heels event -- where we celebrate the achievements of all of our Women Build participants and partners. Dr. Kelsi Anderson has been the provost at Bryan College of Health Sciences since 2018. Being provost gives her the opportunity to interact daily with faculty, staff, and students and to make an impact on the development of the healthcare workforce. Kelsi is passionate about supporting and advocating for students. This is demonstrated every spring in her Genetics class, through writing grants to fund tuition for underrepresented students, or by engaging in conversation with students about their own goals and aspirations. Dr. Bonita Sharif, Associate Professor, School of Computing (UNL)

Dr. Sharif directs the Software Engineering Research and Empirical Studies Lab in the School of Computing at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Her research interests are in software engineering education and practice. She strongly believes serving local communities in whatever way you can is the key to long-term happiness. Bonita is passionate about making STEM fields accessible to girls and women by creating opportunities for them to learn and get started. Bonita serves as the board treasurer for the non-profit Girls Code Lincoln, and volunteers at the Lincoln Youth Symphony. In addition, she serves on the Lincoln Track Club board and helps with the vendor expo for the Lincoln Marathon. Bonita has two wonderful daughters, Bella and Sofia.

Debbie Buckley, LADC,NCPSS, St. Monica’s “Life Changing Recovery for Women” Debbie Buckley is currently the Clinical Manager for St Monica’s “Life Changing Recovery for Women”. She began her journey in February of 2018 with St. Monica’s as a Parenting Peer Support Specialist. She holds a License as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), and has her National and State certification as a Peer Support Specialist. Natalie Elsberry, Of the Earth [Florals] Natalie Elsberry started serving the community as a wedding florist after working out of her home for 11 years. After seeing the need for a different kind of florist and flower shop, she opened Of the Earth florals almost 4 years ago. She understands the value of small and local businesses, which is shown by including over 35 small businesses in the store’s boutique offerings. She believes that flowers can heal and brighten a home even in a dark time. Because of that she started Project Thunder, a resource that gets flowers into the hands of those experiencing the storm of a miscarriage or infant death. Spreading love through flowers is what we do.

erries by Jillian specializes in custom chocolate covered strawberries and other chocolate covered treats. It all began during the pandemic as a way to pass time and quickly turned into a thriving business which will celebrate 3 years on September 1st. Approximately 7 years ago after a life changing event, Jillian became homeless, addicted to drugs, and suffered greatly with her mental health. Because of this Jillian takes great pride in using the negativity from her past to provide hope for others. She strives to create products that will put a smile on the face of Lincolnites through unique desserts. Jillian is part of Creative Collabs, a local women business owner collective here in Lincoln. Jenna Vitosh, Arrive Coworking Jenna Vitosh is the owner of Arrive Coworking, a community focused on empowering women as they start and grow their businesses. Barb Derrick, Research Associates As the co-founder of Research Associates, a majority-female owned marketing consulting firm established in 1975, she has dedicated her career to empowering businesses for greater success. Willa DiCostanzo, The City of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities -Solid Waste Management Division

Willa DiCostanzo has a degree in English and Environmental Science from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She works at The City of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities -Solid Waste Management Division as the Waste Diversion Coordinator for nearly five years. In addition to her work at the City of Lincoln, Willa is the Vice President of the Nebraska Recycling Council and is on the board of the Lincoln Earth Day Coalition. She has husband Dylan and is the mother of two amazing children. Willa is passionate about uniting, igniting, and mentoring individuals working to achieve goals focused on environmental sustainability and informed civic engagement.

Amber Knapp, LADC, Project Director for the WIOA Title IB Adult, Dislocated Worker, and Yess Programs

Amber Knapp is the Project Director for the WIOA Title IB Adult, Dislocated Worker, and Yess Programs. Throughout her career Amber has worked in several positions from case manager to quality assurance, to supervisor and now Project Director. Amber has served in the Project Director role for the past three years improving the Title IB program in the number of individuals served and an increase in local State Performance Standards. Amber is passionate about serving others and helping them reach their career goals. Her greatest joy is watching her children and grandchildren grow into giving and loving human beings.

