A THRIVING MEMBERSHIPMEANS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS I have to say that we have been fortunate to continue to thrive as an industry, even through the trials and tribulations of COVID.

I give a lot of credit to the work that Olympia Master Builders and BIAW (The Building Industry of Washington) did to get us back to work as quickly as possible as well as the work both Associations continue to do on our behalf.

They advocate for us by trying to keep impact fees down and permitting processes more efficient. And, by all means necessary, they fight for affordable housing. For that we are fortunate.

All the work the association's volunteer members and staff do every day, contributes to the success of the building industry in our five great counties.

The councils and committees are made up of OMB member volunteers like you and me. Together, we help ensure our voices are heard. The work done with the help

of OMB staff, provides us with highly successful community events and an tremendous online presence. That gets member companies in front of the public, year after year, even in the face of a worldwide pandemic and stay-inplace order.

It is important to remind each and every one of you, that without you and your membership, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. The more members, the stronger the voice. With a more robust presence, we can make our industry thrive like never before.

Imagine all we could achieve if each one of us brought in just one new member to our association. I encourage you to think about this the next time you are combing through your contact list.

When you see anyone you feel would benefit from the value of a membership with OMB, become a part of the recruiting team and refer them to staff.

appy New Year! I know we’re all ready to put 2020 behind us and start fresh in 2021.

The year 2020 started off strong and quickly became an “evaluate and pivot” year for each and every one of us as we dealt with the impacts of the pandemic.

Every aspect of our lives changed–personally and professionally. I am proud Olympia Master Builders (OMB), The Building Industry of Washington (BIAW) and all the local homebuilding associations from around the state worked to get construction back working five weeks earlier than most industries proving, once again, that we’re stronger together!

This combined effort saved businesses and jobs for people all over Washington State. As I think back on the important work we did in 2020 on behalf of the building industry, it once again reminds me that membership pays. If you find yourself questioning rejoin-

ing, or you’re working to convince someone else to join, remember that coming together with your peers on behalf of the industry works! Together we are stronger!

I hear sometimes that membership is just for new businesses but I think we’ve proven that membership has something to offer both new and established businesses. OMB offers industry specific training, industry representation, member promotion through events, online presence and more. Membership says you care about the reputation of your business and are committed to learning and growing. Connecting and establishing relationships with other business owners who are experiencing, or have experienced, the same highs and lows as you gives you the ability to learn and grow together. Jenn Wasson, Membership & Sales Director

In 2008, OMB snagged Angela from her work in community transportation. Since then she has held several positions at OMB including Membership and Government Affairs. Most recently she was promoted to Executive Officer.

Jenn is native to Olympia since moving here in 1976. She attended WWU, followed by St. Martin’s University graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. She began her career as a teacher and spent 19 years at Evergreen Forest Elementary in grades 2, 3 and 6.

When she’s not overseeing all things OMB, Angela loves spending time with family, being outdoors, and taking fun local excursions. A Washington State native, Angela grew up on a wheat farm in eastern, WA and can, when needed, operate heavy duty farm equipment.

Brianna Bedell, Events Director As a farmer’s daughter from Odessa, WA – a small town best known for it’s German Festival “Deutschesfest” – Brianna’s first work experience started alongside her twin sister and her dad, on the wheat fields. After college, she started her career in the hospitality industry at Red Lion Hotels, which quickly transpired into the event world, which she has worked in for over 20 years. Brianna’s favorite things are going to the beach and spending time with her husband and 4 year old daughter.

Jill Williams, Communications Director Originally from Washington State, Jill spent almost a decade on the East Coast before returning “home” to Olympia two summers ago. As a graduate of Eastern Washington University, Jill comes to OMB with over 25 years of marketing, design and communications experience. Her passion for design, social media, and chatting up strangers in line at the local coffee shop, make her the perfect fit as OMB’s Communications Director. Jason Gano, Government Affairs DIrector In 2019 Jason graduated from Central Washington University with a degree in Political Science. After college, Jason took a Job in Olympia for the 2020 Legislative Session working for the Washington State Senate Republican Caucus. After that, Jason went to Arizona where he worked on over a dozen Democrat campaigns building bipartisan connections. After a successful sweep in Arizona, Jason returned home to Washington state and joined the OMB team. When Jason is not in the office you can find him running, hiking, wakeboarding, skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, or enjoying the San Juan Islands.

Emily Jaeger, Office Administrator Emily was born and raised right here in Olympia! She graduated from Tumwater High School in 2018 where she also attended South Puget Sound Community College in their Running Start program. In her free time, Emily enjoys the adventures of the great outdoors or the quieter adventures she finds in literature.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS OMB membership supports, not only action at the local level, but at the state and nation levels as well. National level advocacy works to defeat excessive regulations and defend affordable housing initiatives on Capitol Hill.

