Top scams of 2016 Reports to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016 confirmed that tax scams still top the list of most frequently reported scams, despite a huge drop in reports following a September police raid in Mumbai, India.

The list was compiled based on more than 30,000 reports filed by consumers on bbb.org/scamtracker, which was launched last year by the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust.

Not all of those consumers lost money. Many recognized the scam before being victimized, but reported it to warn others.

The top three scams on the 2016 list — those related to taxes, debt collection and sweepstakes/prizes/gifts — were the same as in 2015.

New to the top 10 are online purchase scams (No. 4) and phishing scams (No. 10).

Though online purchase scams also were common in 2015, that scam type was not added as a Scam Tracker category until 2016.

Employment scams (No. 5) also are new to the top 10, but only because work-from-home scams, previously a separate category, were included. Another change was the drop of tech support scams from No. 4 last year to No. 7 this year.

Old trick, new twist Though the “Can you hear me?” scam has long been used to coerce businesses into purchasing office supplies and directory ads they never ordered, in a new twist the scam is targeting consumers.

Since January, more than half the reports to BBB’s Scam Tracker have been about the “Can You Hear Me?” scam, in which the victim receives a phone call from someone who almost immediately asks “Can you hear me?”

The caller’s goal is to get the victim to answer “Yes,” which most people do in that situation. Some fumbling around might be heard, and the caller might even say something like “I’m having trouble with my headset.”

However, the “person” on the other end of the line may be a robocall that’s recording the conversation.

The victim’s affirmative response could later be edited to make it sound as though a major purchase was being authorized.

Consumers say “Can you hear me?” calls are about vacation packages, cruises, warranties and other big-ticket items. So far, no one has reported money loss, but it’s unclear if the targets will be victimized at a later date.

BBB offers consumers this advice: Use caller ID to screen calls, and consider not answering unfamiliar numbers. If a call is important, the caller will leave a message.

If someone calls and asks “Can you hear me?” do not answer “Yes.” Hang up. Scammers change their tactics as the public catches on, so be alert to other questions designed to elicit a simple “Yes.” Note the caller’s number and report it to www.bbb. org/scamtracker to help warn others. BBB also shares Scam Tracker information with government and law-enforcement agencies, so every piece of information helps track down scammers.

Consider joining the Do Not Call Registry at www. donotcall.gov to cut down on telemarketing and sales calls. Doing so might not help with scammers, as they don’t pay attention to the law. However, those on the registry receive fewer calls overall, which can help consumers spot fraudulent calls more quickly.

Examine bank and credit card statements regularly for unauthorized charges. It’s also a good idea to look at telephone and cellphone bills, as scammers might use the “Yes” recording to authorize charges to phone bills. That practice, known as “cramming,” is illegal.

Beware of ‘IRS’ scams Aggressive, sophisticated phone and email scams that impersonate the IRS continue, ripping off thousands of consumers.

A twist to the scams uses a new tactic that relates to tax season.

The thieves call, represent themselves as being with the IRS and ask the victim to verify a few details so their tax return can be processed. The scammers are trying to obtain information such as Social Security numbers or financial information like bank account and credit card numbers.

Such scammers also send email messages that typically include links to what look like government websites that ask for Social Security numbers and other personal information.

Identity thieves behind the sites can use the information to file false tax returns and collect refunds. Such sites may contain malware that infects computers and gives cyberthieves access to files or allows them to obtain personal information.