Dr. Ronesha Love, EdD, American Job Center for Lancaster and Saunders Counties

Ronesha is the One-Stop Operator for the American Job Center, serving Lancaster and Saunders Counties. This public workforce system collaborates with government, industry, and non-profits to support community development, businesses, and employment opportunities. Her role involves managing daily operations, assisting job seekers with employment tools, working with employers on staffing needs, and nurturing partnerships. With a doctorate in Education from Doane University and membership in Leadership Lincoln Fellows 38, she committed to helping others achieve career goals. As a parent of four children aged 3-14, Ronesha instills the importance of community service and volunteerism. She also serves on the boards of the White Cane Foundation and Prolific Performance, while contributing to the Smith Scholarship selection committee at Lutheran Family Services for two years.

Christa Yoakum, Lancaster County Commissioner Christa has long fought for opportunity and access for all Nebraskans through decades of nonprofit board service, city and LPS committees and nonprofit work. She continues that now as a Lancaster County Commissioner. Among her priorities are mental health care access, decreasing jail census and continued public safety improvements for Lancaster County residents. Christa has led efforts to create the community Strategic Welcoming and Belonging Plan to signify the commitment between many community partners including local government in welcoming newcomers, remove barriers to success and create pathways to success.

etsy Anderson, PT, MSPT’s role as a physical therapist contributes to the essential multidisciplinary collaboration in healthcare. Her full-time work is at Makovicka Physical Therapy as clinic director of the Pine Lake West clinic. She teaches classes at the Cooper and Copple YMCAs and has volunteered extensively in the community. Betsy is the mom of two sophomore athletes: Bergen at Colorado State University in Pueblo, CO, and Tanyn at Southwest High School.

Melody Gagner, RN, BSN, NHA, joined Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals as the Director of Nursing for St. Jane de Chantal Long Term Care Services in 2007. She later assumed the role of administrator of Long Term Care Services in 2013. Her passion for long term care began as a nurse aide at the age of 15, and she has dedicated more than 46 years to her profession. Gagner’s collaborative, servant-leadership style has resulted in positive resident/patient care outcomes and national recognition. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services named St. Jane de Chantal a “COVID-19 Hero” for its low incidence of COVID-19 cases among its residents and patients. More recently, the facility has been recognized as one of the “Best Nursing Homes” by U.S. News & World Report in 2022-2023.

Dr. Farrah Plate, DDS, Align Dental Dr. Plate and her husband Chris own and operate Align Dental. They provide mobile dental care to special needs residents in various healthcare facilities. As a volunteer at The People’s City Mission Free Clinic, Dr. Plate understands the negative impact teeth can have on a person’s self esteem, particularly females. There is no greater reward than giving these beautiful women their smiles back. In the future, she aspires to improve access to quality dental care for Lincoln’s most vulnerable by working with the dental community, families, non-profits, and DHHS. Her proudest accomplishments are her 24 year marriage to Chris and their 2 daughters Ava, 18 and Ella, 12. Jill Rine, PA-C, Marathon Health

Jill has been a Physician Assistant for 26 years. She currently works for Marathon Health at Duncan Aviation in Lincoln. She started in medicine because of the people she could help and the relationships she could build with her patients. She feels healthcare needs to about meeting people where they are and walking beside them, not telling people what they should be or how they should change. Every person is different and deserves the respect to be listened to and heard. Jill is also passionate about volunteering outside of work and family, helping with youth sports and leadership. She has been involved in the foster system and has developed many lasting relationships with families, adults, and children. She is married with 6 beautiful children and 1 grandchild.

Macala Carter, Center for People Inspired by its mission, Executive Director Macala Carter accepted leadership of Center for People in July 2022 after an accomplished 21-year career in banking. Since then, Macala has worked tirelessly to preserve the organization’s critical needs programming and honor its history while also ushering in a new era of reflection and renewal that has garnered unprecedented levels of public sector support for its growing workforce development programming. Having strong ties to the nonprofit community, Macala previously served on the board of the Nebraska Bankers Association and currently serves on the boards of Leadership Lincoln, Family Services of Lincoln, and the Lancaster Foundation for Adults with Disabilities.