LEGAL PROGRAM BIAW’s Legal Program is the most proactive and successful of any trade association in the state. BIAW’s in-house and contract attorneys, along with Legal Committee members, directly represent members in crucial precedent-setting cases of statewide significance.

EVENT COMMITTEES

PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDING

Event Committees meet as needed to provide OMB event oversight.

$85 yearly fee. Meetings are held monthly.

MISSION: Provides oversight of each event.

Event Committees may include OMB Big Home & Garden Show, Auction, Golf Tournament, Homebuilder's Expo, Tour of Homes and Chefs on Tour, and Christmas Party.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

MISSION: The Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) is the voice of women in the building industry— dedicated to promoting industry professionalism and supporting members in Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Grays Harbor and Pacific counties. PWB are active in promoting industry networking, educational series targeted to women, and community charity events.

Meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4:00pm.

THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING COUNCIL (TAHC)

MISSION: Plan and promote activities and policies for growth of the Association’s membership. Develop goals for enrollment, member renewal and membership value, develop and implement programs to achieve those objectives.

$125 or $85 if you’ve already paid your $40 voluntary contribution. Meetings are called as needed.

SPIKE CLUB Meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4:00pm.

MISSION: In an effort to retain our current members the committee will be focusing on educating members on why they should continue their membership with OMB.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE Meetings are called as needed.

MISSION: Implements a scholarship program for graduating high school students and other qualified students throughout the Association’s territory.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE Meetings are called as needed.

MISSION: TAHC is the political action committee for the Olympia Master Builders. It provides endorsements and financial support to political candidates who understand and support the mission of OMB - to provide affordable housing for all economic segments of society.

QUARTERLY BUILDING OFFICIALS Meetings are held each quarter.

Provides an opportunity for members to meet with County and Local Building Officials to discuss building planning (ongoing and upcoming), possible fee increases and code changes. A great avenue for members to bring up their concerns and issues face to face with their county and local officials.

MISSION: Determine the educational needs of members and develops and/or offers programs to meet those needs.

Government Affairs 2021 is a year unlike any other and this year’s Legislative Session is no different 2021 is a year unlike any other and this year’s Legislative Session is no different. The Legislature in Olympia began meeting in the second week of January and right out of the gate there were bills introduced that would negatively impact the building industry.

The building industry suffered through uncertainty in 2020 and now we have a chance to make our opinions known at the state level for 2021. We want to continue to keep our industry open and protect it for the future. Below you will find a list of bills that The Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) is keeping a close eye on. They are asking for your support by making your opinions known to the Legislature.

You can do that by writing to your local lawmakers or by signing up for remote testimony in order to directly speak to your lawmakers. You can sign up to testify on the Washington State Legislatures website at www.app.leg.wa.gov/ csiremote/

Industry Friendly Bills:

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE RELIEF (SB 5171) Appropriates up to $1,000,000 from the state budget for unemployment insurance relief.

OPEN UP WASHINGTON INTO PHASE 2 (SB 5114) Allows all of Washington State to open up to Phase 2, while also giving the legislature the power to review the phases.

Bills that would negatively impact the building industry:

ADDING “CLIMATE CHANGE” INTO THE GROWTH MANAGEMENT ACT (HB 1099) Changing the state's climate response through updates to the state's comprehensive planning framework.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE TASK FORCE (SB 5141) Establishes environmental justice strategic plan incorporation, equitable community engagement and public participation, tribal consultation, assessment, and budget and funding obligation requirements for the departments of Health, Ecology, Agriculture, Natural Resources, Commerce, and Transportation, and the Puget Sound Partnership.

UNEMPLOYMENT FOR VOLUNTARILY QUITTING (SB 5064) Makes benefits paid for alteration of the work shift, making care for a child or vulnerable adult in the claimant's care inaccessible, only chargeable to the separating employer's experience rating account.

WHISTLEBLOWER/ QUI TAM (HB 1076) Authorizes a qui tam action for enforcement of various employment laws under which a relator on behalf of an agency may pursue relief the agency may pursue.

“Qui tam lawsuits work by rewarding a whistleblower who sues a person or organization that is defrauding the US government. Since the government is unaware of most of the fraud taking place against it, it relies on whistleblowers to bring the fraud to the government’s attention.” (Bothwell Law Group) DIRECT CONTRACTOR LIABILITY (SB 5278) Concerning the protection of construction worker wages and benefits.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX (SB 5096) Imposes a 9.0 percent capital gains tax beginning January 1, 2022.

GOV. INSLEE’S CLIMATE CHANGE – STATEWIDE REDUCTION OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS (HB 1084): • 70% Energy reduction for residential by 2027 Codes • Begins aggressive prohibition of natural gas in new construction With the 2021 Session being fully virtual, it has never been easier to participate in public hearings.