Excellence in Nonprofit Paige Piper BraveBe Child Advocacy Center

P

aige Piper, Executive Director of BraveBe Child Advocacy Center since June 2020, oversees agency operations, budgeting, program development, and staff leadership. Notably, she spearheaded a $5.2M capital campaign, fostering collaborations with the Lincoln Police Department, Foster Care Closet, and local mental health providers. This expansion improved medical services, training, and prevention efforts. In 2022, Piper initiated an Adverse Childhood Experience project, uniting agencies to enhance trauma awareness and response in Lincoln. Prior to her current role, she collaborated with Bulu, Inc., crafting multi-million-dollar business plans for Disney, Crayola, and Clorox. As a former Development Director at the Child Advocacy Center, she excelled in fundraising, donor development, grant writing, and marketing. Paige serves on the board of the Nebraska Alliance of Child Advocacy Centers, teaches as an adjunct professor at Nebraska Wesleyan University, and coaches varsity dance at Lincoln Lutheran High School. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Sandra Rojo, Bryan Medical Center Sandra Rojo is a true professional and servant-leader who got there the hard way. As Associate Director for English Language Programs at Lincoln Literacy, she helps over 1,000 immigrants and refugees a year to gain the communications skills they need to flourish. Sandra was born in a tiny, impoverished village with a lone primary school in Hidalgo, Mexico. At the age of 14 she moved to Mexico City and went to work as a live-in maid. At 20, she emigrated to America, gained legal status, got married and moved to Lincoln with her husband and two sons. In 2004, she began learning English at Lincoln Literacy. She was hired first as a childcare worker, then a van driver, and after she’d earned her GED, a program coordinator, and eventually the senior position she now holds. Along the way, Sandra became a U.S. citizen and is an inspiration to all who know her. Rose Godinez, ACLU of Nebraska

Rose oversees the ACLU of Nebraska’s statewide legal program, employing litigation, advocacy, and education strategies to drive systemic change. Her impactful civil rights caseload spans police practices, Racial and Indigenous Justice, Immigrants’ Rights, Voting Rights, and Students’ Rights. Raised in Lexington as the daughter of immigrant meatpacking plant workers, Rose champions workers’rights. Her policy, advocacy, and litigation work have reshaped Nebraska’s laws, notably requiring anti-bias training for law enforcement, safeguarding student and parental rights, and protecting students from discrimination based on hair, headdress, and tribal regalia. Rose graduated from Creighton University and St. Louis University School of Law.

Amber C. Nore, Mosaic

Amber is the Community Relations Manager and Fundraiser for Mosaic in Southeast Nebraska. Her superpower is CONNECTION. She is the proud mama to a beautiful and brave 24 year-old named Chloe. Amber not only enjoys being a high-performer in business, but also on stages in community theatre and as a singer in a rock band. She loves art, reading, vinyl records, house plants, yoga and supporting local. Amber has a heart of service and is honored to be a member of Rotary Club #14, Kiwanis, Junior League, Optimist International, PEO and a volunteer chef for Lasagna Love. She lives in an art gallery in the Haymarket.

Morgan serves as the first full-time director of Women Investing in Nebraska, a collective giving circle that awards annual grants to Nebraska nonprofits and University of Nebraska projects. A Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach and 2020 UNL graduate, Morgan will complete her MBA at UNL in December. Marissa Whalen, a dedicated entrepreneur, stands as the founder and owner of two influential brands: Little Movements Apparel and Core Movements. With a strong commitment to empowering women, Marissa, alongside her exceptional team, has nurtured Little Movements into a prominent women’s athletic wear boutique, spanning locations in Lincoln, NE, and a thriving e-commerce platform. As an innovator, she co-created a groundbreaking sports bra with seamlessly integrated padding at Core Movements, revolutionizing comfort, support, and design in the athletic wear industry. Born and raised in rural Nebraska, she has shared her entrepreneurial journey with her husband Nolan and their four children, Knox, Nash, Nyle, and Navy. Marissa’s story reflects the remarkable blend of determination, innovation, authenticity, and a genuine passion for empowering others with positivity that drives her businesses.

A

s a doctoral candidate in school psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Abril has provided psychological services in a variety of settings including schools, community mental health clinics and juvenile justice facilities. She also serves on the Associate Board of Directors for the Joyce Ivy Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides academically talented young women from the Midwest with summer pre-college scholarships to selective institutions across the US. Over the last ten years, she has partnered with several Nebraska high schools to successfully increase JIF summer scholar recruitment and was recently named Co-Chair of the Summer Scholars Selection Committee in 2023.

Anna Krueger, Palantir Anna Krueger is a recent graduate of the Raikes School of Computer Science and Business at UNL, and has started a job as a forward deployed engineer at a tech company called Palantir in Washington, DC. Anna is passionate about helping the community, and throughout her time in college she volunteered in after school programs, STEM mentorship programs, and at the Matt Talbot soup kitchen. She also served as a computer science teaching assistant and student advisory board president. She wants to be an example for young girls who are interested in STEM fields, and encourage more women to enter into computer science. Shelby Chopp, Duncan Aviation Shelby was born and raised in Lincoln, NE where she graduated from Lincoln Southwest High School. She is currently the administrative assistant for the Airframe Department at Duncan Aviation and is active in the Duncan United Way Committee; Soaring to Serve, which focuses on giving back to our communities; and NextGen, which welcomes new generations of team members into the Duncan Aviation culture. She previously worked at Lincoln Southeast High School as an administrative assistant where she was a Check-in/Check-out mentor and helped facilitate student-led clubs developing her passion for mentoring and fostering growth. She still surrounds herself with the Southeast Knight family by volunteering as an Assistant Coach for the Junior Varsity and Reserve softball teams. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her son, Carter. She also enjoys reading and cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs.

ara Alzamili is currently pursuing higher education in Nebraska following her graduation from high school. She earned her high school diploma with a remarkable 4.0 GPA, receiving honors in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements. Simultaneously, Lara maintained full-time employment, demonstrating her unwavering commitment and work ethic. Residing with her father and canine companion, Lara embraces her responsibilities with pride and dedication. She is characterized by her strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence, setting ambitious goals for herself. One of her aspirations is to ascend to a prominent position in the legal profession, aspiring to become a high-ranking lawyer. Lara is a self-reliant and intellectually driven individual who possesses a diverse range of interests and passions. Peyton Miller, Undergraduate of Secondary Education, Social Sciences

Peyton Miller is currently studying to become a social studies teacher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Inspired by all the teachers that came before her, Peyton strives to become a master in her field so she can show her students the importance of learning, growing, and education. When she’s not in the classroom, Peyton is an avid artist, with her current project being a mural for Lincoln Northeast High School. Peyton’s motto: even the smallest acts of kindness matter. Her motto is a message she carries in her classroom, her studio, and in every aspect of her future.

Faith Green, Student - Palmyra Jr-Sr High School

Faith is a senior at Palmyra Jr-Sr High School who has embraced an active role in her school’s FCCLA club. Her involvement with FCCLA opened her eyes to the importance of community service, igniting a passion for giving back to others. Through volunteering in nursing homes, aiding the homeless, and contributing to the betterment of her local community, she has discovered her life’s purpose: to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. Driven by this mission, Faith aspires to pursue a career in the medical field, where she can continue her journey of helping others and making a difference.

Shannon Mangram, University of Nebraska College of Law

Shannon Mangram is a J.D. Candidate at the University of Nebraska College of Law, also pursuing a Master’s of Science in Leadership Education. As President of the Community Legal Education Project, she actively engages in various student organizations. Shannon was honored with the 2023 Meeting of the Minds’“Most Likely to Brighten Up a Room” Award. Currently clerking at Fielder Law Firm, she aids in employment discrimination lawsuits. She operates her own LLC, “Shannon Mangram Coaching LLC,” specializing in Intercultural Competence Coaching for local companies. Shannon aspires to be a professional advocate and enter public service. In her spare time, she cherishes moments with her husband and two sons, and is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

Araya Schroder, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Araya attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she plans to double major in Psychology and Journalism. While in high school her spark of interest in journalism began once she joined the school newspaper, The Clarion. She found that platform as an opportunity to speak about more prominent topics. One of her significant stories was discussing the foster care system, which included an interview with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) explaining more about what the system looks like and how their mission benefits the children. Araya cares deeply about children and their well-being, which is her primary motivation for becoming a Child Psychologist. She’s passionate about creating a safe and nurturing environment, while also contributing to the complicated topics of society.
